Money Can't Buy You Love: Valuing Contributions By Nonresidential Fathers, Laurie S. Kohn Jan 2015

Money Can't Buy You Love: Valuing Contributions By Nonresidential Fathers, Laurie S. Kohn

Brooklyn Law Review

Family law in the United States reflects and reinforces expectations about how fathers should interact with their children. Those expectations betray the legal system’s valuation of paternal roles in which financial contributions far outweigh other types of caretaking. This differential valuation, though advantageous to the overall wellbeing of some children, negatively affects low-income families, exacerbates cultural and societal pressures that drive men from being engaged parents, and compels mothers who seek paternal engagement to parent alone. As the populations of absent fathers and of fathers who are unable to meet their child support obligations increase, it is worth reevaluating the …

Let's Clear The Air: Regulating Electronic Cigarette Use In New York City, Sarah L. Hernandez Jan 2015

Let's Clear The Air: Regulating Electronic Cigarette Use In New York City, Sarah L. Hernandez

Brooklyn Law Review

On April 29, 2014, New York City passed Local Law 152, which amended the city’s existing antismoking legislation to require users of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to abide by the same restrictions as traditional cigarette smokers. This note focuses on New York City’s legislation as a useful study on the effective regulation of e-cigarettes within a context of the devices’ uncertain health implications and the complex social dynamics regarding their use. It proposes that if the courts ultimately find Local Law 152 invalid, the New York City Council should fold e-cigarette products and usage within the current legislative definitions of “tobacco …

As America viewed the first massive deployment of its all-volunteer force at the beginning of the first Persian Gulf War, one journalist commented:

When this war is over, Americans need to do some serious thinking about the all-volunteer armed forces, the one legacy of the Vietnam War with which the nation seemed comfortable. Among other things, we have to decide whether a single parent, and, in many cases, both parents, should be deployed in war zones.
Is the nation's reliance on an army of volunteers worth the emotional grief that comes from ripping military parents away from their children? Do …

The Mutual Dependency Of Force And Law In American Foreign Policy, Richard A. Epstein, Mario Loyola Jan 2015

The Mutual Dependency Of Force And Law In American Foreign Policy, Richard A. Epstein, Mario Loyola

University of Chicago Law Review

A successful American grand strategy requires a close integration of interna-tional and domestic institutions and practices. This Essay explores the vital inter-dependence of grand strategy and law, both international and domestic. First, it asks how the United States should formulate its foreign policy strategy by pointing to the three primary components that must be deployed in tandem to forge a suc-cessful American foreign policy—persuasion, inducements, and force. Second, this Essay shows that in light of the distribution of powers between the president and Congress, and within the executive branch, the execution of that strategy requires a high level of bipartisan …

Beyond Cheneyism And Snowdenism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2015

Beyond Cheneyism And Snowdenism, Cass R. Sunstein

University of Chicago Law Review

In the domain of national security, many people favor some kind of precautionary principle, insisting that it is far better to be safe than sorry and contending that a range of important safeguards, including widespread surveillance, is amply justified to prevent the loss of life. Those who object to the resulting initiatives, and in particular to widespread surveillance, respond with a precautionary principle of their own, seeking safeguards against what they see as unacceptable risks to privacy and liberty. The problem is that, as in the environmental context, a precautionary principle threatens to create an unduly narrow viewscreen, focusing people …

Legal Tools For Climate Adaptation Advocacy: Nepa, Jennier Klein, Ethan Strell Jan 2015

Legal Tools For Climate Adaptation Advocacy: Nepa, Jennier Klein, Ethan Strell

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970. NEPA requires federal agencies to evaluate the environmental effects of a wide range of actions, including direct federal undertakings and projects that receive federal funding or permits. Many states have since enacted similar laws of varying scope, requiring evaluation of the environmental impacts of certain state and local actions. For instance, New York State enacted the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) in 1975. Some municipalities, including New York City, have their own environmental review procedures.

The purpose of NEPA and similar state laws …

Obergefell'S Conservatism: Reifying Familial Fronts, Clare Huntington Jan 2015

Obergefell'S Conservatism: Reifying Familial Fronts, Clare Huntington

Fordham Law Review

I am delighted with the result in Obergefell v. Hodges, but I am unhappy with the Court’s reasoning. In lieu of a straightforward, and far more defensible, decision based purely on the Equal Protection Clause, Justice Kennedy’s reliance on the Due Process Clause is deeply problematic.

The Prodigal Illegal: Christian Love And Immigration Reform, Victor C. Romero Jan 2015

The Prodigal Illegal: Christian Love And Immigration Reform, Victor C. Romero

Faculty Scholarship

Despite the impasse around immigration reform, most everyone believes the United States’ immigration system is broken. And most agree that the key issue is what to do with the eleven million or so undocumented persons currently residing in the United States. As a Christian immigration law teacher, I have been interested in the debate among the churches as to what such reform should look like. In this Article, I use Professor Jeffrie Murphy’s conception of agapic love as a lens through which to examine reform proposals. I then evaluate the two positions Christian churches have seemed to embrace—permanent legal status …

Altrusim, Fact Or Fiction?: An Exploration Of Altruism And Egoism In The Context Of Religion And Service Learning, Sarah Pawlicki

A with Honors Projects

This research paper questions the existence of true altruism, by discussing social psychological, philosophical, and theological theories regarding altruism and egoism. The author then discusses her findings in the context of two service learning projects which involved volunteering at the Champaign County Humane Society and Salt and Light, A Christian ministry that provides job counseling, computer access, a thrift and food store. She concludes that, rather than questioning the existence of true altruism exists, the focus should be on doing good for others, regardless of motives.

Science Teaching Reform Through Professional Development: Teachers’ Use Of A Scientific Classroom Discourse Community Model, Elizabeth Lewis, Dale R. Baker, Brandon Helding

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This report outlines a two-year investigation into how secondary science teachers used professional development (PD) to build scientific classroom discourse communities (SCDCs). Observation data, teacher, student and school demographic information were used to build a hierarchical linear model. The length of time that teachers received PD was the exclusive predictor of change over time, while a schools’ percentage of low socioeconomic students predicted of how much PD was initially implemented. Prior to PD teachers expressed a desire to increase opportunities for students to engage in SCDCs, but found some aspects more challenging than others to implement. Generally, there were three …

Expression Of Interferon Gamma By A Recombinant Rabies Virus Strongly Attenuates The Pathogenicity Of The Virus Via Induction Of Type I Interferon., Darryll A Barkhouse, Samantha A Garcia, Emily K Bongiorno, Aurore Lebrun, Milosz Faber, D Craig Hooper, Phd

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

UNLABELLED: Previous animal model experiments have shown a correlation between interferon gamma (IFN-γ) expression and both survival from infection with attenuated rabies virus (RABV) and reduction of neurological sequelae. Therefore, we hypothesized that rapid production of murine IFN-γ by the rabies virus itself would induce a more robust antiviral response than would occur naturally in mice. To test this hypothesis, we used reverse engineering to clone the mouse IFN-γ gene into a pathogenic rabies virus backbone, SPBN, to produce the recombinant rabies virus designated SPBNγ. Morbidity and mortality were monitored in mice infected intranasally with SPBNγ or SPBN(-) control virus …

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) is a cell membrane transporter of lactate. MCT4 is a tumor-specific marker of oxidative stress, glycolysis and hypoxia in tumor stromal cells. We investigated HPV positive and negative tumors with regional metastases to cervical lymph nodes (LN) to study how the metastatic tumor cells interact with their microenvironment. By selecting cancers with extracapsular extension (ECE), we intended to evaluate the interaction between metastases and the surrounding extranodal tissue.

Methods:

Clinical data were collected from 24 advanced stage oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients with neck LN metastasis. All patients presented with at least N1 …

ABSTRACT

Background:

Our department operates a weekday-only (8AM-5PM) satellite laboratory in an infusion center with a menu of 18 chemistry tests on a Roche c501 analyzer. We examined whether daily patient results averages (PRA) in this setting might be useful as a patient-based quality control (PBQC) adjunct to standard daily liquid quality control (LQC) measurements. First, we evaluated the reproducibility (coefficient of variation, CV) of daily PRAs for each analyte, and compared these to CVs of LQC. Second, for select analytes found to have relatively low PRA CVs, we evaluated the extent to which use of daily PRA measurements could …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

Introduction:

Microcytic erythrocytosis is an abnormal CBC (complete blood count) finding that is under-recognized, poorly understood, and consequently under-utilized in patient care. It is characterized by decreased MCV and increased RBC count. Its etiology is likely multifactorial and includes thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies. The focus of our study was to determine the relative prevalence of hemoglobin-associated disorders in patients revealing microcytic erythrocytosis on CBC and to demonstrate whether or not hemoglobin variant analysis should be included in the diagnostic work-up of such cases.

Analysis Of Patient Results Distributions To Reevaluate A Reference Range Change For Calcium, After A Change In Assay Reagents On The Roche Cobas C500 Analyzer, Upasana Joneja, Md, Laura J. Mccloskey, Md, Douglas F. Stickle, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

Introduction:

A change in reagents for calcium (Ca) on the Roche Cobas c500 used in our laboratory analyzer took place in 2013. The previous reference range (8.5-10.5 mg/dL) was replaced with that from the manufacturer's study (8.6-10.0 mg/dL), based on correlation of results between the new and old assays. As a matter of quality assurance, we undertook a post-assay-change reevaluation of the reference range change, using a method based on that of Bhattacharya [1]. In short, the method relies on the assumption that the reference range is a normal distribution, which assumption enables this distribution to be isolated mathematically from …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

Background:

Prompt diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) disease is critical to guide intervention and appropriate therapy. Development of novel laboratory approaches to rapidly classify acute-onset CNS disease is in great demand. Serious microbial pathogens, especially viruses, are quickly expanding beyond their historic geographic range and may not even be considered in the clinician’s differential diagnosis. Unlike bacterial cultures, current viral testing targets a limited number of viruses. Additionally, despite diversity in etiology, signs and symptoms of both infectious and non-infectious CNS disorders can be remarkably similar, which can confuse the clinical picture and delay treatment. Bacterial, viral, fungal and …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

The picornaviruses human parechovirus (HPeV) and enterovirus (EV) cause a wide range of diseases, including CNS infections, which can be severe and potentially fatal. EV causes most cases of pediatric meningoencephalitis worldwide, and HPeV type 3 (HPeV3) is the most common cause of viral meningitis in young infants. Each year in the United States, there are over 75,000 cases of aseptic meningitis. Despite reassuring short-term outcomes, negative neurodevelopmental sequalae are increasingly associated with HPeV and EV.

The pathogenesis and severity of HPeV and EV infections are undoubtedly linked to the innate and adaptive immune responses elicited by these viruses. Until …

A Distinct Pattern Of Beclin-1 Staining Helps Distinguish Sessile Serrated Adenomas, Danielle Fortuna, Md, Juan P. Palazzo, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

Autophagy, a lysosomal degradation system, has both cell survival and cell death-promoting capabilities, and its versatility is exploited in many pathologic entities. In neoplastic processes, autophagy has been demonstrated to contribute to both tumor suppression and tumorigenesis in a relatively tumor-specific fashion. Beclin-1 is a protein involved in the formation of the autophagosome, the core unit of autophagy, and serves as one of the general markers for this process. Previous studies have shown Beclin-1 overexpression in both pre-neoplastic and invasive colon carcinoma but weak to absent expression in normal colonic mucosa.

Serrated polyps (SPs) of the colon represent morphologically and …
