There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen
There Goes The Neighborhood: Racial Politics From The Good Neighbor To The New Jim Crow, Patrick Bon Tonissen
Theses & ETDs
After the rhetoric of Franklin D. Roosevelt rebranded U.S. foreign relations through the anti-imperial Good Neighbor policy, challenged the racial hierarchies of "Nazi tyranny," and established post-war aims of self-determination and human rights for "all the men in all the lands," the denial of African American human rights undermined the moral legitimacy of the United States to be a model for modernity in the post-colonial world. In order to "outsell Communism" in a decolonizing world, the Truman administration embraced racial liberalism and a "Second Reconstruction" to ameliorate the image of U.S. race relations. In response to Truman‘s racial liberalism, southern …
Mosquito Control To Kayak Trails: The Effects Of Mangrove Ditches On The Sarasota Bay Region, Aedan Stockdale
Mosquito Control To Kayak Trails: The Effects Of Mangrove Ditches On The Sarasota Bay Region, Aedan Stockdale
Theses & ETDs
Florida has lost nearly half its initial 20 million acres of tidal wetland since 1850. Much of these tidal wetlands are occupied by mangroves, a taxonomically unrelated group of trees and shrubs. Mangroves embody both a grouping of plants and an ecological community that protects the shore, harbors economically important fisheries, and provides recreational opportunities. Since the 1940s these mangrove habitats have been subject to extensive ditching and draining, severely compromising their ecological functions. The mangroves of the Sarasota Bay region are moderately fragmented and ditched habitats account for 68.4% of the total mangrove coverage. Restoration projects like that of …
“Bring Home The Salmon”: Examining The Klamath Dams And The Largest Dam Removal In World History, Darcey Evans
“Bring Home The Salmon”: Examining The Klamath Dams And The Largest Dam Removal In World History, Darcey Evans
Theses & ETDs
The Klamath River, stretching between California and Oregon, has been used as an artery of life support by Native American peoples in the region for thousands of years. The river provides the tribal peoples with a connection to their creators, ancestors, and environment, and continuing into the 21st century, the subsistence, ceremonies, identities, and worldviews of the tribal peoples are deeply connected to the Klamath River and its surrounding landscape. During the 20th century, six dams were constructed on the Klamath River, causing unprecedented levels of ecological and cultural disruption. The four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River are potentially …
The Manasota Key Cemetery (8so1292): Insights Into Everyday Life In The Manasota Period (500 Bce- 800 Ce) On Florida’S Gulf Coast, Aric Archebelle-Smith
The Manasota Key Cemetery (8so1292): Insights Into Everyday Life In The Manasota Period (500 Bce- 800 Ce) On Florida’S Gulf Coast, Aric Archebelle-Smith
Theses & ETDs
The Manasota Culture prospered from around 500 BCE to 800 CE along the coastline that stretches from around the Tampa Bay all the way south to the northern end of Charlotte Harbor. Like many other cultures from coastal Florida, the Manasota people subsisted primarily on marine resources with some reliance on terrestrial resources. The Manasota Key Cemetery is a burial site located in the middle of Manasota Key in Englewood, Florida. Wilbur “Sonny” Cockrell excavated the site in 1989 with a team of local archaeologists and volunteers. It is one of the largest Manasota period burial sites in the region. …
Frogfish Vagility Between Natural And Artificial Structure, Sean G. Patton
Frogfish Vagility Between Natural And Artificial Structure, Sean G. Patton
Theses & ETDs
Frogfish of the family Antennariidae are small reef predators that rely on highly evolved, and adaptable camouflage to forage. This study focused on the following species; Antennarius pictus, Antennatus coccineus, and Antennarius biocellatus. These organisms are often seen to associate with sponges, tunicates and macro-algae which are at great risk due to environmental pollution. Vagility is defined here as the ability for frogfish to explore and interact with their environment. This study examined frogfish vagility and structure selection, comparing natural sponge structure and artificial plastic structures. It was found that frogfish generally selected sponge structures over plastic structures. There was …
No Future In “Progress” The Embodiment Of Illegality Among Migrants In Rabat, Morocco, Zachary Natale
No Future In “Progress” The Embodiment Of Illegality Among Migrants In Rabat, Morocco, Zachary Natale
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores experiences of "illegality in a community of irregular sub- Saharan migrants in Takadoum, a quarter of Rabat, Morocco. Since the early 2000s, increased migration flow from sub-Saharan Africa to the European Union and Europe's exertion of extraterritorial power over its southern Mediterranean neighbors have turned Morocco into a place of immigration rather than a point of transit. Morocco's increasingly punitive measures against irregular migration have "criminalized" migrants, turning them into social pariahs in popular discourse. Through ethnography, I explore the embodied expressions of abjection through the theoretical lens of biopower, or sovereign power over life. First, I …
Innervating Gaia A Noöspheric Model Of Chaotic Cognitive Evolution, Clint Dawson
Innervating Gaia A Noöspheric Model Of Chaotic Cognitive Evolution, Clint Dawson
Theses & ETDs
Although several models of cognitive evolution have been proposed, the evolution of cognition is generally regarded to be a passive process driven by environmental forces, and the impact of cognition on its evolutionary trajectory is often not considered. In this work, a noöspheric model of cognitive evolution based on Kauffman’s NK network is proposed that views cognitive evolution as the process underlying the development of the noösphere. As the noösphere is a conceptual entity comprising the total information of a system, cognitive evolution will be considered as an information-gaining and connectivity-increasing process. The evolution of the nervous system is first …
Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel
Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the origins of specific stereotypes and preconceived notions of India and people of Indian descent in the United States and how they are manifested today in American sitcoms. I analyze how some Indian and Indian American characters’ identities are more strongly informed by race, ethnicity, and nationality, which can play a role in perpetuating stereotypes. By looking at story arcs, character development, jokes, and dialogues, I show how varied or homogenous the characters are in the depictions of their identities and to what extent these identities are integral to the series’ comedy.
Crumble Into Cancer: Fragility And Disease In Human Genome Architecture, Jonathan Niles
Crumble Into Cancer: Fragility And Disease In Human Genome Architecture, Jonathan Niles
Theses & ETDs
Cancer is an enigmatic disease of dysregulation, estimated to cause over half a million deaths in the United States in 2015 (Siegel et al., 2015). A patient’s prognosis is heavily dependent on the time of detection, fueling research into the origins, biomarkers, and early detection methods for all types of cancers (Hirsch et al., 2001). We hypothesized that the frequency of cancerous lesions in lung cancer cells may be a function of morphological features in genome architecture. Using chromatin conformation maps of human embryonic stem cells and lung cancer cells, we reproduce previously discovered topological domains, and show that cancerous …
Boys Don’T Cry: Relationship Between Gender Stereotype Classification, Emotion Regulation, And Internalizing Problems, Arianne M. Kopacz
Boys Don’T Cry: Relationship Between Gender Stereotype Classification, Emotion Regulation, And Internalizing Problems, Arianne M. Kopacz
Theses & ETDs
Emotion regulation has been found to be predictive of a variety of psychological outcomes, including internalizing problems. Pre-adolescents, a group particularly susceptible to these problems, have been relatively understudied in terms of how emotion regulation affects these outcomes. Additionally, the issue of gender has been found to influence internalizing problems such that girls report more depression than boys. The current study used a measure of emotion regulation as well as the Children’s Sex Role Inventory to examine the relationship between one’s sex-role type, emotion regulation style, and reports of subclinical depression and anxiety. Participants classified as androgynous endorsed higher levels …
Exploring The Relationships Among Self-Compassion, Mindfulness, And Physical Activity, Megan J. Farley
Exploring The Relationships Among Self-Compassion, Mindfulness, And Physical Activity, Megan J. Farley
Theses & ETDs
In recent years, self-compassion and mindfulness have become topics of great interest in Western psychology. Due to modern society’s decreasing happiness, it is imperative to research ways the population can increase their well-being in order to lead more meaningful, happier lives. Mindfulness (the acceptance and non-evaluative awareness of the present), self-compassion (directing compassion inward), and physical activity may be the key. It was hypothesized that there are positive correlations between (1) self-compassion and mindfulness, (2) physical activity and mindfulness, and (3) physical activity and self-compassion. In this study, participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form (IPAQ-SF), the …
Male Gender Role Conflict And Relationship Satisfaction: A Dyadic Analysis, Alexander Dugas
Male Gender Role Conflict And Relationship Satisfaction: A Dyadic Analysis, Alexander Dugas
Theses & ETDs
Many researchers have discussed the negative effects that male gender roles have on men and those around them. These negative effects are known as male gender role conflict. Although previous studies have asked individual men and women questions about male gender role conflict and relationship satisfaction, this study is the first to use a dyadic approach – simultaneously asking both partners in a heterosexual romantic relationship, in order to obtain both actual and perceived male gender role conflict. This is then compared with both partners’ relationship satisfaction. The current study assesses the usefulness of this dyadic approach by surveying 30 …
This Is ‘Gator Country: The Role Of The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis) In The Livelihood Of Floridians Past, Present And Future, Sarah Denison
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I explore the role of the American alligator in the livelihood of Floridians past, present, and future through an examination of historical documents and ethnographic work conducted in Florida’s alligator industry. The American alligator has intrigued Floridians for thousands of years and they have found an astounding number of ways to integrate the alligator into their lives. It has become symbol, totem, mascot, pet, research subject, handbag, main dish, nightmare, and souvenir. Our resident crocodilian has been hunted, photographed, chronicled, managed, farmed, sold, tanned, and eaten. As a result of their dynamic, changing relationship with the alligator …
Rewriting Women’S Stories: Modern Adaptations Of Fairy Tales And Their Feminist Implications, Cassandra Corrado
Rewriting Women’S Stories: Modern Adaptations Of Fairy Tales And Their Feminist Implications, Cassandra Corrado
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines contemporary adaptations of the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. I argue that following Disney’s popular adaptations of these two tales, feminists responded with adaptations that reflected modern concerns. These adaptations also reflected the ways in which fairy tale heroines are often silenced and pushed into the margins by their authors. The adaptations that I examine include Gail Carson Levine’s Fairest, Barbara Walker’s “Snow Night,” Angela Carter’s “The Snow Child,” Carolyn Turgeon’s Mermaid, and Laura Antoniou’s “The Little Urban Maid.” This thesis is informed by Second- and Third-Wave feminism, and is particularly …
Restoring And Re-Storying The Haitian Landscape, Nicolas Scheffer
Restoring And Re-Storying The Haitian Landscape, Nicolas Scheffer
Theses & ETDs
There is a common thread in Western depictions of Haiti that emphasizes a constant state of revolution and crisis, an inherent instability or inability to reconcile the goals and promises of emancipation with the realities of Haiti’s position in the world economy. Rhetoric of failure and crisis permeates Western political discourse and journalism and even into the ranks of Haitian society. Media coverage after the earthquake in January 2010 reinforced these tropes and prompted renewed attention to Haiti’s environmental problems, perpetuating a cycle of de-contextualized narratives that blame the rural peasant for the state of Haiti’s environment. Natural events such …
“Always A Blank Page For Each New Hand That Approaches”: The Graphic Novel As Bildungsroman, Emerson Schroer
“Always A Blank Page For Each New Hand That Approaches”: The Graphic Novel As Bildungsroman, Emerson Schroer
Theses & ETDs
The graphic novel, as a form, lends itself well to representing narratives that charter the formative years of the protagonist. The process of identity formation is a central theme in three graphic novels that function on a Bildungsroman model: Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel, Le bleu est une couleur chaude by Julie Maroh, and Darkroom: A Memoir in Black & White by Lila Quintero Weaver. In Fun Home, the narrative focus is on gender and sexual identity; in Le bleu the focus is on sexual identity; and Darkroom focuses on racial identity. While the protagonists eventually claim …
Use Of Analytical Methods To Assess The Potential Presence Of Brassinosteroids In Catharanthus Roseus L. Carpel Exudates, Dain Regis
Theses & ETDs
Despite being found in low concentration in plant tissue, brassinosteroids play a significant role in plant growth and development. Past thesis students have shown that treating Catharanthus roseus L. carpels with brassinosteroids has significant effects on their growth and development. Further research has also indicated brassinosteroids as a component of the factor initiating C. roseus carpel fusion. Although brassinosteroids have not been directly detected in C. roseus carpels, this thesis is a preliminary investigation to develop methodology to assess the potential presence of brassinosteroids in carpel exudates using analytical methods. Prior to this study, compounds in the secretions known to …
Student Awareness Of New College Of Florida: Associations With Motivation, Success, And Progression, Jason Michael Ryan Thornton
Student Awareness Of New College Of Florida: Associations With Motivation, Success, And Progression, Jason Michael Ryan Thornton
Theses & ETDs
New College of Florida is a small, residential, honors, public liberal arts college in Sarasota, Florida, that uses a unique environment and system of learning contracts to progress students toward a Bachelor’s Degree. Troubling retention statistics from 2008 forward have prompted self-study to help determine causes and possible solutions. Any college loses students during their first year of attendance, but NCF has continued to lose students at every level, such that “New College loses approximately 20% of its students in their first year of enrollment, and loses a larger proportion of students—26%—over the next 5 years.” (NCF QEP 2008, 11). …
Deconstruction At The Foot Of The Mountain: Second And Third Wave Feminist Theater As Collective And Solo Peformance, Amy Bartolotta
Deconstruction At The Foot Of The Mountain: Second And Third Wave Feminist Theater As Collective And Solo Peformance, Amy Bartolotta
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the notion of feminist theater in two chapters. The first chapter looks at the theater collective At the Foot of the Mountain as representative of second wave or cultural feminist theater in the United States. Through a collaborative working method and aesthetic vision informed by feminism, At the Foot of the Mountain strove to create theater as part of a uniquely “female culture.” The second chapter presents an understanding of feminist theater in response to the essentializing tendencies of cultural feminism. That is, if a collective structure represents the universalized sisterhood of cultural feminist theater, solo performance …
Walls Of Flesh: Abject Aesthetics, Coral Chepren-Moore
Walls Of Flesh: Abject Aesthetics, Coral Chepren-Moore
Theses & ETDs
The abject disturbs identity, system, and order. "Walls of Flesh: Abject Aesthetics" explores the aesthetics of the abject within the context of the gallery. It explores identity by exposing the viewer to artwork that lies in a state of liminality. Using the gallery as an artistic medium instead of backdrop for art, the system and order of a common space is disrupted, in an attempt to evoke abject responses from the viewers.
Simple, Not Easy: A Solution To Metabolic Syndrome, Forrester White
Simple, Not Easy: A Solution To Metabolic Syndrome, Forrester White
Theses & ETDs
Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of physiological factors that greatly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In order to promote public health through the prevention and reduction of Metabolic Syndrome the following questions were asked: What is a likely mechanism that leads to the manifestation of Metabolic Syndrome and which mode of exercise best prevents and reverses these abnormalities? Metabolic Syndrome is likely the result of behavioral factors, including overconsumption and sedentarism, which induce an adaptive insulin resistant mechanism to become protracted leading to compensatory hyperinsulinemia and clinical manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome. A combination of …
Romantic Deviants: A Queer Analysis Of The Same-Sex Relationship In American Homophile Publications, Fred Carriles
Romantic Deviants: A Queer Analysis Of The Same-Sex Relationship In American Homophile Publications, Fred Carriles
Theses & ETDs
I provide a queer analysis of how the same-sex relationship was discussed and conceptualized within three homophile publications. I analyzed 48 articles from the three most widely read homophile publications: the Ladder, ONE, and Mattachine Review. Data collection occurred in the qualitative research program NVivo. Here I coded the 48 documents in three consecutive stages: open, axial, and selective. Analysis of the data involved assessment of the thematic patterns produced through coding and historical contextualization of the period studied. My research revealed two ways in which authors of the homophile publications discuss the same-sex relationship. First, the dominant account of …
Our Wombs, Our Witchcraft: Women And Contemporary Feminism, Hana Alqasem
Our Wombs, Our Witchcraft: Women And Contemporary Feminism, Hana Alqasem
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I will examine the history of feminism and philosophy and how they intersect. I will observe how these connections have have informed our thought today. I will look at how our ideas about the body have changed or stayed the same and how feminism understands gendered embodiment. To conclude, I will look at how women's space might serve as an answer to the possible questions feminists ask today.
Personality Factors And Adversities Faced As Predictors Of Resilience Of Children In Foster Care, Ciera Lipps
Personality Factors And Adversities Faced As Predictors Of Resilience Of Children In Foster Care, Ciera Lipps
Theses & ETDs
Psychological resilience is considered a combination of internal and external factors that lead to positive psychological development despite facing adversities. Personality factors and the number of adversities faced by an individual have been examined in relation to resilience in children in the general population, however, how these factors relate specifically to children who are in foster care has not been examined. Based on previous findings with adults, it was hypothesized that extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness would be positively correlated with resilience in children in foster care, while neuroticism would be negatively correlated with resilience in these children. It was also …
Buff-Breasted Sandpiper Stopover Duration In The Rainwater Basin, Nebraska, In Relation To The Temporal And Spatial Migration Patterns In The Great Plains Of North America, John P. Mccarty, Joel G. Jorgensen, Justin M. Michaud, Lareesa Wolfenbarger
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Buff-breasted Sandpipers Calidris subruficollis are a species of significant conservation concern. Previous work shows densities are high during stopover in the Rainwater Basin of Nebraska, USA during the northward migration. However, one of the challenges for understanding the relationship between density at a given time and total numbers of birds using the area during a season is the lack of information about individual stopover duration. We used radio-telemetry to estimate stopover duration in the Rainwater Basin during 2006–2008. Based on information from 24 tagged individual birds, Buff-breasted Sandpiper stopover duration in the Rainwater Basin is ca. 24–48 hours for …

Effects Of A Relationship Strengthening Intervention On Quality Of Life Of Young Low-Income, Minority Parents, Rongrong Wang
Effects Of A Relationship Strengthening Intervention On Quality Of Life Of Young Low-Income, Minority Parents, Rongrong Wang
Public Health Theses
Partners in LIFE (PIL) is a 15-session relationship-based intervention delivered to young low-income minority parents (age 14-25). Fourty-nine parenting couples were recruited from urban pediatric clinics and randomized into PIL or a control group. PIL activities consisted of relationship strengthening (e.g., intimacy, empathy, communication, conflict resolution), parent education, and sexual health. The control group received only parent education. Participants were assessed at baselines and immediately after the intervention (4 months from baseline). Using within-groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) to account for the dependence of the data from time and dyad, we evaluated the effects of this intervention on physical and …
Exploring The Human Hepatocirrhosis Virus, Dawilmer Castillo
Exploring The Human Hepatocirrhosis Virus, Dawilmer Castillo
Undergraduate Review
The Human Hepatocirrhosis virus (HHV) is a virtual virus designed to model the characteristics of a real virus. HHV targets hepatocytes cells in the liver causing severe damage to the organ. Currently, there are no vaccines to combat this pathogen, however, there are medications that can decrease the propagation rate of the virus to new cells. This virion can enter the human body through the mucosa of the mouth, nose, genital area and open wounds in the skin. It is mainly transmitted from body fluids and contaminated water or food. HHV is an enveloped virus that encompasses a nucleocapsid containing …
