Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. Mcqueen Jan 2015

Mass Additivity And A Priori Entailment, Kelvin J. Mcqueen

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

The principle of mass additivity states that the mass of a composite object is the sum of the masses of its elementary components. Mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics but false in special relativity. Physicists have explained why mass additivity is true in Newtonian mechanics by reducing it to Newton’s microphysical laws. This reductive explanation does not fit well with deducibility theories of reductive explanation such as the modern Nagelian theory of reduction, and the a priori entailment theory of reduction that is prominent in the philosophy of mind. Nonetheless, I argue that a reconstruction of the explanation that …

Innovations In Representing Specific States Of Consciousness, Barry Klein

The Qualitative Report Conference

On-going research has not produced a sufficiently precise and practical methodology which could yield a substantive evolution in qualitative research, but I have developed techniques, from world traditions as well as from transpersonal research, for calibrating specific states during and right after they are experienced. Benefits of this could lead to improved treatments for disorders as well as for self-improvement and cross-cultural communications.

Biophysical Basis Of The Antagonistic Action Of Yap Transcriptional Regulator And Wwox Tumor Suppressor, Brett Schuchardt Jan 2015

Biophysical Basis Of The Antagonistic Action Of Yap Transcriptional Regulator And Wwox Tumor Suppressor, Brett Schuchardt

Open Access Theses

WW-domain containing proteins such as the antagonistic pair, YAP2 transcriptional regulator and WWOX tumor suppressor, mediate a multitude of homeostatic cellular processes including cell growth, proliferation, and apoptosis through specific interactions with shared PPXY-containing cognate ligands, which help transmit signals from the plasma membrane through the cytosol into the nucleus. Although there are numerous cell and mouse studies describing the signaling cascade events of such protein-protein interactions, the molecular basis of WW-PPXY interactions has yet to be explored. In addition, the ability of WW domains to act alone or in tandem, such as those found in YAP2 and WWOX, may …

Assessment Of Three Acute Responses To Traumatic Brain Injury, Shoshana Fireworker Jan 2015

Assessment Of Three Acute Responses To Traumatic Brain Injury, Shoshana Fireworker

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Traumatic brain injury has a devastating effect on millions worldwide each year. As yet, there are no methods which have been proven to improve recovery from the trauma. Current treatment protocols revolve around reducing secondary insult, such as hypoxia, hypotension, and cerebral edema, which raises intracranial pressure. The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of three responses to traumatic brain injury. Two of them, the administration of hypertonic saline and the administration of progesterone, are pharmacologic, while the third, the performance of a decompressive craniectomy, is surgically invasive. A number of original studies have been analyzed to …

Heterosis, assumed proportional to expected breed heterozygosity, was calculated for 6834 individuals with birth, weaning and yearling weight records from Cycle VII and advanced generations of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) project. Breeds represented in these data included: Angus, Hereford, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Limousin and Composite MARC III. Heterosis was further estimated by proportions of British × British (B × B), British × Continental (B × C) and Continental × Continental (C × C) crosses and by breed-specific combinations. Model 1 fitted fixed covariates for heterosis within biological types while Model 2 fitted …

Endothelial Surface Glycocalyx Can Regulate Flow-Induced Nitric Oxide Production In Microvessels In Vivo, Wanyi Yen, Bin Cai, Jinlin Yang, Lin Zhang, Min Zeng, John M. Tarbell, Bingmei M. Fu Jan 2015

Endothelial Surface Glycocalyx Can Regulate Flow-Induced Nitric Oxide Production In Microvessels In Vivo, Wanyi Yen, Bin Cai, Jinlin Yang, Lin Zhang, Min Zeng, John M. Tarbell, Bingmei M. Fu

Publications and Research

Due to its unique location, the endothelial surface glycocalyx (ESG) at the luminal side of the microvessel wall may serve as a mechano-sensor and transducer of blood flow and thus regulate endothelial functions. To examine this role of the ESG, we used fluorescence microscopy to measure nitric oxide (NO) production in post-capillary venules and arterioles of rat mesentery under reduced (low) and normal (high) flow conditions, with and without enzyme pretreatment to remove heparan sulfate (HS) of the ESG and in the presence of an endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitor, NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA). Rats (SD, 250–300g) were anesthetized. The mesentery …

Seasonality Of Fire Weather Strongly Influences Fire Regimes In South Florida Savanna-Grassland Landscapes, William J. Platt, Steve L. Orzell, Matthew G. Slocum Jan 2015

Seasonality Of Fire Weather Strongly Influences Fire Regimes In South Florida Savanna-Grassland Landscapes, William J. Platt, Steve L. Orzell, Matthew G. Slocum

Faculty Publications

Fire seasonality, an important characteristic of fire regimes, commonly is delineated using seasons based on single weather variables (rainfall or temperature). We used nonparametric cluster analyses of a 17-year (1993-2009) data set of weather variables that influence likelihoods and spread of fires (relative humidity, air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, soil moisture) to explore seasonality of fire in pine savanna-grassland landscapes at the Avon Park Air Force Range in southern Florida. A four-variable, three-season model explained more variation within fire weather variables than models with more seasons. The three-season model also delineated intra-annual timing of fire more accurately than a …

Journal Articles

Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) develop a myopathy in their ischemic lower extremities, which is characterized by myofiber degeneration, mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired limb function. Desmin, a protein of the cytoskeleton, is central to maintenance of the structure, shape and function of the myofiber and its organelles, especially the mitochondria, and to translation of sarcomere contraction into muscle contraction. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that disruption of the desmin network occurs in gastrocnemius myofibers of PAD patients and correlates with altered myofiber morphology, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired limb function. Using fluorescence microscopy, we evaluated desmin organization and …

Contact Analysis For Coupling Of Plates And Screws In Fracture Fixation Of Cortical Bone, Gaffar Gailani, Rachid Moumni, Malek Brahimi Jan 2015

Contact Analysis For Coupling Of Plates And Screws In Fracture Fixation Of Cortical Bone, Gaffar Gailani, Rachid Moumni, Malek Brahimi

Publications and Research

Internal fixation is a common treatment for bone fracture. Bone fracture occurs due to different reasons such as motor vehicle accidents, falling,…etc. The treatment is performed by fixing plate and screws to the fracture site. Lack of stability of the implants (plates and screws) may lead to delay in healing or failure of treatment. Micro-motion between the implant and the bone may cause formation of fibrous tissue around the screw which will lead to implant loosening. On the other hands, firm fixing of the conventional implants (Dynamic Compression Plates) may lead to delay resorption and delay in healing. Recently, Locked …

Dairy Consumption And Insulin Resistance: The Role Of Body Fat, Physical Activity, And Energy Intake, Larry A. Tucker, Andrea Erickson, James D. Lecheminant, Bruce W. Bailey Jan 2015

Dairy Consumption And Insulin Resistance: The Role Of Body Fat, Physical Activity, And Energy Intake, Larry A. Tucker, Andrea Erickson, James D. Lecheminant, Bruce W. Bailey

Faculty Publications

The relationship between dairy consumption and insulin resistance was ascertained in 272 middle-aged, nondiabetic women using a cross-sectional design. Participants kept 7-day, weighed food records to report their diets, including dairy intake. Insulin resistance was assessed using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). The Bod Pod was used to measure body fat percentage, and accelerometry for 7 days was used to objectively index physical activity. Regression analysis was used to determine the extent to which mean HOMA levels differed across low, moderate, and high dairy intake categories. Results showed that women in the highest quartile of dairy consumption had significantly greater …

Two Potential Hookworm Daf-16 Target Genes, Snr-3 And Lpp-1: Gene Structure, Expression Profile, And Implications Of A Cis-Regulatory Element In The Regulation Of Gene Expression, Xin Gao, Kevin Goggin, Camille Dowling, Jason Qian, John Hawdon Jan 2015

Two Potential Hookworm Daf-16 Target Genes, Snr-3 And Lpp-1: Gene Structure, Expression Profile, And Implications Of A Cis-Regulatory Element In The Regulation Of Gene Expression, Xin Gao, Kevin Goggin, Camille Dowling, Jason Qian, John Hawdon

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Hookworms infect nearly 700 million people, causing anemia and developmental stunting in heavy infections. Little is known about the genomic structure or gene regulation in hookworms, although recent publication of draft genome assemblies has allowed the first investigations of these topics to be undertaken. The transcription factor DAF-16 mediates multiple developmental pathways in the free living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and is involved in the recovery from the developmentally arrested L3 in hookworms. Identification of downstream targets of DAF-16 will provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanism of hookworm infection.

Methods

Genomic Fragment 2.23 containing a DAF-16 binding …

Human Rights In The Context Of Environmental Conservation On The Us-Mexico Border, Lisa Meierotto Jan 2015

Human Rights In The Context Of Environmental Conservation On The Us-Mexico Border, Lisa Meierotto

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2015

At Cabeza Priesta National Wildlife Refuge, a wilderness area on the US-Mexico border in Arizona, conflicting policies permit the provision of supplementary water for wildlife but not for undocumented immigrants passing through the area. Federal refuge environmental policy prioritizes active management of endangered and threatened species. Vast systems of water resources have been developed to support wildlife conservation in this extremely hot and dry environment. At the same time, humanitarian groups are not allowed to supply water to undocumented border crossers in the park. Human border-crossers must utilize non-potable wildlife water "guzzlers" for survival and face risk of illness or …

Lineage Sorting In Multihost Parasites: Eidmanniella Albescens And Fregatiella Aurifasciata On Seabirds From The Galapagos Islands, Jose Rivera-Parra, Iris Levin, Kevin Johnson, Patricia Parker

Biology Department Faculty Works

Parasites comprise a significant percentage of the biodiversity of the planet and are useful systems to test evolutionary and ecological hypotheses. In this study, we analyze the effect of host species identity and the immediate local species assemblage within mixed species colonies of nesting seabirds on patterns of genetic clustering within two species of multihost ectoparasitic lice. We use three genetic markers (one mitochondrial, COI, and two nuclear, EF1‐α and wingless) and maximum likelihood phylogenetic trees to test whether (1) parasites show lineage sorting based on their host species; and (2) switching of lineages to the alternate host species depends …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare systemic autoimmune disease characterized by skin and organ fibrosis. The pathogenesis of SSc and its progression are poorly understood. The SSc intrinsic gene expression subsets (inflammatory, fibroproliferative, normal-like, and limited) are observed in multiple clinical cohorts of patients with SSc. Analysis of longitudinal skin biopsies suggests that a patient's subset assignment is stable over 6-12 months. Genetically, SSc is multi-factorial with many genetic risk loci for SSc generally and for specific clinical manifestations. Here we identify the genes consistently associated with the intrinsic subsets across three independent cohorts, show the relationship between these genes …

Characterization Of Ambient Pm10 Bioaerosols In A California Agricultural Town, Judith C. Chow, Xufei Yang, Xiaoliang Wang, Steven D. Kohl, Patrick R. Hurbain, L.-W. Antony Chen, John G. Watson

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Ambient bioaerosols in PM10 samples were measured at three sites in Corcoran, an agricultural town in the southern San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California, during fall of 2000 corresponding to the cotton harvest season. Elevated bioaerosol concentrations were measured near grain elevators (GRA site) and a cotton handling facility (BAI site) as compared to levels in a residential community (COP site), ~2 km northeast of these sources. Average endotoxin levels (13 ± 17 EU/m3) at the grain elevator site were three to eight times higher than averages at the nearby cotton-handling and residential sites. The highest level (47.6 EU/m3) at …

Students in all three groups increased in clinical judgment scores and reported satisfaction in the individual clinical experience.

Monomials And Basin Cylinders For Network Dynamics, Daniel Austin, Ian H. Dinwoodie Jan 2015

Monomials And Basin Cylinders For Network Dynamics, Daniel Austin, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe methods to identify cylinder sets inside a basin of attraction for Boolean dynamics of biological networks. Such sets are used for designing regulatory interventions that make the system evolve towards a chosen attractor, for example initiating apoptosis in a cancer cell. We describe two algebraic methods for identifying cylinders inside a basin of attraction, one based on the Groebner fan that finds monomials that define cylinders and the other on primary decomposition. Both methods are applied to current examples of gene networks.

Active Immunotherapy And Adoptive Cell Transfer As An Effective Cancer Treatment, Philip Jay Cynamon Jan 2015

Active Immunotherapy And Adoptive Cell Transfer As An Effective Cancer Treatment, Philip Jay Cynamon

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

There are many ways to fight cancer using the body’s own immune system. Some methods include the administration of vaccines while others involve stimulatory factors injected near tumors. One promising method is enlisting the help of T cells. To fight cancer effectively, T cells must be able to recognize cancerous antigens and the environment in which these T cells reside must be conducive to their function, survival, and proliferation. This paper discusses a method of providing such an environment called adoptive cell transfer, as well as the elements that effect this protocol and the ways in which the environment can …

Mapping The Pareto Optimal Design Space For A Functionally Deimmunized Biotherapeutic Candidate, Regina S. Salvat, Andrew S. Parker, Yoonjoo Choi, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, Karl E. Griswold

Dartmouth Scholarship

The immunogenicity of biotherapeutics can bottleneck development pipelines and poses a barrier to widespread clinical application. As a result, there is a growing need for improved deimmunization technologies. We have recently described algorithms that simultaneously optimize proteins for both reduced T cell epitope content and high-level function. In silico analysis of this dual objective design space reveals that there is no single global optimum with respect to protein deimmunization. Instead, mutagenic epitope deletion yields a spectrum of designs that exhibit tradeoffs between immunogenic potential and molecular function. The leading edge of this design space is the Pareto frontier, i.e. the …

Linkages Between Reach-Scale Physical Habitat And Invertebrate Assemblages In Upland Streams, Victoria S. Milner, Nigel J. Willby, David J. Gilvear, Charles Perfect Jan 2015

Linkages Between Reach-Scale Physical Habitat And Invertebrate Assemblages In Upland Streams, Victoria S. Milner, Nigel J. Willby, David J. Gilvear, Charles Perfect

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Determining the influence of physical habitat on biological structure in minimally disturbed settings is important if the effects of alterations to physical habitat are to be understood. This study tested whether reach-scale differences in physical habitat influence macroinvertebrate community composition at 24 sites in the Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland. Stream reaches were classified into channel types based on a geomorphic typology (i.e. step-pool, bedrock, plane-bed and pool-riffle). PERMANOVA indicated an overall significant relationship between the geomorphic typology and macroinvertebrate species-level composition, and among all combinations of channel types (such as steppool and pool-riffle, step-pool and bedrock). Most channel types were dominated …
