Synthetic Approaches To The Understanding Of Dna Nucleobase Methylation, Jagruti Rana Jan 2015

Synthetic Approaches To The Understanding Of Dna Nucleobase Methylation, Jagruti Rana

Dissertations

DNA methylation is a major source of genetic variation and cancer. Methylation occurs when nucleophilic DNA bases react with methylating agent methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), dimethyl sulfate (DMS), N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU), N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), etc. N7-methyl-2'-deoxyguanosine (N7-methyl-dG, or 7MedG) adduct is the most abundant DNA methylation products for most methylating agents. DNA polymerase actions on 7MedG are difficult to study due to its instability against ring- opening hydrolysis and deglycosyl ati on. Oligonucleotides containing a single chemical adduct of 7MedG cannot be chemically synthesized. In addition, 7MedG is unstable in vivo …

Monitoring Of Cerebellar Injury Using Micro Ecog Signals In Ketamine/Xylazine Treated Rats, Gokhan Ordek

Dissertations

Much of the cerebellar research has been conducted in anesthetized animals, particularly using ketamine/xylazine combination in rats, and yet the absolute impact of the anesthesia on the neural circuit remains unanswered . In the current study, spontaneous electrical activity and sensory evoked potentials from the cerebellar surface with chronically implanted, flexible-substrate, multielectrode arrays in rats were collected and analyzed with the motor cortex signals. The power spectra and the intercontact coherence plots of the spontaneous activity in the awake-quiet animals extended up to 800 Hz in the cerebellum and only up to 200 Hz in the motor cortex. Ketamine/xylazine anesthesia …

E Pluribus Unum: What Individual Whales Can Tell Us About Enigmatic Species Distribution And Social Organization, Tanya Marie Lubansky

Dissertations

Large whales have historically been difficult to study and many aspects of their ecology remain unknown especially at the long -term population level. The ability to identify individual whales based on natural markings provides the opportunity to track individuals over time and space; this data may offer more insight into the ecology of whales than previously imagined. This study demonstrates use of photo-identification data to model both social structure and habitat selection, minimizing the need for invasive research and greatly increasing the sample size used in such endeavors. A conditional logistic model is written for a 20-year sightings dataset on …

Developing An Insulin Producing Tissue Using Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells, Neha Mahendrakumar Jain

Dissertations

This thesis describes derivation of pancreatic insulin producing cells (IPCs) from mouse embryonic stem cells and development of three-dimensional (3D) engineered tissue system to provide physiologic culture conditions for IPCs. Upon using a previously established protocol, IPCs have been successfully derived from mouse embryonic stem cells and characterized in vitro . IPCs not only express classical markers of pancreatic beta cells but also exhibit glucose responsive behavior. Interestingly while deriving IPCs from mouse embryonic stem cells, islet endothelial cells have also been identified and successfully isolated from the culture. Derivation of a pure population of endothelial cells expressing specific markers …

Inkjet Printing Multifunctional Chromatic Sensors And Chromism Study, Aide Wu

Dissertations

The thermochromism and chemochromism of polydiacetylene (PDAs) and PDA/ZnO nano composites have been systematically studied by attentuated total reflection (ATR)- Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), temperature-dependent Raman, colorimetric (using optical densitometry) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Reversibility of PDAs has been enhanced by the formation of chelation between the carboxylic groups on side chain of diacetylene and Zn ion. The thermochromatic transition temperature increases with the concentration of ZnO.

Thin films of polydiacetylene (PDAs) and PDA/ZnO nanocomposites have been successfully fabricated by inkjet printing both solution type and suspension type ink. Results suggest that PDA monomers are well-aligned and closely packed …

Polymeric Nitrogen By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, El Mostafa Benchafia

Dissertations

With the urgent need for new environmentally-friendly energetic materials, the field of polymeric nitrogen, predicted to be a high energy density energetic, is now at a critical stage in its development. In spite of extensive first principles calculations regarding the existence and stability of different polymeric nitrogen structures, their successful syntheses have been rare. This dissertation describes the first detailed study of a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) approach to the synthesis of polymeric nitrogen. PECVD provides non-equilibrium conditions known to produce high pressure-temperature phases. Molecular nitrogen mixed with hydrogen and argon is used as the gas phase precursor to …

Fates Of Spilt Oil And Factors Affecting The Bio-Degradation Of Oil: A Review, Amogh-Ranganath Chakravarthy

Theses

The usage of crude oil and its products is increasing; in turn, the number of spills is also going up. The inland spills are the more recurrent spills in the U.S today. This review article deals with the weathering of oils, which commences just after oil spills into the environment with various processes such as evaporation, dissolution, photo-oxidation, dispersion, emulsification and bio-degradation along with other possible fates. Biodegradation is one of the most significant processes of weathering which depends on oil physical and chemical characteristics, environmental characteristics, pH, salinity and oil concentration. There is a range of oil concentration for …

The Logging Ban Policy In Addressing Deforestation: A Comparison Between Thailand And Indonesia, Safrina Safrina Jan 2015

The Logging Ban Policy In Addressing Deforestation: A Comparison Between Thailand And Indonesia, Safrina Safrina

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The logging ban policy is applying in several countries, such as Thailand and Indonesia, in order to deal with deforestation and forest degradation in natural forests. However, both countries still have had difficulties resolving the problem. The logging ban in Thailand does not work as expected due to centralized systems of forestry policy that still applies in Thailand. However, Indonesia is actively adjusting the decentralized system, which gives authority to local governments to set policies regarding forestry. The effectiveness of logging ban to achieve conservation goals and economic development continues to be debated; however, it should be noted that the …

Marz: An Algorithm To Combinatorially Analyze Gapped N-Mer Models Of Transcription Factor Binding, Rowan G. Zellers, Robert A. Drewell, Jacqueline M. Dresch

Biology

Background: A key challenge in understanding the molecular mechanisms that control gene regulation is the characterization of the specificity with which transcription factor proteins bind to specific DNA sequences. A number of computational approaches have been developed to examine these interactions, including simple mononucleotide and dinucleotide position weight matrix models. Results: Here we develop a novel, unbiased computational algorithm, MARZ, that systematically analyzes all possible gapped matrices across a fixed number of nucleotides. In addition, to evaluate the ability of these matrix models to predict in vivo binding sites, we utilize a new scoring system and, in combination with established …

An Electrospinning Apparatus For The Production Of Heterogeneous Scaffolds And Their Application In Cartilage Regeneration, Andrew Ryan Hollingsworth

Theses

The human body contains a vast array of soft and hard tissues, each with their own unique set of physical, chemical, mechanical, and electrical properties. It is the combination of these tissues that allows the human body to function as it does. However, these tissues are subject to wear, fatigue, and injury and thus can potentially limit the functions of the body. Therefore, tissue engineering has sought various natural and synthetic materials that can be used for fabrication of cellular scaffolds that have the ability to promote cellular attachment, proliferation, differentiation, and eventual whole tissue formation for replacement and repair …

Background: Each year, approximately 11% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are 45 years of age or younger. These women have concerns specific to or accentuated by their age, including fertility-related concerns, and have higher rates of psychosocial distress than women diagnosed at older ages. Current guidelines recommend that fertility risks be considered early in all treatment plans; however, the extant research indicates that attention to fertility by the healthcare team is limited. Importantly, attention to fertility may be a proxy for whether or not other important issues warranting attention in younger women with breast cancer …

Combustion Dynamics Of Metal Powders In Mixed Gas Flows, Amy Lee Corcoran Jan 2015

Combustion Dynamics Of Metal Powders In Mixed Gas Flows, Amy Lee Corcoran

Theses

Predictive mechanisms for particle ignition and combustion rates are required in order to develop optimized propellant and energetic formulations using micron-sized metal powders, such as aluminum and magnesium. Most current descriptions are based on laboratory experiments performed in stationary or laminar combustion configurations using pure metals burned in single oxidizers. However, practical configurations take into account different metals, including alloys, that burn in various oxidizing environments and various flow conditions. Validity of the present descriptions for such environments has not been established. This experimental study is aimed to measure burn times for aluminum, magnesium, and mechanically alloyed Al-Mg particles burning …

To that end, in two different years, I taught an online and a face-to-face section of the same finite mathematics course. After analyzing the data regarding differences in the two sections for the first year, I incorporated changes intended to improve the consistency of project success between the two sections as well as the overall success of the class projects in the online section. My main tool was mimicking the interaction of group members and providing immediate instructor …

Love Games: A Game-Theory Approach To Compatibility, Kerstin Bever, Julie Rowlett Jan 2015

Love Games: A Game-Theory Approach To Compatibility, Kerstin Bever, Julie Rowlett

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this note, we present a compatibility test with a rigorous mathematical foundation in game theory. The test must be taken separately by both partners, making it difficult for either partner alone to control the outcome. To introduce basic notions of game theory we investigate a scene from the film "A Beautiful Mind" based on John Nash's life and Nobel-prize-winning theorem. We recall this result and reveal the mathematics behind our test. Readers may customize and modify the test for more accurate results or to evaluate interpersonal relationships in other settings, not only romantic. Finally, we apply Dyson's and Press's …

Gender And Water In Northeast Thailand: Inequalities And Women's Realities, Sari Andajani-Sutjahjo, Siriporn Chirawatkul, Erico Saito Jan 2015

Gender And Water In Northeast Thailand: Inequalities And Women's Realities, Sari Andajani-Sutjahjo, Siriporn Chirawatkul, Erico Saito

Journal of International Women's Studies

The water world is socially constructed, reflecting continuous global gender inequalities and discrimination by those who hold dominant perspectives on water. While there is a strong global acknowledgement of the roles of women in water management by the United Nations International Water for Life Decade 2005-2015, discourses on gender mainstreaming in water management are still marginalised and under-theorised. The Millennium Development Goal-7 on environmental sustainability, addressing the need of more than one billion people for a significant improvement to accessing safe drinking water and basic sanitation, stagnated without a strong political will to include gender ideology in mainstream water perspectives. …

Natural Woman, Unnatural Mother: The Convergence Of Motherhood And The "Natural" World In Alice Walker’S Meridian, Sampada Chavan Jan 2015

Natural Woman, Unnatural Mother: The Convergence Of Motherhood And The "Natural" World In Alice Walker’S Meridian, Sampada Chavan

Journal of International Women's Studies

Many cultures around the world equate being womanly to being motherly. However, all women are not physically or psychologically equipped to handle motherhood. What happens to these women who are burdened with motherhood and are unable to deal with it? Alice Walker’s protagonist in her novel Meridian is an otherwise accomplished woman, but she fumbles with the notion of ideal woman-ness. Cultural conventions also dictate that women are closer to nature and that motherhood is a “natural” and expected outcome in a woman’s life. While Meridian is close to nature, she has no interest in motherhood. This duality in her …
