Maybe Mermaids And Robots Are Lonely: 40 Stories And A Novella, Matthew Fogarty May 2015

Maybe Mermaids And Robots Are Lonely: 40 Stories And A Novella, Matthew Fogarty

Theses and Dissertations

Maybe Mermaids and Robots are Lonely comprises 40 stories and a novella all set in or around Detroit and featuring figures that have become almost legendary in American culture. Stories in the collection range in form from a more traditional, if quirky, realism to a somewhat more ethereal or slipstream or magical realism. In the title story, for example, we meet a pair of star-crossed lovers, a robot and a mermaid, who must find a way to bridge their different worlds. "Rollo is Rollo" is a more realist play on the Cain and Abel, good brother-bad brother story. There's an …

The Wrong Side Of History: A Comparison Of Modern And Historical Criminalization Laws, Javier Ortiz, Matthew Dick, Sara Rankin May 2015

The Wrong Side Of History: A Comparison Of Modern And Historical Criminalization Laws, Javier Ortiz, Matthew Dick, Sara Rankin

Homeless Rights Advocacy Project

Like many other cities throughout the country, Washington’s homeless population is being targeted through ordinances infused with a historical spirit of control and discrimination. The policy brief looks at the history of criminalization laws by focusing on historical criminalization laws and how they paved a way for current anti-homeless ordinances. The policy brief reveals that the spirit of historical criminalization laws is present in anti-homeless ordinances today. Since these historical laws have been repealed and overturned, so should anti-homeless ordinances that share the same spirit of control, exclusion, and discrimination.

The brief focuses on five historical laws and modern anti-homeless …

Washington's War On The Visibly Poor: A Survey Of Criminalizing Ordinances & Their Enforcement, Justin Olson, Scott Macdonald, Sara Rankin May 2015

Washington's War On The Visibly Poor: A Survey Of Criminalizing Ordinances & Their Enforcement, Justin Olson, Scott Macdonald, Sara Rankin

Homeless Rights Advocacy Project

Throughout the country, cities increasingly enact laws that punish behaviors necessary for survival. For those without shelter, there is no alternative but to conduct these behaviors in public. Camping outdoors, sleeping, going to the bathroom, receiving food, sitting or lying down on sidewalks — these laws target homeless people either in practice or outright. But until now, no one knew how widespread these laws are throughout Washington State, or how they are being enforced. This brief answers these questions.

HRAP researchers surveyed the municipal codes of seventy-two cities across Washington to identify ordinances that essentially criminalize homelessness in each jurisdiction. …

At What Cost: The Minimum Cost Of Criminalizing Homelessness In Seattle And Spokane, Joshua Howard, David Tran, Sara Rankin May 2015

At What Cost: The Minimum Cost Of Criminalizing Homelessness In Seattle And Spokane, Joshua Howard, David Tran, Sara Rankin

Homeless Rights Advocacy Project

Many studies around the country have demonstrated significant savings on incarceration, adjudication, and medical costs when funds are directed toward the creation of affordable housing. However, with the increasing prevalence of criminalization ordinances — ordinances that disparately impact the homeless — funds that could be used for affordable housing are being diverted toward their enforcement. Although existing studies address general costs and savings associated with housing homeless people, they do not address the costs directly attributable to criminalization ordinances. In an effort to shed light on these direct costs, the Seattle University Homeless Rights Advocacy Project has traced the following …

Predicting Bystander Attitudes Using Rape Myth Acceptance And Adherence To The Commodity Model Of Sex, Kimberly J. Johnson May 2015

Predicting Bystander Attitudes Using Rape Myth Acceptance And Adherence To The Commodity Model Of Sex, Kimberly J. Johnson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The high rate of sexual assault on college campuses has become a growing concern among college administrators. To combat the prevalence of sexual assault, colleges and universities have begun implementing mandatory bystander intervention training programs, which teach students to look for warning signs indicative of sexual assault and intervene before an assault occurs. Previous research has indicated that an individual’s endorsement of rape myths may play a role in whether or not that individual will intervene in a situation that may lead to sexual assault; however, little research has investigated from where beliefs in rape myths might stem. Sex educators …

The Impact Of Prison Deinstitutionalization On Community Treatment Services, Beverly D. Frazier, Hung-En Sung, Lior Gideon, Karla S. Alfaro May 2015

The Impact Of Prison Deinstitutionalization On Community Treatment Services, Beverly D. Frazier, Hung-En Sung, Lior Gideon, Karla S. Alfaro

Publications and Research

Background: With one in every 108 Americans behind bars, the deinstitutionalization of prisons is a pressing issue for all those facing the daunting challenges of successfully reintegrating ex-offenders into both their communities and the larger society. Given the strong evidence that treatment services, such as mental/behavioral health, alcohol/substance abuse, and primary healthcare may reduce recidivism, the large number of prisoner releases highlights the need for adequate treatment services in the community. It is within this context that the current study aims to examine the effects of prison deinstitutionalization on community based intervention modalities.

Methods: This study set out to address …

You Have The Right To Remain Silent, But Anything You Don’T Say May Be Used Against You: The Admissibility Of Silence As Evidence After Salinas V. Texas, Andrew M. Hapner May 2015

You Have The Right To Remain Silent, But Anything You Don’T Say May Be Used Against You: The Admissibility Of Silence As Evidence After Salinas V. Texas, Andrew M. Hapner

Florida Law Review

In Salinas v. Texas, the United States Supreme Court held that a suspect’s refusal to answer an officer’s questions during a noncustodial, pre-Miranda, criminal interrogation is admissible at trial as substantive evidence of guilt. In a plurality decision, Justice Samuel Alito emphasized that before a suspect can rely on the privilege against self-incrimination, the suspect must invoke the privilege. Consequently, because silence does not invoke the privilege, and because the petitioner failed to expressly invoke the privilege in words, the prosecutor’s use of his pre-Miranda silence during a noncustodial interrogation did not violate the Fifth Amendment. …

Lost In Compromise: Free Speech, Criminal Justice, And Attorney Pretrial Publicity, Margaret Tarkington May 2015

Lost In Compromise: Free Speech, Criminal Justice, And Attorney Pretrial Publicity, Margaret Tarkington

Florida Law Review

Prior approaches to examining attorney speech rights have failed to address pretrial publicity in a manner that protects the criminal justice system and the essential roles of the prosecutor and defense attorney therein, as discussed in Part I. Yet the access-to-justice theory, as discussed in Part II, attunes attorney speech rights to the role of the attorney in the proper and constitutional functioning of the justice system. As discussed in Part III, the very nature of the criminal justice system imposes vastly differing obligations and duties on the prosecution and defense and their respective attorney–client relationships. In Part IV, this …

Moving The Needle On Justice Reform: A Report On The American Justice Summit 2014, Daniel L. Stageman, Robert Riggs, Jonathan Gordon, Ethiraj G. Dattatreyan

Publications and Research

Executive Summary: Taking place over 5 hours during the afternoon of November 10th, 2014, in John Jay College’s Gerald W. Lynch Theater, the American Justice Summit was an unprecedented public meeting of some of the most important individuals working in contemporary criminal justice reform. The event placed these individuals in front of an audience of six hundred-odd practitioners, activists, students, elected officials, and policy professionals, in conversation with leading journalists and each other, to describe the scope and contours of the problems posed by the country’s dysfunctional and interlocking systems of criminal justice – mass incarceration, police-community relations, the system’s …

The P -Royden And P -Harmonic Boundaries For Metric Measure Spaces, Marcello Lucia, Michael J. Puls May 2015

The P -Royden And P -Harmonic Boundaries For Metric Measure Spaces, Marcello Lucia, Michael J. Puls

Publications and Research

Let p be a real number greater than one and let X be a locally compact, noncompact metric measure space that satisfy certain conditions. The p-Royden and p-harmonic boundaries of X are constructed by using the p-Royden algebra of functions on X and a Dirichlet type problem is solved for the p-Royden boundary. We also characterize the metric measure spaces whose p-harmonic boundary is empty.

The Fire This Time: Assessing The Scalability Of Supportive Service Programs For Young Men Of Color, A Case Study, Ronald James-Terry Taylor

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

After spending the spring 2014 semester teaching at an urban high school in New York City, I began to question specifically what could be done to better support my students; specifically the young men and boys of color. By serving as a volunteer in the Empowering Males Leadership Class (EMLC) during the spring of 2014, I developed an interest in understanding (1) how the program was effective in servicing young men and boys of color and (2) how the interplay between federal programs and local implementation was characterized. This analysis is a hybrid of political science and policy implementation analysis, …

Understanding Social Responsibility Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior: The Connecticut Gatekeeper Program, Dwight L. Norwood May 2015

Understanding Social Responsibility Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior: The Connecticut Gatekeeper Program, Dwight L. Norwood

Doctoral Dissertations

The public is often encouraged to engage in socially responsible behaviors for the good of society, sometimes on behalf of those most vulnerable; older adults are one such rapidly growing vulnerable population. Nationally policies trend toward helping older adults remain at home rather than entering skilled nursing facilities when they encounter difficulty looking after themselves due to failing health. Although community supports are available, many are unlikely to access them, due to the very nature of their problems, such as depression and dementia. Across the U.S., gatekeeper programs encourage community members to make referrals to social service agencies which can …
