"Punctuality Is The Thief Of Time": The Earnest Pursuit Of Social Media In The Library, Elyse L. Profera, Maria Atilano

Charleston Library Conference

The way social media tools are selected and used in the library changes regularly in an evolving digital and social climate. The opportunities social media presents to the library community includes, but is not restricted to, user engagement, professional networking, informational exchange, and increasing the discoverability of existing online resources at the library.

Taylor & Francis recently released its white paper entitled “Use of Social Media by the Library: Current Practices and Future Opportunities.” The white paper has been researched and compiled by Taylor & Francis to provide an overview of current practices relating to the use of social media …

Expanding Dimensionality In Cinema Color: Impacting Observer Metamerism Through Multiprimary Display, David L. Long Sep 2015

Expanding Dimensionality In Cinema Color: Impacting Observer Metamerism Through Multiprimary Display, David L. Long

Theses

Television and cinema display are both trending towards greater ranges and saturation of reproduced colors made possible by near-monochromatic RGB illumination technologies. Through current broadcast and digital cinema standards work, system designs employing laser light sources, narrow-band LED, quantum dots and others are being actively endorsed in promotion of Wide Color Gamut (WCG). Despite artistic benefits brought to creative content producers, spectrally selective excitations of naturally different human color response functions exacerbate variability of observer experience. An exaggerated variation in color-sensing is explicitly counter to the exhaustive controls and calibrations employed in modern motion picture pipelines. Further, singular standard observer …

Simplification: An Effective Visual Solution For Graphic Design, Yihan Wang Sep 2015

Simplification: An Effective Visual Solution For Graphic Design, Yihan Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Simplification, as an effective visual solution, is frequently applied in modern graphic design. During my graduate studies, this method was integrated with each project including identity design, package design and print design. As a result, it not only helped clarify thoughts in the creative process, but it also helped form a relatively consistent style. However, since graphic design refers to communication via visual elements, this presents the problem of whether simplification affects the transfer of information. In other words, the degree to which the visual language should be literal needs discussion and exploration. Contrary to the simplified expression of graphic …

Interrogating The Dynamics Of Regulations On The Design Of Energy Performance In Housing, S Bradbury Sep 2015

Interrogating The Dynamics Of Regulations On The Design Of Energy Performance In Housing, S Bradbury

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Regulations are embedded in the practices of architects and, with growing regulatory complexity, particularly in the context of energy, understanding the role of regulations in shaping design decisions is becoming increasingly important. This paper conceptualizes the design of buildings as a socio-technical process. Using actor-network theory and controversy mapping techniques, it considers in detail how regulations, including non-energy-related regulations, interact with the design process to shape the energy performance of a dwelling for which I was the project architect. In doing so, the paper reveals that regulations are embedded in the design process and their flexibility impacts upon both the …

In Western culture, the pervading medical model of disability has characterized disability as a problem in need of a solution: an unwanted condition that demands a cure. Even the word “disability” is unavoidably negative: structurally it signifies a loss or a lack, a state that exists only because it falls short of something better. Contrary to mainstream thinking, disability is not a natural state of inferiority or a stroke of misfortune; rather, disability is a culturally fabricated narrative of embodiment. As Scully (2008) observes, representations of disability, created in the main by non-disabled people, tell normative bodies what they want …

Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane Sep 2015

Reciprocal Relationships And Creative Expression In Literacy Learning: Ameliorating Disability Circumstances And Empowering Individuals, Laurel Ann Lane

Special Education ETDs

Individuals engaged in the production of art, who are untrained, and marginalized by disability, are known as outsider or visionary artists. With them in mind I sought to better understand the relationship between art-making and meaning-making. Students with disability attributes in my classroom were motivated by arts-based activities, prompting me to include art in the content I taught. My own art-making grew out of those efforts, and in order to better understand how to implement my classroom practices, I began an autoethnographic study that evolved into phenomenology, positioning myself in the disability culture first, and then conducting an archival document …

On Security Of Content-Based Video Stream Authentication, Swee Won Lo, Zhou Wei, Deng, Robert H., Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Content-based authentication (CBA) schemes are used to authenticate multimedia streams while allowing content-preserving manipulations such as bit-rate transcoding. In this paper, we survey and classify existing transform-domain CBA schemes for videos into two categories, and point out that in contrary to CBA for images, there exists a common design flaw in these schemes. We present the principles (based on video coding concept) on how the flaw can be exploited to mount semantic-changing attacks in the transform domain that cannot be detected by existing CBA schemes. We show attack examples including content removal, modification and insertion attacks. Noting that these CBA …

Perceived Adequacy Of Illumination, Spatial Brightness, Horizontal Illuminance And Mean Room Surface Exitance In A Small Office, James Duff, Kevin Kelly, Christopher Cuttle

Articles

This paper presents a pilot study that investigated the suitability of mean room surface exitance as a predictor of spatial brightness and perceived adequacy of illumination, and then compared these results with how horizontal illuminance predicted both items under the same conditions. The experiment included 26 participants. A small office was used for the study. It exposed participants to three levels of mean room surface exitance, each delivered with three different light distributions and across three different surface reflectances, resulting in a total of 27 light scenes. A clear relationship existed between mean room surface exitance and both perceived adequacy …

Comparing Outcomes From An Online Substance Abuse Treatment Program And Residential Treatment Programs For Consumers Who Are Deaf: A Pilot Study, Josphine Wilson Ph.D., Deb Guthmann Ed.D., Jared Embree, Susan Fraker

JADARA

Numerous barriers exist when attempting to provide culturally appropriate substance use disorder (SUD) treatment to persons who are Deaf, including a lack of accessible community-based treatment providers. To address these barriers, the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA) Program has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate cessation and recovery support services via a telemedicine program to Deaf individuals who are clinically diagnosed with a SUD. This study was conducted to assess whether an online SUD treatment program, such as DODA, is an effective way to serve the Deaf population, which is underserved due to communication and other cultural barriers. DODA’s effectiveness …

Branding A Professional American Football Franchise, John J. Ragone Jr. Aug 2015

Branding A Professional American Football Franchise, John J. Ragone Jr.

Theses

The original intent of my thesis was to create a professional-level team identity that a community can embrace and emotionally bond with by utilizing contemporary design trends. As I researched the visual aspects of the brand strategy, it became apparent that current trends toward multiplicity of uniform designs could become a threat to an organization’s brand equity.

A corporate identity is the strategically engineered “personality” of an organization created to facilitate business objectives. How that identity is perceived and accepted supports relationship building between an organization and its audience or customers. Brand equity is developed through ease of recognition and …

Vocal Communication Of Wild Western Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla), Roberta Salmi Aug 2015

Vocal Communication Of Wild Western Gorillas (Gorilla Gorilla), Roberta Salmi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The communication system of a species is the fundamental basis upon which animal social relationships are built and contributes to a species' social organization. Among group-living anthropoid primates that inhabit forested environments, vocal signals are likely to be one of the most important communication channels because reduced visibility limits the use of visual communication. Accordingly, many primates have different vocalizations that convey meaningful information to conspecifics about caller behavior, external objects or events and cues used in recognizing individuals. Thus, in order to better understand the social and ecological factors that have shaped a species' vocal communication system, we must …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The objective of this thesis is to examine the ontology of my artwork and contextualize it within the framework of trauma, horror and feminism. My artwork focuses on the effects of internalized violence on cognitive and bodily processes, which manifest as haunting and repetition. In my artistic production, I use the unconscious methodologically, and I rely on pattern emergence and analysis to refine my works conceptually. In this thesis: I relate visual and conceptual aspects of my MFA Thesis Exhibition artworks to the traits of trauma most relevant to my work, namely haunting and repetition; I outline the patterns that …

Bystander Apathy: An Investigation Of Intervening Versus Non-Intervening Bystanders In Witnessing To Bullying, Alexandria Smith Aug 2015

Bystander Apathy: An Investigation Of Intervening Versus Non-Intervening Bystanders In Witnessing To Bullying, Alexandria Smith

HIM 1990-2015

David Cash was a college student who found himself in the women's restroom of the Primadonna in Nevada. He witnessed his friend, Jeremy Strohmeyer raping and killing a 7-year-old girl. Cash did not take any action in trying to prevent this heinous crime. There are many elements to consider when bystanders neglect to take action. Research examining bystander apathy in critical situations is lacking, yet the number of violent crimes witnessed by others where intervention is not offered continues to escalate. Bullying often occurs in the presence of others. Bystander apathy is believed to play a passive role in most …

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum Aug 2015

Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum

Faculty and Staff Publications

A linguistic landscape signifies language used within a physical or virtual public space, in which communication is presented in typographic form, portraying a message to an audience. Within the state of Israel, the linguistic landscape presents a unique situation in which it is common to view municipal and commercial multilingual signs that are designed using Hebrew, English, and Arabic letterforms. By studying the diverse linguistic landscape within Israeli urban environments, the article offers perspectives on the use of multilingual visual language, based on discussions with five Israeli designers in the summer of 2015.

A Visual Analysis Of Articulated Motion Complexity Based On Optical Flow And Spatial-Temporal Features, Beau Michael Christ Aug 2015

A Visual Analysis Of Articulated Motion Complexity Based On Optical Flow And Spatial-Temporal Features, Beau Michael Christ

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The understanding of motion is an important problem in computer vision with applications including crowd-flow analysis, video surveillance, and estimating three-dimensional structure. A less-explored problem is the visual characterization and quantification of motion complexity. An important motion class that is prevalent in living beings is articulated motion (segments connected by joints). At present, no known standardized measure for quantifying the complexity of articulated motion exists. Such a measure could facilitate advanced motion analysis with applications including video indexing, motion comparison, and advanced biological study of visual signals in organisms.

This dissertation presents an in-depth study of the development of several …
