The Teleological Effect Of Neoliberalism On American Higher Education [Special Section], Paul E. Bylsma

College Student Affairs Leadership

This article explores the impact of a neoliberal political and economic context on American higher education, arguing that the purpose of higher education has been reduced to a transactional process rather than maintaining its transformative potential. Recommendations to mitigate this phenomenon are presented.

The Relationship Between Social Networks, Exchange And Kids’ Food In Children’S Peer Culture, Stephanie Tillman Melton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates children’s peer culture, social networks and the role that kids’ food plays in peer exchanges during middle childhood. During this stage children develop social competencies as they join peer groups with other children and become socialized into children’s peer culture. In order to immerse myself within children’s culture, I conducted ethnographic fieldwork at two afterschool programs providing care for elementary school children. I investigated friendships, social networks and exchanges among third through fifth grade children at the programs. The study included participant observation and participatory group interviews with a sample of the children at both sites. The …

Cut From The Same Cloth: The Us Textile And Apparel Industry And Post-Disaster Designs For Haiti, Ransford Edwards Jr.

Humanities and Politics Faculty Articles

In the aftermath of the 2010 Haitian earthquake, various neoliberal strategies have been advanced to help in short-term disaster mitigation and reconstruction, as well as more long-term improvements in the country’s overall economic integration and growth. One such strategy has been focused on revitalizing the country’s apparel assembly industries through an aggressive expansion of export processing zones (EPZs). The disaster, it appears, represented an important opportunity to improve economic conditions by reorganizing the country’s role in the global apparel commodity chain. However, this reorganization conflicts with the preferences of US textile and apparel producers who have used trade preference programs …

Sustainability: What The Entrepreneurship Educators Think, L Wyness, P Jones, R Klapper Nov 2015

Sustainability: What The Entrepreneurship Educators Think, L Wyness, P Jones, R Klapper

Plymouth Institute of Education

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to consider the understanding and presence of sustainability within entrepreneurship education. The extant literature on sustainability within the entrepreneurship discipline remains extremely limited. Previously, sustainability within an entrepreneurship context has related to economic viability as opposed to sustainability in its broadest sense. This study explores, through a survey of entrepreneurship educators, three key research questions, namely, how entrepreneurship educators believe that entrepreneurs can contribute to solving sustainability problems. Second, to what extent education about sustainability is integrated within existing entrepreneurship curricula. Finally, what considerations are being made to include sustainability within future programmes. …

The Africa Command: How The Department Of Defense Has Continued America’S Ad-Hoc Foreign Policies In Africa Through Neo-Orientalism, Katherine T. Roseman Nov 2015

The Africa Command: How The Department Of Defense Has Continued America’S Ad-Hoc Foreign Policies In Africa Through Neo-Orientalism, Katherine T. Roseman

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The Africa Command (AFRICOM) was established in October 2008 on the premise of a partnership between the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and African militaries in which shared goals were to be pursued and each side was to learn from the other. However, no African counterparts were consulted during the processes leading up to the establishment of the Command. Notwithstanding the oft-repeated rhetoric of “partnerships” by the Bush Administration, in reality, AFRICOM was created to more effectively implement U.S. foreign policy in Africa, most notably containing terrorism after 9/11. This thesis examines the relationship between the U.S. and Africa …

Thailand's Cause Lawyers And Twenty-First Century Military Coups: Nation, Identity, And Conflicting Visions Of The Rule Of Law, Frank W. Munger Nov 2015

Thailand's Cause Lawyers And Twenty-First Century Military Coups: Nation, Identity, And Conflicting Visions Of The Rule Of Law, Frank W. Munger

Articles & Chapters

Conflict among Thailand's legal advocates for popular causes over the legitimacy of Thailand's two twenty-first-century coups raises questions about the meaning of the rule of law. The general perception of inexorable globalization of an international interpretation of the rule of law and of cause lawyers as one of its important vectors runs counter to the experience of developing societies where rule of law is being adapted to the meaning of nation and individual identities informing everyday lives and the relationship between a society and its government. This essay uses career narratives of Thai cause lawyers to illustrate this point by …

Cbfa 2015 Business And Human Flourishing - A Holistic Visual Model, John Visser

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The reputation and, to a lesser degree the practice of business, perhaps more than those of any other institution, suffer from the kind of reductionism that is the stepchild of dualistic and secular thinking. Some business-bashing is deserved, since some businesses operate in a very opportunistic ways, but much of it can be traced back to a misunderstanding of what business is and does. Unfortunately, once we have been fooled into thinking that life can be compartmentalized, and that we can wall off religious beliefs from the rest of life, and that our economic lives belong on the secular side …

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp Oct 2015

Pottery Exchange And Interaction At The Crystal River Site (8ci1), Florida, Kassie Christine Kemp

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Crystal River site (8CI1) is a Woodland-period mound (ca. 1000 BC to AD 1050) complex located on the west-central Gulf coast of Florida. Links to the Hopewell Interaction Sphere suggest that the people of Crystal River had connections with a broad range of communities, yet little is known concerning the role the site played in local, regional, or long-distance exchange networks. Pottery traditions vary amongst different communities of practice, therefore the level of interaction at Crystal River can be measured by looking at variation in the ceramic assemblage. I combine type/attribute, vessel form and function, gross paste, and chemical …

What initiatives and projects are going on around us? Why should I want to be involved? We addressed these questions and more at this Thursday Forum.

Permanently Grassroots With Neighborspace, Ben R. Helphand Oct 2015

Permanently Grassroots With Neighborspace, Ben R. Helphand

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The history of community gardening in North America has followed a boom and bust cycle; expanding in times of crisis only to retract when a feeling of security returns. This jarring cycle is facilitated by a view of community gardens as a temporary, pop-up, land-use. By framing gardens from the onset as ephemeral it is assumed that they will one day be replaced by a “higher and better use.” In order to break out of this cycle and have a permanent place in the urban geography it is imperative that models are developed that provide both long-term land security and …

Supporting Our Land Stewards: Building A Constituency To Change Policy And Preserve Philadelphia’S Gardens, Amy Laura Cahn Esq.

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

No one knows exactly how many community gardens exist throughout Philadelphia’s diverse neighborhoods, but there are hundreds. Yet, the majority of gardens, including some of the oldest and most established, are land insecure and at risk of displacement. The Public Interest Law Center Garden Justice Legal Initiative (GJLI) works to ensure that residents have the resources and tools they need to create and preserve farms and gardens. Over the past four years, GJLI has used law and organizing in collaboration with a multitude of partners to build a political voice for Philadelphia’s gardeners and farmers. Together, we are changing policy, …
