Industrial Facilities, Public Parks And Community Composition: Examining Environmental Justice In Lincoln, Nebraska, Brynn Stewart

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Environmental injustice involves the discrimination of low-income or minority populations in regards to environmental conditions in comparison to society at large. This study uses the net-environmental equity concept to analyze the state of environmental justice in the city of Lincoln, Nebraska. To what extent are Lincoln’s environmental burdens located around low-income/minority residents? To what extent are Lincoln’s environmental benefits located away from low-income/minority residents? To what extent do Lincoln’s policies promote environmental justice? A distributional analysis of Lincoln’s public park system and toxic releasing industries is completed along with a policy review. Lincoln’s policies and environmental conditions of minority residents …

Affordable Housing For Sustainable Cities: A North American Perspective, Detroit Metropolitan Area And Montreal (Quebec), Courtney Lauren Anderson, Maryse Grandbois Apr 2015

Affordable Housing For Sustainable Cities: A North American Perspective, Detroit Metropolitan Area And Montreal (Quebec), Courtney Lauren Anderson, Maryse Grandbois

Faculty Publications By Year

Housing is an integral part to elevating and maintaining a quality of life to ensure a healthy and productive citizenship. The overwhelming number of citizens in Montreal and the United States who are unable to find housing that is less than 33% of their income stifles that economic progression of individuals and the society in which these individuals live. The ability for cities to dictate their own plans for creating and maintaining affordable housing without mandates from the federal vacillates among the various levels of government with each level having certain positive and negative elements. Although city autonomy can provide …

Walkable Scores For Selected Three East Texas Counties: Physical Activity And Policy Implications, Wycliffe W. Njororai Simiyu, Fletcher J. Njororai, Billystrom Aronya Jivetti

Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: Physical activity has become an important intervention against overweight and obesity cases in the USA and worldwide. One key aspect of physical activity is walking, which has been identified as a component that can easily be incorporated into one’s lifestyle. Recent studies on physical activity have focused on promoting walking as a health enhancing endeavor. In 2010, the proportion of Texas adults who reported no participation in leisure time activity (26.7%) was significantly higher than the national average (24.4%). However, many Texans, like most Americans, are sedentary. Purpose: This study examined the walkability of the environments in selected counties …

Incubating Success: Building Capacity For Minority Social Entrepreneurs In Central City, New Orleans, Department Of Planning And Urban Studies, University Of New Orleans

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations

Since Hurricane Katrina, entrepreneurial activity in New Orleans has grown faster than the national average (Plyer, Ortiz, Horwitz, & Hobor, 2013). Nationally, however, there is an overall lack of minority startups that are backed by venture capital (Schmid, 2015). These disparities are evident in New Orleans as well (Walker, 2014). The Foundation for Louisiana (FFL) and Camelback Ventures (Camelback) seek to address this issue through the creation of an empowerment incubator for minority entrepreneurs near the LaSalle St. corridor in Central City, New Orleans.

To this end, FFL and Camelback commissioned the UNO-PLUS Community Development Finance Capstone team to examine …

"Breaking Out Of The Bubble": Becoming Self-Reflexive In Community-Based Learning Classes At Swarthmore College, Natalia Choi , '15 Apr 2015

"Breaking Out Of The Bubble": Becoming Self-Reflexive In Community-Based Learning Classes At Swarthmore College, Natalia Choi , '15

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

In my Sociology/Anthropology and Educational studies thesis, I explore the processes of self-reflexivity in the context of community-based learning (CBL) classes at Swarthmore College. Drawing upon interviews with professors and students in CBL classes, written materials such as syllabi and students’ reflections, and participant observation in CBL classes, my findings suggest that professors have a critical role to play in supporting students’ process of becoming more self-reflexive. By pairing students’ experiences with critical reflection in the curricula and leading by example, professors can guide students to have profound learning experiences about themselves as well as other communities. Such engagement in …

Cohesion\, Flexibility\, And The Mediating Effects Of Shared Vision And Compassion On Engagement In Army Acquisition Teams, Edward Straub Apr 2015

Cohesion\, Flexibility\, And The Mediating Effects Of Shared Vision And Compassion On Engagement In Army Acquisition Teams, Edward Straub

Student Scholarship

This study examines shared vision and compassion as mediating factors and their impact on the effect of cognitive cohesion\, emotional cohesion\, and flexibility on individual engagement. For over 50 years defense acquisitions have been studied with little improvement in how weapons systems are developed and delivered to the U.S. military. This study takes a novel perspective in analyzing army defense acquisitions teams taking cues from systems theory\, emotional intelligence\, and family systems. Our survey of 412 individuals in an Army Life Cycle Management Command revealed an interesting link between individual team member perceptions regarding team cohesion and flexibility and the …

Paving A Two-Way Street: The Rewards And Challenges Of Archival Projects With Community Partners, Eva Guggemos, Joanne Riley, Kathleen Spring, Rachael Woody

Faculty & Staff Presentations

Academic libraries are increasingly engaged in establishing community-based archives programs, often with digital preservation, delivery, and exhibit components. Often these activities are in response to local communities' needs to document valuable and vulnerable cultural heritage materials, fueled by the understanding that community partnerships create mutually beneficial opportunities for the academic institution, students, and staff. From a practical standpoint, institutions need to be able to identify potential points of synergy and challenge when working with both internal and external communities on collaborative digital projects; however, this can be difficult for institutions that are new to this kind of collaboration. Understanding the …

We Have Only Scratched The Surface: The Role Of Student Research In Institutional Repositories, Betty Rozum, Becky Thoms, Scott Bates, Danielle M. Barandiaran

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Institutional repositories (IRs) and other research archives have at their core the mission to disseminate the scholarship of their communities. At universities, this content is often expected to come primarily from faculty and professional researchers. Certainly, faculty are significant producers of scholarship, but students also make worthy contributions to this body of knowledge. Graduate students, at least, are generally recognized as creators of information, and in recent years, IRs have been successfully collecting theses and dissertations written by masters and doctoral students. However, another important and often overlooked group is undergraduate students.

Visions Of Public Space: Reproducing And Resisting Social Hierarchies In A Community Garden, Sofya Aptekar Mar 2015

Visions Of Public Space: Reproducing And Resisting Social Hierarchies In A Community Garden, Sofya Aptekar

Publications and Research

Urban public spaces are sites of struggles over gentrification. In increasingly diverse cities, these public spaces also host interactions among people of different class, race, ethnicity, and immigration status. How do people share public spaces in contexts of diversity and gentrification? I analyze the conflicting ways of imagining shared spaces by drawing on an ethnographic study of a community garden in a diverse and gentrifying neighborhood in New York City, conducted between 2011 and 2013. I examine how conflicts among gardeners about the aesthetics of the garden and norms of conduct reproduce larger gentrification struggles over culture and resources. Those …

A "Digital Wasteland": Modernist Periodical Studies, Digital Remediation, And Copyright, Roxanne Shirazi

Graduate Student Publications and Research

The nonlinearity of magazine reading is an important consideration in the emerging field of modernist periodical studies, one that deserves greater attention in the development of digital collections. As modernist scholars begin to generate a theoretical foundation for periodical studies it becomes evident that digital technologies must go beyond reproducing the printed page. This paper reviews recent scholarship and digital projects in modernist periodical studies and introduces non-consumptive research methods as a partial solution to the post-1923 copyright conundrum.

Citizens Or Customers? Transit Agency Approaches To Community Engagement, Gerard C. Wellman Mar 2015

Citizens Or Customers? Transit Agency Approaches To Community Engagement, Gerard C. Wellman

Journal of Public Transportation

This research considers what public administrators at mass transit agencies say they do in pursuit of engagement with their communities. The decisions that public administrators in transit agencies make regarding service retrenchment or expansion have deep, profound consequences on poor and vulnerable transit-dependent populations. Such transit administrators exercise a great deal of power over their ridership’s lives since agency decisions have real-world consequences. Therefore, it is a critical research question to examine the methods, techniques, and underlying rationale of transit administrators’ pursuit of community engagement. This research finds that public transportation agency approaches to community engagement can be typified into …
