Pervasively Offside: A Gendered Analysis Of Sportscasting, Michael Mudrick May 2015

Pervasively Offside: A Gendered Analysis Of Sportscasting, Michael Mudrick

Doctoral Dissertations

Despite a growth in sports media, female sportscasters are often perceived with low credibility. Furthermore, though women have been included in sport-related broadcasts, they are seldom given the opportunity to exhibit credibility, a key ingredient toward establishing reputability. This conundrum is rooted in sexism and endorsements of sport as a male-congruent entity. The present study examines the influence of gender-norm endorsement and sexism on perceived sportscaster credibility with a sample of 544 individuals who watched a basketball debate between a male and a female sportscaster. . Results suggest that gendered behavior beliefs and sexist attitudes had a negative effect on …

Financing Small Market Baseball: A Case Study Of The Auburn Doubledays, Derek Wohlfarth May 2015

Financing Small Market Baseball: A Case Study Of The Auburn Doubledays, Derek Wohlfarth

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Professional baseball has been played in Auburn, New York, since 1958, but over the last few years, the team has experienced a period of financial losses. The biggest hit was in 2013, when the team lost $125,000. The City of Auburn, which owns the team, no longer has the money to support the franchise, so in order to keep baseball in Auburn, the team must become self-sufficient. Auburn is the second-smallest market in the league, so the community needs to get behind the team in order for it to stay in operation. New management came in for the 2014 season …

Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

A hundred years ago, Babe Ruth strode to the plate and cracked his first major league home run on May 5, 1915. Twenty years later he would hit No. 714, a milestone that would stand for generations. 712, 713, and 714 came in Pittsburgh a few weeks before his retirement, and 714 was the first ball ever hit over the roof of Forbes Field in right, and it came to rest in a small park across the street. It was the longest home run, some would say, of his career.

Eye Movements Of Highly Identified Sport Fans, Michele N. Murdock May 2015

Eye Movements Of Highly Identified Sport Fans, Michele N. Murdock

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Individuals who are highly identified with a sport team have a strong psychological connection with the team (Wann et al., 2001). Sport team identification can be beneficial to communities and individuals. It provides entertainment, helps form group affiliation, and improves self-esteem. Because team identification is important to people, they notice environmental cues related to the team. Individuals are more likely to attend to a stimulus that is liked or one that is familiar. When an individual has accessible attitudes toward an object, he or she is more likely to attend to and notice the object (Roskos-Ewoldsen & Fazio, 1992). The …

Exploring Organizational Capacity In A Sport For Development And Peace Setting., Per G. Svensson May 2015

Exploring Organizational Capacity In A Sport For Development And Peace Setting., Per G. Svensson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) scholarship has noted the need for exploring organizational aspects in order to advance SDP theory and practice. One particular unexplored aspect of SDP is organizational capacity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore elements of organizational capacity in SDP organizations operating programming in urban settings outside the top three metropolitan areas (New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago) of the United States. The researcher conducted semistructured interviews with Executive Directors of 17 nonprofit organizations. This qualitative inquiry was guided by Hall et al.’s (2003) three-dimensional framework on organizational capacity. Those three dimensions …

Exploring Motivations, Constraints, And Perceptions Toward Sport Consumers' Smartphone Usage., Sun J. Kang May 2015

Exploring Motivations, Constraints, And Perceptions Toward Sport Consumers' Smartphone Usage., Sun J. Kang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today’s technology trend in the United States is influenced by the growing population of 182.6 million smartphone users (Statista Inc., 2015). The technology trend has also affected the sport consumption behaviors in terms of how they obtain information, share similar interests, and purchase goods in support of their fandom. The range of efforts varies depending on sport consumers’ level of fandom and their technological comfort level towards using a smartphone. Thus, understanding the relationship between sport and technology provides benefits for sport managers to discover innovative ways to further engage current fans and attract new consumers using smartphones. Considering the …

Mlb Franchises & Predictors Of Valuation, Danielle Marie Willett May 2015

Mlb Franchises & Predictors Of Valuation, Danielle Marie Willett

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There have been many studies done, for MLB, regarding multiple economic factors, yet there is previous research done to investigate the predictors a team's valuation. This study aims to investigate what, if any, of certain predictor variables effect the valuation of an MLB franchise over a five year span, beginning in 2008. The study includes 29 MLB franchises and looks at secondary fiscal and performance data throughout the five year span. The results of a regression analysis concluded that three predictor variables, market size, average ticket price, and salary expense, were significant indicators of valuation while the remainder of the …

An Examination Of Athletes And Non-Athletes Academic Performance At The Division Iii Level, Troy A. Lemke

This research examines athletes and non-athletes’ academic performance at the Division III collegiate level. The sample that was taken for this study was comprised of two groups of Division III college students. Athletes, that participate in intercollegiate athletics and non-athletes, that do not. Results of this study supports the following hypothesis: Division III college athletes have similar to lower academic success than those that do not participate in sports. A behavioral and demographic survey was administered to one hundred and sixty seven students and student-athletes (84 non-athletes and 83 athletes) at a Division III University, in the Midwest. A twelve …

Prevalence Of Neurocognitive Test Failure Following Exertion In Athletes Recovering From Concussion, Caitlin Laura Zaring May 2015

Prevalence Of Neurocognitive Test Failure Following Exertion In Athletes Recovering From Concussion, Caitlin Laura Zaring

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The current return-to-play (RTP) protocol in place for an athlete recovering from a concussion is based on the subjective measure of self-report rather than more objective tools such as computerized neurocognitive testing. Because of this, it is possible that athletes downplay or lie about symptoms they are experiencing in order to expedite the RTP process. The purpose of the current study was to examine the frequency of post-exertional neurocognitive test failure in a sample of high school athletes recovering from concussion that underwent a standardized exertional RTP protocol. This research project used a de-identified medical records review of neurocognitive data …

Coaching And Concussions: Prevention, Education, And Perspective, Colby J. Felts May 2015

Coaching And Concussions: Prevention, Education, And Perspective, Colby J. Felts

Honors Thesis

The large participation of players and coaches in football has made it one of the most popular sports in America. Concussions have specifically gained national attention in football due to frequent, high impact collisions. A concussion injury poses a unique threat in high school football because of the developing adolescent brain and high participation numbers. Additionally, lack of medical personnel to diagnose concussions at the high school level imposes a legal duty on the coaches. The thesis develops a recommended plan of action for directors of Iowa high school football to assist in preserving the future of the sport. A …
