Trouble In The Tails? What We Know About Earnings Nonresponse Thirty Years After Lillard, Smith, And Welch, Christopher R. Bollinger, Barry T. Hirsch, Charles M. Hokayem, James P. Ziliak Sep 2015

Trouble In The Tails? What We Know About Earnings Nonresponse Thirty Years After Lillard, Smith, And Welch, Christopher R. Bollinger, Barry T. Hirsch, Charles M. Hokayem, James P. Ziliak

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Earnings nonresponse in household surveys is widespread, yet there is limited evidence on whether and how nonresponse bias affects measured earnings. This paper examines the patterns and consequences of nonresponse using internal Current Population Survey individual records linked to administrative Social Security Administrative data on earnings for calendar years 2005-2010. Our findings confirm the conjecture by Lillard, Smith, and Welch (1986) that nonresponse across the earnings distribution is U-shaped. Left-tail “strugglers” and right-tail “stars” are least likely to report earnings. Household surveys understate earnings dispersion, reporting too few low and too few extremely high earners. Throughout much of the earnings …

Differential Returns To Education Across Cognitive Ability Levels: Evidence From Cebu Longitudinal Health And Nutrition Survey Data, Tej Gautam Sep 2015

Differential Returns To Education Across Cognitive Ability Levels: Evidence From Cebu Longitudinal Health And Nutrition Survey Data, Tej Gautam

Economics ETDs

This thesis estimates the returns to education in association with childhood cognitive ability for Filipino youth using the Cebu Longituditional Health and Nutrition Survey Data. After reviewing wide range of literature on returns to education and cognitive ability, we find that limited studies have been done concerning the returns to education in conjunction with childhood cognitive ability in the context of developing country. Estimated results using OLS method show that the male returns to education at average cognitive level is 2.5% and for female it is around 8%. In terms of cognitive ability, the marginal effect of schooling decreases as …

Alternative Food Networks And Food Provisioning As A Gendered Act, Rebecca L. Som Castellano Sep 2015

Alternative Food Networks And Food Provisioning As A Gendered Act, Rebecca L. Som Castellano

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Alternative food networks (AFNs) are exemplified by organic, Fair Trade and local foods, and promote forms of food provisioning that are ‘corrective’ to conventional agriculture and food (agrifood) systems. Despite enthusiasm for AFNs, scholars have increasingly interrogated whether inequalities are perpetuated by AFN’s. Reproductions of gender inequality in AFNs, particularly at the level of consumption, has often been left empirically unexamined, however. This is problematic given that women continue to be predominately responsible for food provisioning in the U.S., and that this responsibility can lead to negative physical, psychological and social outcomes. Using quantitative methods and data from the 2012 …

The Political Economy Of Local Fracking Bans, Joshua C. Hall, Christopher Shultz, E. Frank Stephenson Sep 2015

The Political Economy Of Local Fracking Bans, Joshua C. Hall, Christopher Shultz, E. Frank Stephenson

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Concerns about harmful effects arising from the increased use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract underground fuel resources has led to efforts to ban the practice. Many townships in western New York, which lies above the gas-rich Marcellus shale formation, have enacted bans or moratoria. Using spatial econometric techniques, we examine factors related to townships' choice to adopt fracking bans and document the importance of spatial dependence when analyzing fracking bans. We find education levels, the poverty rate, and veterans groups are associated with an increased probability of a township banning or putting a moratorium on fracking.

A Guide to Liberal Arts

As part of earning a bachelor’s degree, all students devote a significant portion of their overall study at RISD to learning across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Additional opportunities to focus one’s study in a concentration, or minor, can augment one’s studio major. This guide serves as a road map to intergrating Liberal Arts studies with studio work.

Ebony And Ivory? Interracial Dating Intentions And Behaviors Of Disadvantaged African American Women In Kentucky, David J. Luke, Carrie B. Oser Sep 2015

Ebony And Ivory? Interracial Dating Intentions And Behaviors Of Disadvantaged African American Women In Kentucky, David J. Luke, Carrie B. Oser

Sociology Faculty Publications

Using data from 595 predominantly disadvantaged African American women in Kentucky, this study examines perceptions about racial/ethnic partner availability, cultural mistrust, and racism as correlates of interracial dating intentions and behaviors with both white and Hispanic men. Participants reported levels of dating intentions and behaviors were significantly higher with whites than Hispanics. The multivariate models indicate less cultural mistrust and believing it is easier to find a man of that racial/ethnic category were associated with higher interracial dating intentions. Women were more likely to have dated a white man if they believed it was easier to find a white man …

Threshold Concepts As Metaphors For The Creative Process: Adapting The Framework For Information Literacy To Studio Art Classes, Larissa K. Garcia, Jessica Labatte Sep 2015

Threshold Concepts As Metaphors For The Creative Process: Adapting The Framework For Information Literacy To Studio Art Classes, Larissa K. Garcia, Jessica Labatte

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

With the revision of the ACRL information literacy standards into a metaliteracy framework, art librarians now have an opportunity to better adapt information literacy instruction for studio art students. By using the new information literacy threshold concepts as metaphors for the creative process, a Northern Illinois University art faculty member and an art librarian collaborated to help students in an advanced studio photography class recognize the importance of research and information literacy skills in the development of their artistic vision and to improve the quality of their work.
