A Rare Family: Exploring Genetic Literacy In An Online Support Group, Heather H. Goltz, Sandra Acosta

Journal of Family Strengths

Healthy People 2020 and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) define health literacy as the “degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” Essential components of health literacy include oral and print literacy, numeracy, and cultural and conceptual knowledge; the latter is influenced by sociodemographic factors and cultural understandings and approaches to concepts such as healthcare. Genetic literacy, a form of health literacy, may be defined as the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to individual understanding of genetic information, and genetic-based health, behavior, technology …

When Birth Control Hurts You: An Essure Investigation, Mia A. Garchitorena

Capstones

Thousands of women report having suffered from injuries and malfunctions related to Essure permanent birth control, including chronic pain, heavy bleeding, migration, or perforation. Many of these women also claim that Essure has caused nickel allergies, hair loss, bloating, rashes, unintended pregnancies, and death. What was promised to be an easy solution has become a life-altering problem.

As patient complaints have increased, experts have gone back and studied the science behind the approval of the Essure device. Their findings are startling: There were flaws with the studies that supported the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the device, the experts …

No Sabía Que Tenía Valor”: Uncovering Latina Mothers’ Multiple Literacies, Julia Lopez-Robertson Dec 2015

No Sabía Que Tenía Valor”: Uncovering Latina Mothers’ Multiple Literacies, Julia Lopez-Robertson

Journal of Family Strengths

Five Latina mothers were engaged in pláticas literarias/literature discussions about Latino children’s literature at their children’s school. The pláticas served as means to build the links from personal experiences to school learning and to help the mothers recognize that their ways of knowing and making meaning of the world-their multiliteracies-are tools from which their children will and do learn. A community cultural wealth [CCW] framework was employed to identify and make visible the significance of these rich contributions and strengths. Basing the pláticas on texts that interested and were relevant to the mothers and providing them a safe space …

Reshaping The Event Horizon‑ Marketing Utopia At Music Festivals, Justin D. Joffe Dec 2015

Reshaping The Event Horizon‑ Marketing Utopia At Music Festivals, Justin D. Joffe

Capstones

Imagine a world where every leisure activity is tracked, recorded, and then analyzed as market research according to your age and gender demographic. Imagine the next phase after smartphone payments, when a chip linking your finances isn’t in your phone, but on your wrist. Imagine a vast field of fellow fun-‐seekers, eating, drinking and dancing in hedonistic, chemically enhanced utopia. Such a scene certainly requires some open-‐ mindedness and improvisation, sure, a willingness to submit oneself to a vulnerable environment of whimsy. Now imagine being subtly exposed to advertisements in such a mindset. It’s no Orwellian controlled dystopia, really. You’ve …

Big Read: Collaborations Between A University And A Community, Chris Birchak, Keri Bell, Rachel Dickson, Vida Robertson, Leigh Van Horn

Journal of Family Strengths

University and community partners write about their collaborations around the reading of Ernest Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying. When an urban university received a National Endowment of the Arts Big Read Grant, they immediately began making connections to existing key initiatives within the university and in the surrounding community. As the partners collaborated within and among the university and community programs and events created for the Big Read they made multiple discoveries regarding the importance of planning together, analyzing the intended audience for each program and event, including multiple ways to access the text, and considering the ways that readers …

Depression With Pain Co Morbidity Effect On Quality Of Life Among Hiv Positive Patients In Uganda: A Cross Sectional Study, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Depression with pain comorbidity (DPC) has not been clearly defined among HIV positive patients in sub-Saharan Africa. It still remains a challenge despite many studies in Africa documenting a high prevalence of pain and depression among people living with HIV/AIDS. Both are associated with a grave impact on the health related outcomes in this pandemic. This study aimed at determining the prevalence, factors associated and effect on quality of life of DPC among HIV positive patients. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, 345 HIV positive patients were enrolled into the study. Using a pre-tested standardised questionnaire the presence of DPC …

Quidditch, Zombies And The Cheese Club: A Case Study In Archiving Web Presence Of Student Groups At New York University, Aleksandr Gelfand

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Student organizations are a unique feature of university life whose records merit preservation. Since the mid-to-late 1990s, these records have been increasingly transitioning from analog format to a digital, web-based platform; a pattern that has only picked-up in the 2000s. This paper looks at a case study of the New York University Archives and its attempt to archive student organizations using the Archive-It service.

Factors Associated With Providers’ Perceptions Of Mental Health Care In Santa Luzia’S Family Health Strategy, Brazil, Angela R. Ghesquiere, Rogerio M. Pinto, Rahbel Rahman, Anya Y. Spector

Publications and Research

Brazil has a unique mental health care system, characterized by universal coverage delivered by interdisciplinary teams both in the community and in specialized centros de atenção psicossocial (CAPS—psychosocial care centers). Provision of patient-centered mental health care is an important principle of Brazilian mental health care, but this topic has not been well-studied. We analyzed data from a cross-sectional survey of 151 community health workers (CHWs), nurses, and physicians in Santa Luzia, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Chi-squares, t-tests and multivariate regression analyses examined differences in socio-demographics, caseload, engagement in evidence-based practices (EBPs), and transdisciplinary collaboration between providers who reported providing high …

Social Enterprise: Finding Identity Between Social And Economic Goals, Roman Batko, Ewa Bogacz-Wojtanowska Dec 2015

Social Enterprise: Finding Identity Between Social And Economic Goals, Roman Batko, Ewa Bogacz-Wojtanowska

European Management Studies

In recent years social enterprises have become the subject of public debate as organizations which can solve many social problems at the local level. Hiring people excluded from the labor market, supporting and activating local economic operators and finally the provision of social services are only some of the most basic expectations directed at social enterprises which are constantly growing thanks to public support. On the other hand, they are also expected to achieve business objectives: to compete on the market, generate surpluses and even maximize profits. This discordant duality of expectations social enterprises are forced to face can be …

The Impact Of Interactive Music Therapy On The Pediatric Oncology Population, Kristin Moon Orrigo

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

It is an unfortunate truth that a child with cancer will experience pain or anxiety during their battle with illness. Advocacy In Action: A Framework For Implementation Of The American Counselors Association Advocacy Competencies On A Local Level, Jeffrey M. Lown

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Despite calls from within the professional field and external forces, counselors have faced ongoing challenges in their efforts to be effective advocates for their clients and themselves. A review of the literature reveals that throughout the history of the profession, prominent figures have called on counselors to assume advocacy roles, and that some initiatives have been successful in fostering lasting change. However, as counselors and their clients’ needs continue to evolve, so too must strategies to address these needs be reevaluated and new initiatives put into place.

In this paper, I have outlined a committee structure and agenda that seeks …
