Reconsidering The Influence Of Islam On Yoruba Cultural Heritage, 1930-1987, Akeem Abiodun Oladiti Jan 2015

Reconsidering The Influence Of Islam On Yoruba Cultural Heritage, 1930-1987, Akeem Abiodun Oladiti

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Previous studies on the activities of Islam have focused on the contribution of the religion to state building (Last, 1967, p. 4 ), the nineteenth century jihad (Smith, 1961, p. 45) and the phenomenal growth of Islam during the colonial period (Gbadamosi, 1978, p. 77). However, no specific attention has been paid to how Islam affected Yoruba culture negatively with specific focus on the area of religion education and language. This study intends to fill this obvious gap in the historiography of influential cultural invasion of Islam from 1930, when colonial political structures allowed the Muslims to maintain a physical …

An Analysis Of The Elementary Art Education Curriculum In Iran / Minoo Aiatollahi Tabar, Tabar Minoo Aiatollahi

Student Works (2010-2019)

The aim of this research was to look at the practice of art education in Iranian elementary schools. This was done by examining the structure of art curriculum and the way it was translated into teaching practice in the schools. This attempt was also to chart out the status of the art curriculum, and to suggest possible alternatives for its improvement. This study involved three forms of examination in the process of evaluation, each of which engaged a different method of data collection. To identify the objectives, approaches, and content of the curriculum, the method of examination involved collecting information …

The Puzzling Plurals In Philemon, Ernie Bursey Jan 2015

The Puzzling Plurals In Philemon, Ernie Bursey

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"this passionate appeal for Philemon to welcome his slave as a brother in the Lord explains Paul’s intention to include the members of the house church in the reading of the letter. If Paul’s efforts are successful in helping Philemon to embrace Onesimus as a brother in the Lord, that welcome will also need to be extended to him by the other brothers and sisters in the Lord in the little house church that met in Philemon’s house."

What's Faith Got To Do With It : Clinicians' Experiences Of Addressing Issues Of Religion And Spirituality In Therapy, Lauren Raymond Jan 2015

What's Faith Got To Do With It : Clinicians' Experiences Of Addressing Issues Of Religion And Spirituality In Therapy, Lauren Raymond

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory, mixed-methods study was conducted to investigate the experiences of clinicians who have both been in personal therapy and practice with clients, to consider the nature of addressing issues pertaining to religion and spirituality, both in the role of client and as clinician. The study sought to explore whether there was any evident correlation between clinicians' experiences in therapy or one's personal spiritual affiliation, or lack thereof, and if and how they approached the discussion of these topics with clients. The research was carried out via an online survey that was distributed to practicing clinicians via direct as well …

What Shadows We Pursue: Death, Democracy, And Disunion In Antebellum America, Joseph M. Rizzo Jan 2015

What Shadows We Pursue: Death, Democracy, And Disunion In Antebellum America, Joseph M. Rizzo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examines the ways Americans registered concerns about antebellum democratic political culture through their mourning of national leaders. A "eulogizing class" consisting of clergymen, politicians, lawyers, and educators was especially prominent in shaping how contemporaries remembered the dead. As a class, the eulogists were conflicted about democracy and partisanship, and conveyed their concerns through the potentially demagogic form of the eulogy---the practice of glorifying the "great man." Through an examination of eulogies, sermons, and newspaper editorials after the deaths of William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, John Calhoun, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster, this dissertation reveals the …

Is The God Of Christian Theology Apathetic?, Kenneth Wayne Gilmore Jan 2015

Is The God Of Christian Theology Apathetic?, Kenneth Wayne Gilmore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The argument of my thesis is that the God of Christian theology has adopted the doctrine of impassibility from Plato and Aristotle. According to this doctrine, God does not experience a variety of psychological states such as anger, sorrow, joy, and love. I will argue that the doctrine of impassibility is not only incongruent with the God of Scripture who is dynamic, redemptive, and loving toward his creation, but that it is antithetical to other core fundamental doctrines in Scripture. I begin by giving an overview of the debate in Part I by surveying the three views on passibility and …

Compassion Development In Higher Education, Roxanne Rashedi, Thomas G. Plante, Erin S. Callister Jan 2015

Compassion Development In Higher Education, Roxanne Rashedi, Thomas G. Plante, Erin S. Callister

Psychology

Many schools of psychology and religious studies intend to promote the cultivation of compassion. Compassion is currently an integral area of study in psychology, religious studies, and higher education, specifically in faith-based higher education. While secular universities in the United States strive to generate disciplinary-based knowledge through scholarship, their ability to promote students' use of the information they are learning to create positive social change has typically lagged. Conscious of the magnitude of today's global issues and dissatisfied with the current disparity between the world's reality and university curricula, scholars have begun to re-imagine the role of higher education in …

The Christian Farmers Federation Of Ontario: Integrating Christian Principles With The Practicality Of Farming, Suzanne M. Armstrong Jan 2015

The Christian Farmers Federation Of Ontario: Integrating Christian Principles With The Practicality Of Farming, Suzanne M. Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis examines the Christian identity and characteristics of the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO), a general farm organization active in the diverse agricultural sector of Ontario, Canada. It highlights the intersection of religion and farming that emerged from interviews and participant observation within this group. The thesis probes what it means for them to be responsible Christian farmers in contemporary agriculture. Christian and secular scholars from three key areas of scholarship—Dutch immigration to Canada, agriculture of the middle or family farming, and Christian stewardship—help to contextualize their responses.

The CFFO was founded as a Dutch neo-Calvinist organization within …

The Reinvention Of The Canadian Armed Forces Chaplaincy And The Limits Of Religious Pluralism, Michael T. Peterson Rev. Dr. Jan 2015

The Reinvention Of The Canadian Armed Forces Chaplaincy And The Limits Of Religious Pluralism, Michael T. Peterson Rev. Dr.

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Reinvention of the Canadian Armed Forces Chaplaincy offers an analysis of how an historically Christian religious organization, one prominently sited within an important Canadian institution, adapted to pluralism. This research is the first to examine Canada’s military chaplaincy since Benham Rennick’s (2011) more broadly focused study of the role of religion in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). My study is the first to focus specifically on the chaplaincy and on the ways in which it has sought to develop and maintain a pluralist identity. I trace the process by which a legacy Christian institution developed a self-image as a …

Multi-Cultural Model Of Relational Personhood And Implementing Philosophy For Children (P4c): A Refusal Of The Illusion Of Individualism In America, Aron J. Burnett Jan 2015

Multi-Cultural Model Of Relational Personhood And Implementing Philosophy For Children (P4c): A Refusal Of The Illusion Of Individualism In America, Aron J. Burnett

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to influence a re-evaluation of self conceptions in America in order to influence an alternative relational understanding of one’s self and others. This thesis begins based on the premise that individualism is a prominent aspect of American societies meaning its member’s understandings of their selves are self-centered, often non-empathetic, and in general more concerned with their own lives than that of others. The first half of this thesis is dedicated analyzing the American situation through an analysis of the sources of individualism and proving that individualism is actually an illusion that individuals falsely believe …

Bodies Bending Boundaries: Religious, Spiritual, And Secular Identities Of Modern Postural Yoga In The Ozarks, Kimberley J. Pingatore Jan 2015

Bodies Bending Boundaries: Religious, Spiritual, And Secular Identities Of Modern Postural Yoga In The Ozarks, Kimberley J. Pingatore

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Modern postural yoga is an amalgamation of practices that continues to defy traditional explanatory models that understand religious, spiritual, and secular to be mutually exclusive categories. In this project, I conduct in-depth interviews with yoga instructors in the Ozarks. In these interviews, I asked my informants to explain how they understand religious, spiritual, and secular. I then asked if and how they would use those words to describe yoga. These interviews revealed that religious, spiritual, and secular are not mutually exclusive, but are instead related, blended, and connected, especially when used to describe yoga. These findings inform my proposed explanatory …

An Aesthetics Of Hospitality: Embodied Religious Experience And Scholarly Engagement In Hindu-Christian Studies, Katherine C. Zubko Jan 2015

An Aesthetics Of Hospitality: Embodied Religious Experience And Scholarly Engagement In Hindu-Christian Studies, Katherine C. Zubko

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

IT is with pleasure that I accepted an invitation to be a respondent to a panel that explores the interstices between aesthetic theory and practice. As an ethnographer who is trained in Sanskrit aesthetics, I am particularly interested in what happens in the spaces of contact and crossover between various embodied religious traditions. For me, these explorations mostly have been located in the study of Bhārata Nāṭyam, a rhythmic dance form through which artists traditionally enact the stories of Hindu gods and their devotees. In contemporary practice, the themes and practitioners of this dance form reflect a much broader spectrum …

Viewpoint: For The Love Of Complexity: Educating Beyond Enthusiasms, Thomas A. Forsthefel Jan 2015

Viewpoint: For The Love Of Complexity: Educating Beyond Enthusiasms, Thomas A. Forsthefel

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I’D like to begin this essay by sharing a brief personal narrative which I trust is illustrative. I was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, but like many students in college ignored or rejected much of it in favor of other worlds of meaning and value. However, late in my undergraduate career, at Georgetown, I found myself in net of emotional and spiritual distress and felt existentially unmoored. That distress was the antecedent and catalyst for a profound re-encounter with the heart of Christian faith, a conversion or, perhaps better, re-conversion, as my faith certainly was meaningful to me as …

The Androgynous Visual Piety Of The Mother And Sri Aurobindo And St. Clare And St. Francis, Patrick Beldio Jan 2015

The Androgynous Visual Piety Of The Mother And Sri Aurobindo And St. Clare And St. Francis, Patrick Beldio

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

When one critically compares the Mother and Sri Aurobindo of Pondicherry, India with St. Clare and St. Francis of Assisi, Italy, one notices that the women are essential to manifesting the work and lives of the men. In fact, these two couples ultimately model a unity of gender, power, love, and work that is quite rare in any time or place. The theme of androgyny, therefore, emerges as an important lens through which to interpret their work together as celibate spiritual partners. As I will demonstrate, the theme of androgyny is seen, not only in their written texts, but equally …

The Asymmetry Of ‘Creation’ And ‘Origination’: Contrasts Within Comparative Theology, Daniel P. Sheridan Jan 2015

The Asymmetry Of ‘Creation’ And ‘Origination’: Contrasts Within Comparative Theology, Daniel P. Sheridan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

THE following essay is a contribution to comparative theology, particularly in its contrastive dimension. For a successful comparative theology, the two theologies or religious perspectives being compared and contrasted must be described accurately and equally in depth. Where Christian theology in its Catholic dimension is one pole of the comparison, it is important to make a distinction between doctrine and theology which I will do below. Issues of translation also immediately arise.
