Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Gardner-Webb University and Isothermal Community College (Spindale, N.C.) announced a partnership that will further ease the transfer process for students who complete degrees in certain programs with coursework at both institutions. Officials for both schools signed agreements to create a seamless degree track for accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, healthcare management, criminal justice, human services, elementary education, nursing and religious studies students who begin their studies at Isothermal (ICC) and finish them in the University’s Degree Completion Program (DCP). Common Threads Among Different Forms Of Charismatic Leadership, Ylva Sandberg, Christopher M. Moreman Aug 2015

Common Threads Among Different Forms Of Charismatic Leadership, Ylva Sandberg, Christopher M. Moreman

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The following paper examines the role of charismatic leadership across religious, political, and business leadership in order to come to terms with charisma, what is often described as an intangible quality. The term itself is derived from a Greek term indicating divine favor, a notion that scholars have increasingly tried to move away from, or ignore, but from a systematic analysis of ways in which charisma manifests, the authors hope to bring the subject into a more defined relief.

Experiential Knowledge Without Experience: A Response To Cray, Mary L. Bobbitt Aug 2015

Experiential Knowledge Without Experience: A Response To Cray, Mary L. Bobbitt

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

This paper responds to Wesley Cray’s article “Omniscience and Worthiness of Worship.” According to Cray, “an omniscient being is one that instantiates all propositional and experiential knowledge,” and no person can have that entire body knowledge. Contrary to Cray, this paper indicates that God’s omniscience implies full propositional knowledge, but only experiential knowledge that is great-making and non-composite. The central argument this paper proposes is that experiential knowledge does not imply that one has had that experience; for God, experiential knowledge may come from a variety of avenues. This article concludes with alternative arguments against Cray’s formulation of God.

Omnipotence, Omnibenevolence, And Evil, Emily Mccarty Aug 2015

Omnipotence, Omnibenevolence, And Evil, Emily Mccarty

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

This paper attempts to defend the attributes of omnipotence and omnibenevolence in light of evil. Possible worlds can be used to show that God perhaps has reasons for permiting evil, and these reasons can reconcile God's attributes with the existence of evil. Using Plantinga's Freewill Defense, free will is seen to be a conduit for moral good, but because of transworld depravity, some evil is present along with this good. Flemming objects to this account and seeks something stronger. Through evil's presence, we learn to identify it and learn to show benevolence to one another in light of its presence. …

The Religious Condition Of German Jewries In The First Half Of The 18th Century. Rural And Urban Communities In Comparison, Avi Siluk Aug 2015

The Religious Condition Of German Jewries In The First Half Of The 18th Century. Rural And Urban Communities In Comparison, Avi Siluk

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

This presentation focuses on Jewish attitudes towards non-Jews in the first half of the 18th century as depicted in the travelling journals of Pietist missionaries. If up to that point, interreligious encounter had been a field of interaction between Jewish and Christian scholars, in the 18th century the missionaries began to engage in conversations on faith with Jews of all social strata, genders, ages and educational backgrounds. Such interactions yielded many different forms of individual and communal Jewish reactions. Examining cases of missionary encounters with the large urban Jewry of Frankfurt (Main) and the smaller, rural kehilah of …

Prometheus & Atlas: An Inquiry Into The Spectral Essence Of Technoscience, Jason Reza Jorjani Aug 2015

Prometheus & Atlas: An Inquiry Into The Spectral Essence Of Technoscience, Jason Reza Jorjani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Technological science has shattered the worldviews of all traditional cultures subjected to it, at times provoking reactionary religious responses that only underscore the traumatic force of this worldwide development. Yet, as I argue, this world-colonizing force is not neutral. The anticipatory projection and world-building characteristic of scientific theorization are grounded in a practical comportment, so that the essence of technology or Craft is ontologically prior to theoretical science. In other words, science is always already Technoscience. Moreover the theoretical concepts and methodologies involved in predictive calculation and in crafting frameworks that model and mold the world are derived from pre-conceptual …

Ancient Magic And Modern Accessories: Developments In The Omamori Phenomenon, Eric Teixeira Mendes Aug 2015

Ancient Magic And Modern Accessories: Developments In The Omamori Phenomenon, Eric Teixeira Mendes

Masters Theses

This thesis offers an examination of modern Japanese amulets, called omamori, distributed by Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines throughout Japan. As amulets, these objects are meant to be carried by a person at all times in which they wish to receive the benefits that an omamori is said to offer. In modern times, in addition to being a religious object, these amulets have become accessories for cell-phones, bags, purses, and automobiles. Said to protect people from accidents, disease, loneliness, failure, computer viruses, among many other things, these objects are one of the few material aspects of religion that are a …

Women, Higher Education, And The Labor Market: A Cross-Cultural Understanding Of The Impact Of Religion, Allison Fife Hale Aug 2015

Women, Higher Education, And The Labor Market: A Cross-Cultural Understanding Of The Impact Of Religion, Allison Fife Hale

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

How do deeply-held cultural perspectives shape the desire and ability of women to pursue higher education and or careers? More specifically, how do predominant religious and cultural perspectives on the family, the role of women, and the role of education influence a woman's decision to obtain higher education and her perceived ability or desire to seek full-time employment upon graduation? To answer these questions, this research utilized a cross-cultural survey instrument to compare and contrast the perceptions of female, undergraduate students in one predominantly Muslim/Middle Eastern society -- Dubai, U.A.E -- and one predominantly Mormon/Western society -- Utah, U.S.A. We …

Jacqueline Carter, Shirley Culberson Barrett, And Wilmer Amina Carter, Wilmer Amina Carter Foundation

Bridges Digital Archive: Audio and Video Recordings

Ratibu Jacocks interviews three people regarding their extensive family history. The first is his wife Wilmer Amina Carter, her cousin Jacqueline Carter, and a relative by the name of Shirley Culberson Barrett. Through enthusiastic and often overlapping conversations, the three women discuss their family history. Prominently through the use of a family photo album and recollections, the interviewees discuss church, family lineage, memories of those passed, and the issues with organizing contemporary family reunions. With faith, Wilmer and Jacqueline discuss the church revival events, food, and being saved through baptisms. They also discuss the family tree and how Wilmer’s mother …

Paramedicine And Social Work: Case Studies In Authentic Student Recruitment, Nathalie Collins, Lynelle Watts, Renee Strauss, David Hodgson Jul 2015

Paramedicine And Social Work: Case Studies In Authentic Student Recruitment, Nathalie Collins, Lynelle Watts, Renee Strauss, David Hodgson

eCULTURE

Selling the course experience to future students has been corporatised across the Higher Education sector. At many universities marketing and sales specialists, such as ECU’s Student Recruitment Team, rather than academic staff, field prospective student enquiries. Representing courses authentically is crucial to matching future students with an appropriate course experience and career, as well is managing future students’ expectations. A challenge for academics is communicating the course/career experience to university sales agents (recruiters). A challenge for recruiters is conveying an authentic course experience to future students when they have not taken a course themselves. This paper selects two ECU courses, …

Redrafting Ohio's Advance Directive Laws, Susan R. Martyn, James E. Reagan, Brendan Minogue, Debra L. Dippel, Maria R. Schimer, Robert Taraszewski

Akron Law Review

The Bioethics Network of Ohio (BENO) held its second annual conference on June 12, 1992 at Ohio Dominican College, Columbus, Ohio. Attendees recommended that a Task Force' review Ohio's Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPAHC) and Modified Uniform Rights for the Terminally Ill (MURTIA) laws and suggest changes that would retain the basic structure of these provisions but also simplify and clarify their meaning. The Task Force completed a draft in six months and circulated it to approximately 450 individual and institutional BENO members. About one hundred members responded and this article incorporates most of their comments.
