Is Slumdog Millionaire A Retelling Of The Ramayana?, William L. Blizek, Michele M. Desmarais

Journal of Religion & Film

Is a banner with a picture of Rama and Sita on it and the word, “Ramayana,” the only link between the film Slumdog Millionaire and the great Hindu epic? In this paper we explore elements in the film that correspond to elements in theRamayana. There is no one-to-one correlation, and some relationships between the two are, in fact, mirror images. However, there are enough correlations and influences to suggest that the film might be considered a retelling of theRamayana. We also acknowledge though that there are also features of the film that some would …

Art History 373: The West Encounters The Rest, Janice Mann, Emily Sherwood Oct 2015

Art History 373: The West Encounters The Rest, Janice Mann, Emily Sherwood

Bucknell Digital Scholarship Collection

This class examined what happens to the visual arts when European cultures encounter those in other parts of the globe. Moving chronologically from the 15th to the early 20th century, ARTH373 explored how the visual arts develop in response to encounters between cultures with different cultural identities and artistic traditions. Throughout the semester, Professor Mann focused on facilitating collaborative learning and co-inquiry through activity-centered digital projects. Students collaborated on a range of digital projects over the course of the semester. Beyond regularly contributing to a course blog, students developed concepts for curating works of art from the Samek. They created …

Ganga: River Health And Livelihood: An Exploration In The Relationship Of Women’S Health And Water In The Garhwal Region, Caroline Lutkewitte Oct 2015

Ganga: River Health And Livelihood: An Exploration In The Relationship Of Women’S Health And Water In The Garhwal Region, Caroline Lutkewitte

India: Public Health, Policy Advocacy, and Community

Overall, the intention of this study is to provide a bases for understanding how the livelihood of Himalayan women affects the health of the Ganga and vice versa. An apparent paradox between the destruction caused by development and one’s own spiritual and religious fulfillment may explain the diminishing quality of the Ganga. Through interviews with Garhwali women and observations of lifestyles along the Ganga, a concept of women’s interaction with water was determined. These perceptions and uses of water were compared to perspectives on degradation of the river. Pollution and water diversion projects serve as two of the largest struggles …

Thomas Hooker, Martin Luther, And The Terror At The Edge Of Protestant Faith, Baird L. Tipson Oct 2015

Thomas Hooker, Martin Luther, And The Terror At The Edge Of Protestant Faith, Baird L. Tipson

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Unlike their Roman Catholic counterparts, early Protestants insisted that individual Christians could be certain that they personally enjoyed God’s favor and would be saved. Their faith in Christ’s redeeming work would give them “assurance of salvation,” and their ministers insisted that every Christian ought to feel that assurance. This article argues that Protestant assurance did not – and could not – banish believers’ anxiety that God’s saving promises had never been meant for them. “Behind” the God who promised salvation lurked a “hidden God” who had decided the ultimate fate of every individual before the beginning of time. Even the …

Scribal Hermeneutics And The Twelve Gates Of Ludlul Bēl Nēmeqi, Alan Lenzi Oct 2015

Scribal Hermeneutics And The Twelve Gates Of Ludlul Bēl Nēmeqi, Alan Lenzi

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

In the final tablet of Ludlul bēl nēmeqi lines 42–53 Šubši-mešrê-Šakkan passes through twelve gates in or near the precincts of Marduk's Esagila in Babylon. As the protagonist passes through these twelve gates he is symbolically rehabilitated and reintegrated into society, marking the end of his trials and the beginning of his Marduk-renewed life. One gate is named in each of the twelve lines. At each gate, identified in the first half of the line, the protagonist is granted something positive, which is described in the second half of the line. In the present study I argue that the author …

Walking Together: Living Fearlessly, Loving Boldy, Anna M. Malone

Student Publications

In this paper, I give an account of my capstone for the Religious Studies major. I tell about the research project-turned-applied-learning, and how my research as a Mellon Summer Scholar ’15 led me to start a prison ministry between Gettysburg students and the Adams County Adult Correctional Complex. I reflect on what I have done, how God has worked, and what I have learned. This is far from a typical research paper; then again, this was far from a typical research project.
