Efficiency Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In Liberia: The Case Of Monrovia, Wellington J. Barchue, Jehovaness Aikaeli
Efficiency Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In Liberia: The Case Of Monrovia, Wellington J. Barchue, Jehovaness Aikaeli
Business Management Review
The study looks into the efficiency status of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Monrovia, Liberia. Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) techniques are employed to analyse primary data to investigate the technical efficiency of the selected SMEs. Estimation results show that SMEs in Monrovia are generally inefficient. The mean inefficiency is 21 percent, and around 11 percent of the SMEs interviewed have inefficiency of over 30 percent. Despite the meagre financial resources at the disposal of the SMEs in Monrovia, there is an apparent underutilisation that needs to be addressed. Moreover, the study used a Two-Limit Tobit model to identify factors …

Success And Usefulness Of Business Development Services In Tanzania ' S Smes Market, Omari Khalifa Mbura, Merezia Wilson Bambaganya
Business Management Review
The study examined the success and usefulness of successful provision of useful Business Development Services (BDS) in Tanzania ' s SME market. Specifically, the study examined the extent to which the demand side and supply side factors as well as government support influence the successful provision of BDS. A survey methodology was deployed in the conduct of this study. Using random sampling, 100 respondents were selected to take part in a questionnaire survey: 50 questionnaires were administered with Business Development Services Providers (BDSPs) and 50 questionnaires with Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The selected enumeration areas (EAs) were all based …
Citizen Havel And The Construction Of Czech Presidentiality, Timothy Barney
Citizen Havel And The Construction Of Czech Presidentiality, Timothy Barney
Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Václav Havel had two eventful terms as the first democratic president of the Czech Republic. The documentary Citizen Havel is one rhetorical artifact that captures the way a new democracy and its attendant executive power is constructed consciously in real time in a political culture where such a tradition has largely not existed. Culled from ten years of fly-on-the-wall-style footage, Citizen Havel captures the tensions between the constitutional expectations of the Czech presidency and Havel's own extraconstitutional interpretations of executive power. Ultimately, this essay argues that Citizen Havel is one influential representation of how Czech “presidentiality” during the post-communist transition …

Leisure Studies And Christian Scholarship: Two Solitudes?, Paul Heintzman
Leisure Studies And Christian Scholarship: Two Solitudes?, Paul Heintzman
Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
This paper examines the interrelationships between scholarly Christian writings on leisure and leisure studies literature. As an academic field of study leisure studies is a fairly recent development, however throughout Christian history leisure has been considered by Christians such as Augustine, Aquinas, Luther and Calvin. A number of observations can be made from a review of these two bodies of literature. First, although numerous books have been written in recent decades by Christian scholars on the subject of leisure, very few of these scholars have been leisure studies scholars, and in most cases, these Christian writings have not made reference …

Engaging Children And Families In Culturally Relevant Literacies, Patricia Piña, Kindel T. Nash, Alicia Boardman, Bilal Polson, Leah Panther
Journal of Family Strengths
This article offers theoretical and practical strategies for engaging families, communities, and young children in culturally relevant and responsive early literacies. The authors highlight findings from data collected in their own classrooms and with families and communities for the Professional Dyads in Culturally Relevant (PDCRT) teaching project,[1] a collaborative research partnership (2013-2015) between teacher educator-teacher dads [2] aimed at generating, investigating, and documenting culturally relevant/responsive practices for early childhood contexts.
[1]The PDCRT was initiated by Affirmative Action Committee of the Early Childhood Education Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Big Read: Collaborations Between A University And A Community, Chris Birchak, Keri Bell, Rachel Dickson, Vida Robertson, Leigh Van Horn
Journal of Family Strengths
University and community partners write about their collaborations around the reading of Ernest Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying. When an urban university received a National Endowment of the Arts Big Read Grant, they immediately began making connections to existing key initiatives within the university and in the surrounding community. As the partners collaborated within and among the university and community programs and events created for the Big Read they made multiple discoveries regarding the importance of planning together, analyzing the intended audience for each program and event, including multiple ways to access the text, and considering the ways that readers …

Previously, transplantation of ovaries from young, cycling mice into old, postreproductive-age mice increased life span and decreased cardiomyopathy at death. We anticipated that the same factors that increased life span and decreased cardiomyopathy could also influence the progression of orthopedic disease. At 11 months of age, prepubertally ovariectomized and ovary-intact mice (including reproductively cycling and acyclic mice) received new 60-day-old ovaries. At death, epiphyseal bone in the proximal tibia and the distal femur and mid-shaft tibial and femoral diaphyseal bone was analyzed with micro-computed tomography. For qualitative analysis of osteophytosis, we also included mineralized connective tissue within the stifle joint. …

Quantifying The Adaptive Cycle, David G. Angeler, Craig R. Allen, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Lance H. Gunderson, Olle Hjerne, Monika Winder
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The adaptive cycle was proposed as a conceptual model to portray patterns of change in complex systems. Despite the model having potential for elucidating change across systems, it has been used mainly as a metaphor, describing system dynamics qualitatively. We use a quantitative approach for testing premises (reorganisation, conservatism, adaptation) in the adaptive cycle, using Baltic Sea phytoplankton communities as an example of such complex system dynamics. Phytoplankton organizes in recurring spring and summer blooms, a well-established paradigm in planktology and succession theory, with characteristic temporal trajectories during blooms that may be consistent with adaptive cycle phases. We used long-term …

When reviewing for Journalism & Mass Communication Educator (JMCE), I try to look at the text with the following questions in mind: “Do I see a pedagogical use for this text? Could I use this in one of my classes?” Initially, with Journalism and Memorialization, the answer was “no.” As I read further, however, that answer began to shift. It is that shift I wish to focus on here.

The Stationary Phase Method For Real Analytic Geometry, Domenico Napoletani, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We prove that the existence of isolated solutions of systems of equations of analytical functions on compact real domains in Rp, is equivalent to the convergence of the phase of a suitable complex valued integral I(h) for h→∞. As an application, we then use this result to prove that the problem of establishing the irrationality of the value of an analytic function F(x) at a point x0 can be rephrased in terms of a similar phase convergence.
Concurrent Kleene Algebra With Tests And Branching Automata, Peter Jipsen, M. Andrew Moshier
Concurrent Kleene Algebra With Tests And Branching Automata, Peter Jipsen, M. Andrew Moshier
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We introduce concurrent Kleene algebra with tests (CKAT) as a combination of Kleene algebra with tests (KAT) of Kozen and Smith with concurrent Kleene algebras (CKA), introduced by Hoare, Möller, Struth and Wehrman. CKAT provides a relatively simple algebraic model for reasoning about semantics of concurrent programs. We generalize guarded strings to guarded series-parallel strings , or gsp-strings, to give a concrete language model for CKAT. Combining nondeterministic guarded automata of Kozen with branching automata of Lodaya and Weil one obtains a model for processing gsp-strings in parallel. To ensure that the model satisfies the weak exchange law (x‖y)(z‖w)≤(xz)‖(yw) of …

Generation Y On The E-Commerce Market. Comparison Between Polish And South Korean Young Consumers’ Behaviour, Aleksandra Korzeniowska
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
This article investigates the problem of Polish and South Korean Millennials’ consumer behaviour on the e-commerce market. There were arguments about whether Generation Y members as Digital Natives are rather a coherent or diversified cohort of consumers. They were raised in the culturally diversified world, but the trend of globalization and the use of the Internet may in fluence their consumer behaviour in a similar way. The aim of this paper is to reveal particular patterns crucial to understanding their way of making an online purchase. An online survey was conducted among Polish and South Korean respondents from Generation Y …

Entropyexplorer: An R Package For Computing And Comparing Differential Shannon Entropy, Kai Wang, Charles A. Philips, Arnold M. Saxton, Michael A. Langston
Computing: Faculty Publications
Background: Differential Shannon entropy (DSE) and differential coefficient of variation (DCV) are effective metrics for the study of gene expression data. They can serve to augment differential expression (DE), and be applied in numerous settings whenever one seeks to measure differences in variability rather than mere differences in magnitude. A general purpose, easily accessible tool for DSE and DCV would help make these two metrics available to data scientists. Automated p value computations would additionally be useful, and are often easier to interpret than raw test statistic values alone.
Results: EntropyExplorer is an R package for calculating DSE, DCV and …

A Conceptual Model For Driving Green Purchase Among Indian Consumers, Prashant Trivedi
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
Marketing is considered as responsible for increasing consumerism and overuse of limited resources. An endeavour to promote sustainable consumption is the need of the hour and an answer to growing concerns towards it is required. Marketing can be used as a tool to promote sustainability and increase responsible consumption. Many products which have energy saving potential can be successfully promoted through marketing activities. Increasingly, consumers are becoming aware about the issue and through constant marketing efforts green products and sustainable consumption can be taken to a high level. Contextual factors like value for money, features and selling point communication can …

Background: Depression with pain comorbidity (DPC) has not been clearly defined among HIV positive patients in sub-Saharan Africa. It still remains a challenge despite many studies in Africa documenting a high prevalence of pain and depression among people living with HIV/AIDS. Both are associated with a grave impact on the health related outcomes in this pandemic. This study aimed at determining the prevalence, factors associated and effect on quality of life of DPC among HIV positive patients. Methods: In a cross-sectional survey, 345 HIV positive patients were enrolled into the study. Using a pre-tested standardised questionnaire the presence of DPC …
