Power To Intercept, Monitor And Surveil: Cybersurveillance And Democracy In India, P Arun
Power To Intercept, Monitor And Surveil: Cybersurveillance And Democracy In India, P Arun
National Law School Journal
The aftermath of major terror attacks in the twenty-first century unleashed serious concerns and unprecedented challenges to security across the globe. Similar to several other countries, India's response to challenges introduced several innovations in the legal and technological realm, which led to the emergence of data-driven governance through surveillance i.e. , cybersurveillance. A greater thrust towards data -driven governance led to unrelenting expansion and frenetic search for alibis to control ever larger areas of society and people. It is a significant metamorphosis in the nature of surveillance at this juncture where there is greater thrust towards normalisation of exceptional power …

The Facility Location Problem, Meghan E. Csoke
The Facility Location Problem, Meghan E. Csoke
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze the location of an emergency facility location within a town based on given information from the village and to use the results to determine the optimal location for an emergency facility. A model of the problem was developed using a spreadsheet and computer program to record and analyze the optimal response time based on different locations of emergency facilities. Assumptions were made to create situations easily computed through spreadsheet and computer programs. Once calculated, information was used to create a framework of demand density across a gridded map. Once the computer program …

Use Of Roadway Attributes In Hot Spot Identification And Analysis, David R. Bassett
Use Of Roadway Attributes In Hot Spot Identification And Analysis, David R. Bassett
Theses and Dissertations
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic and Safety Division continues to advance the safety of roadway sections throughout the state. In an effort to aid UDOT in meeting their goal, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU) has worked with the Statistics Department in developing analysis tools for safety. The most recent of these tools has been the development of a hierarchical Bayesian Poisson Mixture Model (PMM) of traffic crashes known as the Utah Crash Prediction Model (UCPM), a hierarchical Bayesian Binomial statistical model known as the Utah Crash Severity Model (UCSM), and a …

See And Hear James "Catfish" Cole: Identity, Manhood, And The North Carolina Ku Klux Klan, 1952-1967, John Scholl Hinton
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the influence of Reverend James "Catfish" Cole on the North Carolina Ku Klux Klan (KKK). By focusing on the white supremacy movement, it shows efforts made by white North Carolinians who opposed the Civil Rights Movement. Cole's contributions to the white supremacy movement are unique. As an evangelist and Grand Wizard of the North Carolina Knights of the KKK, Cole believed he was ordained by God through what he called his "divine commission." His divine commission led him to believe he was a prophet leading whites in a fight against civil rights.
A study of Cole's time …
Health And Safety Considerations Associated With Sodium Debris Bed Experimental Nuclear Assembly Dismantlement, Alan Carvo
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
As the end of World War II approached, scientists who developed the processes to generate nuclear material for war-time use grew interested in applying those technologies to the generation of power for cities across the United States. Concerns about the availability of natural uranium led to the development of self-fueling fast neutron breeder reactors. In order to produce plutonium at a rate greater than the consumption of uranium during a nuclear chain reaction, high-energy “fast” neutrons are required. Fast neutron reactors utilize low melting-point metals, like sodium, to provide cooling.
After the earliest reactors experienced trouble providing adequate cooling during …
Civil Disabilities In An Era Of Diminishing Privacy: A Disability Approach For The Use Of Criminal Records In Hiring, Andrew Elmore
Civil Disabilities In An Era Of Diminishing Privacy: A Disability Approach For The Use Of Criminal Records In Hiring, Andrew Elmore
Faculty Scholarship
An evaluation of normative and legal frameworks to encourage the employment of people with criminal convictions is in order. While current approaches are likely to eliminate overbroad initial hiring screens, there remains the unfinished project of reintegrating persons with criminal convictions into the workforce. For this, policy tools are needed to discourage the misuse of irrelevant criminal convictions and to encourage a contextualized evaluation of criminal convictions and the fair consideration of applicants’ qualifications separate from them.
This Article proposes a disability normative and legal framework as a useful approach to guide this analysis. Disability laws first consider the privacy …

The Science And Statistics Behind Spanking Suggest That Laws Allowing Corporal Punishment Are In The Best Interests Of The Child, Jason M. Fuller
The Science And Statistics Behind Spanking Suggest That Laws Allowing Corporal Punishment Are In The Best Interests Of The Child, Jason M. Fuller
Akron Law Review
Were such a killing to occur in the U.S., the popular reaction would have been, “How can we prevent this from happening again?” In Sweden, however, youth violence and aggression has gotten so out-of control that the reaction was, “Shoot another [one].” Sadly, many policymakers fail to realize how Swedish laws have contributed to growing youth violence, and consequently, to public resentment of Swedish youths.
In 1979, Sweden started an international trend by becoming the first country to ban spanking. Since then, twenty-three more countries have outlawed it. The European Committee of Social Rights currently is urging all forty-five of …
Rationalizing The Constitution: The Military Commissions Act And The Duboius Legacy Of Ex Parte Quirin, Chad Deveaux
Rationalizing The Constitution: The Military Commissions Act And The Duboius Legacy Of Ex Parte Quirin, Chad Deveaux
Akron Law Review
Alexander Hamilton famously characterized the Judiciary as the “least dangerous” branch. It “has no influence over either the sword or the purse” and thus “must ultimately depend upon the aid of the executive arm even for the efficacy of its judgments.” But this perceived safeguard has sometimes proven to be the institution’s undoing. Faced with the prospect of appearing impotent, the Supreme Court has, on occasion, played the role of doctrinal apologist. The Court has bent seemingly immutable constitutional prerogatives to sanction Executive action when a contrary ruling would likely go unheeded.
