The Importance Of Ritual In Helping Heal Veterans Who Suffer With Ptsd/Moral Injury: A Chaplain’S Role In The Body Of The Church, Matthew Prince

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

As an active duty Navy chaplain, endorsed by the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, I wondered where did these purification rites from these societies have their roots. Had some of their ideas come from the purification rituals in the Pentateuch? Did the early or medieval church have any purification rites? Had the early church fathers written concerning this issue?

Economically Relevant Traits And Selection Indices, Matt L. Spangler Nov 2015

Economically Relevant Traits And Selection Indices, Matt L. Spangler

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Sire selection should focus on that which is economical. This requires a true accounting of the traits that generate revenue or incur a cost within a specific beef cattle enterprise. Once the drivers of profit have been identified, sire selection should focus on the suite of traits that impact profitability. The use of bio-economic selection indices can dramatically reduce the complexity of multiple trait selection and aid in sire selection towards increased profitability. It is critical to use selection indices that match the intended production system. Using a terminal index in an enterprise that retains replacement heifers would not be …

What's The Value Of Low-Stress Stockmanship From A Feed Yard's Perspective?, Anne Burkholder

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Why Acclimate?

  • Teach cattle to recognize that the home pen is where they want to be.
  • Teach cattle to walk in straight lines -‐-‐ exit the home pen – travel with confidence down the alleyway and into the corral – walk past a handler with some element of trust.
  • Cattle gravitate toward the feed bunk and water tank more quickly; thereby going on feed more smoothly.
  • Enables safer, more effective handler –animal interactions which increases safety at the feed yard.
  • Comfortable Cattle = More efficient feed conversion and higher quality beef.
  • Acclimated cattle are easier to handle and make the …

Addressing Campus Sexual Assault Awareness Through Service Learning, Eileen J. Coussens

VA Engage Journal

ABSTRACT

This essay focuses on a Service Learning project which a group of students from my Advanced Composition class at Old Dominion University participated in regarding sexual assault awareness on college campuses. Throughout our class, we learned what Service Learning projects consist of and used what we learned to form our own proposals for projects that would reach from the classroom to the surrounding area to address community issues. We have written about our experiences with this Service Learning project in a reflective essay which acts as our final exam. In doing this, we also have attained our course goals …

Academic Practices To Gain And Maintain Student-Teacher Connectedness And Classroom Behavioral Management, Related To Educator Demographics, Leslie Threadgill

Dissertations

Connectedness and classroom management has been defined as the ability to relate to students and keep order and maintain successful relationships with individuals. This qualitative study utilized surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and observations to examine the best practices implemented by educators to develop and maintain connections with students based upon the age, gender, ethnicity, and experience of a studied educator. The research investigated how classroom management positively and/or negatively affected the educator, students, and classroom environment, with respect to connectedness, as evidenced by behaviors such as off-task, aggressive, and non-academically productive behaviors. The research also examined how a teacher’s intonation and …

The Occupational Benefits Of Children Farming, Ellie Edrissi

OCCUPATION: A Medium of Inquiry about Health through Occupation

This paper analyses the positive outcomes of youth responsibilities, routines, autonomy, youth programs and scholarships, cultural identity, educational and life experiences through the occupation of farming during seasonal and/or after school hours. The multidimensional context of children willingly working in the agricultural industry allows positive psychological, economical, and cultural experiences while building a stronger family unity. The occupation of farming allows youth participation with the environment, social skills, inter-generational transfer of skills, and increased confidence for future aspirations as they mature to adulthood.

How Patients Think: Assessing Clinician Competence In University Settings, Jennifer Allen

Spectrum

The past academic year of 2014–2015 I completed an independent research study to observe how patients assess clinician competence within a university setting. The goal of the research was twofold: first, to look at patient-clinician interactions from the patient’s perspective, and second to see if a patient’s past experiences with clinicians have any effect on their current assessment of clinician competence. The study focused on college students at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), Durham campus. In the following paragraphs, I provide a summary of the research project, methodology, and outcomes.

Hiv Knowledge Among Muslim University Women, Subha Singh Nov 2015

Hiv Knowledge Among Muslim University Women, Subha Singh

Spectrum

While studies have shown that HIV infections are increasing in Muslim countries, especially among the young population (Abu-Moghli et al. 2010), the prevalence of HIV infection among young Muslims in the United States is poorly understood. The United States has a Muslim population of 6.67 million and it is increasing every year. However, the CDC and other public health organizations do not include religious identification as a social category for which to gather statistics on risk behaviors and infection rates. Instead, health organizations disaggregate data on infection rates according to categories such as race, ethnicity, sex, social economic status, and …

The Concept Of Missing Incidents In Persons With Dementia, Meredeth Rowe, Amy M. Houston, Victor A. Molinari, Tatjana Bulat, Mary E. Bowen, Heather Spring, Sandra Mutolo, Barbara Mckenzie

Nursing Faculty Publications

Behavioral symptoms of dementia often present the greatest challenge for informal caregivers. One behavior, that is a constant concern for caregivers, is the person with dementia leaving a designated area such that their whereabouts become unknown to the caregiver or a missing incident. Based on an extensive literature review and published findings of their own research, members of the International Consortium on Wandering and Missing Incidents constructed a preliminary missing incidents model. Examining the evidence base, specific factors within each category of the model were further described, reviewed and modified until consensus was reached regarding the final model. The model …

Promoting Public Health In The Context Of The “Obesity Epidemic”: False Starts And Promising New Directions, T. Mann, A. J. Tomiyama, Andrew Ward

Psychology Faculty Works

In the battle to combat obesity rates in the United States, several misconceptions have dominated policy initiatives. We address those misconceptions, including the notion that restrictive diets lead to long-term weight loss, that stigmatizing obesity is an effective strategy for promoting weight reduction, and that weight and physical health should be considered synonymous with one another. In offering correctives to each of these points, we draw on psychological science to suggest new policies that could be enacted at both the local and national levels. Instead of policies that rely solely on individual willpower, which is susceptible to failure, we recommend …
