Self-Care Project For Faculty And Staff Of Future Health Care Professionals: Case Report, Nancy Macrae, Kelley Strout Nov 2015

Self-Care Project For Faculty And Staff Of Future Health Care Professionals: Case Report, Nancy Macrae, Kelley Strout

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Self-care among health care providers is an important component of their ability to provide quality health care to patients. Health care institutions have programs in place for students that emphasize health and wellness, but few programs are available for faculty and staff. To address this gap and facilitate modeling health and wellness strategies for students, a New England institution that educates health care practitioners began a pilot self-care project for faculty and staff. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. The template used for this project could be used as a stepping-stone for future wellness self-care program in higher education …

The United States Could Use A Therapist General, Barry Mauer Nov 2015

The United States Could Use A Therapist General, Barry Mauer

UCF Forum

Lately I have been imagining the creation of a new office in the executive branch: a Therapist General to advise the president and the nation about psychological problems affecting American citizens, groups and institutions. The person assuming this role could issue an annual report about the state of the nation’s mental health, investigate and report on the likely psychological costs and benefits of proposed laws, and issue recommendations for therapies to improve the nation’s psychological health.

Influence Of Sports Drink Taste Preference On Consumption In Adult Recreational Soccer Players, Kiarash Molavi Nov 2015

Influence Of Sports Drink Taste Preference On Consumption In Adult Recreational Soccer Players, Kiarash Molavi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Sports drinks provide nutrients that improve athletic performance. This study investigated whether a preference in taste leads to an increased consumption of a sports drink prior to and after an endurance event in athletes. Male amateur soccer players (n=16) first participated in a blind sensory evaluation to determine their taste preference for two (designated as Drink A and Drink B) similarly flavored sports drinks. Subjects were divided into two groups based on their taste preference for either drink. They then participated in 9 soccer matches and were presented with either Drink A, Drink B, or water (3 trials each) before …

Barriers To Hiv Testing Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men (Msm): Experiences From Clark County, Nevada, Jennifer R. Pharr, Nancy L. Lough, Echezona E. Ezeanolue

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Clark County, Nevada had a 52% increase in newly diagnosed HIV infections in young people age 13-24 with 83% of the new diagnoses in this age group being men who have sex with men (MSM). HIV testing and counseling is critical for HIV prevention, care and treatment, yet young people are the least likely to seek HIV testing. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators to HIV testing experienced by young MSM in Clark County, Nevada. We conducted a qualitative focus group discussion to identify barriers and facilitators to HIV testing among eleven young MSM in …

Adolescent Intermittent Alcohol Exposure: Deficits In Object Recognition Memory And Forebrain Cholinergic Markers, H. Scott Swartzwelder, Shawn K. Acheson, Kelsey M. Miller, Hannah G. Sexton, Wen Liu, Fulton T. Crews, Mary-Louise Risher Nov 2015

Adolescent Intermittent Alcohol Exposure: Deficits In Object Recognition Memory And Forebrain Cholinergic Markers, H. Scott Swartzwelder, Shawn K. Acheson, Kelsey M. Miller, Hannah G. Sexton, Wen Liu, Fulton T. Crews, Mary-Louise Risher

Biomedical Sciences

The long-term effects of intermittent ethanol exposure during adolescence (AIE) are of intensive interest and investigation. The effects of AIE on learning and memory and the neural functions that drive them are of particular interest as clinical findings suggest enduring deficits in those cognitive domains in humans after ethanol abuse during adolescence. Although studies of such deficits after AIE hold much promise for identifying mechanisms and therapeutic interventions, the findings are sparse and inconclusive. The present results identify a specific deficit in memory function after AIE and establish a possible neural mechanism of that deficit that may be of translational …

Effect Of Empathy On Death Penalty Support In Relation To The Racial Divide And Gender Gap, Brian Godcharles Nov 2015

Effect Of Empathy On Death Penalty Support In Relation To The Racial Divide And Gender Gap, Brian Godcharles

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to examine previous empirical literature indicating that death penalty support contains a divide among Blacks and Whites and a gap among males and females. Previous literature has indicated that there has been a persistent racial divide and gender gap in death penalty support that has spanned over 60 years of research. Attempts to attenuate these divides have failed to fully explain why Whites are more likely than Blacks to support the death penalty and men are more likely than women to support the death penalty. This study proposes the use of empathy to control for these divides …

Basal Salivary Oxytocin And Skin To Skin Contact Among Lactating Mothers Of Premature Infants, Jessica Marie Gordon Nov 2015

Basal Salivary Oxytocin And Skin To Skin Contact Among Lactating Mothers Of Premature Infants, Jessica Marie Gordon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research explored mechanisms of human milk (HM) expulsion by describing the effects of skin to skin contact (SSC) on maternal basal oxytocin (OT) secretion among 20 premature mothers with hospitalized premature infants. This one-group, repeated measures design consisted of: 1) daily SSC with covariant data via self-report diary and 2) maternal salivary OT with and without SSC at 4 time points were collected over a 7 day time frame. Results indicate that mean levels of basal OT increase over time (M 234 pg/ml, SD 108 pg/ml time point 1; M 257 pg/ml, SD 125 pg/ml time point 3). …

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land Nov 2015

Adolescent Females With High-Functioning Asd: Self And Mothers’ Perspectives Of Their School And Social Experiences, Lindsey Land

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently 1 in 68 (Centers for Disease Control, 2015) and research in this area is growing, high-functioning individuals on the spectrum are often overlooked. This is because of their relatively milder symptoms. The recent collapse of Asperger Syndrome (AS) with autism in the most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5; APA, 2013) also has obscured the differences that may exist between those with higher vs. lower levels of functioning. Among youth with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD), girls are a particularly understudied and potentially vulnerable group. Previous research …

Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa Nov 2015

Parent Predictors Of Social-Emotional Strengths In Kindergartners, Kayla Nicole Larosa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Strengths-based assessment is providing an alternative to the typical way that psychologists approach mental health in the literature. Social-emotional strengths are multidimensional, positive indicators of mental health that include Social Competence, Self-Regulation, Empathy, and Responsibility. Limited research has been conducted to examine the potential connection between parental involvement in children’s education, specifically in the areas of supporting a child’s learning at home, parental involvement within educational settings, and parenting practices (discipline, Monitoring, use of Praise and Incentives) in connection with social-emotional strengths. With an emphasis on prevention of mental health problems, parents are an important and potentially untapped resource for …

Priming, Rap News And Public Diplomacy: Reporting On An Ngo-Led Media Initiative In Uganda, Lee Shaker, Paul Falzone Nov 2015

Priming, Rap News And Public Diplomacy: Reporting On An Ngo-Led Media Initiative In Uganda, Lee Shaker, Paul Falzone

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mediated public diplomacy campaigns are proliferating around the world. Governments are joined by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), terrorists, and others that seek to effect change on the international stage by speaking directly to global populations. As these initiatives spread, they also use new and creative communication tactics. This study contributes to the evolving public diplomacy literature in two key ways. First, it explores the design and effects of an NGO-led intervention that employs a novel message format—rap news—in Uganda. Second, it reports on the integration of priming theory and entertainment-education strategies into this intervention and its evaluation. Experimental results indicate that …

Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung Nov 2015

Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Little is known about the role of prosody in word reading. Mandarin-English bilingual speakers who speak Mandarin as a first language (L1) and English as a second language (L2) are particularly interesting because they must acquire two segmental/phonology systems (Mandarin has simpler syllable structures than does English), linguistic prosody systems (Mandarin tone and English stress), and orthographic systems (Chinese characters and English alphabet). The two papers included in the dissertation implemented correlational designs to examine the contributions of prosodic awareness and other variables to word reading in adult Mandarin-speaking English learners and Mandarin-English bilingual children. The first paper examined English …

Effects Of Competing News Media Frames Of Weight On Antifat Stigma, Beliefs About Weight, And Support For Obesity-Related Public Policies, David Frederick, Abigail C. Saguy, Gaganjyot Sandhu, Traci Mann Nov 2015

Effects Of Competing News Media Frames Of Weight On Antifat Stigma, Beliefs About Weight, And Support For Obesity-Related Public Policies, David Frederick, Abigail C. Saguy, Gaganjyot Sandhu, Traci Mann

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Objectives: In the popular news media, public health officials routinely emphasize the health risks of obesity and portray weight as under personal control. These messages may increase support for policies designed to reduce rates of obesity, but can also increase antifat stigma. Less often, the media cover "Health at Every Size" or "Fat Rights" perspectives, which may have the opposite effects. We investigated how exposure to different "fat frames" shifts attitudes about weight and support for obesity policies. Methods: Across four experiments (N = 2187), people read constructed news articles framing fatness as negative (unhealthy, controllable, acceptable to …
