Mining And Hiv/Aids Transmission Among Marampa Mining Communities In Lunsar, Sierra Leone, Alphajoh Cham
Mining And Hiv/Aids Transmission Among Marampa Mining Communities In Lunsar, Sierra Leone, Alphajoh Cham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) was first reported in Sierra Leone in 1987, its prevalence rate has stabilized at 1.5% in the nation's general population. However, concerns exist regarding the potential increase in high-risk populations, particularly among mineworkers and commercial sex workers. The potential spread of HIV/AIDS as a result of labor migration may threaten the mining sector, which has been identified as a critical driver of recent economic growth and development. A gap remains in the literature regarding the contextual factors in mining communities that lead to high rates of HIV/AIDS. Therefore, the purpose of …

Commentary: Applying Positive Development Principles To Group Interventions For The Promotion Of Family Resilience In Pediatric Psychology, Jessica C. Kichler, Astrida S. Kaugars
Commentary: Applying Positive Development Principles To Group Interventions For The Promotion Of Family Resilience In Pediatric Psychology, Jessica C. Kichler, Astrida S. Kaugars
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
As described in the call for this special issue, resilience is often defined as “achieving one or more positive outcomes despite exposure to significant risk or adversity” (Hilliard, Harris, & Weissberg-Benchell, 2012, p. 739). Resilience is particularly relevant to pediatric psychology, as youth and their families are tasked with overcoming risk factors simply by the nature of a child’s diagnosis of a disease/chronic illness and subsequent medical management demands. In addition to identifying key resilience factors within this population, it is critical to develop empirically supported clinical interventions to promote healthy biological, psychological, and social development; reduce youth psychopathology; and …
Discrepancy Between Parents And Children In Reporting Of Distress And Impairment: Association With Critical Symptoms, Laura Bein, Megan Lynn Petrik, Stephen M. Saunders, James V. Wojcik
Discrepancy Between Parents And Children In Reporting Of Distress And Impairment: Association With Critical Symptoms, Laura Bein, Megan Lynn Petrik, Stephen M. Saunders, James V. Wojcik
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Background: We examined discrepant parent–child reports of subjective distress and psychosocial impairment.
Method: Parent–child pairs (N = 112 pairs) completed the Health Dynamics Inventory at intake for outpatient therapy.
Results: Average parent scores were significantly higher than average child scores on distress, impairment, and externalizing symptoms, but not internalizing symptoms. There were significant associations between parent–child discrepancy (i.e. children who reported greater distress or impairment than parents or vice versa) and child endorsement of several notable symptoms (rapid mood swings, panic, nightmares, and suicidal ideation).
Conclusion: Parents tended to report more externalizing symptoms, distress, and impairment than children reported; …

Pace, Academic Progress, And The Antecedents Of Student Motivation, Aaron Randall Hiatt
Pace, Academic Progress, And The Antecedents Of Student Motivation, Aaron Randall Hiatt
Master's Theses
The research examined the impact of the pace requirement of the 2010 program integrity legislation at a single graduate institution to gauge its potential for fulfilling the legislation’s stated purpose of increased likelihood of student success. The study determined that there have been changes in registration behavior (particularly in course drop behavior that reduces the number of credits calculated as attempted each semester) since the case institution introduced the pace requirement in Fall 2011. An increase in course completion efficiency was also found. The doctoral candidacy qualifying phase was singled out for a more refined examination, which was loosely tracked …

Feasibility Of An Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Adjunctive Web-Based Program For Counseling Centers, Michael E. Levin, Jacqueline Pistorello, Steven C. Hayes, John R. Seeley, Crissa Levin
Psychology Faculty Publications
Web-based adjunctive tools provide a promising method for addressing the challenges college counseling centers face in meeting the mental health needs of students. The current study tested an initial adjunctive prototype based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in a pre-post open trial with 30 counselors and 82 student clients across 4 counseling centers. Results indicated high ratings of program satisfaction and usability with counselors and students. The majority of students completed at least part of the program. Significant improvements were found across almost all outcome and ACT process measures with student clients. Improvements in student outcomes were predicted by …

Decoupling As A Mechanism Of Change In Mindfulness And Acceptance: A Literature Review, Michael E. Levin, Jason B. Luoma, Jack Haegar
Psychology Faculty Publications
A growing body of research within the acceptance and mindfulness-based therapies suggests these treatments may function in part by reducing or eliminating (i.e., decoupling) the normative relationships between internal experiences and other internal/overt behavior. Examples of decoupling effects found in this review include reduced relationships between urges to smoke and smoking behavior, between dysphoric mood and depressive cognitions, and between pain intensity and persistence in a painful task. A literature review identified 44 studies on acceptance and mindfulness that demonstrated decoupling effects. Overall, preliminary evidence for decoupling effects were found across a broad range of problem areas including substance abuse, …

The Difference Principle In Rawls: Pragmatic Or Infertile?, Farzaneh Esmaeili
The Difference Principle In Rawls: Pragmatic Or Infertile?, Farzaneh Esmaeili
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis attempts to provide a coherent view of the idea of ‘justice as fairness’ and, in particular, the ‘difference principle’ expressed by John Rawls in A Theory of Justice. The main focus of the thesis is the difference principle and its limits. Rawls’s conception of ‘justice as fairness’ is based on the thought experiment of the ‘original position’ in which people, considered as free and equal, deliberate under an imagined ‘veil of ignorance,’ i.e. not knowing which social roles or status they would occupy in their society. Rawls then argues that in the original position people come up with …

At summer’s end, SURF participants were asked to summarize their research experiences for this publication.
Antisaccade Inhibition As An Endophenotype Of Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Study Of Psychometric Schizotypes, Jonathan H. Novi
Antisaccade Inhibition As An Endophenotype Of Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Study Of Psychometric Schizotypes, Jonathan H. Novi
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eye movement deficits have been shown to be more prevalent in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia compared to the general population. Dysfunction in the antisaccade (AS) system has been a topic of particular interest in this population, in part because it may provide insight into the pathophysiology of a complex, heterogeneous disorder. Researchers have broadened their investigation of AS deficits in an attempt to identify those who possess a genetic liability for a schizophrenia-spectrum disorder. These subthreshold traits, otherwise known as endophenotypes, are hypothesized to exist in individuals at-risk for developing schizophrenia (i.e., schizotypes), even though they may not display the …
Certified Athletic Trainer's Knowledge Of Posterolateral Corner Injuries, Stephen Edwards
Certified Athletic Trainer's Knowledge Of Posterolateral Corner Injuries, Stephen Edwards
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Context: Posterolateral corner (PLC) knee injuries are often complex and frequently overlooked. Diagnosis of PLC injuries may be difficult when symptoms are masked by those of cruciate ligament injury. Failure to diagnose and appropriately treat underlying PLC injury can increase the risk of an individual experiencing graft failure after reconstruction of a concomitantly injured cruciate ligament. Objective: Our purpose was to identify if a knowledge gap exists in the Athletic Training population by comparing pre-test perceived knowledge to actual knowledge of PLC injury assessment and to determine the effect of taking a test on perceived knowledge. The relationship between perceived …
Current Grading Practices For Indiana Elementary Grades K-5 And The Impact On Communication, Assessment, And Student Mindset, Paula Rae Concus
Current Grading Practices For Indiana Elementary Grades K-5 And The Impact On Communication, Assessment, And Student Mindset, Paula Rae Concus
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study involved elementary teachers in Indiana who were actively teaching during the spring of 2015. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a significant difference between the perceptions of teachers using traditional report cards and those who use standards-based report cards in the areas of assessment of students, communication from the viewpoint of teachers and from the viewpoint of parents, and mindset of students. Results were viewed through the lens of students of affluence (< 35% free/reduced lunch) and students of poverty (≥ 50% free/reduced lunch). Standards-based responses in the areas of assessment, communication from the viewpoint of teachers and parents, and student mindset were statistically significant factors for students of poverty; assessment was also significant for students of affluence. Traditional report cards offered statistical significance only for students of affluence in the area of communication from the teacher viewpoint. Communication from the parent viewpoint (reported by teachers) and student mindset were not statistically significant factors for students of affluence in either reporting system, meaning teachers of students of affluence did not find traditional report cards or standards-based report cards as more important. Implications of these findings are of particular importance to teachers of students of poverty, as the use of standards-based report cards are significant when teachers look at student assessment, teacher communication, parent communication, and student mindset. Although traditional report cards actually showed significance in one area (teacher communication) for one student group (students of affluence), more consideration should be given to the use of standards-based report cards for all students.
Using A Mg-M Imagery Intervention To Enhance The Sport Competence Of Young Special Olympics Athletes, Kelley Catenacci
Using A Mg-M Imagery Intervention To Enhance The Sport Competence Of Young Special Olympics Athletes, Kelley Catenacci
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The opportunity for athletes with an intellectual disability (ID) to participate in sport is limited due to physical, social, and psychological barriers (Shields, Synnot, & Barr, 2012). Sport psychology interventions may have the capacity to address these barriers, namely the lack of sport competence that athletes with an ID tend to experience (Vealey, Hayashi, Garner-Holman, & Giacobbi, 1998). Therefore, this single subject A-B-A design sought to enhance sport competence among athletes with an ID using personalized motivational general-mastery (MG-M) imagery scripts. The study spanned six weeks and was implemented with five Special Olympics athletes (Mage = 11.40) who had …
Psychopathy And Attachment: The Effect Of Security Priming On Psychopathy In A College Student Sample, Blake D. Herd
Psychopathy And Attachment: The Effect Of Security Priming On Psychopathy In A College Student Sample, Blake D. Herd
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Psychopathy has been defined as a pattern of negative behaviors, social interactions, and affective features, including impoverishment of emotion, unethical and manipulative actions, and impulsivity (Neumann & Hare, 2008). It is estimated that between 15 to 30 percent of incarcerated adults meet the criteria for psychopathy (Hare, 1991, 1996; Salekin, Rogers, Ustad, & Sewell, 1998). Because psychopathy is linked with deviant behaviors and a significant portion of incarcerated adults are high in psychopathy, methods of reducing psychopathy are needed. The current longitudinal study sought to reduce state psychopathy levels through secure attachment priming. It was first hypothesized that the mean …

A Person's A Person No Matter How Small - Understanding The Role Of Temperament In Working With Toddlers And Young Children, Robinson B. Kimberly, Ann Vanbuskirk Dr.
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Abstract Early childhood and educational research have indicated that a young child’s temperament is predictive of success in school and adulthood. A child’s temperament has the potential to impact not only their interpretation of life events, but can also influence the activities that they choose and how adults respond to and interact with them. Child temperament research has identified three widely known profiles based on nine dimensions of behavior: “difficult”, “easy”, and “slow to warm up”. The purpose of this presentation is to provide information about child temperament and the ways in which adults can use positive relational interventions to …

Battling With Monsters : Integrated Gamification In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Lee Hibbard
Theses
The study of games features in digital media and game design classrooms, but no research exists on a combination of gamification and bringing games as texts into the first-year composition classroom. Using the method of `integrated gamification', I created an innovative multimodal classroom that includes the study of videogame texts alongside literature, film, and television texts, and uses the mechanics of those videogame texts to create a deeper immersion in the course content. In my thesis research, I will demonstrate the impact integrated gamification has on students in the first year composition classroom as recorded from a semester-long case study …
The Center Of His Existence : Domestic Architecture & Class Identity In Nineteenth Century Lincoln County, Tennessee, Jillian Rael
The Center Of His Existence : Domestic Architecture & Class Identity In Nineteenth Century Lincoln County, Tennessee, Jillian Rael
Theses
"The Center of His Existence: Domestic Architecture & Class Identity in Nineteenth-Century Lincoln County, Tennessee" presents the Whitaker family of Lincoln County, Tennessee as an example of a middle class forming in the rural South during the Antebellum period. In showing the family's interests in economic diversity in the fields of agriculture and industry, religious involvement, and Northern-style progress, this thesis makes the case for a wider class-identity taking shape in provincial areas of the South. Moreover, it shows that the originating culture of the Whitaker family impacted their migration patterns and shaped the culture of their final location of …
Effects Of Expressive Suppression On Emotion Recognition And Cardiovascular And Subjective Reactivity, Cassandra Baldwin
Effects Of Expressive Suppression On Emotion Recognition And Cardiovascular And Subjective Reactivity, Cassandra Baldwin
Theses
Expressive suppression is a late-occurring emotion regulation strategy in which individuals suppress the expression of their emotional behavior. Suppression was hypothesized to negatively impact the recognition of facial expressions compared to a control condition and to increase sympathetic activity. Women completed a series of emotion recognition tasks under a neutral condition, with a music emotion induction, and with a music induction while suppressing their emotional expression, concluding each block by completing subjective ratings. Pulse amplitude reactivity, reaction time, and accuracy rate were other dependent variables. Suppression while listening to music resulted in the greatest reactivity. Furthermore, listening to music without …
The Effectiveness Of Warnings On Personal Identity Disclosure, Payton Brown
The Effectiveness Of Warnings On Personal Identity Disclosure, Payton Brown
Theses
Studies have shown 87% of people in the United States can be uniquely identified by only their zip code, gender, and date of birth. These three personal identity elements are not typically considered sensitive information by the general public. The purpose of this study was to develop a method to stop individuals from disclosing personal information that they deem unimportant by using warning messages and subliminal signals to influence their decisions. Warnings have been studied rigorously in real-world situations, but little research has been conducted on warnings in an online context. The use of a subliminal signal with a supraliminal …
Boundary Conditions Of Font Size Effects, Kyeong M. Park
Boundary Conditions Of Font Size Effects, Kyeong M. Park
Theses
Prior research has shown that people perceive items in a larger font size as being more memorable than items in a smaller font size. This perception leads to higher judgments of learning (JOLs; i.e., confidence ratings regarding the likelihood of recalling an item) for larger font size items than smaller font size items. Yet other research has shown that people recalled more when the information was presented in a smaller font than when it was presented in a larger font size. The present study examined if there are boundary conditions of font sizes affecting JOLs and actual recall performance. As …
