Moving Forward, Looking Back: A Retrospective On Sexual Harassment Law, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2015

Moving Forward, Looking Back: A Retrospective On Sexual Harassment Law, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

The fiftieth anniversary of Title VII provides an appropriate occasion to look back to an era when women suffered sexual abuse in the workplace (and many other places) with no possible recourse. Once feminist writers and litigators connected the dots, judges came to understand that a broad mandate to end sex discrimination had to include a mandate to eliminate sexual harassment at work. The decades that followed saw the step-by-step construction of a doctrine that ostensibly protects employees from unwanted sexual behavior at work.

In this symposium issue the author examines the impact of sexual harassment law citing several court …

The Workplace Hassles From Interruptions Measure (Whim), Stacy Wilkes Jan 2015

The Workplace Hassles From Interruptions Measure (Whim), Stacy Wilkes

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The literature indicates that an interrupted work environment may act as a stressor on employees. Yet, systematic measurement and empirical testing of employees' perceptions of workplace interruptions are lacking. Here, I describe a set of studies in which I developed and tested a self-report measure of workplace interruptions: the Workplace Hassles from Interruptions Measure (WHIM). The WHIM is based on a theoretically proposed typology of interruptions that included intrusions, distractions, discrepancy detections, and breaks. I analyzed the resultant scale to determine it is factorially identifiable (N = 317) and confirmed the four-factor structure via confirmatory factor analysis. Finally, I tested …

The Relationship Of Perceived Social Support And The Big Five In Adolescents, Raymond L. Geosling Jan 2015

The Relationship Of Perceived Social Support And The Big Five In Adolescents, Raymond L. Geosling

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Social support is important for adolescents as it is related to outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. These associations are well established in the literature as known factors related to adolescents' perception of social support from parents, teachers, friends, and classmates. However, it is important for researchers to understand additional factors that are related to perceived social support. One factor that is relevant to all students is personality. This factor has been investigated with adolescents outside of the United States but has not been investigated with adolescents in the United States. The present study sought to investigate the relationship …

Principals' Perceptions Of The Impact Of Parent And Family Involvement Activities With Parents Of Latino Students, Rene D. Carranza Jan 2015

Principals' Perceptions Of The Impact Of Parent And Family Involvement Activities With Parents Of Latino Students, Rene D. Carranza

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Latinos have a pattern of low academic achievement, starting in elementary school and persisting through high school and college. This pattern of achievement remains lower than that of any other group. In 2050, it is expected that Latinos will make up 30% of the U.S. workforce. This research looks at the role that parent involvement plays in academic achievement based on principals' perceptions. Perceptions are important because they influence behavior and decision making. The parent-involvement activities studied are based on the Epstein framework of six types. A survey was sent to 435 principals from the northwest suburbs of Chicago who …

Relations Among Gender Typicality, Anxiety, Depression And Homophobic And Peer Victimization, Caicina Jones Jan 2015

Relations Among Gender Typicality, Anxiety, Depression And Homophobic And Peer Victimization, Caicina Jones

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Deviation from established gender roles may contribute to the experiences of peer victimization by LGBTQ and heterosexual students. However this assertion has only primarily been explored among adult LGBTQ individuals. Gender nonconforming behavior may contribute to perceptions of LGBTQ status and peer victimization as a result of those perceptions. Prior research indicates that there associations among low gender typicality, peer victimization due to bullying, and negative psychosocial outcomes. It is important to further study these associations among youth populations. The current study examined the relations among Gender Typicality, internalizing distress (Anxiety and Depression), and Victimization (homophobic and general peer). The …

Social Bonds, Cardiovascular Function, And Serotonin : Insights From An Animal Model, Neal Daniel Mcneal Jan 2015

Social Bonds, Cardiovascular Function, And Serotonin : Insights From An Animal Model, Neal Daniel Mcneal

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Social relationships positively influence psychological and biological function in humans and other mammals. The disruption of an individual's social environment through separation or death often results in social isolation, which can adversely impact mental and cardiovascular health (Frasure-Smith, Lesperance, & Talajic, 1993; Gore, 1978). The general purpose of this experiment is to further investigate neurobiological mechanisms mediating the adverse effects of social stress and focused on the role of serotonin in that relationship. An animal model was used to simulate social stress in humans. Specifically, the goal of this study is to explore the effects of sertraline hydrochloride (Zoloft) on …

Victimization Among Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder : An Examination Of Youth Anxiety And The Role Of Social Support, Nathan Matthew Elzinga

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research study sought to better understand the relation between high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and victimization from bullying. The literature thus far has identified that youth with high functioning ASD are more likely to be victimized than typically developing peers or peers with other disabilities, yet relatively little work has been done to further understand this relation. The current study sought to better understand parent-child agreement rates regarding child experiences of victimization from bullying as well as how these rates differ depending upon a child's ASD presentation. Because of the way the unique social presentation of youth with …

When Student-On-Student Sexual Harassment Triggers School District Liability Under Title Ix, Joe Salmieri Iii Jan 2015

When Student-On-Student Sexual Harassment Triggers School District Liability Under Title Ix, Joe Salmieri Iii

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in education, including K-12 institutions and colleges/universities. The United States Supreme Court has held that Title IX holds schools liable for sex discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual assault. In the landmark case, Davis v. Monroe County Board of Education, the Supreme Court identified the criteria in which a school district can be held liable for student-on-student sexual harassment under Title IX. The Supreme Court's criterion is presented in the form of a three-prong test, and all prongs must be satisfied for liability to exist. The first prong is …

Writing Against The Ethos Of Individualism : A Study In Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, Manahari Adhikari Jan 2015

Writing Against The Ethos Of Individualism : A Study In Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, Manahari Adhikari

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Drawing from existential philosophy, neuroscience, and social psychology, in Writing Against the Ethos of Individualism: A Study in Contemporary Multiethnic American Fiction, I investigate the representation of the self in fictions by Bharati Mukherjee, Leslie Marmon Silko, Maxine Hong Kingston, Sandra Cisneros, and Toni Morrison. I argue that these writers imagine the lives of their fictional characters in terms of the phenomenology of existence and reveal how subjective experiences and personal relationships influence who these characters are and who they become. In imagining a self's authentic ontology in relation to others, multiethnic writers not only write against the dominant narratives …

A Study Of The Statutes, Regulations And Judicial Rulings Impacting The Access Of Service Animals To The Public Schools, Jenell A. Mroz Jan 2015

A Study Of The Statutes, Regulations And Judicial Rulings Impacting The Access Of Service Animals To The Public Schools, Jenell A. Mroz

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The use of service animals is growing in the United States. Since public schools are a microcosm of society, it is not surprising requests for service animals to attend public school are growing as well. In the absence of a Supreme Court decision on service animals attending public schools, a systematic review of disability legislation, governing agencies' interpretation, and court decisions helps school officials develop appropriate policies and procedures for allowing students to attend school accompanied by a service animal.;This study involved an extensive search for historical and current litigation and legislation addressing issues related to the regulation of service …

A Historical Analysis On The Status Of Unilateral Private Placements In Special Education, Jeremy Lambe Jan 2015

A Historical Analysis On The Status Of Unilateral Private Placements In Special Education, Jeremy Lambe

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

With the passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA) in 1975, parents were provided the right to a hearing if they did not agree with the special educational services being provided to their child. However, it was not until the IDEA 1997 amendments that tuition reimbursement was specifically offered when a school district failed to provide a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to a child with a disability. In current times, when parents disagree about the services provided to their child, they often do not wait for the due process procedure to resolve the issue. Instead, …

A Journey Of Joy- A Biography Of An Excellent Mathematics Teacher : Exploring What Influenced Her Retention In Teaching, Patricia S. Mannion Rowe

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine a retired teacher's reflections on career, professional, and personal influences which contributed to her retention in teaching. This study was guided by the research question: How have career, professional, and personal influences contributed to one teacher's retention? This was explored through a biography of her teaching career and an analysis of the revealed factors using Herzberg's Motivator-Hygiene Theory. Motivators/satisfiers are factors intrinsic to the job itself. The following satisfiers emerged: the work itself (including creativity, classroom management, curriculum, challenge, intellectual stimulation, interpersonal relationships, joy, a sense of purpose, altruism), achievement, growth (including …

A Legal Analysis Of School Vouchers And The Social Justice Impact, Michael Patrick Ryan Jan 2015

A Legal Analysis Of School Vouchers And The Social Justice Impact, Michael Patrick Ryan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

While our nation's best students can generally be found in predominately white, suburban, and middle to upper-middle class school districts, our weakest students can generally be found in predominately inner-city school districts with high minority populations. To address the disparities between schools a variety of reforms, initiatives, and programs have been created and implemented -- with seemingly little if any long-lasting positive effects. It is this researcher's contention that the one reform movement that is different from the other measures is school choice. It is different because it is the only reform measure that leaves the decision on what is …
