The Culture Of Environmental Awareness And The Nature Of Social Life In Iraqi Society: A Field Social Research In The City Of Diwaniyah, Nabil Imran Musa Al Khalidi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The environment is the surroundings or milieu in which a human being is born, grows up, and lives until his life ends and he is buried in its soil. God has endowed man with biological characteristics that distinguish him from other creatures. God created it in a balanced form that ensures the satisfaction of human needs and requirements. When population growth increased, and with it, human desires and ambitions, it began to deplete the environment's resources without regard for the right of future generations to benefit from environmental resources. Recently, the interest of all human societies in the environment has …

Evaluation By Competencies As A Tool To Develop The Role Of The Teacher According To The Concept Of Total Quality Management In Future Education, Saad Hussein Alwan Al-Sultani

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Total quality in future education seeks to prepare students with specific characteristics that enable them to cope with the abundance of information, continuous change processes, and tremendous technological progress. Their role is not limited to acquiring knowledge and listening, but rather to the process of dealing with knowledge and utilizing it to the extent sufficient to serve the learning process. This requires the formation of a person with specific specifications to absorb everything new and accelerating and deal with it effectively, a person characterized by flexibility, a love of knowledge, and the ability to follow changes. It also requires a …

Effects Of Automation On Aircrew Workload And Situation Awareness In Tactical Airlift Missions, David R. Meyer Dec 2015

Effects Of Automation On Aircrew Workload And Situation Awareness In Tactical Airlift Missions, David R. Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

In tactical aviation, decision superiority brought upon by high situation awareness remains the arbiter of combat effectiveness. The advancement of sophisticated avionics and highly automated cockpits has allowed for the reduction of aircrew size, and in certain platforms, removal of the crew from the aircraft entirely. However, these developments have not reduced the complex and dynamic interaction between situation awareness and crew workload. While many predictive and experimental methods of evaluating workload exist, situation awareness can only be measured by conducting trials with human operators in a functional prototype. This thesis proposes an innovative methodology to predicatively determine situation awareness …

Exploring End User Experience: How Can We Achieve Lifelong Engagement With Physical Activity Tracking Devices?, Mohammed Karim Impelee

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects

Activity tracking devices provide biofeedback information and encourage people to be active, however, their long-term usage has been problematic. This study explored the theory of reinforcement techniques and the theory of self- determination to enhance long-term usage of activity tracking devices.

A sample of 43 people was surveyed to examine their experience with activity tracking devices. A multi-regression analysis demonstrated significant results(R square=71.6% Sig level=0.012 N=43). The result indicates how individuals with different orientations likely to perceive the supportiveness of their devices and how likely they were to continue using or stop using their devices. Conclusion: understanding the principles of …

The Acute Relationships Between Affect, Physical Feeling States, And Physical Activity In Daily Life: A Review Of Current Evidence, Yue Liao, Eleanor T. Shonkoff, Genevieve F. Dunton

Kinesiology Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Until recently, most studies investigating the acute relationships between affective and physical feeling states and physical activity were conducted in controlled laboratory settings, whose results might not translate well to everyday life. This review was among the first attempts to synthesize current evidence on the acute (e.g., within a few hours) relationships between affective and physical feeling states and physical activity from studies conducted in free-living, naturalistic settings in non-clinical populations. A systematic literature search yielded 14 eligible studies for review. Six studies tested the relationship between affective states and subsequent physical activity; findings from these studies suggest that positive …

An Examination Of The Disparity Between Self-Identified Versus Legally-Identified Rape Victimization: A Pilot Study, Dorothy F. Marsil, Corinne Mcnamara

Faculty Articles

Objective: Researchers compared rape victimization based on self-identification to the current, federal legal definition in a pilot study of college students. Methods: The sample was comprised of 1,648 (69.8% female; 30.2% male) college students who completed the SES-SFV online. Results: Based on the current, legal definition of rape, 9.4% (11.1% female; 5.2% male) of students had been raped since being enrolled, but only 2.9% of students self-identified as being raped. Moreover, 15.1% of students reported ever being raped, with females acknowledging higher rates (19.7%) than males (4.3%). Conclusions: Rape continues to be a major issue for colleges and universities. A …

Strategic Decision Making For Organizational Sustainability: The Implications Of Servant Leadership And Sustainable Leadership Approaches, Judita Peterlin, Noel Pearse, Vlado Dimovski Dec 2015

Strategic Decision Making For Organizational Sustainability: The Implications Of Servant Leadership And Sustainable Leadership Approaches, Judita Peterlin, Noel Pearse, Vlado Dimovski

Economic and Business Review

This conceptual paper explores the implications of servant leadership and sustainable leadership for strategic decision making by the top management of an organization. It is argued that a different type of leadership is required if effective strategic decisions are to be made in organizations striving to become more sustainable and that servant leadership and sustainable leadership approaches provide a sound basis to inform these decisions. The contributions of these two leadership approaches are explored, before considering the implications for leadership development. Particularly, the inclusion in leadership development programmes of values based leadership, and the development of integrative thinking, is discussed.

Can Oversight Mitigate Auditor’S Motivated Reasoning? An Experimental Study, Sergeja Slapničar, Igor Lončarski, Maja Zaman Dec 2015

Can Oversight Mitigate Auditor’S Motivated Reasoning? An Experimental Study, Sergeja Slapničar, Igor Lončarski, Maja Zaman

Economic and Business Review

Evidence of auditors’ failure to provide an independent opinion has reopened debates on measures to ensure auditor independence. We examine the effectiveness of oversight on two prominent determinants of auditor’s biased opinion – financial incentives and a personal relationship with the client. We conduct a between-subject experiment involving an accounting choice task. We find a significant effect of a personal relationship on the auditor’s choice after controlling for financial incentives. Oversight has a significant negative effect on auditor’s choice arising from financial incentives, whereas a personal relationship significantly reduces the effectiveness of oversight. Our results show that, in addition to …

Immigration Attitudes And Support For The Welfare State In The American Mass Public, James C. Garand, Ping Xu, Belinda C. Davis Dec 2015

Immigration Attitudes And Support For The Welfare State In The American Mass Public, James C. Garand, Ping Xu, Belinda C. Davis

Political Science Faculty Publications

In this article, we explore the relationship between Americans’ attitudes toward immigrants and immigration and their attitudes toward welfare. Using data from the Cumulative American National Election Study from 1992 to 2012, we find ample evidence of the influence of immigration attitudes on both individuals’ attitudes toward welfare recipients and their attitudes toward increased welfare spending. These immigration effects persist even in the face of statistical controls for attitudes toward African Americans and attitudes toward the poor; indeed, in our models, the magnitude of the effects of immigration attitudes surpasses the magnitude of effects of attitudes toward blacks. Further, our …

Workload In Nursing: A Descriptive Study Using Cognitive Work Analysis, Jonathan Umansky Dec 2015

Workload In Nursing: A Descriptive Study Using Cognitive Work Analysis, Jonathan Umansky

Theses

Nursing is a high workload profession, and excessive workload has been shown to have an adverse effect on patient care. This problem has been compounded by shortages of qualified nurses in hospitals, resulting in increased workload of the existing nursing staff. Prior research has focused on patient-staff ratios and skill mix to analyze the relationship of workload and degradation of care. The current research implemented a multi-dimensional model for analyzing nurses’ workload in a large general hospital. This method afforded the researcher the opportunity to examine a work domain from multiple angles. Nurses play versatile roles, and workload extends beyond …

Simultaneous Dynamic Optical Refraction And Biometry Of The Human Accommodative Response, Victor M. Hernandez Dec 2015

Simultaneous Dynamic Optical Refraction And Biometry Of The Human Accommodative Response, Victor M. Hernandez

Open Access Dissertations

The ability of the crystalline lens to change shape and bring near objects into focus is known as accommodation. Over time, the deformability of the lens decreases, deteriorating near visual function. This condition is known as presbyopia. There are many ways in which presbyopia correction is addressed, but currently there does not exist a method capable of restoring a dynamic visual range. In order to better understand the accommodative process and evaluate future corrective approaches, we require a system capable of dynamically acquiring refraction and biometric information. The goal of this work was to design, develop, and test a system …

Initiating A Bystander Awareness Program At A State University, Kristine B. Sparks

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Crime in schools, colleges and universities is a troublesome social problem. It affects not only those involved in the criminal incident, but it also inhibits societal growth and stability. To address this issue, the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE Act) of 2013 requires that colleges participating in federal student aid programs must provide “primary prevention and awareness programs” for new students and employees, as well as ongoing crime prevention and awareness campaigns. Implementation was mandated to be started by October 1, 2014. Most prevention programs teach students how to avoid situations, abusive behaviors and potential attacks. This project initiates …

Reliability And Validity Of Neurobehavioral Function On The Psychology Experimental Building Language Test Battery In Young Adults, Brian J. Piper, Shane Mueller, Alexander R. Geerken, Kyle L. Dixon, Gregory Kroliczak, Reid H. Olsen, Jeremy K. Miller

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Background. The Psychology Experiment Building Language (PEBL) software consists of over one-hundred computerized tests based on classic and novel cognitive neuropsychology and behavioral neurology measures. Although the PEBL tests are becoming more widely utilized, there is currently very limited information about the psychometric properties of these measures.

Methods. Study I examined inter-relationships among nine PEBL tests including indices of motor-function (Pursuit Rotor and Dexterity), attention (Test of Attentional Vigilance and Time-Wall), working memory (Digit Span Forward), and executive-function (PEBL Trail Making Test, Berg/Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Iowa Gambling Test, and Mental Rotation) in a normative sample (N = 189, …

Development Of The Pebl Traveling Salesman Problem Computerized Testbed, Shane T. Mueller, Brandon S. Perelman, Yin Yin Tan, Kejkaew Thanasuan

The Journal of Problem Solving

The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a combinatorial optimization problem that requires finding the shortest path through a set of points (“cities”) that returns to the starting point. Because humans provide heuristic near-optimal solutions to Euclidean versions of the problem, it has sometimes been used to investigate human visual problem solving ability. The TSP is also similar to a number of tasks commonly used for neuropsychological assessment (such as the trail-making test), and so its utility in assessing reliable individual differences in problem solving has sometimes been examined. Nevertheless, the task has seen little widespread use in clinical and assessment …

Exploring The Relationship Between Commuting Stress, Job Strain And Safety Behaviors While Commuting: The Dual Role Of Work-Related Rumination, Katrina A. Burch Dec 2015

Exploring The Relationship Between Commuting Stress, Job Strain And Safety Behaviors While Commuting: The Dual Role Of Work-Related Rumination, Katrina A. Burch

Master's Theses

For those who commute to and from work on a daily basis, this is an activity that requires attention to both what one is doing and the environment, in order for the commute to be done safely. Although research has shown that work can spill over into home and other non-work domains, very little attention has been paid to the impact that work may have on the transition time between one’s work and home domains. The present study sought to examine the impact of daily commuting stress and end-of-day job strain on the safety of one’s commute through the experience …
