The Landwarnet School, The Army Learning Model, And Appreciative Inquiry: How Is A Centralized Training Organization Improved By Introducing Decentralization?, Lisa Jayne Stamper
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This exploratory, qualitative case study describes how a centralized training organization (LandWarNet School) was improved by introducing decentralization (Army Learning Model) toward “the best competitive position” or "sweet spot," defined by Brafman and Beckstrom (2006) as “enough decentralization for creativity, but sufficient structure and controls to ensure consistency” (pp. 189, 191). Any presence of the six chaordic elements of a decentralized organization, as described by Hock (1999), was also considered.
LandWarNet School (LWNS) trains approximately 6000 US Army Soldiers annually and is centrally organized. The new Army Learning Model (ALM) is a vision for a more decentralized training approach where …
Measuring The Cost And Performance Of Lithic Industries At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408), Patrick Christropher Lewis
Measuring The Cost And Performance Of Lithic Industries At The Sunrise Ridge Borrow Pit Site (45pi408), Patrick Christropher Lewis
All Master's Theses
This thesis applies a theoretically informed protocol that focuses on variation in stone tool manufacture and use as measured in the 45PI408 lithic assemblage. The model used is based on the variables of stone tool cost and performance. Guided by this model, technological and functional paradigmatic classifications are employed to measure intrasite variation in lithic frequencies. This method avoids difficulties encountered by previous archaeologists by using mutually exclusive analytical units that measure subtle variation in the archaeological record. Variability in technological and functional paradigmatic classificatory dimensions such as stone tool heat treatment, raw materials, use wear, and reduction class were …
Essay: A Positive Perspective On Regulation Of The Workplace Relationship, Dana M. Muir
Essay: A Positive Perspective On Regulation Of The Workplace Relationship, Dana M. Muir
Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review
Positive Organizational Scholarship studies how business organizations and their employees excel and thrive. It takes the opposite perspective from the traditional organizational research that examines negative deviance and how that deviance inhibits organizational performance. Like traditional organizational scholars, legal scholars (as well as lawyers, legislators, judges, and regulators) typically focus on problems. Examples abound in the field of employment law. For example, to what extent does employment discrimination still exist and how can it be eliminated? And, what constraints prevent Americans from achieving retirement security and how can those constraints be eliminated? This Essay proposes that we examine the Positive …
Health Behaviors, Hardiness, And Burnout In Mental Health Workers, Jeremiah Brian Schimp
Health Behaviors, Hardiness, And Burnout In Mental Health Workers, Jeremiah Brian Schimp
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Burnout has emerged as a significant and costly issue in the modern workforce. Researchers have not fully explored the role of individual health behaviors and personality in burnout among mental health workers. The knowledge gap addressed in this study was the connection between health behaviors, what mental health workers do to take care of themselves, and hardiness, the characteristic way they perceive and interpret environmental challenges. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of health behaviors and hardiness among mental health workers on the 3 dimensions of burnout as measured by the MBI-HSS: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and …

Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith
Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith
Management Faculty Publications
Through a critique of existing financial theory underlying current accounting practices, and reapplication of this theory to a broad group of stakeholders, this paper lays a normative foundation for a revised perspective on the responsibility of the public accounting profession. Specifically, we argue that the profession should embrace the development of standards for reporting information important to a broader group of stakeholders than just investors and creditors. The FASB has recently moved in the opposite direction. Nonetheless, an institution around accounting for stakeholders continues to grow, backed by a groundswell of support from many sources. Based on institutional theory, we …

The Cost Of Workplace Bullying In Irish Universities, Patrick Pearse Rockett
The Cost Of Workplace Bullying In Irish Universities, Patrick Pearse Rockett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employees who demean and degrade coworkers cost organizations billions of dollars every year. Workplace bullying is a business problem that affects up to 15% of employees, and little empirical research is available to establish the extent of bullying in academia. Bullies flourish in decentralized structures, and universities can be particularly susceptible to bullying behavior because of their decentralized structures of teaching and research that promote the growth of microclimates in segregated silos, from laboratories to small departments. The purpose of this multiple-case, census sample study was to explore the cost-reduction strategies that university human resource (HR) leaders use to manage …

Are Peer Specialists Happy? How Training And Role Clarity Affect Job Satisfaction, Sarah E. Jenkins
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Peer support has come a long way since its induction into the mental health field in the 18th century and its attempts to design peer organizations in the early 20th century to where it is today as a mental health service reimbursed by Medicaid in 34 states. Since peer specialists are vital to recovery oriented care, it is important to understand job satisfaction among peer specialists. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of job training and role clarity on job satisfaction. A three part, 77-item electronic survey was administered to 195 peer specialists. Results suggest a …

“I Didn’T Want My Life To Be Like That”: Gangs, College, Or The Military For Latino Male High School Students, Adrian H. Huerta
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
Nationally, only half of Latino males graduate from high school (Contreras, 2011). Scholars are beginning to critically examine the various internal and external influences which contribute to low academic achievement for Latino males. This qualitative study uses a human ecological theory to examine how Latino male high school students with high academic achievement understand and develop goals to attend postsecondary education versus engaging in gangs or the military. The findings highlight the students’ different levels of college preparation, interactions with military recruitment, and their gang connections.

Methods Of Policing: Deviation From The Standard Model Of Policing And Measured Effectiveness, Elena Stamm
Methods Of Policing: Deviation From The Standard Model Of Policing And Measured Effectiveness, Elena Stamm
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The Standard Model of Policing is the original method of crime control put into place to increase the effectiveness of policing. However, there have been questions about whether or not the standard model has proven to be of any real effect. Since that time, researchers have sought a different model of policing that would prove more effective in crime reduction. This research seeks to analyze whether or not the methods developed are actually shown to be effective, through their study.
Knowledge Acquisition Processes: Understanding The Communication Event, Richard Jack Ulrey Jr.
Knowledge Acquisition Processes: Understanding The Communication Event, Richard Jack Ulrey Jr.
Wayne State University Dissertations
This research project’s two key discoveries offer new insights into Huber’s (1991) KA sub-processes (congenital learning, experimental learning, vicarious learning, grafting, and searching) and understanding the key elements (who, what, when, where, why, and how) of communication events. Organizational leaders and scholars of communication have a better understanding about how one organization’s team of leaders have addressed and responded to the Great Recession of 2008 and the recent explosion of social media in 2003 by practicing a thematic cycle of KA efforts (identification, strategizing, execution, and reflection) to achieve organizational objectives (partners, technologies, and policies) and a strong communication culture …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Service-learning, with a longstanding history in American higher education (Burkhardt & Pasque, 2005), includes three key tenets: superior academic learning, meaningful and relevant community service, and persistent civic learning (McGoldrick and Ziegert, 2002). The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has created an elective classification system – Carnegie Community Engagement Classification – for institutions of higher education to demonstrate the breadth and depth of student involvement and learning through partnerships and engagement in the community (Dalton & Crosby, 2011; Hurtado & DeAngelo, 2012; Kuh et al., 2008; Pryor, Hurtado, Saenz, Santos, & Korn, 2007). Community engagement "is in the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Age And Training On Technology In The Irish Air Navigation Service Sector, Sylvia Meulmester
Theses
Many researchers recognize technology as an area where organisations require adoption by employees for competitive advantage and safety. The implication is that all employees require trust, confidence and understanding of system updates. Research highlighted two areas that may impact technology adoption, age and training, and as such are the two variables that were used in this study using the air traffic management section of the Irish air navigation service provision. The study adopted a positivistic quantitative research design using a questionnaire to collect the data needed to test the hypotheses used and to highlight the demographics. Descriptive and inferential statistics …

EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"The characteristics of school organizations and their reactions to change are critical to success in educational reform and necessary to the health of an organization and the well-being of its members. Organizational change, in order to be effective and sustainable, can use technology but it must also accommodate the need to simplify complexity in schools. Organizing student attendance, current grade status and school bus information, such as between the school and bus stops, on field trips or traveling to other activities outside of school, including sporting events, will ensure that parents know their kids are safe and physically accounted for …

Ceo Duality And Performance Of Not-For-Profit Hospitals, Anh Ngoc Pham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depending on their needs for enhancing and sustaining their business and market values, some firms choose to operate with a corporate governance structure of CEO duality, in which an executive serves as the CEO and the chairperson of the board of directors. The problem addressed in this study is that past empirical and theoretical studies of the relationship between CEO duality and firm performance of organizations across different industries have generated ambiguous results, and no studies have focused specifically on the relationship between CEO duality and financial performance of not-for-profit hospitals. Based on agency and stewardship theories, and considering that …

Three Essays On Public Organizations, Changgeun Yun
Three Essays On Public Organizations, Changgeun Yun
Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration
Organizations play key roles in modern societies. The importance of organizations for a society requires an understanding of organizations. In order to fully understand public organizations, it is necessary to recognize how organizational settings affect subjects of organizations and organizing. Although public and private organizations interrelate with each other, the two types are not identical. In this dissertation, I attempt to describe public organizations in their own setting by discussing three important topics in public organization theory: (1) innovation adoption in the public sector; (2) representative bureaucracy; and (3) decline and death of public organizations.
In Chapter II, I scrutinize …
