Manifestation Of Humanity And Humanism In Czechoslovak Cinema 1949-1953, Selma Rockova Feb 2015

Manifestation Of Humanity And Humanism In Czechoslovak Cinema 1949-1953, Selma Rockova

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The period 1949-1953 was one of the most inhuman times in Czechoslovak history. Almost immediately after the Communists violently took over the country in 1948, the Communist party started a campaign of terror in order to spread fear. It made the society weak and obedient. The terror never disappeared completely but it lost its enormous intensity after Stalin's death in 1953. The end of 1940s and beginning of 1950s was a time of political trials with the party insiders. The false accusations and executions of the innocent people were used to demonstrate to the Soviet Union the power and loyalty …

Who Shall Get More? How Intangible Resources And Aspiration Levels Affect The Valuation Of Resource Providers, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci Feb 2015

Who Shall Get More? How Intangible Resources And Aspiration Levels Affect The Valuation Of Resource Providers, Gokhan Ertug, Fabrizio Castellucci

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, we identify the effects of reputation and status by determining how they are differently valued by organizations that are concurrently pursuing different goals. Building on research on intangible assets and on aspiration levels, we develop a framework to explain organizations’ valuation of resource providers. We expect organizations to value resource providers who possess a specific type of intangible asset higher as their performance, relative to aspirations, decreases on the outcome more closely tied to that particular asset. We also expect to observe this sensitivity primarily when the organization has a low level of the intangible asset in …

An Anatomy Of State Control In The Globalization Of State-Owned Enterprises, Hao Liang, Bing Ren, Sunny Li Sun Feb 2015

An Anatomy Of State Control In The Globalization Of State-Owned Enterprises, Hao Liang, Bing Ren, Sunny Li Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Integrating agency theory with institutional analysis in international business, we propose a state-control perspective to analyze government-control mechanisms in emerging economies’ globalization of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). We identify two types of state control that influence SOEs’ globalization decisions and the degree of globalization: state ownership control and executives’ political connections, both of which are contingent upon the home country’s evolving institutional environments. Using a two-step corporate globalization decision model and 17,272 firm-year observations of non-financial, Chinese-listed companies, we find a strong impact of both types of state control on SOEs’ globalization, although the impacts differ between the periods before and …

A Career Stage Perspective On Employees' Preferred Psychological Contract Contributions And Inducements, Chin Heng Low, Prashant Bordia Feb 2015

A Career Stage Perspective On Employees' Preferred Psychological Contract Contributions And Inducements, Chin Heng Low, Prashant Bordia

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The employer–employee relationship is underpinned by a psychological contract, referring to employees’ beliefs about the exchange of employee contributions and employer inducements. While there is limited understanding of how employers can shape psychological contracts to meet employees’ needs and aspirations, meeting these needs requires understanding employees’ preferences for psychological contract contributions and inducements. The authors propose that career stage models can be used to achieve such understanding. Using the career stage models of Dalton, Thompson, and Price (1977) and Super (1957), insights are derived into the preferred contributions and inducements at various points in an employee’s career lifecycle. These insights …

A Case For Developing Spiritual Intelligence In Leaders Through Equine Facilitated Learning, Cora Maziere, Olen Gunnlaugson Jan 2015

A Case For Developing Spiritual Intelligence In Leaders Through Equine Facilitated Learning, Cora Maziere, Olen Gunnlaugson

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Unpredictable circumstances, growing stresses in an ever-increasing global market, and ubiquitous ennui have left organizations and today’s leaders in government, industry, and academia without the necessary tools to transition to change in a principled manner. The authors explain that the development and maintenance of genuine leadership skills — adaptive to the dictates of the modern world — must be borne from one’s inner self, a retreat to spirituality. One available method of achieving this is through Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning (EFEL), a technique whereby leaders develop critical management skills by working with horses.

Public Policy Implementation: Recreational Marijuana In Colorado, Sara Elena Shoemate Jan 2015

Public Policy Implementation: Recreational Marijuana In Colorado, Sara Elena Shoemate

Public Administration ETDs

In 2012, voters in Colorado and Washington State voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use. These states have the challenging task of creating and implementing a policy framework with which to regulate the now legal cultivation, distribution, and use of marijuana. This is a considerable task due to the lack of precedent and information regarding the issue, and because of the intergovernmental issues involved. This thesis focuses on the issue in regard to local governments in Colorado. The goal of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of the adoption of RME and barriers to the implementation processes of …

Specifically, this study was designed to assess whether preschoolers' living kind conceptual development involves progressive elaboration of an existing biologically based skeletal framework or conceptual reorganization. Unlike previous studies, this study employed a longitudinal design, an extensive stimulus set, alternate indices of understanding, and complementary statistical analyses. Thirty-five 3.0- to 3.5-year-olds participated in four testing sessions over the course of one year; each testing session included three phases that …

Perceptions Of Collaboration And Service Integration As Strategic Alternatives: An Examination Of Social Service Nonprofit Organizations In The Late 1990s, Jennifer A. Wade-Berg, Vanessa Robinson-Dooley Jan 2015

Perceptions Of Collaboration And Service Integration As Strategic Alternatives: An Examination Of Social Service Nonprofit Organizations In The Late 1990s, Jennifer A. Wade-Berg, Vanessa Robinson-Dooley

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) have historically dealt with the problem of trying to build organizational capacity while simultaneously dealing with scarce resources. Consequently, practitioners and scholars continue to offer assistance to nonprofits in the development of techniques aimed at addressing these situations. Recent literature shows a push towards innovation, the use of new organizational tax structures, and/or the use of commercial revenue generating activities as plausible strategic alternatives for dealing with declining resources. While these techniques show promise, they typically are reserved for larger nonprofits (as measured by their funding base) and those nonprofits with missions that lend themselves for such …

Team Production & The Multinational Enterprise, Virginia Harper Ho Jan 2015

Team Production & The Multinational Enterprise, Virginia Harper Ho

Seattle University Law Review

Margaret Blair and Lynn Stout’s path-breaking article, A Team Production Theory of Corporate Law, advances a dual thesis: first, that team production theory does a better job than its competitors (in particular, principal–agent theory) of explaining the advantages of the public corporation and key features of corporate law; and second, that, as a matter of corporate law, corporate boards are charged with advancing the collective interest of all the contributors to the corporate enterprise rather than the shareholders’ interests alone. Its central insight is that the role of the independent, or insulated, corporate board is to serve as a “mediating …

How A Secondary School As An Organization Defines And Embeds The Term College Readiness, Michele Critelli Jan 2015

How A Secondary School As An Organization Defines And Embeds The Term College Readiness, Michele Critelli

Theses and Dissertations

With the many reforms and initiatives regarding college readiness, understanding how organizations use rhetoric to determine and define what college readiness is and what it looks like can either reinforce dominant institutional structures and practices, or create new definitions and understanding leading to institutional change. Through a rhetorical framework (Alvesson, 1993), members of an organization are not only conformists but also strategic agents who through the use of rhetoric construct and shape knowledge and institutional life. A case study was conducted of one secondary high school that included administrators and teachers who work within the context of college readiness. Through …

Organizational Culture And Telecommuters' Quality Of Work Life And Professional Isolation, Susan J. Harrington, Julie Santiago Jan 2015

Organizational Culture And Telecommuters' Quality Of Work Life And Professional Isolation, Susan J. Harrington, Julie Santiago

Communications of the IIMA

While much has been studied and written about the adjustments managers must make when supervising remote workers in virtual work arrangements, little has been written about the potential change in the organizational culture and the effect the culture has on the virtual worker's quality of work life and professional isolation. Not only may culture affect the implementation and success of telecommuting arrangements, but the increased isolation and independence of a virtual worker may impact the culture surrounding remote workers and create an organizational subculture. This study examines the relationship between quality of work life, professional isolation, and an organization's cultural …

Knowledge Management (KM) is a key strategy which many organizations have been leveraging upon because of its potential in achieving competitive advantage. However, factors such as the national culture can impact the efficacy of this strategy. Hence, the aim of this paper is to provide insight into how Nigerian culture influences organizational culture, which in turn influences KM practices in Nigerian organizations. Based on a post-positivist stance, this research employs a descriptive survey approach for the data collection and analysis while also incorporating Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. The findings suggest that the hierarchical nature of the society in Nigeria supports centralized …

Several individuals within the firm viewed this EDI service as an opportunity for generating new revenue. However, the new system was not embraced fully by several sales and account representatives who did not view this potential product as a service that could make an adequate profit margin and translate into larger commissions. In addition, the consulting firm's president supported the project to the extent that it …

Cracking The Code Of Process Safety Culture With Organizational Network Analysis, Keith O. Hunter, Elliot M. Wolf Jan 2015

Cracking The Code Of Process Safety Culture With Organizational Network Analysis, Keith O. Hunter, Elliot M. Wolf

Organization, Leadership, and Communication

Organizations in the chemical process industry invest considerable amounts of time and resources managing change and implementing best practices to maintain safe operations and achieve operational objectives. Consequently, most executives and senior managers responsible for performance rely on formal organizational structure to achieve these objectives. However, front line employees responsible for ensuring safe operation of hazardous chemical processes are often influenced more by the informal than the formal organization in their daily activities. The dynamics of informal networks among workers are critical determinants of strong operational discipline (OD), process safety culture, and business performance. Yet, organizational social networks are often …

Blowing Up Safety Culture: The Lure And Trap Of Accident Investigation And Continuous Improvement, Harold S. Blackman

Division of Research and Economic Development Publications and Presentations

Safety culture is clearly recognized as an important element of any organization. This is of particular importance for high-risk industries where complex sociotechnical systems exist. In many industries a great deal of energy, time and money continues to be expended in trying to get the culture right. Active safety programs such as the Voluntary Protection Program, peer observation programs such as behavior-based safety, planned audits and inspections from a variety of bodies both internal and external to the organization, as well as audits by regulatory bodies are regularly employed. And when something bad happens there are standard protocols for investigating …

Perspectives On Organization Of The Marketing Function In Higher Education, Susan Tams

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The current study was initiated to assess the organization of the marketing function in institutions of higher education and to measure the perceptions of higher education marketing officials about various aspects of marketing. The study is a modified replication of a study by Michael W. Mulnix (1996) and employed the questions developed by Mulnix to measure perceptions of current practitioners. Several demographic questions were added about the respondents and their institutions. An updated study is useful because of three categories of change in higher education since 1996: a) changes in the way higher education conducts its operations; b) changes in …
