A Proposal For A Commissioned Corps Of Space Travelers, Paul F. Adams

Akron Law Review

The exploitive capabilities of the Space Shuttle include its ability to function as a reconnaissance or navigational satellite, a repair or resupply station for other satellites, or as a base station for building large structures in space. Additionally, senior officials of NASA strongly support the establishment of a permanently manned space station, of which shuttle technological capabilities would be an integral part. I As astronaut Robert Crippen said after the maiden flight of Columbia: "We are really in the space business to stay." While the new space technology is undergoing refinement and the imagination is simultaneously developing virtually unlimited uses …

Food Insecurity Challenge To Families In The Greater Chattanooga Area: The Case Of The Food Bank, Samantha K. Elliott, Irina Khmelko, Richard Beeland

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

This paper discusses food insecurity challenges to families in the Greater Chattanooga Area and factors that contribute to combating the challenge. Specifically, the paper places regional developments in a national context and analyzes the multiple roles of regional food banks in this process. Food banks have shifted focus from providing foods with sufficient caloric intake to also ensuring that they are providing food with sufficient nutritional value. We identify several factors that contribute to this change, including federal policy changes, economic fluctuations, the nutrition initiative, and organizational changes from the umbrella organization, Feeding America. This case also explores the reaction …

Leadership For Sustainability And Peace: Responding To The Wicked Challenges Of The Future, Rian Satterwhite, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Kate Sheridan

Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In the past century our understanding of leadership has changed as the contexts in which leadership occurs evolve. Today, constructs of leadership that do not incorporate emergent concepts such as systems thinking no longer match the realities of the world in which it is exercised and the challenges it seeks to address. The challenges we face as a global community have increased in complexity, size, scope, and consequence. As a result of this contextual evolution, our definition of effective leadership is evolving as well."

Applying Systems Theory As A Lens On Teacher And Student Perceptions Of Assessment And Feedback In An Intensive English Program, Thomas A. Germain

MA TESOL Collection

The goal of this project was to apply systems theory, or more generally, systems thinking as a lens on the perceptions of teachers, students, and administrators who work together at an intensive English program (IEP). This goal necessitated a two-part project: a review of pertinent literature on systems theory and a limited qualitative study situated at the IEP. Sixteen participants, including seven teachers (more than half of the current faculty), two teacher/administrators, and seven students from different levels within the program, were invited to participate. The primary focus of the study was on participants’ awareness of and attitudes about two …

Wellness As A Mitigating Factor Against Burnout For Public School Teachers, Michelle Welch Brasfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The incidence of teacher stress and burnout has been researched for many years in various geographic areas and populations. In more recent years, wellness has been proposed as a mitigating factor in reducing the incidence of burnout in the education profession. Wellness involves a holistic approach in determining the positive coping skills and practices that an individual utilizes across all life areas. Research to determine if there is a relationship between burnout and specific wellness practices may provide educational leaders with methods to assist teachers in lowering the occurrence of burnout. The professional school counselor is one educational leader who …

Cross-Check For Completeness: Exploring A Novel Use Of Leximancer In A Grounded Theory Study, Ian Harwood, Rod P. Gapp, Heather J. Stewart Jul 2015

Cross-Check For Completeness: Exploring A Novel Use Of Leximancer In A Grounded Theory Study, Ian Harwood, Rod P. Gapp, Heather J. Stewart

The Qualitative Report

This paper investigates the potential for Leximancer software to actively support the Grounded Theory (GT) analyst in assessing the “completeness” of their study. The case study takes an existing GT study and retrospectively analyzes the data with Leximancer. The Leximancer output showed encouraging similarities to the main themes emerging from the GT analysis; but not sufficiently at the selective coding level to justifiably claim a definitive cross-check for overall theoretical saturation. Whilst Leximancer is not found to be a substitute for the 'hard labor' of GT coding and theory development, it can provide a very useful, efficient and relatively impartial …

Social And Emotional Learning And Social Work In Middle School: A Case Study In Community Partnership, Anne S. Robertson, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Saras Chung, Allison Williams, Victoria May

Center for Social Development Research

Social and emotional learning is increasingly being recognized for its role in urban school reform despite current school improvement efforts focused on academic outcomes. This paper presents a case study in community partnership between a middle school, a community-based organization, and a research university, to implement a social and emotional program in seventh grade social studies. Highlighted is the importance of trust and communication among all partners—including administrators, researchers, front-line staff, teachers, and students. It also suggests a framework to expand school partnerships to include schools of social work, especially when the focus is on social and emotional learning.

Talk Matters At Work: The Effects Of Leader Member Conversational Quality And Communication Frequency On Work Role Stressors, Guowei Jian, Francis Dalisay

Communication Faculty Publications

Although it is clear that leadership plays a significant role in followers’ psychological health, the specific mechanisms by which leadership effects may take place await further theorizing and investigation. We argue that communication practices may constitute such specific mechanisms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how leader-member conversational quality (LMCQ) and communication frequency are associated with members’ perception of work role stressors. Through an online survey, the study found that LMCQ has a significant predictive effect on work role ambiguity and role overload. However, LMCQ interacts with communication frequency in their effects on role conflict. These findings …

Organizations Don’T Resist Change, People Do: Modeling Individual Reactions To Organizational Change Through Loss And Terror Management, James R. Bailey, Jonathan D. Raelin Jul 2015

Organizations Don’T Resist Change, People Do: Modeling Individual Reactions To Organizational Change Through Loss And Terror Management, James R. Bailey, Jonathan D. Raelin

Organization Management Journal

This article has three premises that stand in contrast to emphases found in contemporary organizational change research. First, examination of resistance must start with the individual. Organizations don’t resist change, people do. Second, people react not to the change per se, but to the loss it represents. Third, loss engenders a deeply rooted peril response that is largely emotional in nature. To support these premises, we apply Terror Management Theory to locate resistance in existential buffers: emotional defense mechanisms that prevent awareness of loss and allow participation in a larger meaningful system. We argue that the buffers threatened during organizational …

He Effects Of Informal Social Structures: A Cognition–Structure–Action Approach, Harry "Trip" Knoche, Gary J. Castrogiovanni Jul 2015

He Effects Of Informal Social Structures: A Cognition–Structure–Action Approach, Harry "Trip" Knoche, Gary J. Castrogiovanni

Organization Management Journal

The purpose of this article is to examine the effects of epistemic motives and social structures on individual actions and the implications for organizational outcomes. It has been suggested that the informal social structures that develop within organizations affect the behavior of individuals, perhaps more so than formal structure. If this is true, when studying organizations it may be important to examine the effects of informal social structures on individual actions and organizational outcomes. Drawing on findings from epistemic motive theory and expanding social capital theory, a cognition–structure–action model is introduced as a way to begin systematically examining the informal …

The Impact Of External Contexts On Alliance Governance In Biotech–Pharmaceutical Firm Alliances, Joanne L. Scillitoe, Shanthi Gopalakrishnan, Michael D. Santaro Jul 2015

The Impact Of External Contexts On Alliance Governance In Biotech–Pharmaceutical Firm Alliances, Joanne L. Scillitoe, Shanthi Gopalakrishnan, Michael D. Santaro

Organization Management Journal

The interest in strategic alliances has increased over the years, especially in high tech global industries such as biotechnology, as firms seek to gain access to needed resources, expertise, and knowledge for developing and commercializing new products and technologies. The governance structure of these alliances, which is an important consideration in understanding alliance formation and performance, is influenced by both external and internal contexts of the alliance partners. However, evidence from prior research has been inconclusive regarding the impact of external contexts on alliance governance selection. To better understand this impact, we simultaneously examine three key partner external contexts - …

Nursing Practice Model, Tracy L. Kasten

DNP and Student Works

For a small contemporary hospital, the need for nursing model and employee satisfaction improvement is dire for maintaining service prominence. Addressing and facilitating the immersion of a theory based self-developed nursing model into the culture and practice of a hospital based healthcare organization can facilitate the spark and serve as the catalyst for staff engagement. Uniting health improvement efforts, collaborative cohesion, and culture integration can build integrity and service excellence for this organization. This paper explores the supportive reasoning and action potential of nursing model creation influenced by nursing theory and organizational collaboration.

Partner Capture In Public International Organizations, Christopher G. Bradley Jul 2015

Partner Capture In Public International Organizations, Christopher G. Bradley

Akron Law Review

The Article unfolds in four parts.

Part I discusses the changes that public-private partnerships have wrought on the landscape of international organization funding and describes, as an example, the expanding partnership activities of the United Nations. The U.N. recently established an Office for Partnerships, which grew out of a decade of extensive contact with Ted Turner’s U.N. Foundation. The U.N.’s experience illustrates the importance partners can have, not simply on specific projects but also in bringing large-scale structural change to organizations.

Part II unpacks the concept at the heart of this Article: partner capture. Drawing on principles of bureaucratic behavior …

The Impact Of A Head Coaching Change On Intercollegiate Student-Athletes, Stacey A. Forsythe

Dissertations

The purpose of this case study was to discover the impacts on intercollegiate student-athletes subsequent to a head coaching change. One research question guided this study: What is the impact of a head coaching change on intercollegiate student-athletes? This qualitative study utilized eight case study interviews in order to achieve a rich description of the phenomenon of a head coaching change in one mid-major NCAA Division 1 institution in the Southeast. Using inductive analysis and the constant comparative method, three emergent themes were identified: (1) Student-athletes seem to accept head coaching changes, (2) Head coaches are essential to team success, …
