Reference Services To Incarcerated People, Part I: Themes Emerging From Answering Reference Questions From Prisons And Jails, Emily Drabinski, Debbie Rabina
Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications
Incarcerated people face significant information poverty, both because of limited access to information resources and because incarceration itself produces information needs that cannot be easily met. Through a content analysis of reference questions directed to the New York Public Library’s Correctional Services Program, this study articulates the particular information needs of these users. Information needs cluster around self-help and re-entry information, along with general reference queries that typically go unanswered due to the lack of access to the Internet and robust general libraries in correctional facilities. Understanding these needs offers insight for librarians and libraries seeking to better serve incarcerated …

An Examination Of Sequential And Simultaneous Behavior Change Within Two Multiple Health Behavior Change Conditions, Eva-Molly Petitto Dunbar
Open Access Master's Theses
Research on the simultaneous treatment of multiple health risk behaviors has grown in recent years in the field of multiple health behavior change. Yet there is little research on how people change behaviors that are treated simultaneously. To help predict behavior change, and, thus, to prevent chronic illness on a population level, it is necessary to advance understanding of the patterns of behavior change. The present study examined participants with multiple health risk behaviors who have changed pairs of behaviors over time. Data were analyzed from four randomized controlled trials using Transtheoretical Model (TTM) tailored interventions and comparison groups (N …

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic, progressive disease, control of which typically requires multiple therapies. Current guidelines suggest that, in addition to improving glycemic control, antihyperglycemic therapy should be chosen on the basis of its effects on body weight and the risk of hypoglycemia. The newest class of oral antihyperglycemic agents, the sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, reduces renal glucose reabsorption and increases urinary glucose excretion via an insulin-independent mechanism of action. SGLT2 inhibitors have been shown to improve glycemic control and to reduce body weight and systolic blood pressure, and their use is associated with a …

The Social Determinants Of Success: The Effect Of Status, Framing, And Group Membership On Test Scores, Jennifer L. Mcleer
Theses and Dissertations
Previous findings have shown that intelligence test scores of members of disadvantaged groups are negatively affected by their relative status in test situations. We explain this by assuming that lower-status actors forego benefits that normally follow from successful performance of a task if they anticipate that there are also costs associated with success. We use an integration of Status Characteristics Theory, Rational Choice Theory, Prospect Theory, and Self-Categorization Theory to argue that compared to high status individuals, those of lower status should be particularly affected by costs associated with high performance. We ran an experiment that manipulated factors such as …
