"The Terror Within:" Neoliberalism And The Rhetoric Of The Obesity Crisis, Anna Hensley Jan 2015

"The Terror Within:" Neoliberalism And The Rhetoric Of The Obesity Crisis, Anna Hensley

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation focuses on specific discourses within the rhetoric of the "obesity crisis" that position the fat body as a threat to U.S. military power and national identity. Since 9/11, there has been a growing rhetoric that frames obesity as a threat to national security that is weakening U.S. military forces and straining the U.S. economy through increased health care costs and lower worker productivity. Drawing on research from rhetorical studies, transnational feminism, and disability studies that highlight the way that discourses surrounding the body are used to limit access to citizenship and rhetorical agency, this research analyzes the material …

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine Of The Russian Federation, Russia Maritime Studies Institute, Anna Davis Jan 2015

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine Of The Russian Federation, Russia Maritime Studies Institute, Anna Davis

RMSI Research

The 2015 Maritime Doctrine of the Russian Federation is arguably one of the most important doctrinal statements to emerge from that country in recent years. It is in any case Russia’s most important recent articulation of its maritime interests and goals, and therefore provides insight into how Moscow envisions Russia’s global role. Yet because of the challenges of reading Russian and the absence of a publicly available translation of this essential document, western understanding of it is largely limited.

Farm To School Programs And Children's Dietary Behaviors, Kathleen Evers Jan 2015

Farm To School Programs And Children's Dietary Behaviors, Kathleen Evers

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

There is an increasing promotion of the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption through prevention efforts, specifically in school systems, to control and prevent childhood obesity. Farm to School (FTS) programs offer interactive hands on experiences involving fruits and vegetables. This study examines a specific FTS program including a farmer interaction, and a broccoli taste testing experience for kindergarten and fourth grade students in a rural Kentucky county. By using a digital still photography method of plate waste, the decisions of approximately 115 students to take/not take broccoli and percentage of students’ consumption of broccoli was analyzed. Using chi-square and …

Evaluation Of The Move Program On Weight Loss Among Veterans, William Justin Allen Jan 2015

Evaluation Of The Move Program On Weight Loss Among Veterans, William Justin Allen

DNP Projects

The most current estimations from the CDC classify more than one third of the American population as obese (2011). This epidemic continues to contribute to a number of chronic diseases across the country including diabetes and heart disease, both associated with high morbidity and mortality (NHLBI, 1998). Billions of dollars are spent annually on obesity and obesity related conditions.

Perhaps this is what led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to select Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity as a Leading Health Indicator in Healthy People 2020. The updated NHLBI guidelines, based on clinical evidence, offer a blueprint …

Evaluation Of A Rheumatology Patient Prioritization Triage System, Katharine R. Layton Jan 2015

Evaluation Of A Rheumatology Patient Prioritization Triage System, Katharine R. Layton

DNP Projects

The United States health care system is currently experiencing an increase in demand for services due to an aging population. Rheumatology, an Internal Medicine sub-specialty, treats those patients with arthritic conditions as well as other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. A shortage of rheumatologists is projected by 2025, adding additional stress to an already burdened clinical area. This means patients can face substantial wait times when requesting consultation with a rheumatology provider. This capstone project will present three manuscripts that explore the referral process from primary to specialty care and strategies to reduce wait times. The first manuscript is a literature review that …

Effects Of Particulate Matter And Antioxidant Dietary Intake On Blood Pressure, Amy J. Schulz, J. Tomothy Dvonch, Angela G. Reyes, Betty T. Izumi

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objectives—We assessed 2 pathways through which dietary antioxidants may counter adverse effects of exposure to particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) on blood pressure (BP): main (compensatory) and modifying (protective) models. Methods—We used 2002 to 2003 data from the Detroit Healthy Environments Partnership community survey conducted with a multiethnic sample of adults (n = 347) in low- to moderate-income, predominantly Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black neighborhoods in Detroit, Michigan. We used generalized estimating equations to test the effects of ambient exposure to PM2.5 and dietary antioxidant intake on BP, with adjustment for multiple confounders. Results—Dietary antioxidant intake was …

Improving Maternal And Child Health In Bangladesh: The Integration Of Midwives In Conjunction With The United Nations Millenium Development Goals Initiative, Elizabeth Casto

International ResearchScape Journal

As the United Nations Millennium Development Goals initiative comes to a close, it is important to examine what has been effective in combating disparities in developing nations. In this paper I explore the impact midwives have on improving maternal and child health in Bangladesh by focusing on how the United Nations Millennium Development Goals initiative has helped to change societal views on women and birth as midwives become more integrated into improving maternal and child health. It is a quantitative and qualitative approach analyzing the statistics of implementing midwives as these impact cost-effectiveness and change in mortality rates in addition …
