Designing U.S. Policy To Achieve Inclusive Agricultural Development And Food Systems, Marissa L. Henderson Jan 2015

Designing U.S. Policy To Achieve Inclusive Agricultural Development And Food Systems, Marissa L. Henderson

Capstone Collection

This Policy Analysis and Advocacy Methods (PAAM) course-linked capstone examines successes and failures of U.S. policy to adequately address global food insecurity and offers recommendations going forward through the use of a policy paper. President Obama called for global leaders to increase funding to agriculture at the 2009 G-8 Summit in Italy in an effort to decrease global hunger through long-term food security programs. The initial $3.5 billion President Obama pledged became the Feed the Future Initiative. The move to codify Feed the Future is currently seen in the Global Food Security Act 2015.

The U.S. approach to addressing long-term …

Helicoverpa Zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) And Spodoptera Frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Responses To Sorghum Bicolor (Poales: Poaceae) Tissues From Lowered Lignin Lines, Patrick F. Dowd, Scott E. Sattler Jan 2015

Helicoverpa Zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) And Spodoptera Frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Responses To Sorghum Bicolor (Poales: Poaceae) Tissues From Lowered Lignin Lines, Patrick F. Dowd, Scott E. Sattler

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The presence of lignin within biomass impedes the production of liquid fuels. Plants with altered lignin content and composition are more amenable to lignocellulosic conversion to ethanol and other biofuels but may be more susceptible to insect damage where lignin is an important resistance factor. However, reduced lignin lines of switchgrasses still retained insect resistance in prior studies. Therefore, we hypothesized that sorghum lines with lowered lignin content will also retain insect resistance. Sorghum excised leaves and stalk pith Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (Poales: Poaceae) from near isogenic brown midrib (bmr) 6 and 12 mutants lines, which have lowered lignin …

The Effects Of Speech Impairment On Quality Of Life Over Time In Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Jacqueline Kelley Blessinger

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Limited research exists on how speech impairments affect quality of life (QOL) factors over time in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A review of the literature, including the history, disease course, and prevalence of ALS, is presented. Physical and psychosocial functioning, especially the decline of bulbar functioning’s potential impact on QOL factors and communication style, are outlined. This study is a follow-up study on a study by Duff, who found a significant difference in QOL relative to level of bulbar functioning in a cross-sectional design. The current study used a longitudinal design to look at bulbar functioning, specifically levels …

Stability Of Transgene Expression In Reduced Allergen Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L.) Across Multiple Generations And At Different Soil Sulfur Levels, Manju Chandran, Ye Chu, Soheila J. Maleki, Peggy Ozias-Akins

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Transgenic peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) containing a gene designed for RNA interference (RNAi) showed stable complete silencing of Ara h 2 and partial silencing of Ara h 6, two potent peanut allergens/proteins, along with minimal collateral changes to other allergens, Ara h 1 and Ara h 3, across three generations (T3, T4, and T5) under field conditions. Different soil sulfur levels (0.012, 0.3, and 3.0 mM) differentially impacted sulfur-rich (Ara h 2, Ara h 3, and Ara h 6) versus sulfur-poor (Ara h 1) proteins in non-transgenic versus transgenic peanut. The sulfur level …

Dietary Supplements Are Not All Safe And Not All Food: How The Low Cost Of Dietary Supplements Preys On The Consumer, Joanna K. Sax Jan 2015

Dietary Supplements Are Not All Safe And Not All Food: How The Low Cost Of Dietary Supplements Preys On The Consumer, Joanna K. Sax

Faculty Scholarship

Dietary supplements are regulated as food, even though the safety and efficacy of some supplements are unknown. These products are often promoted as 'natural.' This leads many consumers to fail to question the supplements' safety, and some consumers even equate 'natural' with safe. But, 'natural' does not mean safe. For example, many wild berries and mushrooms are dangerous although they are natural. Another example is tobacco -- a key ingredient in cigarettes: it is natural, but overwhelming studies have established the harm of cigarette smoke. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only has limited ability to regulate the entry of …

A Case Study Of The Conflicts Women Experience With Tourism And Immigration In Vilcabamba, Ecuador: A Sustainable Livelihoods Perspective, Fatima A. Cotton

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

This research is situated in the community of Vilcabamba in the province of Loja, Ecuador. Vilcabamba is a small village in the southern Andes of Ecuador, approximately 28 miles (45km) from Loja city. Many people were drawn to the area because of stories they heard about people there living to be over 100 years old. Books and articles have been written in attempts to establish the veracity of these claims and to explore why the people of Vilcabamba are living so long. This dissertation is a qualitative case study that explores how the recent surge of tourism and immigration in …

Categories Of Exclusion: The Transformation Of Formerly Incarcerated Women Into “Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents” In Welfare Processing, Megan Welsh Jan 2015

Categories Of Exclusion: The Transformation Of Formerly Incarcerated Women Into “Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents” In Welfare Processing, Megan Welsh

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

For people who have just been released from incarceration, the work of getting out and resuming life on the outside often includes numerous institutional contacts. Applying for and maintaining public assistance—cash aid and food stamps, commonly referred to as welfare— is a central component of what I call “reentry work.” I argue that discourses around welfare and punishment have perpetuated the erasure of formerly incarcerated women’s experiences. Utilizing an institutional ethnographic perspective, I show how the work of applying for and maintaining welfare is organized around a standardized textual discourse of children, and women as caretakers of children. Formerly incarcerated …

Who's Left Out: Characteristics Of Households In Economic Need Not Receiving Public Support, Vincent A. Fusaro

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The American welfare state is often referred to as a social safety net, yet many in economic need do not receive public benefits. This article examines the characteristics of low-income households in the United States that do not participate in any of several public cash or near-cash support programs. Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) 2008 panel—a representative sample of U.S. households—households below the federal poverty threshold but not participating in any of eleven different income support programs were identified. Over a third (38.02%) of households in poverty did not receive any assistance from the examined programs. …

Implications include expansion of …

Can People Experiencing Homelessness Acquire Financial Assets?, Allison De Marco, Molly De Marco, Alexandra Biggers, Maggie West, Jonathan Young, Rachel Levy Jan 2015

Can People Experiencing Homelessness Acquire Financial Assets?, Allison De Marco, Molly De Marco, Alexandra Biggers, Maggie West, Jonathan Young, Rachel Levy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Through an innovative Individual Development Account (IDA) program run by the Community Empowerment Fund (CEF), individuals at risk for or experiencing homelessness receive financial education, access matched savings accounts, and have saved a total of $89,831.55. This is notable as low-income individuals often lack access to the means to build assets, which can moderate financial distress. In this mixed-method study we examine the program's impact through administrative data, surveys, and qualitative interviews. Of the 17 interview participants, 15 opened an account, saving an average of $1,356.24 toward housing, emergency savings, cars, education, and computers. Few U.S. IDA programs have served …

The Effects Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen Fertilization On Tall Fescue Nutrient Content, Yield And Baleage Quality, Cheyenne Adele Arthur Jan 2015

The Effects Of Phosphorus And Nitrogen Fertilization On Tall Fescue Nutrient Content, Yield And Baleage Quality, Cheyenne Adele Arthur

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a cool season perennial grass commonly used in year-round forage production systems. Producers often wrap large round bales of tall fescue in plastic. The fermented product of this practice, termed baleage, allows the forage to be stored for later feeding. During periods of rapid growth in the spring and the fall, the nutrient content of tall fescue can be imbalanced and cause nutritional disorders in grazing animals. To improve the nutrition of tall fescue, it is known that fertilization of phosphorus (P) can help improve leaf nutrient content of P, magnesium (Mg), and calcium …

Environmental Privacy, Katrina Fischer Kuh Jan 2015

Environmental Privacy, Katrina Fischer Kuh

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article looks to nuisance doctrine, surveillance under environmental statutes, and Fourth Amendment cases arising in implementation of fish and game laws (the hunter enforcement cases) to better understand our experience, to date, balancing the need for environmental information with privacy. Section A analyzes common law nuisance and its relationship to individual privacy concerns and concludes that the law affords little *7 value to or protection of privacy in the context of at least one type of environmental externality -- conduct that gives rise to a common law nuisance. Recognizing that most environmentally significant individual behaviors do not constitute a …

Beyond Cheneyism And Snowdenism, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2015

Beyond Cheneyism And Snowdenism, Cass R. Sunstein

University of Chicago Law Review

In the domain of national security, many people favor some kind of precautionary principle, insisting that it is far better to be safe than sorry and contending that a range of important safeguards, including widespread surveillance, is amply justified to prevent the loss of life. Those who object to the resulting initiatives, and in particular to widespread surveillance, respond with a precautionary principle of their own, seeking safeguards against what they see as unacceptable risks to privacy and liberty. The problem is that, as in the environmental context, a precautionary principle threatens to create an unduly narrow viewscreen, focusing people …

Des RetombéEs De La DéClaration De 1789 À Saint-Domingue À La Fin Du Dix-HuitièMe SièCle, Rony Romain

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

French treatment of slaves in Saint-Domingue at the end of the eighteenth century constituted one of the worst human rights abuses in history. French farmers brought hundreds of thousands of slaves from Africa to the wealthy Caribbean island. They courageously endured the misery of slavery until they found the path to liberty in 1804, the culmination of major slave revolts that had begun in 1791. This research demonstrates that French farmers presence in Saint-Domingue was not the main issue that affected the social stability of the colony; it was their unwillingness to respect African workers’ rights after the pronouncement of …

Millennial Consumer Preference: Waffle Fries Vs. Potato Wedges, Emily Rogers

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

For this experiment, two groups of paid volunteers, aged 18-34, provided written quantitative and qualitative data on preferences between waffle fries (test) and potato wedges (control). Each participant provided demographic information and then answered a series of questions, using a hedonic rating scale or by composing a written response. Participants also provided qualitative data about what influenced their preference between the test and control. The experiment confirmed the hypothesis was correct: Millennials prefer waffle fries over potato wedges. It also confirms that Millennials prefer a unique, crunchy, crispy, and decreased potato filled product. Millennial consumers reported significant preference of the …

Impact Of Welfare Participation During Childhood On Adult Income, Curran A. Prettyman Jan 2015

Impact Of Welfare Participation During Childhood On Adult Income, Curran A. Prettyman

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

This paper analyzes the impact of welfare participation during childhood on adult income. In the United States, welfare programs have a long history originating from the 1800s, and over $20 billion are currently allocated to various anti-poverty programs, such as Aid to Families with Dependent Children and Supplemental Security Income. Many people believe that these programs effectively eradicate childhood poverty. However, ordinary least squares and instrumental variables regression models suggest welfare programs are counterproductive. On average, holding all else constant, with 95% confidence, the total dollar amount of funding received from welfare programs during childhood is statistically significant to a …

Two corn plots (short season, 102-day, and normal season, 111-day corn) were serially harvested to evaluate nutrient, digestibility, and yield change over the duration from half-milk line through black layer. Digestibility of the corn plant decreased as corn plant maturity and NDF content increased. The lower leaf in the normal season plot decreased in digestibility, but did not change in the short season plot. Little change was observed in the digestibility of the internodes across time. The NDF content of the upper plant increased in both plots. The internodes increased in NDF content across time in both plots. The results …

Effects Of Dietary Fat Source And Monensin On Methane Emissions, Vfa Profile, And Performance Of Finishing Steers, Anna C. Pesta, Andrea K. Watson, Robert G. Bondurant Bondurant, Samodha C. Fernando, Galen E. Erickson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A finishing study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary fat source and presence or absence of monensin on performance, methane (CH4) emissions, and ruminal VFA profile of cattle. No effects on performance or VFA profile were observed. Inclusion of modified distillers grain plus solubles (MDGS) in the diet tended to increase measures of CH4 production when compared to other fat sources (corn oil or tallow), while inclusion of monensin in the finishing diet was not significant for CH4 production.

Evaluation Of Changes In Nutritional Quality Of Corn Residue Over Time, Mandi Jones, James C. Macdonald, Terry J. Klopfenstein Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Keith Glewen, Andrea K. Watson

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Irrigated corn residue was sampled across time in order to determine changes in quality and proportion of corn residue as the plant dried and was exposed to effects of weathering. Corn plants from two hybrids were planted on two different planting dates and harvested at periodic intervals from August 2012 to December 2012. Proportions of stem, blade/sheath, husk/shank, and cob made up smaller components of total plant DM as it matured, with the largest relative reduction occurring in the blade/sheath or stem. Hybrid impacted TDN values primarily because the 119 day hybrid was less mature at the early sampling dates.
