Outdoor Adventure Therapy To Increase Physical Activity In Young Adult Cancer Survivors, Elizabeth C. Gill, Suzanne Phelan, Marni Goldenberg, Heather Starnes
Master's Theses
Physical activity (PA) has numerous benefits for cancer survivors, but limited research exists on PA interventions in young adult cancer survivors. Outdoor adventure therapy is a potential method of increasing PA in this demographic. The primary purpose of this non-randomized parallel group study was to determine whether the outdoor adventure camp experience (vs. wait list control) would increase participants’ PA levels immediately following the 7-day camp, as well as three months later. Secondary aims examined correlates of greater PA, including pre-post camp changes in sedentary behavior, exercise self-efficacy, environmental change self-efficacy, perceived barriers to exercise, physical activity enjoyment, and physical …
Experimental Execution, Seema K. Shah
Experimental Execution, Seema K. Shah
Washington Law Review
On July 23, 2014, an execution in Arizona lasted nearly two hours, with the inmate struggling to breathe and gasping over 600 times, according to a local reporter witnessing the execution. This was the third example of a botched execution in seven months. The Supreme Court last evaluated the constitutionality of execution by lethal injection in 2008, but did not provide a clear standard for evaluating risks. Since that time, the lethal injection landscape has transformed. States are using entirely new drugs and drug combinations, and sometimes obtain these drugs from questionable sources, making it hard to predict what will …

Geographic And Ontogenetic Variation Of Venom In The Rattlesnakes Crotalus Oreganus Oreganus And Crotalus O. Helleri, Eric Conrad Kyle Gren
Geographic And Ontogenetic Variation Of Venom In The Rattlesnakes Crotalus Oreganus Oreganus And Crotalus O. Helleri, Eric Conrad Kyle Gren
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
I investigated the extent of variation of venom protein composition (venome) and neurotoxicity in the Northern Pacific (Crotalus oreganus oreganus) and Southern Pacific (C. o. helleri) rattlesnakes, with special emphasis on geographic variation across the species’ California range. In the first of three empirical studies, I used reversed-phase liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to examine the venome of four C. o. helleri populations. Substantial geographic variation existed, with small basic peptides (myotoxic β-defensins) expressed in large amounts by all populations, metalloproteinases abundant in two populations but only moderate and trace amounts in the other two populations, and a potent presynaptic …
Bioaugmentation Of Overloaded Anaerobic Digesters Restores Function And Archaeal Community, Vaibhav Panjabrao Tale, James Maki, Daniel Zitomer
Bioaugmentation Of Overloaded Anaerobic Digesters Restores Function And Archaeal Community, Vaibhav Panjabrao Tale, James Maki, Daniel Zitomer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Adding beneficial microorganisms to anaerobic digesters for improved performance (i.e. bioaugmentation) has been shown to decrease recovery time after organic overload or toxicity upset. Compared to strictly anaerobic cultures, adding aerotolerant methanogenic cultures may be more practical since they exhibit higher methanogenic activity and can be easily dried and stored in ambient air for future shipping and use. In this study, anaerobic digesters were bioaugmented with both anaerobic and aerated, methanogenic propionate enrichment cultures after a transient organic overload. Digesters bioaugmented with anaerobic and moderately aerated cultures recovered 25 and 100 days before non-bioaugmented digesters, respectively. Increased methane production due …

Perceived Barriers To Utilizing Maternal And Neonatal Health Services In Contracted-Out Versus Government-Managed Health Facilities In The Rural Districts Of Pakistan, Atif Riaz, Shehla Zaidi, Asif Raza Khowaja
Community Health Sciences
Background: A number of developing countries have contracted out public health facilities to the Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in order to improve service utilization. However, there is a paucity of in-depth qualitative information on barriers to access services as a result of contracting from service users’ perspective. The objective of this study was to explore perceived barriers to utilizing Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) services, in health facilities contracted out by government to NGO for service provision versus in those which are managed by government (non-contracted).
Methods: A community-based qualitative exploratory study was conducted between April to September 2012 at two …

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Tuberculosis of central nervous system is not uncommon in children of developing countries. Tuberculomaswere initially misdiagnosed due to lack of radiological expertise, un availability of CT scans and MRI. For early diagnosis and treatment, they should be kept in differential of space occupying lesions. We had a 2 ½ years old patient had fever, squint, aphasia and loss of motor milestones. On examination he was a malnourished child with right sided hypertonia and involvement of 9th and 10th cranial nerves with hepatospleenomegaly. His CRP was raised and CXRshowed B/L milliary shadowing which helped us to find out the primary focus leading …

Regulatory Flexibilities And Tensions In Public Health And Trade: An Asian Perspective, Locknie Hsu
Regulatory Flexibilities And Tensions In Public Health And Trade: An Asian Perspective, Locknie Hsu
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Regulatory issues relating to public health are a source of tensions in recent trade and investment negotiations, treaties and disputes. Issues arising from the intersection between public health regulation and trade and investment treaties have given Asian states pause for thought. They have led to a critical need to confront the scope and meaning of legal obligations vis-a-vis public health and regulatory objectives, and their implications for stakeholder interests. The intersection and resulting tensions have already led the WTO, WHO and WIPO to work together in an unprecedented manner to address some of the issues at the global level. The …

Teaching Culture Using E-Portfoliosin A 4th-Semester University Spanish Classroom, Ricardo Gustavo Cetz
Theses and Dissertations
The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (ACTFL, 2014) encourage teachers to help their students use the target language to “investigate, explain, and reflect” on the relationships between cultural products, practices, and perspectives. However, while most language instructors agree that language and culture should be connected, many fail to teach culture explicitly because they are so focused on the language components of their courses. Of those who do teach culture explicitly, many either teach only about the cultural products and not the perspectives, or they teach the culture in English because of its complexity. This project explores the use of e-portfolios …

Diabetes mellitus is well known to cause bladder dysfunction; however, the molecular mechanisms governing this process and the effects on individual tissue elements within the bladder are poorly understood, particularly in type 2 diabetes. A shotgun proteomics approach was applied to identify proteins differentially expressed between type 2 diabetic (TallyHo) and control (SWR/J) mice in the bladder smooth muscle and urothelium, separately. We were able to identify 1760 nonredundant proteins from the detrusor smooth muscle and 3169 nonredundant proteins from urothelium. Pathway and network analysis of significantly dysregulated proteins was conducted to investigate the molecular processes associated with diabetes. This …

Variation in the quantity of nutrients ingested over an individual’s lifetime is likely to differentially affect distinct male secondary sexual traits and courtship signals, potentially providing females with information about a male’s past and present foraging history. We hypothesize that female choice is thus influenced by a male’s lifetime foraging history. To test this, we manipulated the quantity of nutrients (i.e. prey items) available to male wolf spiders, Schizocosa stridulans, using a fully crossed 2 × 2 design with low versus high prey quantity across juvenile and adult life stages, and assessed the impact of these diet treatments on male …

Increasing Expression Of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen In Maize Through Breeding, Erin Suzanne Miller
Increasing Expression Of Hepatitis B Surface Antigen In Maize Through Breeding, Erin Suzanne Miller
Master's Theses
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a common virus, with two billion people infected worldwide. It causes approximately 600,000 deaths each year, despite the availability of an effective vaccine since 1982. Maize as a platform for oral vaccination can supply a heat stable vaccine, which does not require syringes or trained personnel to administer. The Hepatitis B Surface antigen was transformed into maize and this seed was used to evaluate expression levels through the breeding process. The transgene was transferred into two elite maize inbreds by backcrossing. Highest expressing ears were selected each generation until approximately 99% commercial parent was …
