Associations Between Physical Activity And Weight Status With Grade-School Performance, Taylor Panfil Mar 2015

Associations Between Physical Activity And Weight Status With Grade-School Performance, Taylor Panfil

Theses and Dissertations

Physical activity and weight control are predictive of childhood health, but more recent research suggests they may also be associated with academic success.

PURPOSE: To explore the relationships between physical activity, weight status, and academic performance in children.

METHODS: 614 third-to-fifth grade children (53.9% female, age 9.6 ± 0.9 years) from two Midwestern communities participated. Physical activity was assessed using a Digiwalker 200-SW pedometer worn for seven consecutive days. Teachers provided an estimate of general academic performance, and children were categorized into three performance groups (high, moderate, low). School behavior (attentiveness, staying on task, interruptive behavior) was assessed by the …

Isolation And Identification Of An Extracellular Subtilisin-Like Serine Protease Secreted By The Bat Pathogen Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Evan L. Pannkuk, Thomas S. Risch, Brett J. Savary

KIP Articles

White nose syndrome (WNS) is a cutaneous fungal disease of bats. WNS is responsible for unprecedented mortalities in North American cave bat populations. There have been few descriptions of enzyme activities that may function in WNS host/pathogen interactions, while no study has isolated and described secreted proteases. To address the hypothesis that Pseudogymnoascus destructans secretes extracellular proteases that function in wing necrosis during WNS infection, the object of this study was to culture P. destructans on various media, then isolate and structurally identify those proteases accumulated stably in the culture medium. We found a single dominant protease activity on minimal …

Aging occurs over time with gradual and progressive loss of physiological function. Strategies to reduce the rate of functional loss and mitigate the subsequent onset of deadly age-related diseases are being sought. We demonstrated previously that a combination of rapamycin and myriocin reduces age-related functional loss in the Baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and produces a synergistic increase in lifespan. Here we show that the same drug combination also produces a synergistic increase in the lifespan of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe and does so by controlling signal transduction pathways conserved across a wide evolutionary time span ranging from yeasts to …

Role Of Microbial Fermentation On Degradation Of Folic Acid In Micronutrient Fortified Corn Masa Prior To Baking, Chad Hancock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Evaluation of how well the academic objectives of the proposal were met This was an intensive project, which turned out to be a great opportunity for our students. We had one graduate student and four to five undergraduate students working on it at any given time. Due to attrition in the lab, we had about 16 undergraduates who were involved across the course of the entire project. Students learned the nuances of a very challenging multi-day, microbial assay for folic acid, and also learned many other laboratory skills and became quite proficient in microbial enumeration and isolation. The importance of …

Direct Detection Of Fungal Siderophores On Bats With White-Nose Syndrome Via Fluorescence Microscopy-Guided Ambient Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Samantha J. Mascuch, Wilna J. Moree, Cheng-Chih Hsu

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS) caused by the pathogenic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans is decimating the populations of several hibernating North American bat species. Little is known about the molecular interplay between pathogen and host in this disease. Fluorescence microscopy ambient ionization mass spectrometry was used to generate metabolic profiles from the wings of both healthy and diseased bats of the genus Myotis. Fungal siderophores, molecules that scavenge iron from the environment, were detected on the wings of bats with WNS, but not on healthy bats. This work is among the first examples in which microbial molecules are directly detected from an infected …

Integrating Experiential Learning Into Animal Science Curriculum Through A Hands-On Beef Cattle Management And Marketing Contest, Corinne J. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

According to the Illinois Agricultural Education, nearly 61% of students beginning their undergraduate studies in Agriculture at a 2-year college in Illinois come from non-farm backgrounds. Yet, knowledge of and experience in livestock operations is still a requirement for many careers in the animal science industry. In response to this predicament, the Department of Agriculture at Illinois State University has implemented a course that provides students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with beef cattle management and marketing. The course was designed to enhance learning by requiring students to develop and execute a management and marketing plan for a pen …

Household Demography And Early Childhood Mortality In A Rice-Farming Village In Northern Laos, Shinsuke Tomita, Daniel M. Parker, Julia Jennings, James Wood

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

This paper extends Alexandr Chayanov’s model of changing household demography (specifically the ratio of food consumers to food producers) and its influence on agricultural behavior so that it includes possible adverse effects of a rising ratio on nutritional status and early childhood mortality within the household. We apply the model to 35 years’ worth of longitudinal demographic and economic data collected in the irrigated-rice growing village of Na Savang in northern Laos. When appropriate controls are included for other household variables, unobserved inter-household heterogeneity, and changes in local conditions and national policy over the study period, the analysis suggests that …

Improving Provider Identification And Management Of Overweight And Obesity In Primary Care, Sarah F. Knoeckel

Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Overweight and obesity are in epidemic proportions in the United States. This is alarming given that obesity is a risk factor for many secondary health conditions. Primary care providers (PCPs) are responsible for weight management interventions in clinical settings, yet obesity treatment guidelines are infrequently applied in practice. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine PCPs’ attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors as they relate to overweight and obesity guidelines in light of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Methods: A randomized controlled trial design was used. Participants included PCPs that care for adult patients employed at a federally …

A Cost-Reducing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (Ecmo) Program Model: A Single Institution Experience., Nicholas C. Cavarocchi, S Wallace, E Y. Hong, A Tropea, J Byrne, Harrsion Pitcher, Hitoshi Hirose

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The worldwide demand for ECMO support has grown. Its provision remains limited due to several factors (high cost, complicated technology, lack of expertise) that increase healthcare cost. Our goal was to assess if an intensive care unit (ICU)-run ECMO model without continuous bedside perfusionists would decrease costs while maintaining patient safety and outcomes.

METHOD: A new ECMO program was implemented in 2010, consisting of dedicated ICU multidisciplinary providers (ICU-registered nurses, mid-level providers and intensivists). In year one, we introduced an education platform, new technology and dedicated space. In year two, continuous bedside monitoring by perfusionists was removed and new …

Applying Gps And Accelerometers To The Study Of African Savanna (Loxodonta Africana) And Asian Elephant (Elephas Maximus) Welfare In Zoos, Matthew Robert Holdgate Mar 2015

Applying Gps And Accelerometers To The Study Of African Savanna (Loxodonta Africana) And Asian Elephant (Elephas Maximus) Welfare In Zoos, Matthew Robert Holdgate

Dissertations and Theses

African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) and Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are a focus of welfare research in zoos due to their high intelligence, complex social structure, and sheer size. Due to these challenges, some argue that zoos are inherently incapable of providing appropriate care for elephants, while others believe that zoos can fulfill the needs of these species with improved husbandry. There is a general consensus from both within and outside of zoos, however, that zoos must improve their elephant programs or cease exhibiting these animals altogether. Now more than ever, applied research on zoo elephant welfare is needed to …

Puppets On A String? How Young Adolescents Explore Gender And Health In Advertising, Deborah L. Begoray, Elizabeth M. Banister, Joan Wharf Higgins, Robin Wilmot

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article presents qualitative research on young adolescents’ abilities in communicating and evaluating health messages in advertising especially how they understand and create gendered identities. A group of grade 6-8 students learned about media techniques and movie making. In groups divided by gender, they created iMovie advertisements for health activities in their school. They represented themselves in these advertisements by creating stick puppets. Observations during lessons, examination of movies and puppets, and interviews with students and their teacher revealed that young adolescents were neither completely manipulated by media nor were they completely in charge of their responses to media’s messages …
