The Role Of Music In The Enhancement Of Marketing, Kaitlyn V. Neese Apr 2015

The Role Of Music In The Enhancement Of Marketing, Kaitlyn V. Neese

Senior Honors Theses

Marketers use thousands of techniques in order to create the ideal brand image for products and services. There is no detail left unconsidered at the end of a marketing proposal. Everything from the font on a package to the actor used in commercials is extremely thought-out because marketers are not trying to sell a product; they are trying to sell a brand. Because of this, music is becoming increasingly important in marketing decisions. The types of music playing in a store, on a commercial, on a website, or at a worksite can all effect the image of a product, and …

Impact Of Westernization On Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 Levels Among Individuals Of African Ancestry, Karl Eckberg, Holly Kramer, Myles Wolf, Ramon Durazo-Arvizu, Bamidele Tayo, Amy Luke, Richard Cooper

Faculty Publications

IntroductionThe Western diet is associated with high consumption of processed foods preserved with phosphate. Higher dietary phosphate consumption stimulates production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which heightens risk for cardiovascular disease and mortality. We hypothesized that adults living in a more westernized society have higher levels of FGF23 due to increased phosphate consumption as measured by urinary phosphate excretion. MethodsWe measured plasma C-terminal FGF23 levels and urinary phosphate and creatinine levels in timed urine collections among 100 African adults living in the rural area of Igbo-Ora, Nigeria (52 women, 48 men), and 100 African Americans (32 women, 68 men) …

There is ample evidence that the ubiquitin-proteasome system is an important regulator of transcription and its activity is necessary for maintaining pluripotency and promoting cellular reprogramming. Moreover, proteasome activity contributes to maintaining the open chromatin structure found in pluripotent stem cells, acting as a transcriptional inhibitor at specific gene loci generally associated with differentiation. The current study was designed to understand further the role of proteasome inhibition in reprogramming and its ability to modulate endogenous expression of pluripotency-related genes and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) colony formation. Herein, we demonstrate that acute combinatorial treatment with the proteasome inhibitors MG101 or …

Expenditure Management In The Public Distribution System, Charan Singh, Anushi Shah, Myanka Aggarwal, Padmakumar Nair, Ritanshu Kashyap, Shamil Mohamed, Shomrita Pal

Working Papers

Food subsidy is a significant part of the cost incurred by the national exchequer. The Public Distribution System (PDS) has been long criticised for its inefficient track record with enormous leakages. This is a significant loss to the country. One of the main reasons for existence of leakages in the PDS system is the price differential that exists between market prices of food grains and the price at which it is sold at PDS. Additionally, the PDS has also faced criticism in recent years with regardsto the quality of food distributed through them, transparency in the distribution network, and lack …

Genetic Analysis Of Tocochromanol Variation In Maize Using High-Density Linkage Mapping, Megan E. Fenton

Open Access Theses

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient in the human diet and refers to eight distinct compounds that are collectively known as tocochromanols. Tocochromanols are grouped into two classes: tocotrienols and tocopherols. Tocochromanols are the major lipid-soluble antioxidants in maize (Zea mays L.) grain. Enhancing the tocochromanol content of maize derived foods through plant breeding has important nutritional and health implications. Chapter one is a literature review that provides a foundational understanding of the biosynthesis, function and genetic control of tocochromanols in plants, with specific attention to maize (Zea mays L.). Upon this foundation two research objectives were developed that work …

An Analysis Of Techniques For Obtaining Speedup In Software Solutions For Proteomics, Urmi N. Bhayani Apr 2015

An Analysis Of Techniques For Obtaining Speedup In Software Solutions For Proteomics, Urmi N. Bhayani

Open Access Theses

Proteomics is the study of the structure and behavior of proteins. In order to perform this kind of an analysis, proteins are broken down into their constituent peptides, and values of different parameters are recorded. The amount of this kind of data collected is very large, and therefore analysis of this data becomes time-consuming. To overcome this issue, there have been several software developed for processing protein data. With a large number of software solutions available in the market, the decision about which one to use is hard for the end-user. The expectations from such a software for each user …

The Effect Of Biochar On The Growth Of Agricultural Weed Species, Karen Anne Mitchell Apr 2015

The Effect Of Biochar On The Growth Of Agricultural Weed Species, Karen Anne Mitchell

Open Access Theses

Biochar, a carbon-rich residue similar to charcoal, has been proposed as a soil amendment to improve soil quality and increase crop yields while simultaneously mitigating climate change by the sequestration of carbon. The beneficial effect of biochar on crops may extend to weed species and, although it is well known that weeds reduce crop yields, there is little published research on the effect of biochar on agricultural weed species. In a series of greenhouse and growth chamber experiments, three questions were addressed. First, how does nitrogen interact with biochar produced from a single feedstock to affect weeds? Second, how do …

Effect Of Salts On The Structure-Function Relationships Of Sodium Kappa-Carrageenan, Lohit Myneedu Apr 2015

Effect Of Salts On The Structure-Function Relationships Of Sodium Kappa-Carrageenan, Lohit Myneedu

Open Access Theses

Carrageenans are sulfated marine polysaccharides used in a wide variety of food applications such as bodying, gelling, thickening and emulsion stabilization in water- and milk-based systems. They also find promising pharmaceutical usage due to antiinflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-coagulant activities, to name a few. Among them, kappa-carrageenan is favored owing to its desirable properties such as high gel strength and stability. Though the significance of cations on the structure-function relationships is well-documented, the role of anions is still elusive. This investigation aims at providing the pertinent details, especially in the presence of halide ions such as Cl-, Br- and I-. In …

Baylisascaris Spp. In Non-Raccoon Procyonid Hosts And Assessment Of Potential Risk Of Human Exposure, Max Carlin Parkanzky

Open Access Theses

Baylisascaris procyonis (Bp) is a large roundworm of the common raccoon (Procyon lotor) which serves as the definitive host. Bp is an important cause of clinical larva migrans, including severe neurological disease, across numerous taxa including humans. Other procyonids, as well as occasionally dogs, can act as definitive hosts for this or other Baylisascaris spp. Many of these animals are becoming more common as household pets, posing a risk to people who come in contact with these animals. We have investigated whether patent Baylisascaris spp. infection exists in captive non-raccoon procyonids and if humans who contact these animals …

Eco-Evolutionary Factors Drive Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles, Which Intercept Plant Defense, Elizabeth K. Rowen Apr 2015

Eco-Evolutionary Factors Drive Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles, Which Intercept Plant Defense, Elizabeth K. Rowen

Open Access Theses

Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) mediate a wide variety of interactions in ecosystems. However, many volatile compounds are found across plant taxa, and some are exploited to attract natural enemies for biological control. Subtle changes in HIPV blends can produce profound changes in the behavior of predators, parasitoids and herbivores, and may also alter the defensive processes of neighboring plants. I investigated different ecological and evolutionary factors to understand how plant volatile emissions are affected by feeding guild, herbivore diet breadth and domestication. I meta-analyzed 109 studies and found that specialists induce more total volatiles than generalists. Domesticated species have stronger …

Persistence And Internalization Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Romaine Lettuce, Lactuca Sativa Var. Longifolia, Archana G. Shenoy

Open Access Theses

Listeria monocytogenes, has been implicated in a number of outbreaks involving fresh produce. While no L. monocytogenes outbreaks have been linked to romaine lettuce, the number of lettuce recalls specific to L. monocytogenes is increasing. Understanding the potential of persistence and internalization of L. monocytogenes on and within romaine lettuce will aid in determining food safety risk. Persistence of three L. monocytogenes strains on three romaine lettuce cultivars was assessed independently by inoculating seeds in 25 ml of 8 log CFU/ml for 30 minutes. Seeds were grown on two soil types (i.e. standard potting mix, Indiana top soil) or sterile …

Growth Parameters Of 'Golden Delicious' Apple Trees (Malus X Domestica Borkh), Biying Shi

Open Access Theses

High yield and high quality of tree fruit result from appropriate orchard design and management practices. This requires an accurate knowledge of vegetative growth, branching, and flowering processes of fruit trees. Tree development knowledge is the fundamental information necessary to build functional-structural tree models, which have various applications in agriculture. To build such models, information is needed on the distributions of growth parameters, not merely means as are often reported. The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze shoot development and examine the correlations between fruit quality and light distribution in apple trees. This study was conducted in 2014, …

German cockroaches (Blattella germanica (L.)) are important urban pests that adversely impact human health. Previous studies indicated that ozone technology (ozone gas) can be used as a management tool to control insect pests in grain storage facilities, stored foods and some finished products. The goal of my study was to broaden the applicability of ozone from traditional stored grain pests to B. germanica. The first part of my study determined the concentration-time (CT) relationship of ozone required to achieve 100% mortality in various life stages (adults, nymphs and eggs) ofB. germanica. Results showed that eggs were the most ozone-tolerant …

Attitudes Toward A Cancer Coalition: Implications For Coalition Health Communication, Chervin Lam Shih Kian Apr 2015

Attitudes Toward A Cancer Coalition: Implications For Coalition Health Communication, Chervin Lam Shih Kian

Open Access Theses

A cancer coalition is a communication hub for cancer patients that may help address cancer by promoting health and mitigating health issues. Attitudes toward a cancer coalition may be important in determining whether or not patients participate or utilize a coalition. However, little is known about the attitudes of cancer patients toward a cancer coalition, its services, and toward participation. This study addresses this gap by investigating these attitudes. The results encourage the development of a cancer coalition in states that do not yet have a coalition. Effective coalition health communication was found to be a pivotal service that cancer …

The Bone-Protective Effect And Mechanism Of Soluble Corn Fiber, Steven A. Jakeman Apr 2015

The Bone-Protective Effect And Mechanism Of Soluble Corn Fiber, Steven A. Jakeman

Open Access Theses

Postmenopausal women are at greatest risk among healthy individuals of developing osteoporosis and associated fractures. Nondigestible, fermentable dietary carbohydrates have been shown to improve calcium absorption in adolescents and bone-strength parameters in the rat model. Of particular interest is soluble corn fiber (SCF), which improved rat bone strength the most in a survey of novel fibers, and improved calcium absorption by up to 13% in teen girls. Hypotheses about the mechanism behind this effect revolve around the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the large intestine during fermentation. The purpose of this work was to determine if SCF would …

Male And Female Interaction In Apple: Pollen Tube Growth, Fruit Set, Fruit Quality, And Return Bloom, Khalil Rahman Jahed

Open Access Theses

In apple, adequate and appropriate pollination and fertilization is required for fruit set, fruit quality and subsequent fruit growth. Pollen source, pollen-style interaction and compatibility, and ample pollen tube growth are potentially highly influential factors on the fertilization and fruit setting process. Pollinizer is considered to be one of the influential factors and has a remarkable impact on fertilization. However, basic information on the level of pollinizer compatibility and its contribution to yield is lacking for many commercial apple cultivars. Hence, we conducted these experiments to compare pollinizers in terms of pollen tube growth, fruit set, fruit quality and return …
