La República Dominicana: Las Terrenas, Stefanie M. Havemeier Apr 2015

La República Dominicana: Las Terrenas, Stefanie M. Havemeier

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Off the sandy beaches of Las Terrenas, The Dominican Republic, lies La Fundación Mahatma Gandhi and an energetic, ambitious, kind-hearted, and humble man, José Bourget, founder of the foundation. With the help of Bourget, six interns from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University lead summer camps at the foundation and in a nearby neighborhood. Children picked up trash, learned about dental hygiene, participated in new games, banged on musical instruments, and shouted out their favorite foods while learning about nutrition. The children in Las Terrenas and neighboring communities enjoyed summer camp activities but what the interns of …

Food Addiction And Added Sugar Consumption In College-Aged Females, Sophia F. Stangl Apr 2015

Food Addiction And Added Sugar Consumption In College-Aged Females, Sophia F. Stangl

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Addiction to highly refined foods, specifically sugar, may result in excessive caloric intake, which enhances comorbidity risks, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that women limit “added sugar” intake to 25 g per day (1). Purpose: To determine the relationship between food addiction and sugar consumption. Methods: IRB approved the study, and IT Services sent out a recruitment email to 1992 college-aged females. Participants gave their informed consent and completed two surveys: the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) (n=160) and the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour dietary recall (ASA24) (n=57). The YFAS questionnaire categorized individuals …

An Analysis Of Bacterial Contamination Of Chicken Eggs And Antimicrobial Resistance, Holly Spitzer Apr 2015

An Analysis Of Bacterial Contamination Of Chicken Eggs And Antimicrobial Resistance, Holly Spitzer

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Chicken eggs are a major component of American diets, with an average yearly consumption of approximately 250 eggs per person (according to estimates made by the American Humane Society). While highly nutritious, eggs are also one of the leading causes of food poisoning and food borne illness in the United States. Eggs may become contaminated by a number of different types of bacteria during production, including Salmonella, a group of bacteria that, according to the CDC, causes more than 1.2 million cases of food borne illness in the United States every year. In an effort to decrease the frequency …

The Comparative Impacts Of A Specifically Designed Yoga Program And Power Training On Neuromuscular And Functional Performances In Older Adults With Parkinson’S Disease, Meng Ni

Open Access Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Impaired balance and walking function, reduced muscular strength and power, and flexed posture are common in Parkinson’s disease (PD). The benefits of power yoga (YOGA) and power training (PWT) which have been shown to improve physical function in the elderly have yet to be examined in older PD patients. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to compare the effects of YOGA and PWT on neuromuscular performance, balance, gait and perceived quality of life in older PD. METHODS: Forty-one patients (72.2±6.5 y) were randomly allocated to the YOGA, PWT or control (CON) group. YOGA or PWT included 3-month (2 …

Improving Patient Satisfaction After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Nurse Practitioner-Driven Preoperative Education, Jennifer A. White Apr 2015

Improving Patient Satisfaction After Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Nurse Practitioner-Driven Preoperative Education, Jennifer A. White

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Total joint arthroplasty is an undisputed option for relieving pain and improving the function of an arthritic joint. The number of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) annually is expected to increase by 600% in the next two decades (Lau, Gandhi, Mahomed, & Mahomed, 2012).

Current research shows that while 81-89% of patients who have had a TKA are satisfied postoperatively, there is room to improve patient satisfaction by providing further education preoperatively. While research cannot agree on a single, specific variable that influences patient dissatisfaction, a review of the literature shows that patients repeatedly note their “unmet expectations” as …

Spilt Milk: An Unusual Cause Of Bilateral Chylothorax, Sara Matani, J Rush Pierce Jr Apr 2015

Spilt Milk: An Unusual Cause Of Bilateral Chylothorax, Sara Matani, J Rush Pierce Jr

Hospital Medicine

We report a case of bilateral chylothorax without evidence of chylous fistula in a 62-year-old man following total laryngectomy and bilateral selective neck dissection for laryngeal cancer. Chylous fistulae, a well-known complication of neck dissection, occurs following 1% to 2% of these surgeries. On rare occasions, the chyle leak may communicate with the pleural space, resulting in chylothorax. This is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Bilateral chylothorax following neck dissection is even rarer, with less than 25 cases reported in the literature. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications. Physicians should have a high index of suspicion, especially when …

Attenuation Of Mtorc1-Driven Secretion Of Lipoproteins And Triacylglycerides By Short Chain Fatty Acids: Mechanistic Insight Into The Pathogenesis Of Hypertriglyceridemia, Joseph L. Roberts Apr 2015

Attenuation Of Mtorc1-Driven Secretion Of Lipoproteins And Triacylglycerides By Short Chain Fatty Acids: Mechanistic Insight Into The Pathogenesis Of Hypertriglyceridemia, Joseph L. Roberts

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is a serine/threonine kinase that drives several anabolic processes including lipid synthesis, protein synthesis, and adipogenesis. mTORC1 is highly active in the livers of obese rodents, in overnutrition, and is implicated in the development of obesity related metabolic disorders, including the overproduction of atherogenic lipoproteins. Direct inhibition of mTORC1 is not a viable treatment strategy because it prevents feedback inhibition of the insulin-signaling cascade, leading to increased lipid synthesis and secretion of lipoproteins. Thus, therapeutic approaches that drive catabolic pathways are considered promising mechanisms for overcoming mTORC1-driven anabolism. Human liver HepG2 cells …

Switching Tactics: Phenotypic Plasticity In The Alternative Mate-Finding Tactics Of Burying Beetles, Theresa Mulrey Apr 2015

Switching Tactics: Phenotypic Plasticity In The Alternative Mate-Finding Tactics Of Burying Beetles, Theresa Mulrey

Theses and Dissertations

Male Nicrophorus burying beetles utilize two alternative mate-finding tactics, representing an ideal model system to test the influence of environmental cues on the expression of alternative tactics. The "searching" tactic involves flying in search of a carcass on which to mate. This tactic can result in high levels of paternity, but is risky in that carcasses are rare and competition for carcasses is fierce. The "signaling" tactic, which involves emitting pheromone in the absence of a carcass to attract females, is energetically less costly, but a signalling male must mate with multiple females to achieve the same reproductive returns as …

The Elements Of Healing And Wellness Post Diagnosis Of Cancer: A Review Of The Literature And A Personal Account, Tiffany Bystra Apr 2015

The Elements Of Healing And Wellness Post Diagnosis Of Cancer: A Review Of The Literature And A Personal Account, Tiffany Bystra

Honors Theses

Being diagnosed with cancer is an earth-shaking experience that can break even the most strong and stable of individuals. Thoughts of uncertainty and anxiety are commonly experienced for those having been diagnosed, and when one’s health is compromised, nothing else seems to matter except becoming healthy and well again. This honors thesis deeply investigates my personal experiences being a recent cancer survivor in conjunction with reviewing the research and literature to investigate how one can promote their healing and wellness through holistic means despite going through medical treatments that are physically, emotionally, and spiritually taxing on every level. A thorough …
