Population Genetics And Experiments In Metabolic Enzymes Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Erik Nathanael Lavington May 2015

Population Genetics And Experiments In Metabolic Enzymes Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Erik Nathanael Lavington

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Control of metabolic flux, the flow of metabolites through a complex metabolic network, is of importance to understand how an organism is sensing, and responding to, nutrient changes in its environment. Metabolic flux control can be measured for, and a control coefficient assigned to, each enzyme in a pathway. Measuring metabolic flux control in multicellular organisms is complicated by the fact that nutrient sensing and metabolic flux control may vary by tissue type. Major effects should be detectable in genomic information, as enzymes with high control coefficients will exhibit genetic patterns of adaptation when the pathway is under selection pressure. …

Healthcare Utilization Analysis For Housing First Program In Anchorage Alaska, Gandy Becker May 2015

Healthcare Utilization Analysis For Housing First Program In Anchorage Alaska, Gandy Becker

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Homelessness, especially for the chronically homeless individual with substance abuse issues, often results in high use of emergency services, depression, loss of hope, increased victimization, poor medical care of chronic conditions, and intense suffering for the individual affected. Proponents of the Housing First model believe that housing is a human right, a need, and should be made available to all for basic human dignity. The primary purpose of this study was to answer the question of whether a Housing First model example in Alaska has impacted healthcare utilization for this specific population. Data on hospital visit numbers and hospital costs …

Exploring The Evolutionary Origins Of Obesity Through The Endocrine-Physical Activity-Bone Axis, Maria G. Lapera May 2015

Exploring The Evolutionary Origins Of Obesity Through The Endocrine-Physical Activity-Bone Axis, Maria G. Lapera

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

As the global obesity epidemic spreads, scientists struggle to understand the biological, cultural, and evolutionary bases for modern fatness. Understanding the contributions of the interaction between physical activity and the endocrine system to regulating metabolism could potentially help people who are overweight or obese in losing weight and illustrate one of the evolutionary pathways that encourages modern obesity. This study used an innovative approach that integrated a lifestyle physical activity and diet questionnaire coupled with endocrine analysis (leptin, osteocalcin) and anthropometric measures in order to create baseline measurements of fit individuals. The mean osteocalcin level was 4201.46 pg/mL and the …

Cell Signaling Events Differentiate Er-Negative Subtypes From Er-Positive Breast Cancer, Maria Worsham, Dhananjay A. Chitale, Kang-Mei Chen, Indrani Datta, George Divine

Otolaryngology Articles

Currently available markers routinely used in clinical practice are of limited value to patients with estrogen receptor-negative (ER(-)) breast cancer [basal-like and HER2neu-positive (HER(+))], an aggressive subtype. Our aim was to uncover molecular pathways and signaling networks exposed by differentially methylated genes informative of the biology of ER(-) breast cancer (BC) subtypes versus ER-positive (ER(+)). Whole-genome methylation array analysis was carried out using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation27 BeadChip on 14 primary BC: five ER(+), four triple-negative (TNBC), and five ER(-)HER2(+). Degree of methylation was calculated as a β-value (ranging from 0 to 1), and M-values [log (β/(1 - β)] were …

Cross-Regional Engagement Between Asean And Latin America: Defining Barriers To Trade In The Malaysia-Chile Partnership, E.S. Devadason, V.G.R. Chandran, S. Mubarik

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This study seeks to compare bilateral export potential estimates in the Malaysia-Chile partnership within the context of the emerging region of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and identify barriers to trade, to provide insights into bilateral market access for exporters. Clearly, the empirical findings suggest over trading in the major exporting sectors from both sides, since the export basket is also concentrated both ways in the Malaysia-Chile trade. Through the interviews, fewer restrictions are reported by the various stakeholders, as the extent of trade engagement is still somewhat low. Instead, the challenges identified within specific sub-sectors from both sides …

King V. Burwell And The Rise Of The Administrative State, Ronald D. Rotunda May 2015

King V. Burwell And The Rise Of The Administrative State, Ronald D. Rotunda

University of Miami Business Law Review

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—popularly called either the “ACA,” or “Obamacare” by opponents, proponents, and even the White House—is a complex law totaling nearly a thousand pages in length. The litigation now before the Supreme Court in King v. Burwell presents, on the surface, a simple issue of statutory interpretation. However, that surface has a very thin veneer. If the Court allows administrators carte blanche to change the very words of a statute, we will have come a long way towards governance by bureaucrats. Over the years, Congress has delegated many of its powers, but it has never …

Chemical And Functional Properties Of Brosimum Alicastrum Seed Powder (Maya Nut, Ramón Nut), Chad Thomas Carter May 2015

Chemical And Functional Properties Of Brosimum Alicastrum Seed Powder (Maya Nut, Ramón Nut), Chad Thomas Carter

All Theses

Brosimum alicastrum is a member of the Moraceae family of edible botanicals. The fruit from this tree contains an edible seed that may be dried or roasted, ground into powder and incorporated into baked goods. Although researchers have claimed that B. alicastrum seed powders have high nutritional value, there is very little published evidence to support these claims. Moreover, little is known about the functional properties of B. alicastrum seed powders in traditional baked goods. Thus, the purpose of this research was to determine the nutritional composition of B. alicastrum seed powder and the feasibility of incorporating this seed powder …

Labor Force Commute Mode Preferences And The Natural Environment, Brandon Killen May 2015

Labor Force Commute Mode Preferences And The Natural Environment, Brandon Killen

Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses

In commuting to work, commuters select from a limited variety of transportation modes, including alternative modes like cycling and walking, based on needs and preferences. Understanding these needs and preferences, and how the conditions of the immediate environment can influence them can benefit both businesses and local governments in their efforts to accommodate the commute needs of their workers and better serve their communities. Though the body of commute preference research has grown significantly over recent decades, the study of the effects of the natural environment has remained mostly overlooked. In my research, I examined the relationships between selected weather …

It is estimated that of the 85% of Americans that own cell phones, over half of these cell phone owners use apps on their phone (Fox & Duggan, 2012; Purcell, 2011). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2013), by 2015, 500 million mobile device users will be using mobile health, or “m-Health” apps. Healthcare professionals are increasingly adopting mobile technology as an innovative, cost-efficient, and timesaving tool that may promote patient wellness and disease prevention (Kumar, 2013; mHealth Bible, 2013). Although mobile technology is a natural fit to the field of occupational therapy, research demonstrates that few resources …

Candida Albicans Adenylyl Cyclase – Camp Pathway And Hyphal Growth | Candida Albicans Adenylyl Cyclase €“ Camp Pathway And Hyphal Growth, Salvatore Michael Parrino May 2015

Candida Albicans Adenylyl Cyclase – Camp Pathway And Hyphal Growth | Candida Albicans Adenylyl Cyclase €“ Camp Pathway And Hyphal Growth, Salvatore Michael Parrino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The human opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans can undergo a transition from budding to hyphal growth in response to host cues that promotes tissue invasion and dissemination through the host. Accompanying the morphogenic change is an upregulation of genes that promote virulence. Morphogenic switching and subsequent gene regulation are required for full virulence in the host and are an area of intense study. It has been shown that increased production of cAMP by Cyr1 Adenylyl cyclase can induce hyphal growth. Further, it was proposed that activation of Cyr1 and an increase in cAMP were necessary for all hyphal growth in …

A Novel Chemically Modified Curcumin As A Pleiotropic Mmp-Inhibitor: Therapeutic Potential In Locally- And Systemically-Induced Periodontal (And Other) Connective Tissue Breakdown, Muna Saad Elburki

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Periodontitis, the most common chronic inflammatory disease known to mankind, is recognized as the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Although periodontitis is initiated by anaerobic gram-negative bacteria, the destruction of the periodontium is essentially mediated by the host response. Numerous investigators have described various pharmacologic strategies to modulate the host response during periodontal disease, however only a non-antimicrobial tetracycline formulation is FDA-approved for these patients. Of interest, this formulation of sub-antimicrobial-dose doxycycline (SDD) has shown efficacy in clinical trials in other diseases also, e.g, rheumatoid arthritis. However, a significant drawback of the approved SDD is that this novel …

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster May 2015

Gcn5l1 Functions As A Mitochondrial Acetyltransferase That Regulates Mitophagy, Bradley Roy Webster

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Caloric restriction (CR) increases lifespan and promotes both longevity and €˜healthy-aging. CR's benefits are dependent in part on NAD-dependent deacetylases known as sirtuins. NAD levels increase with CR promoting sirtuin-mediated deacetylation of lysine residues. Humans express seven sirtuin isoforms that localize to specific sub-cellular compartments. Sirtuins and acetylation affect numerous cellular processes including mitochondrial function. Sirt3 is the major mitochondrial deacetylase and regulates mitochondrial function namely ATP levels, oxidative stress and metabolism. Given the importance of mitochondrial acetylation and Sirt3, we hypothesized the existence of a mitochondrial-localized acetyltransferase that 1) localizes to the mitochondria; 2) has an acetyltransferase domain; and …

Fordham Law Review

Tabitha Walrond gave birth to Tyler Isaac Walrond on June 27, 1997, when Tabitha, a black woman from the Bronx, was nineteen years old. Four months before the birth, Tabitha, who received New York public assistance, attempted to enroll Tyler in her health insurance plan (HIP), but encountered a mountain of bureaucratic red tape and errors. After several trips to three different offices in the city, Tabitha still could not get a Medicaid card for Tyler. Tabitha’s city caseworker informed her that she would have to wait until after Tyler’s social security card and birth certificate arrived to get the …

Migrant Remittances, Population Ageing And Intergenerational Family Obligations In Sri Lanka, Michele Ruth Gamburd May 2015

Migrant Remittances, Population Ageing And Intergenerational Family Obligations In Sri Lanka, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

As Sri Lanka’s population ages, its migrant women face a difficult choice: should they work abroad to remit money to provision their families, or should they stay at home to look after elderly kin? Although numerous studies have explored migration’s effects on children, fewer works focus on issues of elder care. This essay presents contextualizing information on transnational migration from Sri Lanka and the rapid ageing that is transforming the country’s population structure from a pyramid with many youth and few elders into a column. Using qualitative ethnographic data gathered from a labour-sending village in southern Sri Lanka, this anthropological …

Internship Impact In Early Intervention, Morgan E. Anderson May 2015

Internship Impact In Early Intervention, Morgan E. Anderson

Senior Honors Projects

Early childhood intervention programs were introduced in the 1960s, and professionals have recognized the benefits of intensive therapy and education starting when the child is an infant up to the age of three. Working with a child in a comfortable environment, such as their own home, preschool, child care center or even the community has many benefits. Conducting sessions in a more everyday environment encourages family interaction and support. When a family member, caretaker, or even teacher is present to witness the therapy session, they are more likely to be comfortable carrying these techniques over into the everyday routine. Working …

Effects Of Inositol-6-Phosphate (Phytate) On Mucin 3 Of The Gastrointestinal Tract, Jesse Lawson May 2015

Effects Of Inositol-6-Phosphate (Phytate) On Mucin 3 Of The Gastrointestinal Tract, Jesse Lawson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mucins are heavily glycosylated epithelial proteins. Under or overexpression of mucins may lead to several different types of dysfunctions. Mucins are under investigation as possible diagnostic markers for malignancies and other disease. This study examined the over/under expression of Mucin-3 in the presence of IP6. Three groups of six mice were fed varying levels of phytate (inositol 6-phosphate, IP6) for six days before being subjected to carbon dioxide asphyxiation. Sections of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, stomach, and colon were collected, lysed, and the tissue proteins were prepared and analyzed by Western Blot to determine Mucin-3 expression. The hypothesis was that …
