Proust's Medusa: Ovid, Evolution, And Modernist Metamorphosis, Gregory John Mercurio
Proust's Medusa: Ovid, Evolution, And Modernist Metamorphosis, Gregory John Mercurio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Ovid's Metamorphoses has served as an indispensable text for Modernism, not least for such foundational Modernists as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis. This dissertation examines how these writers characteristically employ Ovidian metamorphoses with a specifically evolutionary inflection, particularly in a post- Darwinian world informed by varying -often authoritarian- notions of biological adaptation, as well as an increasing emphasis on Mendalian genetics as the determining factor in what would become known as the Modern Synthesis in evolutionary theory. Using the theoretical platforms of both Queer Theory and Object Ontology, this dissertation proposes that a more pluralized, less authoritative …
Control Of Cell Cycle Progression By Mtor, Amrita Chatterjee
Control Of Cell Cycle Progression By Mtor, Amrita Chatterjee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Over the past few years it has become apparent that cancer cells require the activation of a set of intra-cellular signals that promote cell cycle progression and survival. One of the most common survival signals activated in human cancers is mediated by mTOR -the mammalian target of rapamycin. mTOR is a critical nutrient and energy sensor in cells that lets the cell know that there is sufficient material available for a cell to double its mass and divide. mTOR causes the phosphorylation of downstream targets ribosomal subunit S6 kinase and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) binding protein-1 (4E-BP1), which promotes …
Hearing Conservation Attitudes And Behaviors At Orthodox Jewish Weddings, Audrey Margulies
Hearing Conservation Attitudes And Behaviors At Orthodox Jewish Weddings, Audrey Margulies
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Previous research has shown that prolonged exposure to noise can cause permanent hearing loss. Noise levels at Orthodox Jewish weddings can reach extremely high and damaging levels, yet the hearing conservation attitudes and behaviors of the attendees are unknown. The objective of this study is to identify the attitudes and behaviors of Orthodox Jewish wedding attendees toward hearing conservation. The major questions are: 1. What are the sound exposure levels at Orthodox Jewish weddings? 2. Do attendees hold positive attitudes toward the need for hearing conservation at Orthodox Jewish weddings? 3. What hearing conservation is being practiced at weddings among …
Bad Apple: Complexities Of New York City Food Aid Programs, Rose Meagan Jimenez
Bad Apple: Complexities Of New York City Food Aid Programs, Rose Meagan Jimenez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The only universal thing about food is that everyone needs to eat. In the United States, there are more instances of food insecurity than impoverishment. Governmental and local food aid programs are complex but are essentially motivated by socioeconomic issues. Food aid programs, from community gardening to Food Stamps, initially stem from a depression-era need to stimulate the economy. However, as socioeconomic issues change, food aid programs also evolve to meet those needs. By excavating different pieces of literature that discuss issues in food aid, the forms of structural violence that cause hunger come to life. This piece discusses community …
The Role Of Emotional Support Consistency And Child Risk Factors In Predicting Pre-K Cognitive And Social-Emotional Development, Amy Lynn Cannell-Cordier
The Role Of Emotional Support Consistency And Child Risk Factors In Predicting Pre-K Cognitive And Social-Emotional Development, Amy Lynn Cannell-Cordier
Dissertations and Theses
The quality of children's daily experiences in preschool classrooms is predictive of their school readiness and later achievement (Duncan et al., 2007; La Paro & Pianta, 2000). One particularly important aspect of these experiences is the quality of emotional support provided by teachers and peers in the classroom (Hamre & Pianta, 2005; Howes et al., 2008; Mashburn, 2008; National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning, 2012). Traditionally, emotional support quality has been calculated as the average of ratings taken across the school year and is meant to represent children's average daily experience, without regard to any variability which exists within …

Silencing Of The Oshp Gene For Increasing Abiotic Stress Tolerance In Rice, Virginia Ann Boyett
Silencing Of The Oshp Gene For Increasing Abiotic Stress Tolerance In Rice, Virginia Ann Boyett
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project involves increasing the tolerance to abiotic stresses in rice through silencing the OsHP gene, a homolog of Arabidopsis AtClb, which has been identified as a negative regulator of response to abiotic stresses. A fragment of the OsHP gene was cloned into a Gateway entry vector pENTR/D-TOPO, and a silencing construct was created with the Gateway destination vector pANDA through an LR clonase reaction. Embryogenic callus tissue was generated from seed of the rice cultivars `Nipponbare' and `LaGrue'. Biolistic and Agrobacterium-mediated transformation procedures were used to transfer the pANDA_OsHP silencing construct into the rice callus tissue. Transformed calli …

Wecan Implementation For Parents Of At-Risk Hispanic Adolescents In Middle School, Shannon Leigh Devita
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
CDC-reported childhood obesity rates have tripled in the past three years. Among children in grades five, seven and nine, 30% are overweight or obese, with Hispanic students more likely to be overweight than White students. This evidence-based project examined the effectiveness of NHLBI’s WeCan! for at-risk middle-school-age Hispanic children and parents. The program was implemented at school in two weekly sessions, and its effectiveness was evaluated using the WeCan! survey. The program resulted in improved knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes related energy balance, portion size, healthy foods, physical activity, and screen time and may be useful in other school settings.

Greening A Drug-Addicted Economy: Can Puerto Rico Ease Away From The Toxic Pharmaceutical Industry To A Sustainably Diverse Economy?, Natalie Galarza
Student Theses 2015-Present
Puerto Rico is not the most well known place to most Americans. The small island in the Caribbean is neither an independent nation nor a state, bur rather a commonwealth of the U.S. Life filled coral reefs surround the coasts, rainforests and lush vegetation cover the land, and an underground cave system and glowing bioluminescent bay fascinate all those that venture to them. These natural wonders as well as the vibrant culture are the primary aspects most people who are familiar with Puerto Rico think of. However, the main sector of Puerto Rico’s economy has nothing to do with any …

Study Of Prestige And Resource Control Using Fish Remains From Cathlapotle, A Plankhouse Village On The Lower Columbia River, J. Shoshana Rosenberg
Dissertations and Theses
Social inequality is a trademark of Northwest Coast native societies, and the relationship between social prestige and resource control, particularly resource ownership, is an important research issue on the Northwest Coast. Faunal remains are one potential but as yet underutilized path for examining this relationship. My thesis work takes on this approach through the analysis of fish remains from the Cathlapotle archaeological site (45CL1). Cathlapotle is a large Chinookan village site located on the Lower Columbia River that was extensively excavated in the 1990s. Previous work has established prestige distinctions between houses and house compartments, making it possible to examine …

The Impact Of Borehole Wells And A Hygiene And Sanitation Program On Diarrhea: Evidence From Rural Southwest Uganda, Morgan Adams
The Impact Of Borehole Wells And A Hygiene And Sanitation Program On Diarrhea: Evidence From Rural Southwest Uganda, Morgan Adams
Master's Theses
Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death for children under age five, killing approximately 2,089 children a day (WHO, 2013). Clean water access, sanitation facilities, and good hygiene behavior are solutions to decreasing child mortality and morbidity caused by fecal contamination. I estimate the impact of borehole wells and a hygiene and sanitation program on diarrhea by creating a retrospective panel. I ask mothers to rank children from the most to least diarrhea when under the age of two and use this ranking to compare siblings, where at least one had been exposed to the program. The methodology …
Tinkering With Success: College Athletes, Social Media And The First Amendment, Mary Margaret Meg Penrose
Tinkering With Success: College Athletes, Social Media And The First Amendment, Mary Margaret Meg Penrose
Pace Law Review
Good law does not always make good policy. This article seeks to provide a legal assessment, not a policy directive. The policy choices made by individual institutions and athletic departments should be guided by law, but absolutely left to institutional discretion. Many articles written on college student-athletes’ social media usage attempt to urge policy directives clothed in constitutional analysis.
In this author’s opinion, these articles have lost perspective – constitutional perspective. This article seeks primarily to provide a legal and constitutional assessment so that schools and their athletic departments will have ample information to then make their own policy choices.

Cardiorespiratory Responses To High Intensity Interval Shallow Water Exercise, Laura Miller, Mitchell Fisher, Heather Gerrish, Karen Roemer, Debra D'Acquisto
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the cardiorespiratory responses to shallow water, high intensity interval exercise (SW-HIIE). Interestingly, no studies have investigated the physiological responses of performing HIIE in a water medium. Thus, the main question of this investigation was the following: What is the physiological load imposed on the human body during an acute SW-HIIE session? Physically active females, n=9 and 26+6 yrs, volunteered for this descriptive study. Volunteers performed a familiarization trial, an incremental maximal shallow water exercise test, and a SW-HIIE session. Participants were submerged to ~75 percent of stature (axillary level). SW-HIIE consisted of …
The Effects Of A Vegetarian Diet On Dietary Iron Intake In Adolescent Female Endurance Athletes, Tucker Reiley, Heather Gerrish, Meghan Varner
The Effects Of A Vegetarian Diet On Dietary Iron Intake In Adolescent Female Endurance Athletes, Tucker Reiley, Heather Gerrish, Meghan Varner
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
A chief concern for female endurance athletes is adequate iron status which is partially determined by iron and vitamin C intake. This study examines the impact of diet on iron intake in adolescent female cross country runners. Animal-based iron sources are recognized as being better absorbed and more bioavailable than non-animal-based sources. Additionally, vitamin C promotes iron absorption. In this study, the independent variable was defined as a vegetarian diet (one excluding meat, fish, and poultry), with the control being a non-vegetarian diet. The hypothesis was that vegetarian cross country runners would have lower mean iron intakes than non-vegetarians. Data …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Consuming recommended amounts of protein is vital to ensure adequate health and proper function of the body. Specific populations, such as vegans and vegetarians, may find consuming recommended amounts of protein from the diet challenging. Therefore, the addition of alternative sources of protein in baked goods was the primary focus in this study. Pea powder protein isolate, from the dry yellow pea, was utilized. Pumpkin spice muffins were manipulated to contain various amounts of pea powder protein to create a good source of protein and an excellent source of protein compared to a control containing no added protein. Data were …
Whole Body Fuel Use: A Preliminary Study Of Carbohydrate And Fat Oxidation During Water Exercise, Heather Gerrish, Laura Miller, Mitchell Fisher, Debra D'Acquisto
Whole Body Fuel Use: A Preliminary Study Of Carbohydrate And Fat Oxidation During Water Exercise, Heather Gerrish, Laura Miller, Mitchell Fisher, Debra D'Acquisto
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The purpose of this investigation was to measure energy expenditure and whole body carbohydrate and fat oxidation during shallow water exercise (SWE; submerged to axillary level). The level of energy expenditure and the relative contribution of fuels (e.g., carbohydrate [CHO], fat) depends on the intensity of exercise effort. This descriptive study addressed two questions: (1) what is the energy expenditure of performing SWE over a range of intensities; and (2) how does the rate of CHO and fat usage change with increasingly more demanding SWE efforts. Five healthy females (ages 18 to 26 years) performed five submaximal and one maximal …
