Sustainable Development For People Or Profit?, Eric Rr Weaver Jun 2015

Sustainable Development For People Or Profit?, Eric Rr Weaver

Suburban Sustainability

As Earth’s populations grow, will key planetary systems be pushed over the “tipping point” beyond Earth’s carrying capacity for sustaining human life? There is a strong body of literature developing the concept of Planetary Boundaries to help identify the limits for maintaining the Earth’s environmental stability. It is presumed that exceeding the Planetary Boundaries will result in an environmental tipping point, shifting the earth into a new environmental equilibrium detrimental to life as we know it. Research shows industrial agriculture is a major force pressing the environment to, and beyond, these limits. This review of top tier journals details the …

Calcium Channel Blockers, Progression To Dementia, And Effects On Amyloid Beta Peptide Production, Mark A. Lovell, Erin Abner, Richard Kryscio, Liou Xu, Shuling X. Fister, Bert C. Lynn

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Previous epidemiologic studies suggest that antihypertensive drugs may be protective against cognitive decline. To determine if subjects enrolled in the University of Kentucky longitudinal aging study who used antihypertensive drugs showed diminished progression to dementia, we used a 3-parameter logistic regression model to compare the rate of progression to dementia for subjects who used any of the five common categories of antihypertensive drugs to those with similar demographic characteristics but who did not use antihypertensives. Regression modeling showed that subjects who used calcium channel blockers (CCBs) but not the other classes of antihypertensives showed a significant decrease in the rate …

Designing For Sustainability: Fostering Reflection In The Design Process, Eva Durall, Heidi Uppa, Teemu Leinonen Jun 2015

Designing For Sustainability: Fostering Reflection In The Design Process, Eva Durall, Heidi Uppa, Teemu Leinonen

Nordes Conference Series

Reflection is needed to provide solutions for wicked problems and to encourage social sustainability. Although reflection has been recognized as key in deep understanding and decision-making, it is rarely included in design agendas. In this paper we describe how reflection can enrich the design process, as well as their final solutions. We present design games as a participatory method that supports reflection and we exemplify it through two design cases. In each case, we point out several reflection triggers used in design games and we analyse the level of reflection they provoke. We conclude that opportunities for joint reflection are …

The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl Jun 2015

The Paradox Of Design Methods: Towards Alternative Functions, Kathrina Dankl

Nordes Conference Series

During the last ten years design has been discussed as a driver for novelty and innovation. Design methods have been applied to challenges ranging from environmental pollution, food to health care and have been used in other disciplines and by people with non-design backgrounds alike. Social Innovation, Design Thinking and Co-Creation are three approaches that are strongly associated with this development. While their borders blur, their toolboxes – the methods they apply - are similar. Sustainability usually requires design methods that enable a participation in the design process of all interested parties. But while typical methods claim to favour multi-disciplinarily, …

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich Jun 2015

Nature’S Law: The Evolutionary Origin Of Property Rights, Kathryn Loncarich

Pace Law Review

This article contributes to the outline of the origin of property rights set forth by Professor Krier, by more fully analyzing the role of evolutionary biology in the development of property rights. This article focuses on the pre-political formation of property ownership and the initial formation of concepts of property and ownership. Expanding on Krier’s analysis, this article considers the implications of this evolutionary foundation on our modern property regime, particularly given the growing chasm between the wealthy on one side and the poor and middle-class on the other.

Part II discusses the growing disparity of wealth in America and …

Occupational Deprivation Or Occupational Adaptation Of Mexican Americans On Renal Dialysis, Shirley A. Wells Jun 2015

Occupational Deprivation Or Occupational Adaptation Of Mexican Americans On Renal Dialysis, Shirley A. Wells

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to explore the occupational changes and perceptions experienced by Mexican Americans with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and their families living with dialysis. In-depth interviews were conducted with 17 Mexican Americans with ESRD and 17 family members. The participants with ESRD described altered or lost activity patterns, capacities and freedoms. With a heightened awareness of death, the family members made altered occupational choices, which were consistent with their cultural values. Changes in the physical body, adhering to the dialysis regimen and environmental restrictions created barriers to occupational participation. These findings suggest that living with dialysis …

Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Consequences Of Loneliness: Health Behavior, Social Interactions, Self-Disclosure, And Perceived Responsiveness, Sarah Noel Arpin Jun 2015

Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Consequences Of Loneliness: Health Behavior, Social Interactions, Self-Disclosure, And Perceived Responsiveness, Sarah Noel Arpin

Dissertations and Theses

As a social species, human beings are driven by an innate desire to belong and are thus motivated to develop and maintain meaningful social relationships. As such, perceiving a lack of belongingness strongly impacts psychological and physiological health and well-being. A common form of perceived relationship deficits is loneliness, a negative-affective experience detrimental to health and well-being over time. Through a series of three manuscripts, this dissertation applies the full-cycle model of social psychological research to explore various affective, behavioral, and cognitive consequences of loneliness. Whereas existing models of loneliness focus on long-lasting or chronic forms of loneliness, these studies …

The Development And Examination Of A New Walking Executive Function Test For People Over 50 Years Of Age, Arturo Leyva Pizano Jun 2015

The Development And Examination Of A New Walking Executive Function Test For People Over 50 Years Of Age, Arturo Leyva Pizano

Open Access Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Reduction in executive function (EF) performance is one of the most important factors associated with the loss of functional independence among older adults. Computer-based tests are commonly used to evaluate EF; however, these tests are upper limb dominant (mouse and keyboard) while most activities of daily living (ADL) are lower limb dominant. The purpose of this study was to examine the utility of a newly developed walking EF test called the Walking Response and Inhibition Test (WRIT). We not only validated the WRIT by comparing the associations between its results and those of a number of established computer-based tests, …

Nutrition Regulation Of Male Accessory Gland Growth And Maturation In Tribolium Castaneum, Jingjing Xu, Ashlee L. Anciro, Subba R. Palli Jun 2015

Nutrition Regulation Of Male Accessory Gland Growth And Maturation In Tribolium Castaneum, Jingjing Xu, Ashlee L. Anciro, Subba R. Palli

Entomology Faculty Publications

Insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS) pathway is known to control growth, development and reproduction. Insulin-like peptide mediated body size plasticity in Drosophila melanogaster has been reported. Here, our studies showed that IIS pathway and nutrition regulate growth and maturation of the male accessory gland (MAG) in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum. The size of MAG increased from day 1 to day 5 post-adult emergence (PAE). This increase in the size of MAG is contributed by an increase in cell size, but not cell number. The growth of MAG was impaired after double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-mediated knockdown in the expression of genes …
