Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers
Measuring Resting Energy Requirements For Pediatric Oncology Patients With The Medgem, Lauren C. Flowers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Pediatric oncology patients are at an increased risk for malnutrition related to their diagnosis and corresponding treatment. It is essential that accurate and reliable methods of measuring energy needs are used throughout treatment to avoid increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The primary objective of the study is to determine if the energy expenditure obtained by a standard energy equation and by the MedGem® accurately predicts needs in pediatric oncology patients as compared to the gold standard indirect calorimeter. The three measurements were tested on the same day for patients aged 7-17 years. The data was analyzed using a one …
A Bayesian Analysis Of The Impact Of Hereditary Attributes On The Diagnosis Of Als Patients, Kathryn Dee Coleman
A Bayesian Analysis Of The Impact Of Hereditary Attributes On The Diagnosis Of Als Patients, Kathryn Dee Coleman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between hereditary attributes of patients that have been diagnosed with ALS and the change in their respective ALSFRS and/or ALSFRS-R scores over the length of a clinical trial in which they participated. These scores assess the patient's ability to perform everyday tasks, as well as describe the capability to breathe and eat. Data for each of the 8,600 patients was collected by a group called PRO-ACT, and was de-identified prior to access. Bayesian methods are used to estimate the mean of the posterior distributions of parameters in a simple linear …

The following report represents an expansion of the data collection activities mandated by a 2012 Administration of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). Prior to 2012, the AIDD funded data projects, Access to Integrated Employment, Family and Individual Information Systems project (FISP), Residential Information Systems Project (RISP) and the State of the States in Developmental Disabilities only collected data from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The 2012 FOA requested that three of the AIDD data projects work together to include the five U.S. Territories (American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, …

Comparative Study Of The D-Values Of Salmonella Spp. And Enterococcus Faecium In Wheat Flour, Didier Dodier
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Low-moisture foods contaminated with Salmonella spp. have been implicated in several foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States. The food industry has to incorporate preventive control in their process and validate thermal processes to assure food safety. The thermal destruction of Enterococcus faecium ATTC 8459 and Salmonella spp. was determined at 3 water activity levels (0.11, 0.18 and 0.33) at 80ºC, 85ºC and 90ºC. Aerobic plates counts petrifilms were used as non-selective medium for both bacteria, Enterobacteriaceae petrifilms were used as selective medium for Salmonella spp., and peptone water modified with sodium azide as a selective medium for Enterococcus faecium …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Objective
To examine variations in the quality and cost of care provided to patients with diabetes mellitus by Community Health Centers (CHCs) compared to other primary care settings.
Research Design and Methods
We used data from the 2005–2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (N = 2,108). We used two dependent variables: quality of care and ambulatory care expenditures. Our primary independent variable was whether the respondent received care in a Community Health Centers (CHCs) or not. We estimated logistic regression models to determine the probability of quality of care, and used generalized linear models with log link and gamma distribution to …
The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks
The Impoverished Island: Development Intervention In Madagascar, Taylor Eubanks
The Catalyst
Madagascar, an island nation in Africa, is mired in poverty; approximately 76.5% of its population lives below the national poverty line of less than $1 per day. Instances of extreme poverty cannot be explained by single dimension, clearly delineated, universally applicable causes and solutions; rather, extreme poverty must be analyzed as a multi-dimensional phenomenon created and perpetuated by conditions specific to individual societies and communities. To speak broadly of poverty and its causes fails to provide an accurate depiction of why a country is poor. The extreme impoverishment found in Madagascar is the result of cumulative conditions specific to the …
Hypertension Patient Compliance, Taylor Myers
Hypertension Patient Compliance, Taylor Myers
University Honors Program
Hypertension is a prevalent condition in the United States that often has many comorbidities. It is usually asymptomatic, so patients are less likely to comply with treatment if they feel healthy. This is a growing concern due to the complications that can arise from hypertension. Hypertension can be associated with a lower quality of life in patients that have symptoms. However, in patients that do not show symptoms they may feel that they have a higher quality of life by not changing their preexisting habits. The reasons for patient noncompliance will be studied as well as interventions to increase compliance, …

The Relationship Between Participation In Athletics And Academic Performance Of Male African American High School Students, Angela Lynnette Hargrave
The Relationship Between Participation In Athletics And Academic Performance Of Male African American High School Students, Angela Lynnette Hargrave
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A dramatic gap in the academic achievement of African American males and the academic achievement of Caucasian males across this country continues to exist. African American males fail to complete high school at an increasingly high rate or are ill-prepared for postsecondary education upon completion of high school. The disengagement of African American males in schools has been associated with the continuance of this achievement gap. The influence on academic performance that participating in high school athletics had on African American male students who participated in an athletic program as compared to African American male students who did not engaged …

On Sport and Society
In a recent analysis of the money flow in intercollegiate football, The Washington Post, laid out in considerable detail the not so surprising conclusion that revenue at the Power Five Conferences has increased dramatically over the past decade, while spending has exceeded the growth of revenue. Nationally between 2004 and 2014 some 48 athletic departments increased their income from $2.67B to $4.49B. Despite the apparent windfall 25 of those departments ran a deficit in 2014, and two of them, Auburn and Rutgers, lost more money in 2014 than they did in 2004.

Barriers To Treatment Adherence In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Katherine Ann Mclean
Barriers To Treatment Adherence In Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Katherine Ann Mclean
Open Access Dissertations
Poor treatment adherence is a significant challenge for patients, parents, and healthcare providers. Treatment adherence is a serious concern for adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-limiting genetic disorder affecting multiple organ systems. Although some barriers to adherence have been documented in CF, little is known about how these barriers interact at an individual level. The purpose of this study was to conduct a mixed-methods analysis of barriers to adherence reported by adolescents and young adults with CF and their parents. This study utilized qualitative interviews and quantitative measures of adherence and psychosocial functioning to identify key barriers in relation …

The Impact Of The 2008 Financial Crisis On Food Security And Food Expenditures In Mexico: A Disproportionate Effect On The Vulnerable, Mireya Vilar-Compte, Sebastian Sandoval-Olascoaga, Ana Bernal-Stuart, Sandhya Shimoga, Arturo Vargas-Bustamante
Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
Objective The present paper investigated the impact of the 2008 financial crisis on food security in Mexico and how it disproportionally affected vulnerable households. Design A generalized ordered logistic regression was estimated to assess the impact of the crisis on households' food security status. An ordinary least squares and a quantile regression were estimated to evaluate the effect of the financial crisis on a continuous proxy measure of food security defined as the share of a household's current income devoted to food expenditures. Setting Both analyses were performed using pooled cross-sectional data from the Mexican National Household Income and Expenditure …
