A Steward's Adventure In Guatemala, Nick Racchi Jun 2015

A Steward's Adventure In Guatemala, Nick Racchi

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

I recently just got back from an amazing trip to Guatemala. While there, I stayed with a host family in Quetzaltenago (called Xela by the locals), which is a beautiful city with some of the most amazing people that I have ever met. I was there for four weeks and had many adventures, like hiking to the top of the tallest point in Central America, seeing my first live tarantula, jumping off a forty foot bridge into a river, getting sick from eating some delicious street tacos, and learning more about myself and others than I ever thought possible.

The Daily Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Medication Adherence Among People Living With Hiv, Jennifer A. Pellowski Jun 2015

The Daily Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Medication Adherence Among People Living With Hiv, Jennifer A. Pellowski

Doctoral Dissertations

Limited access to resources based on social position can significantly impact health behaviors. Previous research on food insecurity and HIV has focused on establishing the relationship between food insecurity and antiretroviral (ARV) medication non-adherence in a variety of social contexts (i.e. resource poor and resource rich environments). However, one main caveat of these studies is the level of analysis. Previous studies have used cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that concentrate on the individual level of analysis. However, these study designs do not allow for a true test of whether ARV medication non-adherence occurs on days with limited access to food.

Initial Impressions: Trademark Protection For Abbreviations Of Generic Or Descriptive Terms, Mary Lafrance

Akron Law Review

This article compares the approaches which different federal courts have adopted to address the distinctiveness of abbreviations where the underlying expression or information conveyed by the abbreviation is unprotectable either because it is generic or because it is descriptive and lacks secondary meaning. While this study is not intended as a comprehensive survey, it is designed to highlight the inconsistencies in approaches. The article concludes with some observations about the patterns and trends emerging from the unsettled decisional law.

The Sox9 Upstream Region Prone To Chromosomal Aberrations Causing Campomelic Dysplasia Contains Multiple Cartilage Enhancers, Baojin Yao, Qiuqing Wang, Chia-Feng Liu, Pallavi Bhattaram, Wei Li, Timothy J. Mead, James F. Crish, Véronique Lefebvre

Biomedical Sciences

Two decades after the discovery that heterozygous mutations within and around SOX9 cause campomelic dysplasia, a generalized skeleton malformation syndrome, it is well established that SOX9 is a master transcription factor in chondrocytes. In contrast, the mechanisms whereby translocations in the –350/–50-kb region 5 of SOX9 cause severe disease and whereby SOX9 expression is specified in chondrocytes remain scarcely known. We here screen this upstream region and uncover multiple enhancers that activate Sox9-promoter transgenes in the SOX9 expression domain. Three of them are primarily active in chondrocytes. E250 (located at – 250 kb) confines its activity to condensed prechondrocytes, …

Oral Health Care Access In New Hampshire, Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, Lisa Speropolous

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Eleanor M. Jaffee, Joan Widmer, and Lisa I. Speropolous provide an overview of the current state of oral health care in New Hampshire. They report that although New Hampshire is rated above the national average on most measures of pediatric oral health, performance varies substantially by county and by region. Access to adequate oral health care for both children and adults is particularly challenging for low-income families in the sparsely populated northern region of the state. Programs that address oral health care access issues by bringing services to those with the greatest need, such as school-based …

Understanding The Sympathetic Nervous System In Response To Food In Children With Autism And Typically Developing Children, Jonathon D. Haskell Jun 2015

Understanding The Sympathetic Nervous System In Response To Food In Children With Autism And Typically Developing Children, Jonathon D. Haskell

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Previous research behind sympathetic nervous system functioning in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder has shown disturbances in their ability to regulate their arousal level (Miller et al., 2003; Tomcheck and Dunn, 2000). Depicting this notion in previous research, children diagnosed with autism are likely to be comorbid with Sensory Over-responsitivity (SOR) or Sensory under-responsitivity (SUR), and could ultimately elicit variable sympathetic nervous system functioning in response to their sensory environment-whether it be taste, smell, auditory, tactile, or visual stimuli. Although previous research depicts inconsistent measures involving sympathetic responses to stimuli in children with autism, research specifically involving food selectivity provided …

Prevalence And Correlates Of Food Insecurity Among Palestinian Refugees In Lebanon: Data From A Household Survey, Hala Ghattas Ph.D., Annie Belle J. Sassine, Karin Seyfert, Mark Nord, Nadine R. Sahyoun Jun 2015

Prevalence And Correlates Of Food Insecurity Among Palestinian Refugees In Lebanon: Data From A Household Survey, Hala Ghattas Ph.D., Annie Belle J. Sassine, Karin Seyfert, Mark Nord, Nadine R. Sahyoun

Faculty Publications

Lebanon hosts the highest per capita refugee concentration worldwide. The Palestinian presence in Lebanon dates from 1948 and they remain a marginalized population. No information on their food security status has been reported previously. A survey of a representative sample of Palestinian refugee households in Lebanon (n = 2501) was conducted using a stratified two stage cluster sampling approach. We measured food insecurity using a modified USDA household food security module, locally validated. We collected data on household demographic, socioeconomic, health, housing, coping strategies and household intake of food groups and analysed these by food security status. About 41% (CI: …

Estrogen receptor–α (ERα) activity in the brain prevents obesity in both males and females. However, the ERα-expressing neural populations that regulate body weight remain to be fully elucidated. Here we showed that single-minded–1 (SIM1) neurons in the medial amygdala (MeA) express abundant levels of ERα. Specific deletion of the gene encoding ERα (Esr1) from SIM1 neurons, which are mostly within the MeA, caused hypoactivity and obesity in both male and female mice fed with regular chow, increased susceptibility to diet-induced obesity (DIO) in males but not in females, and blunted the body weight–lowering effects of a glucagon-like peptide-1–estrogen …

Traversing Swanton Road, 20th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Dartmouth Scholarship

BACKGROUND. TGF-β has potent profibrotic activity in vitro and has long been implicated in systemic sclerosis (SSc), as expression of TGF-β–regulated genes is increased in the skin and lungs of patients with SSc. Therefore, inhibition of TGF-β may benefit these patients.

METHODS. Patients with early, diffuse cutaneous SSc were enrolled in an open-label trial of fresolimumab, a high-affinity neutralizing antibody that targets all 3 TGF-β isoforms. Seven patients received two 1 mg/kg doses of fresolimumab, and eight patients received one 5 mg/kg dose of fresolimumab. Serial mid-forearm skin biopsies, performed before and after treatment, were analyzed for expression …

Makara Journal of Science

Tonkean macaques are one of seven endemic macaque species on Sulawesi Island. Feeding management in captivity should pay attention to the quality, palatability, and feeding behavior patterns of animals. The goal of this study was to compare the feeding behavior of two social groups of Tonkean macaques at Schmutzer Primates Center (SPC) and Ragunan Zoo (RZ) with different captive management, which was expected to affect feeding behavior. Ad libitum sampling was used to observe daily behavior and hierarchy, while focal animal sampling was used to observe feeding behavior and feed preference. Data were collected from September 2013 until March 2014 …

Xylooligosaccharide Production From Tobacco Stalk Xylan Using Xylanase Streptomyces Sp. Bo 3.2, Muhammad Nur Kholis, Yopi, Anja Meryandini

Makara Journal of Science

Tobacco stalk (TS), which is one type of lignocellulosic material, has a xylan content of up to 21.9%. Lignocellulose can be used to produce xylooligosaccharides (XOs). XOs are dietary fibers that have prebiotic activity. This study aimed to produce XOs from tobacco stalk xylan using xylanase from Streptomyces sp. BO 3.2. After the TS was delignified, the xylan was extracted using the alkali method. The delignification process, which used 1% natrium hypoclorite (NaOCl), decreased the lignins from 32.93% to 18.15%. Xylan extraction was conducted using 10% natrium hydoroxide (NaOH); this extraction produced xylan of 15.53% (w/w). The xylanase produced by …

Non-Operative Management Of Hip Osteoarthritis, Ray Marks Jun 2015

Non-Operative Management Of Hip Osteoarthritis, Ray Marks

Publications and Research

This paper reviews several non-operative and non-pharmacologic management strategies advocated for alleviating the pain and disability experienced by people with hip osteoarthritis. It analyzes whether painful debilitating hip osteoarthritis, which has no effective cure and is often progressive, may be affected positively by non-operative interventions designed to control osteoar- thritis pain. Finally, it provides an integrated plan of management for ameliorating hip osteoar- thritis pain and disability in light of this knowledge.
