Background
Diethyl phthalate (DEP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) are industrial chemicals found in consumer products that may increase risk of adverse health effects. Although use of personal care/beauty products is known to contribute to phthalate exposure, no prior study has examined feminine hygiene products as a potential phthalate source. In this study, we evaluate whether vaginal douching and other feminine hygiene products increase exposure to phthalates among US reproductive-aged women.
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study on 739 women (aged 20–49) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001–2004 to examine the association between self-reported use of …

Nitrate and nitrite are precursors in the endogenous formation of N-nitroso compounds (NOC), potential human carcinogens. We evaluated the association of nitrate and nitrite ingestion with postmenopausal ovarian cancer risk in the Iowa Women's Health Study. Among 28,555 postmenopausal women, we identified 315 incident epithelial ovarian cancers from 1986 to 2010. Dietary nitrate and nitrite intakes were assessed at baseline using food frequency questionnaire data. Drinking water source at home was obtained in a 1989 follow-up survey. Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and total trihalomethane (TTHM) levels for Iowa public water utilities were linked to residences and average levels were …

Bactericera Cockerelli (Sulc) (Hemiptera: Triozidae): Nearly Complete Mitochondrial Genome, Single Mitochondrial Genes And Complete Mitochondrial Genome Comparison, And Insecticide Resistance Genes Of Potato Psyllid Populations From North America, Amalia Rosa Lopez Montiel
Biology Theses
The potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc.), is an economic pest of potatoes and other solanaceous crops, and the vector of the causal agent of zebra chip disease. The expanded distribution of the potato psyllid has resulted in the differentiation of biotypes (central and western), and haplotypes (southwestern and northwestern), according to analysis of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI). In this study, the nearly complete (part of the control region unsequenced) mitochondrial genome from potato psyllid populations occurring in North America: Texas, Nebraska, California, Washington, northwest (Washington) and southwest (Arizona), were sequenced using next generation sequencing technology. The raw …

Drought And Nitrogen Effects On Maize Canopy Temperature And Stress Indices, David A. Carroll
Drought And Nitrogen Effects On Maize Canopy Temperature And Stress Indices, David A. Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
Increased water scarcity due to changing climate, population growth, and economic development is a major threat to the sustainability of irrigated agriculture in the Western United States and other regions around the world. Management practices, such as controlled deficit irrigation, that seek to maximize the productivity of a limited water supply are critical. When using controlled deficit irrigation, remote sensing of crop canopy temperature is a useful tool for assessing crop water status and for more precise irrigation management. However, there is potential that nutrient deficiencies could compound the interpretation of water status from leaf temperature by altering leaf color …
An Unbalanced Act: A Criticism Of How The Court Of Arbitration For Sport Issues Unjustly Harsh Sanctions By Attempting To Regulate Doping In Sport, Melissa Hewitt
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
To participate in international competitions, countries must submit to the doping rules set forth in the World Anti-Doping Code (the Code), a document brought into being by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Under the Agency's Code, athletes are required to commit to mandatory binding arbitration in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which gives them few chances for review of unjustly harsh sanctions. The CAS needs to re-examine its method of appealing doping cases because WADA's current strict liability scheme, coupled with the CAS's transnational jurisdiction, continually violates the rights of international athletes.

The Dangerous Right To Food Choice, Samuel R. Wiseman
The Dangerous Right To Food Choice, Samuel R. Wiseman
Scholarly Publications
Scholars, advocates, and interest groups have grown increasingly concerned with the ways in which government regulations—from agricultural subsidies to food safety regulations to licensing restrictions on food trucks—affect access to local food. One argument emerging from the interest in recent years is that choosing what foods to eat, what I have previously called “liberty of palate,” is a fundamental right.1 The attraction is obvious: infringements of fundamental rights trigger strict scrutiny, which few statutes survive. As argued elsewhere, the doctrinal case for the existence of such a right is very weak. This Essay does not revisit those arguments, but instead …

Acute Or Atypical Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip), Michelle Arnold, Jeff Lehmkuhler
Acute Or Atypical Interstitial Pneumonia (Aip), Michelle Arnold, Jeff Lehmkuhler
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Acute or atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP) is terminology used by veterinary pathologists to describe a characteristic pattern of damage in the lungs of cattle. At necropsy, the first indication of AIP-affected lungs is they fill the thorax and do not collapse like normal lungs when the chest cavity is opened. On further investigation, the AIP lungs are found to be semi-firm with a rubbery texture; not hard and consolidated as occurs in bacterial bronchopneumonia. Large air bubbles are found between portions of the lung (see Figure 1, “interlobular” or “bullous” emphysema) and the cut surface of the lung may appear …

Pregnancy Apps: A Closer Look At The Implications For Childbirth Educators, Christine Frazer, Leslie Hussey, Emily Bosch, Michelle Squire
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
Most pregnant women download an average of three pregnancy apps during their gestational period. There are no set standards in place for what needs to be included in an app’s description leaving consumers to decide for themselves when it comes to selecting the right app to download. The childbirth educator must be knowledgeable about pregnancy apps, in-tune as to what apps their clientele download, and how to analyze them for credibility. This article presents characteristics associated with women of childbearing age (i.e. Millennial/Net generation); the reasons why pregnant women are turning to apps; the limitations of apps, and the childbirth …
Functional Analysis Of The Mms19 Gene In Carica Papaya, Jorge A. Trujillo
Functional Analysis Of The Mms19 Gene In Carica Papaya, Jorge A. Trujillo
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
All organisms face DNA-damaging radiation in the form of UV light and must have mechanisms to repair or undo damage. Plants being stationary organisms must cope with damaging UV rays in a molecular fashion and so have developed many forms of resistance. MMS19 is implicated in DNA repair indirectly as a nuclear encoded gene that binds onto protein assembly complexes in the cytosol. A mutant within the SunUp variety of Carica papaya has a large deletion for MMS19 and presents a diminutive phenotype. Deficient DNA repair mechanisms will shunt cells out of the natural cell cycle and reduce cell proliferation …

Lh-Independent Testosterone Secretion Is Mediated By The Interaction Between Gnrh2 And Its Receptor Within Porcine Testes, Amy T. Desaulniers, Rebecca A. Cederberg, Ginger A. Mills, J. Joe Ford, Clay A. Lents, Brett R. White
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Unlike classic gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GNRH1), the second mammalian isoform (GNRH2) is an ineffective stimulant of gonadotropin release. Species that produce GNRH2 may not maintain a functional GNRH2 receptor (GNRHR2) due to coding errors. A full-length GNRHR2 gene has been identified in swine, but its role in reproduction requires further elucidation. Our objective was to examine the role of GNRH2 and GNRHR2 in testicular function of boars. We discovered that GNRH2 levels were higher in the testis than in the anterior pituitary gland or hypothalamus, corresponding to greater GNRHR2 abundance in the testis versus the anterior pituitary gland. Moreover, GNRH2 …

Gender Equality, Community Divisions And Autonomy: The Prospera Conditional Cash Transfer Program In Chiapas, Mexico, Óscar F. Gil-García
Human Development Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the gender equality component of Prospera, a conditional cash transfer program in Mexico that provides cash contingent on three nodes of civic engagement: health, nutrition and education. This article draws on ethnographic research in La Gloria, a settlement of indigenous Mayan refugees from Guatemala in the Mexican state of Chiapas. I identify the Prospera program’s neoliberal features, the impact its gender equality measures have in the lives of women, their families, and in the political structure of the community of La Gloria. My findings reveal how Prosperareinforces gender and racial hierarchy, fosters community divisions that …

Roots, too often, are out of sight and out of mind, but they are critical for vigorous, healthy plant growth. All plant enthusiasts—including gardeners, farmers, foresters, and naturalists—should think about and appreciate roots if they wish to acquire a holistic understanding of plant biology. This article introduces readers to the mycorrhizal roots of the 2015 VNPS Wildflower of the Year, Clethra alnifolia (Sweet Pepperbush), and explores the diversity of mycorrhizae in a closely related family, Ericaceae.
