To support management decisions, molecular characterization of data and geo-reference of incidence records of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) were combined with data on the biology and ecology of the pest to estimate its climatic suitability and potential spread at regional and global scale. A CLIMEX model was developed and used for the global prediction of current and future climate-induced changes in the distributional shifts of T. absoluta. Results revealed that temperature and moisture characterized T. absoluta population growth while the pest ability to survive the cold, hot, wet and dry stress conditions are the primary characteristics defining its range …

Meta-Analysis Of Dna Methylation And Expression In Liver Cancer Patients, Daniele Todorov, Barbara Stefanska, Katarzyna Lubecka-Pietruszewska
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common liver cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. HCC is often diagnosed at late stages, for which there are no effective chemotherapies. Biomarkers unique to HCC patients could be used to detect HCC early and improve treatment. In the present project, we have performed a meta-analysis to compare the gene-specific DNA methylation and gene expression patterns of HCC patients as reported by four independent studies. Our goal was to discover the strongest changes that distinguish HCC from normal tissue. The relationship between methylation and expression in HCC was examined and genes …

Allocation patterns of carbon and nitrogen in animals are influenced by food quality and quantity, as well as by inherent metabolic and physiological constraints within organisms. Whole body stoichiometry also may vary between the sexes who differ in development rates and reproductive allocation patterns. In aquatic containers, such as tree holes and tires, detrital inputs, which vary in amounts of carbon and nitrogen, form the basis of the mosquito-dominated food web. Differences in development times and mass between male and female mosquitoes may be the result of different reproductive constraints, which could also influence patterns of nutrient allocation. We examined …

Background Previous studies have shown an increase in serum carotenoid status among children when fed carotenoids. This study looked at the effect and dose–response of a known amount of carotenoid consumption on change in skin carotenoid status among children.
Methods Participants were children aged 5 to 17 years from Cache County, UT (n=58). Children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: high (n=18) or low (n=18) dose of a carotenoid-rich juice (2.75 mg carotenoids/30 mL juice), or placebo juice (n=22). Children were asked to drink an assigned dose of the juice (30 to 120 mL/day) based on the weight …

Regulating Unfair Practices Under The Ftc Act: The Need For A Legal Standard Of Unfairness, Teresa M. Schwartz
Akron Law Review
This article will examine the Commission's past and proposed use of the unfairness theory to justify these trade regulation rules. It is the thesis of this article that the Commission has not defined adequately the parameters of the amorphous statutory term "unfair... acts or practices" nor analyzed the term sufficiently or consistently in its application to trade regulation rules. By purposefully leaving the unfairness theory vague, the Commission invites judicial reversals of its regulations and legislative limitations on its authority.
Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch
Farming In The Commons, Fishing In The Congress, And U.S. Aquaculture In The 21st Century, Aaron Welch
Open Access Dissertations
Fisheries and aquaculture policy in the United States exhibits a peculiar duality. Commercial fishing is functionally open-access, heavily subsidized, and regulated by a federal bureaucracy staffed in part by fishing industry representatives. Marine aquaculture, in contrast, is effectively forbidden. Today there are no functioning fish farms anywhere in the federal waters of the United States, largely due to a regulatory environment that discourages applications for aquaculture permits. This bifurcated policy does not seem to be dependent on any specific environmental or economic rationale. Instead, this policy appears to be the product of a series of individual assumptions and policy choices …

Weed Dynamics During Transition To Conservation Agriculture In Western Kenya Maize Production, Judith A. Odhiambo, Urszula Norton, Dennis Ashilenje, Emmanuel C. Omondi, Jay B. Norton
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Weed competition is a significant problem in maize (Zea mays, L.) production in Sub-Saharan Africa. Better understanding of weed management and costs in maize intercropped with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) during transition to conservation agricultural systems is needed. Changes in weed population and maize growth were assessed for a period of three years at Bungoma where crops are grown twice per year and at Trans-Nzoia where crops are grown once per year. Treatments included three tillage practices: minimum (MT), no-till (NT) and conventional (CT) applied to three cropping systems: continuous maize/bean intercropping (TYPICAL), maize/bean intercropping with relayed mucuna after bean …
Impact Of Standardized Oral Health Assessment On Preventing Ventilator-Associated Events, Juana Ambriz De Williams
Impact Of Standardized Oral Health Assessment On Preventing Ventilator-Associated Events, Juana Ambriz De Williams
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common but preventable health-care associated infection that affects up to 20% of mechanically ventilated adult patients, resulting in estimated mortality rates ranging from 13% to 55% (Chahoud, Semaan, Almoosa, 2015; Melsen et al., 2013). In an effort to reduce morbidity, mortality and related costs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), proposed ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention as a national patient safety goal. In 2014, amid growing concerns that the subjectivity of existing definitions had led to inconsistent reporting, thereby impeding efforts to reduce VAP, the CDC refocused surveillance …

Lipid Management Of Patients With Probable Familial Hypercholesterolemia By A Nurse Practitioner, Carla Weidner
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program
Heart disease remains the number one killer of Americans. Patient’s high cholesterol numbers are a major risk factor for the development of heart disease. Studies performed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have recognized this as an area in need of improvement. Strategies for improvement of patients’ serum cholesterol and adherence to the recommended therapies have been explored. The purpose of this evidence based project is to compare cholesterol management outcomes in patients cared for by a nurse practitioner, with lipid management certification, to patients cared for by their …

We evaluated the long-term (1995–2008) trends in foliar and sapwood metabolism, soil solution chemistry and tree mortality rates in response to chronic nitrogen (N) additions to pine and hardwood stands at the Harvard Forest Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site. Common stress-related metabolites like polyamines (PAs), free amino acids (AAs) and inorganic elements were analyzed for control, low N (LN, 50 kg NH4NO3 ha−1 year−1) and high N (HN, 150 kg NH4NO3 ha−1 year−1) treatments. In the pine stands, partitioning of excess N into foliar PAs and AAs increased with both N treatments until 2002. By 2005, several of these …

Milk proteins within their structure and sequence, contain peptides that exhibit antithrombotic, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, and other bioactivities. These peptides are released as the enzymes cleave milk proteins at certain locations of the amino acid chains. In this research, four different substrates were hydrolyzed with the gastrointestinal enzymes, pepsin and trypsin. The substrates were buttermilk (BM) and whey buttermilk (WBM), which are waste products of butter and cheese production, and supercritical CO2 fluid (SFE) treated buttermilk (S-BM) and whey buttermilk (S-WBM). SFE acts as a solvent which removes triglycerides from the substrates and changes the overall composition of samples. …

Firm Size, Foreign Exposure And Inequality In Wage: A Decomposition Analysis, Satis Devkota, Kul Kapri, Mukti Upadhyay
College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research
This study uses pooled cross-section data from two large surveys of firms in Nepal to determine wage inequality. Applying an inequality decomposition procedure, the estimated wage inequality is then attributed to various factors that affect the labor demand function in the country. We find that firm size and exposure of firms to international trade are among the factors showing statistical significance in affecting wage disparity in Nepal. To the extent wage inequality can be attributed to the factors considered in this study, firm size alone accounts for 55 to 84 percent of the inequality depending on the size indicators such …

Aspen and climate change: Recent mortality portends bad news
William R. L. Anderegg
I grew up camping, fishing, and hunting in the aspen forests of southwestern Colorado. When I returned to these forests for my Ph.D. research, however, I saw that broad regions of the forests I remembered were dying, white-bark skeletons standing still against the blue mountain sky. I remember staring in shock at these forests and thinking, “What is going on here? What does this mean for the future of aspen?”
