Theses and Dissertations
Effects of the in ovo injection of Inovocox EM1 vaccine (EM1 vaccine) suspended in commercial diluent on developing broiler embryos were investigated in 3 trials. Effects of the EM1vaccine administered by in ovo injection on broiler embryogenesis and posthatch performance was determined by evaluating site of injection (SOI), embryo staging (ES), hatchability, and chick quality parameters. Oocyst output, microscopic lesion scores, and grow-out performance were further examined through day 35 posthatch. In these studies, it was shown that oocyst output began at day 3 posthatch (6 days post-injection), and peaked at day 7 posthatch (10 days post-injection). The EM1 vaccine …
Estimation Of Deer Damage To Soybean Production In Mississippi: A Spatial And Temporal Context, Gathel Caleb Hinton
Estimation Of Deer Damage To Soybean Production In Mississippi: A Spatial And Temporal Context, Gathel Caleb Hinton
Theses and Dissertations
Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) are one of Mississippi’s most profitable agricultural crops. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginiaus) damage soybean every year due to the plant’s high palatability, digestibility and nutritional content. I estimated the amount of damage (browsing and loss of yield) caused by deer within 5 soybean fields in eastern Mississippi and compared damage to the number of deer using each field during the 2012 and 2013 growing seasons. I assessed the effectiveness of the chemical repellent Hinder on soybean. While deer did affect soybean height, soybean yield remained unaffected during both years of my study. Given the results …
Improvements To Broiler Production Through Amino Acid Digestibility And Feed Additives, Cameron Mario Cardenas
Improvements To Broiler Production Through Amino Acid Digestibility And Feed Additives, Cameron Mario Cardenas
Theses and Dissertations
Improvements to broiler production can be made through the means of nutrition and preventative health care. Formulating diets based on a digestible amino acid (AA) basis decreases feed cost and improves bird performance by providing a more accurate diet based on the bird’s specific production or age nutrient requirements. The apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) assay utilized in Experiment 1 demonstrated inconsistent results for age effects on AIAAD of an animal by-product blends for specific AA or age. Increasing pathogenic resistance and consumer’s push on the market, has caused integrators to incorporate alternative medications or inclusion strategies to coccidiosis …
Integrated Agronomic Management Practices For Tall Fescue In Mississippi, Patton J. Slusher
Integrated Agronomic Management Practices For Tall Fescue In Mississippi, Patton J. Slusher
Theses and Dissertations
Tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus), is a cool season perennial that provides grazing into the early summer months for southern livestock. Grazing the tall fescue variety, Kentucky-31, has negative effects on animal health, particularly after jointing. Two studies were arranged as randomized complete blocks in a split-plot design, with three replicates to compare: the effect of ten herbicides on seedhead suppression, or the effect of inter-seeding legumes [white clover (Trifolium repens) or alfafla (Medicago sativa)] coupled with nitrogen supplementation on fescue yield and forage nutritive value. The herbicides imazethapyr + 2,4-D and without, metsulfuron + chlorsulfuron, reduced seedheads emergence, but not …
Health Motivation For Purchasing Local Foods In The Southeastern United States, Sudha Thapaliya
Health Motivation For Purchasing Local Foods In The Southeastern United States, Sudha Thapaliya
Theses and Dissertations
Health motivation is found to be a significant driver of local foods purchase (Maples et al., 2013; Onozaka, Nurse, and McFadden, 2010), yet it remains unclear what specific health aspects determine consumer purchase decisions. We study the specific health factors focusing on six particular diseases: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, back/joint pain and Alzheimer’s/dementia to find out whether a relationship exists between disease incidences and consumer decisions to buy local foods. We examine two separate decisions of whether and how frequently southeastern consumers buy local foods in a two-step decision framework known as Double Hurdle model. Results indicate that cancer, …
Evaluation Of Hybrids, Planting Dates, And Planting Densities On Corn Growth And Yield Under Rainfed Systems In Mississippi, Matthew W. Hock
Evaluation Of Hybrids, Planting Dates, And Planting Densities On Corn Growth And Yield Under Rainfed Systems In Mississippi, Matthew W. Hock
Theses and Dissertations
Improved hybrid genetics and more efficient farming techniques have increased corn (Zea mays L.) production and grain yields for Mid-South farmers. Early planting is one technique to mitigate heat and drought stress that negatively influence grain production. The first objective was: a) determine the effect of early planting on grain yield, b) to determine the effects on physiological characteristics and c) determine if some hybrids are better suited for early planting. Data suggest there were yield advantages for early planted treatments. Starkville 2014 yields exhibited the greatest reduction of .80 Mg ha-1 for each week that planting was delayed. A …
Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty
Evolutionary And Ecological Causes And Consequences Of Trophic Niche Variation In Ursids, Diana Jean Raper Lafferty
Theses and Dissertations
Individual variation and fitness are the cornerstones of evolution by natural selection. The trophic niche represents an important source of phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Although individual variation is fundamental to species-level ecological and evolutionary change, individual variation is often ignored in population-level approaches to wildlife ecology, conservation and management. Failing to link individual resource use to fitness or to biological outcomes related to fitness limits us to managing for the average resource needs of a population, which may be insufficient for protecting the diversity of resource use within populations and the underlying eco-evolutionary processes that generate …
Exploring The Role Of Dopamine In Stress Response And Aging In Drosophila Melanogaster - Implications For Neurodegenerative Diseases, Marley Elyse Hanna
Exploring The Role Of Dopamine In Stress Response And Aging In Drosophila Melanogaster - Implications For Neurodegenerative Diseases, Marley Elyse Hanna
Theses and Dissertations
Dopamine (DA) is a catecholamine that is involved in several neural functions such as modulation of locomotor behaviors, arousal states to appetitive aversive learning and memory. The relationships between DA, stress response and aging are unclear. This thesis examines numerous physiological, behavioral and biochemical parameters following perturbations in DA synthesis and transport in the Drosophila melanogaster model system. Intriguingly, elevated DA pools appear to confer protection, while depleted DA levels or transport increase susceptibility to oxidative insult. Resistance to oxidative stress in mutants with elevated DA levels was attributed to a significant up-regulation of glutathione S-transferase Omega-1. A sexually dimorphic …

A Functional Genomics Analysis Of Glycine Max Vesicle Membrane Fusion Genes In Relation To Infection By Heterodera Glycine, Keshav Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN), a major pathogen of soybean worldwide, causes huge losses in soybean production. Various approaches including cloning of genes to combat this devastating disease help to better understand the cellular function and immune responses of plants. Membrane fusion genes are the important regulatory parts of vesicular transport system, which works through packaging of intracellular compounds and delivering them to apoplast or nematode feeding sites to induce an incompatible reaction. The incompatible nature of membrane fusion proteins such as SNAP25, Munc18, Syntaxin, Synaptobrevin, NSF, Synaptotagmin and alpha-SNAP are conserved in eukaryotes and regulate the intracellular function to combat …
The Future Of Food: Identifying Genetic Mechanisms Affecting Sorghum Protein Digestibility, Hailey Edmondson, Michael Busche
The Future Of Food: Identifying Genetic Mechanisms Affecting Sorghum Protein Digestibility, Hailey Edmondson, Michael Busche
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
The demand to produce high-yielding crops grows exponentially with the ever-expanding world population, and with this comes the obligation to examine the actual impact that these crops will have in areas with the most need. Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, cannot support many of the otherwise staple agricultural crops due to climatic limitations. Sorghum, a heat-tolerant and drought-hearty grain source, is used as a primary cereal crop in regions of sub- Saharan Africa. However, sorghum grain is known to have a significantly lower protein digestibility rate compared to other common cereal grains. Cooked sorghum, in particular, has decreased levels of protein …

The city of Gary, Indiana, has experienced an economic downturn in recent years that has led to an unemployment rate that is 2.5 times higher than the national average. In addition, Lake County, which includes the city of Gary, is currently one of the two unhealthiest counties in the state of Indiana. Documented poor health behaviors in this area highlight the need to change how at-risk communities access health care. Community HealthNet (CHN) is a federally funded clinic with five locations in Lake County and a vision to provide accessible, affordable, and quality medical services. Since 1998, CHN has made …
Reducing Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease: Exploring The Effects Of Quercetin On The Contractile Force Of Vascular Smooth Muscle, Puja Banerjee
Reducing Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease: Exploring The Effects Of Quercetin On The Contractile Force Of Vascular Smooth Muscle, Puja Banerjee
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Calcium plays an important role in regulating the contraction of smooth muscles. Membrane potential of the smooth muscles regulates the smooth muscle contractility through variation in Ca2+ influx with the assistance of the voltage-operated Ca2+ channel. Using the porcine pulmonary arteries (PPA) as the model system, the effect of the antioxidant quercetin on the regulation of pulmonary arteries was investigated in the presence and absence of calcium. It was hypothesized that quercetin reduces the contractile force in PPA by limiting Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) without imposing any effect on the voltage-operated channel (VOC). However, …

Sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose are important soluble sugars in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds. Seed sucrose is a desirable trait for taste and flavor. Raffinose and stachyose are undesirable in diets of monogastric animals, acting as anti-nutritional factors that cause flatulence and abdominal discomfort. Therefore, reducing raffinose and stachyose biosynthesis is considered as a key quality trait goal in soy food and feed industries. The objective of this study was to identify genomic regions containing quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling sucrose, raffinose, and stachyose in a set of 92 F5:7 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between …

Background: Avocado (Persea americana) is an economically important tropical fruit considered to be a good source of fatty acids. Despite its importance, the molecular and cellular characterization of biochemical and developmental processes in avocado is limited due to the lack of transcriptome and genomic information.
Results: The transcriptomes of seeds, roots, stems, leaves, aerial buds and flowers were determined using different sequencing platforms. Additionally, the transcriptomes of three different stages of fruit ripening (pre-climacteric, climacteric and post-climacteric) were also analyzed. The analysis of the RNAseqatlas presented here reveals strong differences in gene expression patterns between different organs, …

Behind At The Starting Line: Poverty Among Hispanic Infants, Daniel T. Lichter, Scott R. Sanders, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Daniel Lichter, Scott Sanders, and Kenneth Johnson examine the economic circumstances of Hispanic infants using the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey annual microdata files from 2006 through 2010. They report that a disproportionate share of Hispanic infants start life’s race behind the starting line, poor and disadvantaged—an important finding because the proportion of all U.S. births that are Hispanic is growing rapidly. The poverty risk is especially high among rural Hispanic infants and those in new destinations. Despite higher poverty risks, Hispanic infants receive less governmental assistance. High Hispanic infant poverty has immediate and long-term consequences …

- Anthropogenic disturbances involving land use change, climate disruption, pollution and invasive species have been shown to impact immune function of wild animals. These immune changes have direct impacts on the fitness of impacted animals and, also, potentially indirect effects on other species and on ecological processes, notably involving the spread of infectious disease. Here, we investigate whether the selective loss of large wildlife can also drive changes in immune function of other consumer species.
- Using a long-standing large-scale exclosure experiment in East Africa, we investigated the effects of selective removal of large wildlife on multiple measures of immune function in …
