Antidepressants often disrupt sleep. Vortioxetine, a multimodal antidepressant acting through serotonin (5-HT) transporter (SERT) inhibition, 5-HT 5-HTand 5-HTreceptor antagonism, 5-HTreceptor partial agonism, and 5-HTreceptor agonism, had fewer incidences of sleep-related adverse events reported in depressed patients. In the accompanying paper a polysomnographic electroencephalography (sleep-EEG) study of vortioxetine and paroxetine in healthy subjects indicated that at low/intermediate levels of SERT occupancy, vortioxetine affected rapid eye movement (REM) sleep differently than paroxetine. Here we investigated clinically meaningful doses (80-90% SERT occupancy) of vortioxetine and paroxetine on sleep-EEG in rats to further elucidate the serotoninergic receptor mechanisms mediating this difference. Cortical EEG, electromyography …

Light is often reported to enhance plant nitrate reductase (NR) activity; we have identified a context in which light strongly suppresses NR activity. In vitro NR activity measurements of laboratory-grown seedlings showed strong suppression of nitrate-induced NR activity in cotyledon, hypocotyl, and root tissues of Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacquin; robust NR activity accumulated in nitrate-induced tissues in the dark, but was absent or significantly reduced in tissues exposed to light during the incubation. The suppressive mechanism appears to act at a point after nitrate perception; tissues pre-incubated with nitrate in the light were potentiated and developed NR activity more rapidly …

Clinical Supervision In Allied Health In Australia: A Model Of Allied Health Clinical Supervision Based On Practitioner Experience, Sue Fitzpatrick, Megan Smith, Clare Wilding
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this manuscript is to identify key elements of allied health clinical supervision based on allied health practitioner’s experiences. Method: This study was conducted with qualitative methodology, including content analysis, and draws on hermeneutic interpretation of texts. Data were collected through an online survey in an Australian health service and subsequent focus groups. Results: Findings revealed four key dimensions including accessibility of regular clinical supervision, relationships between the supervisor and supervisee, clarity about the purpose, and roles and a focus on meeting the supervisee’s needs; these dimensions were central to the allied health practitioner’s …

Dietary resistant starch impact on intestinal microbiome and improving healthspan is the topic of this review. In the elderly population, dietary fiber intake is lower than recommended. Dietary resistant starch as a source of fiber produces a profound change in gut microbiota and fermentation in animal models of aging. Dietary resistant starch has the potential for improving healthspan in the elderly through multiple mechanisms as follows: (1) enhancing gut microbiota profile and production of short-chain fatty acids, (2) improving gut barrier function, (3) increasing gut peptides that are important in glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism, and (4) mimicking many of …

Balance Of Power, Domestic Violence And Health Consequences: Evidence From Demographic And Health Survey Of Nepal, Soumi Chowdhury, Alok Bohara, Brady Horn
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
A large literature studying Domestic Violence (DV) has documented a complex relationship between intimate partner violence, domestic risk factors, women empowerment and health outcomes. In this paper we attempt to disentangle this complex relationship using data drawn from Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, 2011. Empirically, a two-equation system is estimated, where the first equation models the relationship between domestic violence and health outcomes (physical injuries) whereas the second equation models the relationship of domestic violence to domestic risk factors and women’s empowerment. The study finds evidence that both education and cooperative environments lessen the likelihood of violence. Additionally, a number …

Farmers’ Perception Of Climate Change And Willingness To Pay For Weather-Index Insurance In Bahunepati, Nepal, Wenmei Guo, Alok Bohara
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
This paper is a pioneering study of investigating effects of farmers’ perception of climate change on their willingness to pay (WTP) for a weather-index crop insurance in Nepal. We use contingent valuation data collected from a primary household survey conducted in Bahunepati, Nepal to examine the topic. The research improves on the previous literature by analyzing two crop insurance products which incorporate both crop and livestock.

Analysis Of Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students' Experience With Thickened Liquids, Mary Gorham-Rowan, Jade Coston
Analysis Of Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Students' Experience With Thickened Liquids, Mary Gorham-Rowan, Jade Coston
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Thickened liquids are frequently recommended for patients with dysphagia to minimize aspiration. When discussing the use of thickened liquids with graduate students in Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD), it is beneficial to discuss the potential effect(s) of this dietary recommendation. Graduate level preparation involving first-hand experience with thickened liquids may help future speech-language pathologists (SLPs) develop a more complete understanding of the effects of diet modification. The purpose of the current study was to examine the reactions of graduate students in CSD to a brief period of thickened liquid use as an experiential learning activity. Methods: Sixty-eight graduate students …

Are Faith-Based, Long-Term Care Nonprofit Organizations More Effective? A Survey Study Of Nursing Homes In Virginia, Bulent Ucar, Zubeyir Nisanci
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
The role of religion in effectiveness of organizations has been part of serious debates among policy makers, practitioners and scholars after President George W. Bush's creation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives in 2001.
The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether being a faith affiliated nursing home influences performance. The secondary purpose is, regardless of ownership type - religiously affiliated or secular - to investigate if more religiously involved nursing homes perform better than their less religiously involved counterparts. Performance is measured based on criterion put in place by the Center for Medicare …

Background Marine environments are inherently dynamic, yet marine predators are often long-lived and employ strategies where consistency, individual specialization, routine migrations, and spatial memory are key components to their foraging and life-history strategies. Intrinsic determinates of animal movements are linked to physiological and life-history traits (e.g. sex, colony, experience), while extrinsic influences occur as the result of an animal’s interactions with either other animals or the environment (e.g. prey availability, weather, competition). Knowledge of the factors affecting animal movements is critical to understand energetic bottlenecks and population dynamics. Here, we attempt to understand the interaction of some of these factors …
