Robust Fast Direct Integral Equation Solver For Quasi-Periodic Scattering Problems With A Large Number Of Layers, Min Hyung Cho, Alex H. Barnett
Robust Fast Direct Integral Equation Solver For Quasi-Periodic Scattering Problems With A Large Number Of Layers, Min Hyung Cho, Alex H. Barnett
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present a new boundary integral formulation for time-harmonic wave diffraction from two-dimensional structures with many layers of arbitrary periodic shape, such as multilayer dielectric gratings in TM polarization. Our scheme is robust at all scattering parameters, unlike the conventional quasi-periodic Green’s function method which fails whenever any of the layers approaches a Wood anomaly. We achieve this by a decomposition into near- and far-field contributions. The former uses the free-space Green’s function in a second-kind integral equation on one period of the material interfaces and their immediate left and right neighbors; the latter uses proxy point sources and small …
Robust And Efficient Solution Of The Drum Problem Via Nyström Approximation Of The Fredholm Determinant, Lin Zhao, Alex Barnett
Robust And Efficient Solution Of The Drum Problem Via Nyström Approximation Of The Fredholm Determinant, Lin Zhao, Alex Barnett
Dartmouth Scholarship
The “drum problem''---finding the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary condition---has many applications, yet remains challenging for general domains when high accuracy or high frequency is needed. Boundary integral equations are appealing for large-scale problems, yet certain difficulties have limited their use. We introduce the following two ideas to remedy this: (1) We solve the resulting nonlinear eigenvalue problem using Boyd's method for analytic root-finding applied to the Fredholm determinant, and we show that this is many times faster than the usual iterative minimization of a singular value. (2) We fix the problem of spurious exterior resonances …

(3+2)-Cycloaddition Reactions Of Oxyallyl Cations, Jimmy Wu, Hui Li
Dartmouth Scholarship
The (3+2)-cycloaddition reaction involving oxyallyl cations has proven to be a versatile and efficient approach for the construction of five-membered carbo- and heterocycles, which are prevalent frameworks in natural products and pharmaceuticals. The following article will provide a brief summary of recent disclosures on this process featuring chemo-, regio- and diastereoselective oxyallyl cycloadditions with both electron-rich and electron-deficient 2π partners.
A Portrait Of Hope: A Beginning Teacher Learns About Community, Kathleen Cowin
A Portrait Of Hope: A Beginning Teacher Learns About Community, Kathleen Cowin
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
A question listed in the call for this issue was: What are the sources and examples of hope for teachers, school leaders, and students as experienced and gained through learning,…, [and] community connections? This portrait of a beginning teacher’s experiences learning about community as she navigates her first year of teaching provides a way for readers to think about how to develop community within a classroom and school, the roles members of a school community play in community development, and how mentoring may influence community building. Through portraiture methodology (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997) the reader will glimpse a deeper view …

Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick
Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
"Freedom" is a phenomenon in the natural world. This phenomenon - and indirectly the question of free will - is explored using a variety of systems-theoretic ideas. It is argued that freedom can emerge only in systems that are partially detennined and partially random, and that freedom is a matter of degree. The paper considers types of freedom and their conditions of possibility in simple living systems and in complex living systems that have modeling (cognitive) subsystems. In simple living systems, types of freedom include independence from fixed materiality, internal rather than external detennination, activeness that is unblocked and holistic, …
Mind And Life: Is The Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception Of Nature False?, Martin Zwick
Mind And Life: Is The Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception Of Nature False?, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
A partial review of Thomas Nagel's book, Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist NeoDarwinian Conception of Nature Is Almost Certainly False is used to articulate some systems-theoretic ideas about the challenge of understanding subjective experience. The article accepts Nagel' s view that reductionist materialism fails as an approach to this challenge, but argues that seeking an explanation of mind based on emergence is more plausible than one based on panpsychism, which Nagel favors. However, the article proposes something similar to Nagel's neutral monism by positing a hierarchy of information processes that span the domains of matter, life, and mind. As …
Gaining Policy Insight With A System Dynamics Model Of Pain Medicine Prescribing, Diversion And Abuse, Wayne Wakeland, Alexandra E. Nielsen, Teresa D. Schmidt
Gaining Policy Insight With A System Dynamics Model Of Pain Medicine Prescribing, Diversion And Abuse, Wayne Wakeland, Alexandra E. Nielsen, Teresa D. Schmidt
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Misuse of pain medicine is a leading cause of accidental deaths in the USA—over 15,000 deaths annually. A system dynamics model was developed and used to study the impact of three types of policy interventions to reduce adverse outcomes. Besides medical usage, the model also includes the diversion of pain medicines and their nonmedical use. Model behavior compared favourably with historical data at multiple points in the system. A prescription drug monitoring program intervention reduced nonmedical overdoses through supply restriction, and an intervention to reduce popularity of nonmedical usage reduced nonmedical overdoses by curtailing demand. A tamper-resistant drug formulation intervention …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
This article provides an overview of the design, implementation, revision and informal assessment of an information literacy curriculum embedded in a new University Foundations (UF) program at a mid‐sized public university. The library information literacy sessions incorporated teambased learning and Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) elements using iPads. Each session provided students an opportunity to develop and apply information literacy skills, and included critical thinking questions which led students to think about underlying concepts. A focus group with the librarians assessed the UF library curriculum, its impact on student engagement, and the training activities for librarian teaching preparation.

The Cacaio Project: Education For Environmental, Aesthetic And Moral Development, Atila T. Calvente
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Economic inequalities, institutional awkwardness, cultural underdevelopment, social exclusion, a fast rate of environmental, ecological, and biodiversity degradation have all been at the root of historic social injustice and structural poverty in Brazil for centuries. Human development and emancipation in this context should be approached as a set of non-formal educational practices to promote better learning and dignity. These would become potent means for reducing material poverty and selfish individual behavior, and for improving holistic modes of education and culture. Non-traditional educational practices can have an important influence in state-run schools, as well as in private schools, by enhancing resilience and …

Impact Of Spatial Aliasing On Sea-Ice Thickness Measurements, Cathleen Geiger, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Jesse P. Samluk, E Rachel Bernstein, Jacqueline Richter-Menge
Dartmouth Scholarship
We explore spatial aliasing of non-Gaussian distributions of sea-ice thickness. Using a heuristic model and >1000 measurements, we show how different instrument footprint sizes and shapes can cluster thickness distributions into artificial modes, thereby distorting frequency distribution, making it difficult to compare and communicate information across spatial scales. This problem has not been dealt with systematically in sea ice until now, largely because it appears to incur no significant change in integrated thickness which often serves as a volume proxy. Concomitantly, demands are increasing for thickness distribution as a resource for modeling, monitoring and forecasting air–sea fluxes and growing human …

An Ornithological Investigation Of The Relationships Among Species Assemblages In Diverse Landscapes In Portland, Oregon, Trevor Attenberg
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
This study involves geographic variables of the urban landscape and how they affect bird species assemblage. I utilized bird point count data from observation sites in the Portland, OR metropolitan region provided by Portland Environmental Services. Species data and its relationship with environmental variables were evaluated using Bray-Curtis Dissimilarity measurements together with Non-metric Multidimensional scaling (NMDS) to provide a clear image of the spatial relationships between sites. Land classification, water and canopy in 500 m buffers were quantified in order to describe important geographic variability among collection areas of bird data. Patterns indicating spatial trends in the urban landscape emerged. …
Explaining The "Pulse Of Protoplasm": The Search For Molecular Mechanisms Of Protoplasmic Streaming, Michael Dietrich
Explaining The "Pulse Of Protoplasm": The Search For Molecular Mechanisms Of Protoplasmic Streaming, Michael Dietrich
Dartmouth Scholarship
Explanations for protoplasmic streaming began with appeals to contraction in the eighteenth century and ended with appeals to contraction in the twentieth. During the intervening years, biologists proposed a diverse array of mechanisms for streaming motions. This paper focuses on the re-emergence of contraction among the molecular mechanisms proposed for protoplasmic streaming during the twentieth century. The revival of contraction is a result of a broader transition from colloidal chemistry to a macromolecular approach to the chemistry of proteins, the recognition of the phenomena of shuttle streaming and the pulse of protoplasm, and the influential analogy between protoplasmic streaming and …

Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman
Periodic State Revivals In Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Emerging optical and quantum computers require hardware capable of coherent transport of and operations on quantum states. Here, we investigate finite optical waveguide arrays with linear coupling as means of efficient and compact coherent state transfer. Coherent transfer with periodic state revivals is enabled by engineering coupling coefficients between neighbouring waveguides to yield commensurate eigenvalue spectrum. Particular cases of finite arrays have been actively studied to achieve the perfect state transfer by mirroring the input into the output state.
We explore a much wider scope of coherent propagation and revivals of both the state amplitude and phase. We analytically solve …

Teratomas are unusual tumours that derived from totipotent cells with their origin from more than one or usually all three germ cells. Here authors are presenting a case of primary retroperitoneal tumour that is a rare clinical entity. A 19-year-old male presented with right lumbar pain and was found to have complex cyst with large calcification in right adrenal gland on imaging. Intraoperatively, he was found to have a solid mass with areas of soft consistency, which was excised en bloc. On gross examination, the cyst contained pieces of bone, few teeth, and hairs entangled in mucinous material. On histological …

The construction and application of biological network models is an approach that offers a holistic way to understand biological processes involved in disease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive inflammatory disease of the airways for which therapeutic options currently are limited after diagnosis, even in its earliest stage. COPD network models are important tools to better understand the biological components and processes underlying initial disease development. With the increasing amounts of literature that are now available, crowdsourcing approaches offer new forms of collaboration for researchers to review biological findings, which can be applied to the construction and verification …

Technology In Transformative Learning Environments, Michael Hamlin
Touro College Los Angeles Publications and Research
Health science educators are increasingly bombarded with proposals to integrate instructional technology into the curriculum to enhance learning. While it may be that providing more options for delivering instruction in different formats provide instructional benefit for educators, the unique nature and goals of health science education require a systematic and integrative approach when instructional technology is introduced into the curriculum. Providing support for transformative learning pedagogies and high-level learning that assists students in developing a reflective professional identity should be a major goal of instructional technology adoption. This chapter develops a framework that health care educators can use to guide …
Default Rules In Functional Logic Programs, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus
Default Rules In Functional Logic Programs, Sergio Antoy, Michael Hanus
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In functional logic programs, rules are applicable independently of textual order, i.e., any rule can potentially be used to evaluate an expression. This is similar to logic languages and opposite to functional languages, e.g., Haskell enforces a strict sequential interpretation of rules. However, in some situations it is convenient to express alternatives by means of compact default rules. Although default rules are often used in functional programs, the non-deterministic nature of functional logic programs does not allow to directly transfer this concept from functional to functional logic languages in a meaningful way. In this paper we propose a new concept …

We define a compilation scheme for a constructor-based, strongly-sequential, graph rewriting system which shortcuts some needed steps. The object code is another constructor-based graph rewriting system. This system is normalizing for the original system when using an innermost strategy. Consequently, the object code can be easily implemented by eager functions in a variety of programming languages. We modify this object code in a way that avoids total or partial construction of the contracta of some needed steps of a computation. When computing normal forms in this way, both memory consumption and execution time are reduced compared to ordinary rewriting computations …

Usage Based Topology For Dcns, Qing Yi, Suresh Singh
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Many data center network topologies are designed to provide full bisection bandwidth for tens of thousands of servers in order to achieve high network throughput and server agility. However, the utilization rate of DCNs on average is below 10%, which results in a significant waste of network resources and energy. Many researchers propose consolidating network traffic flows to maximize the set of idle network equipment and switching them to low power mode to save energy. In this paper, we propose using skinnier network topologies to meet performance requirements of realistic loads thus saving not only energy but capital cost as …

Stream processing addresses the needs of real-time applications. Transaction processing addresses the coordination and safety of short atomic computations. Heretofore, these two modes of operation existed in separate, stove-piped systems. In this work, we attempt to fuse the two computational paradigms in a single system called S-Store. In this way, S-Store can simultaneously accommodate OLTP and streaming applications. We present a simple transaction model for streams that integrates seamlessly with a traditional OLTP system. We chose to build S-Store as an extension of H-Store, an open-source, in-memory, distributed OLTP database system. By implementing S-Store in this way, we can make …

A noise map facilitates the monitoring of environmental noise pollution in urban areas. It can raise citizen awareness of noise pollution levels, and aid in the development of mitigation strategies to cope with the adverse effects. However, state-of-the-art techniques for rendering noise maps in urban areas are expensive and rarely updated (for months or even years), as they rely on population and traffic models rather than on real data. Smart phone based urban sensing can be leveraged to create an open and inexpensive platform for rendering up-to-date noise maps. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and performance evaluation …
