Writing In The Geometry Classroom, Amy Lynn Rome
LSU Master's Theses
This study sought a time-efficient way to implement writing in ninth-grade Geometry. Students wrote responses to five expository writing prompts spread out over the spring semester of the 2014-2015 school year. Students’ first attempts were graded and returned to them along with feedback in the form of a teacher-written exemplar. Students rewrote assignments to improve their grades. All first and second attempts were collected and evaluated. We found that students were more successful after seeing the exemplar. Moreover, on assignments occurring later in the semester, more students were able to score in the top categories of the writing assignments on …
An Efficient Fault Location Algorithm For Shipboard Power Systems, Pedram Jahanmard
An Efficient Fault Location Algorithm For Shipboard Power Systems, Pedram Jahanmard
LSU Master's Theses
The Shipboard Power System (SPS) supply energy to sophisticated systems for navigation, communication, weapons, and operation. Due to the ship’s critical operating condition, faults can be very detrimental. Faults in the SPS may happen because of failure of electrical components or by damages that happen during a battle. These faults may interrupt the paths for supplying energy to loads that are not damaged. To enhance survivability of naval ships, SPS requires an efficient fault location algorithm in order to locate and clear the fault as well as provide an alternative path to supply energy to the loads that are not …

Biofuel Production From Chinese Tallow Tree Seeds Using Microwave Technology, Mohamad Barekati Goudarzi
LSU Master's Theses
In-situ transesterification (simultaneous extraction and transesterification) of Chinese tallow tree seeds into methyl esters using two microwave systems were investigated in this study. In the first part, utilizing a batch system, parameters tested were catalyst concentration (1-4 wt.%), solvent ratio (2-6 v/w), reaction time (15-60 min) and temperature (50-70°C). A high degree of oil extraction and efficient conversion of oil to biodiesel were found in the proposed range. The process was further optimized in terms of product yields and conversion rates using Dohlert optimization methodology. Based on the experimental results and statistical analysis, the optimal production yield conditions for this …
Language Processing And The Artificial Mind: Teaching Code Literacy In The Humanities, Jerry Scott Weltman
Language Processing And The Artificial Mind: Teaching Code Literacy In The Humanities, Jerry Scott Weltman
LSU Master's Theses
Humanities majors often find themselves in jobs where they either manage programmers or work with them in close collaboration. These interactions often pose difficulties because specialists in literature, history, philosophy, and so on are not usually "code literate." They do not understand what tasks computers are best suited to, or how programmers solve problems. Learning code literacy would be a great benefit to humanities majors, but the traditional computer science curriculum is heavily math oriented, and students outside of science and technology majors are often math averse. Yet they are often interested in language, linguistics, and science fiction. This thesis …
Hybridization And Population Structure Of Western Gulf Coast Mottled Ducks, Robert Joseph Ford
Hybridization And Population Structure Of Western Gulf Coast Mottled Ducks, Robert Joseph Ford
LSU Master's Theses
Rates of hybridization between species that do not normally interbreed have increased due to human impacts on natural environments, such as habitat alteration or introductions of non-native species. Human-induced hybridization can be detrimental to wildlife and contribute to species extinctions. In Florida, feral Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) hybridize with endemic Mottled Ducks (A. fulvigula) at rates close to 9%. However, levels of hybridization between these two species have not been extensively examined in the western Gulf Coast (from Alabama to northern Mexico) despite the potential impact on the Mottled Duck lineage. In this study, I examined the degree of hybridization between …

The Implementation Of Two Cooperative Learning Structures, Rally Coach And Teams-Games-Tournaments, In High School Chemistry Courses, Joanna Miketinas Stewart
LSU Master's Theses
To combat the obstacles that students experience in chemistry, two cooperative learning strategies, Rally Coach and Teams-Games-Tournaments, were implemented in five chemistry courses at East Ascension High School. Rally Coach called for two students to work as a pair and peer tutor to successfully complete practice problems for each lesson. Teams-Games-Tournaments required students to work in groups of four to complete practice problems and compete for team points as a review. Every student experienced both learning strategies. A comparison was made to see which cooperative learning strategy better helped student performance, including comparisons of effects on different student demographics and …
Using Stormwater Modeling In Iterative Site Design: An Integration Of Techniques From Engineering And Landscape Architecture, Brooke Erin Morris
Using Stormwater Modeling In Iterative Site Design: An Integration Of Techniques From Engineering And Landscape Architecture, Brooke Erin Morris
LSU Master's Theses
Landscape Architects currently do not have an efficient method for including stormwater quantities in early stages of their design process. With stormwater control infrastructure and theory rapidly shifting in favor of stormwater management with Green Infrastructure or Low Impact Development technologies (LIDs), landscape architects and planners are increasingly making layout and sizing decisions for stormwater design. Due to the development of modeling tools, it is now possible to rapidly produce quantifiable stormwater values for complex site designs at a range of scales. This paper proposes a methodology for the utilization of the EPA – Stormwater Management Model (SWMM), in conjunction …
Metacommunity Dynamics And The Biogeography Of Central Louisiana Crayfishes, William Robert Budnick
Metacommunity Dynamics And The Biogeography Of Central Louisiana Crayfishes, William Robert Budnick
LSU Master's Theses
The greatest diversity of crayfishes, especially of rare Orconectes species, is found in the central Louisiana watersheds (Red River, Mermentau, Calcasieu, and Vermillion-Teche), and most species are widely distributed among the drainages. The purpose of this research was to lay groundwork for species distribution and metacommunity modelling for crayfishes in this region. To address this goal, two field studies were performed in the summers of 2013 and 2014, as well as an indoor laboratory study. Analyses of broadly distributed species indicated no significant correlations between species abundances and habitat variables nor any significant environmental gradients for those species. Within-drainage variability …
La Grad Act’S Effects On Developmental Faculty: A Case Study, Patricia Kuhlman Van Brunt
La Grad Act’S Effects On Developmental Faculty: A Case Study, Patricia Kuhlman Van Brunt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Over the past 50 years, state legislatures have placed mandates on higher education institutions to lower attrition, thereby increasing student retention and completion. This study investigated and sought to understand the relationship between the Louisiana Granting Resources and Autonomy for Diplomas Act, or the LA GRAD Act (2010), and developmental education. More specifically, it focused on the perceptions of the mandate held by developmental education faculty who are employed at a public, urban Louisiana community college. This study utilized the four-framework approach by Bolman and Deal (2013) to decipher how developmental classrooms, academic departments, and a higher education institution as …
A Test Of The Effectiveness Of The Active Learning Technique Think-Pair-Share In A High School Science Classroom, Michael Francis Lowe
A Test Of The Effectiveness Of The Active Learning Technique Think-Pair-Share In A High School Science Classroom, Michael Francis Lowe
LSU Master's Theses
In this study, the active learning technique think-pair-share was tested in an independent high school non-honors chemistry classroom to see if it was more effective than teaching techniques already being used in the chemistry classes. Two classes of tenth grade chemistry students were combined as a test group and a third class of tenth grade chemistry students acted as the control. Learning gains for pre and post-tests from three different chemistry units were analyzed and no significant difference was found between the results of the control and test groups, indicating that think-pair-share was as effective as teaching methods already in …
Multiscale Modeling Of Particle Transport In Petroleum Reservoirs, Layne Bryan French
Multiscale Modeling Of Particle Transport In Petroleum Reservoirs, Layne Bryan French
LSU Master's Theses
Modeling subsurface particle transport and retention is important for many processes, including sand production, fines migration, and nanoparticle injection. In this study, a pore-scale particle plugging simulator is concurrently coupled with a streamline reservoir simulator to predict the behavior of particles in the subsurface. The coupled simulators march forward in time together. The automated communication between the two models enables the prediction of spatially and time dependent parameters that control the particle transport process. At each time step, the reservoir simulator provides the inlet velocity and particle concentration of the fluid suspension to the pore-scale model which outputs the permeability, …

Essays In Labor Economics, Sukriye Elif Filiz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I present three distinct topics on labor economics that can be read independently from one another. In the first chapter, using matched mother-child data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I investigate the impact of mothers’ involuntary job loss on children’s academic achievement. In the next chapter, I examine the impact of eye and hair color on wages-at-first-job after schooling. In addition, I investigate whether hair color has an impact on the wage-at-the-first-job if the individual resides among people who have similar features. In the last chapter, I examine the impact of unemployment insurance benefit generosity …
Site-Specific Habitat And Landscape Associations Of Rusty Blackbirds Wintering In Louisiana, Sinead Mary Borchert
Site-Specific Habitat And Landscape Associations Of Rusty Blackbirds Wintering In Louisiana, Sinead Mary Borchert
LSU Master's Theses
The Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) has gained notoriety in recent years as one of the fastest declining North American bird species, with a global population loss of as much as 95%. Causes of the decline are not completely understood, but the high rate of forested wetland change in the southeastern United States suggests that wintering habitat degradation may be a primary driver. To better inform management on critical wintering grounds, I surveyed 68 sites in Louisiana where Rusty Blackbirds had been known to occur to address how occupancy changes with habitat type and colonization and extinction rates vary with ground …
The Stratal Architecture Of The False River Point Bar (Lower Mississippi River, La), Alexandra Lechnowskyj
The Stratal Architecture Of The False River Point Bar (Lower Mississippi River, La), Alexandra Lechnowskyj
LSU Master's Theses
The False River point bar system is located roughly thirty miles north of Baton Rouge, LA. It is an oxbow lake cut off from the Mississippi River, and represents a large-scale modern analogue to the ancient systems of northeastern Alberta, Canada, specifically those of the Athabasca Oils Sands. While previous work has been done regarding the general architecture of a point bar, there is still omplexity associated with larger scale systems, as studies have been mostly based on small and medium-scale examples. Examination of the point bar was done through a combination of coring and geophysical logging, followed by software …
Analysis Of Nonlinear Dispersive Model Equations, Jacob Grey
Analysis Of Nonlinear Dispersive Model Equations, Jacob Grey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work we begin with a brief survey of the classical fluid dynamics problem of water waves, and then proceed to derive well known evolution equations via a Hamiltonian Variational approach. This method was first introduced in the seminal work of Walter Craig, et al. \cite{CG}. The distinguishing feature of this scheme is that the Dirichlet-Neumann operator of the fluid domain appears explicitly in the Hamiltonian. In the second and third chapters, we utilize the Hamiltonian perturbation theory introduced in \cite{CG} to derive the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (BBM-KP)equations. Finally, we briefly review the existence theory for their corresponding …
Investigations Into Ecogeomorphodynamics Of Coastal Embryo Dunes At Padre Island National Seashore, Texas, Katherine Anne Renken
Investigations Into Ecogeomorphodynamics Of Coastal Embryo Dunes At Padre Island National Seashore, Texas, Katherine Anne Renken
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is an investigation into the interplay between vegetation and aeolian processes in the coastal embryo dune environment at Padre Island National Seashore, Texas. Vegetation is a geomorphic agent, altering aeolian process dynamics. This research adopted a three-pronged approach to improving our understanding of ecogeomorphodynamics in the coastal environment. The first study analyzed large-scale spatiotemporal trends in the vegetation community of the embryo dune environment in order to contextualize smaller scale aeolian processes. Results of this study demonstrated that there was a clear transition in community assemblage from the seaward edge of the embryo dune zone, where species functioned …

Knots, Skein Theory And Q-Series, Mustafa Hajij
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The tail of a sequence {P_n(q)} of formal power series in Z[q^{-1}][[q]], if it exists, is the formal power series whose first $n$ coefficients agree up to a common sign with the first n coefficients of P_n. The colored Jones polynomial is link invariant that associates to every link in S^3 a sequence of Laurent polynomials. In the first part of this work we study the tail of the unreduced colored Jones polynomial of alternating links using the colored Kauffman skein relation. This gives a natural extension of a result by Kauffman, Murasugi, and Thistlethwaite regarding the highest and lowest …
The Effectiveness Of Online Homework Tutorials As Compared To Pen And Paper Tutorials, Molly Shuman
The Effectiveness Of Online Homework Tutorials As Compared To Pen And Paper Tutorials, Molly Shuman
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if students learn more from completing web based homework (WBHW) compared to completing homework by traditional means with pen and paper. Determining the efficacy of WBHW is important because many schools are being pressured to implement technology in the classroom. To determine the effectiveness of WBHW, student normalized learning gains were calculated from pre and post-test scores for 62 students. Learning gains were then compared when students completed WBHW, traditional homework, or did not complete homework at all, over four units in a high school chemistry class. No difference in learning gains …

Developing Co-Current And Counter-Current Spray Drying Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Simulation Studies To Predict The Quality Of Microencapsulated Fish Oil With Egg White Hydrolysates Powders, Kevin Estuardo Mis Solval
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Eggs are an excellent source of high quality protein containing all essential amino acids (EAA) including leucine. Food-grade protein hydrolysates can enhance the growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Thermal degradation of bioactives normally occurs during microencapsulation by spray drying. Spray drying modeling using computational tools is essential to engineer new food powders and to minimize and thermal degradation of bioactives. The first chapter of this work discusses the optimization of an enzymatic process in terms of reaction temperature, pH, enzyme:substrate ratio, and reaction time using a response surface methodology (RSM) to produce food-grade protein hydrolysates from egg whites (EWH). …
Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Fractal Fluid Distributor, Gongqiang He
Applications Of Cfd Simulations On Fractal Fluid Distributor, Gongqiang He
LSU Master's Theses
Since its emergence in 1970s, process intensification has been attracting extensive research interests from both academic and industrial societies over the years. One good example of process intensification in chemical industry is the optimization of flow distributors. In many chemical processes, the uniformity of flow distributions plays the key role in determining the overall efficiency. Conventional distributors rely on high pressure drop to achieve acceptable flow distribution. With scaling symmetry from fractal, fractal distributors can handle fluid distribution much better than conventional distributors. With the rapid development of computation power and numerical simulation algorithms, Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides us …
Design And Validation Of A Prototype Collimation System With Reduced Applicator Weights For Elekta Electron Therapy Beams, Garrett Michael Pitcher
Design And Validation Of A Prototype Collimation System With Reduced Applicator Weights For Elekta Electron Therapy Beams, Garrett Michael Pitcher
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this study was to design an electron collimation system for Elekta Infinity accelerators with significantly reduced applicator weights, while maintaining acceptable in-field beam flatness and out-of-field leakage dose. The design was restricted to 6-20 MeV beams for 6x6 to 25x25 cm2 applicators at 100 cm SSD with the MLCi2 treatment head. In Aim1, measured off-axis profiles showed that the current Elekta collimation system met dose flatness (4%) and IEC leakage dose specifications in the patient plane for custom 7, 13, and 20 MeV beams at MBPCC. Also, Monte Carlo (MC) calculations based on MBPCC beam models sufficiently …
Topological Dynamics On Compact Phase Spaces, Lieth Abdalateef Majed
Topological Dynamics On Compact Phase Spaces, Lieth Abdalateef Majed
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Our main focus will be to investigate the various facets of what are commonly called dynamical systems or flows, which are triples $(S,X,\pi)$, where $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space and $\pi:S \times X \longrightarrow X$ is a separately continuous action of a semigroup $S$ on $X$. Historically, as was introduced by R.Ellis 1960, the enveloping semigroup, which is a closure of the set of continuous functions on a compact space $X$, was discovered to be an important tool to study dynamical systems. Soon, a realization of the existence of a universal compactification of a phase semigroup with an extended …
A Spatial Analysis Of Obesity And Its Associations With The Built And Natural Environment, Physical Inactivity, And Socioeconomic And Demographic Conditions In The United States Of America, Mustafa Erdem
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity has strong genetic determinants but the genetic composition of the population does not change rapidly. Thus in this study, the major changes in non-genetic factors such as the development of obesogenic environments and shifting socioeconomic status and lifestyle of individuals are hypothesized to increase the risk of obesity. As the prevalence of obesity continue to increase worldwide with substantial attention in the US, a clearer understanding of how spatial associations between obesity and confounding factors are interrelated is crucial to better tackle the issue of obesity. This study employs the ‘global’ and ‘local’ Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) methods …

Biomethane gas (BMG), known for its sustainability, low environmental impact, and high profitability, has received wide attention in recent years. To facilitate the process of making strategic plans for building a BMG production system, this dissertation leverages the mathematical modeling and optimization techniques to minimize the supply chain cost for such a system. Typical elements in a BMG production system consist of the local farms that produce the feedstock, the hubs that collect and store the feedstock produced by farms, the reactors that generate BMG from the feedstock transported from the hubs, the condensers that liquefy the BMG from the …
Classification In The Presence Of Ordered Classes And Weighted Evaluative Attributes, Forrest Justin Osterman
Classification In The Presence Of Ordered Classes And Weighted Evaluative Attributes, Forrest Justin Osterman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We are interested in an important family of problems in the interface of the Multi-Attribute Decision-Making and Data Mining fields. This is a special case of the general classification problem, in which records describing entities of interest have been expressed in terms of a number of evaluative attributes. These attributes are associated with weights of importance, and both the data and the classes are ordinal. Our goal is to use historical records and the corresponding decisions to best estimate the class values of new data points in a way consistent with prior classification decisions, without knowledge of the weights of …
