The Effects Of Diversity Training On Mental Healthcare Professionals, Andrea Elizabeth Theye Oct 2015

The Effects Of Diversity Training On Mental Healthcare Professionals, Andrea Elizabeth Theye

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Previous research has indicated that the United States is experiencing a rapid growth in its racial and ethnic diversity. Although diversity trainings are common place, many of these trainings do not include outcome measurements to ensure that training goals are met and reactions are favorable. The current study expands the research by evaluating the change in attitude, selfreported culturally competent behavior, and knowledge as a result of the training as well as reactions to the training through the use of pre and post-training measures. Mental healthcare workers (n = 47) completed a pretest, received the diversity training, and then completed …

When It Comes To Standing, Two Legs Are Better Than Four, Kelsey Kobil Oct 2015

When It Comes To Standing, Two Legs Are Better Than Four, Kelsey Kobil

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Animal rights activists are currently filing lawsuits naming animals as plaintiffs hoping that courts will grant animals legal personhood status and standing to file lawsuits on their own behalf. Currently, animals are designated as property in the United States. If courts grant animals legal personhood status, animals would no longer be classified as property, but instead would hold the same legal rights as humans.

Several courts have grappled with the issue of granting animals standing to file lawsuits, and--other than a Ninth Circuit decision that was later explicitly dismissed as dicta by the same circuit-all have declined to do so. …

America’S Evolution Of Women And Their Roles In The Intelligence Community, Amy J. Martin Oct 2015

America’S Evolution Of Women And Their Roles In The Intelligence Community, Amy J. Martin

Journal of Strategic Security

The role of women in the Intelligence Community has evolved over time and captures the use of their skills to further assist, perpetuate, and lead intelligence operations globally. This paper serves as a historical overview of some of the techniques of the early female spies and highlights the successes of the modern woman’s contributions to the intelligence mission. Emerging female operations officers often face obstacles: dealing with bias within the bureaucracy, issues of female equality within certain cultures, and experiencing slower rates of promotion. This has meant a lack of females in competitive leadership positions. Female mentors and former intelligence …

Introduction To Forum: The Hemispheric French Atlantic, Michelle Burnham Oct 2015

Introduction To Forum: The Hemispheric French Atlantic, Michelle Burnham

English

“The Hemispheric French Atlantic” begins to suture a transatlantic to a hemispheric spatiality by tracing out the movement of texts, figures, and traditions within a complex and kinetic circulatory system that moves beyond the geometric model imagined by studies of the French Atlantic triangle. In tracking the discourses of politics, literature, and anthropology through a hemispheric French Atlantic space complicated by race and slavery, these five literary critical essays focus on the legacies of violence and promise that radiate through time and space from the Haitian revolutionary moment, spiraling across and beyond the long nineteenth century while circling across and …

Markets, Society And The Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr. Oct 2015

Markets, Society And The Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Most of the popular discussion on the economy remains obsessively focused on the government, its policies and institutions. While it is true that these policies and institutions play a critical role, we do forget that productivity gains which form the cornerstone of economic growth and better living standards are achieved under a given factor endowment through interactions between public policies and institutions, private sector response and behavior, society’s norms and culture and external environment. We should therefore shed light on the societal norms, attitudes and culture and the markets in which the private economic agents operate taking the public policy …

Predicting Autism Over Large-Scale Child Dataset, Arpit Arya

Master's Projects

Data Analytics and Machine learning in healthcare are one of the most emerging and needed fields in current time. Also, a lot of research has been performed and is still being done in this field. In healthcare, gone are those days when only doctor examines and patient listens. Now doctor has a lot of technologies which can assist him and help in accurately diagnosing the disease with which his patient is suffering. The backbone of such technologies is data analytics and machine learning where we can make out a lot of inferences from tons of patients‟ data already available. This …

Trash Talk: Interpreting Morality And Disorder In Negev/Naqab Landscapes, Emily Mckee Oct 2015

Trash Talk: Interpreting Morality And Disorder In Negev/Naqab Landscapes, Emily Mckee

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In contexts of land conflict and deep social divisions, evaluations of dirty and disordered landscapes carry social and political weight. This article employs a “political dwelling” perspective in southern Israel to examine how links between Bedouin character, litter and disorder, and lawlessness have become widespread, even naturalized, among many government officials and Jewish residents and even some Bedouin Arab residents. Contemporary trash talk draws on, but simultaneously masks, a history of state-building projects that employed Orientalist evaluations of order and disorder and segregationist approaches to development. While this masking of social construction is a property of all symbolically powerful social …

The Environment And Civil War: Exploring The Relationship Between The Environmental Performance Index And Incidence Of Internal Armed Conflict, Katerina N. Krohn Oct 2015

The Environment And Civil War: Exploring The Relationship Between The Environmental Performance Index And Incidence Of Internal Armed Conflict, Katerina N. Krohn

Student Publications

The state of the environment is receiving increasing attention. Environmental quality’s possible relationship to violent conflict attracts both popular and academic interest. Prior research has found support for the idea that environmental scarcity is related to higher occurrences of civil war. There have been few comprehensive quantitative studies regarding this relationship. This study tests a more general argument that higher environmental quality can lead to fewer occurrences of internal armed conflict. The study utilizes an environmental performance index found in the Quality of Government Standard Dataset to test its hypothesis. The study finds that the higher the environmental performance index …

Two Steps Forward And One Step Back: An Assessment Of How Uneven Economic Development Affects The Number Of Civil Wars, Cassandra M. Scheiber Oct 2015

Two Steps Forward And One Step Back: An Assessment Of How Uneven Economic Development Affects The Number Of Civil Wars, Cassandra M. Scheiber

Student Publications

The effects of economic development are enormously important in understanding the causes of civil war and the requirements for successful post-conflict reconstruction. In recent decades we have seen an increase in the number of civil wars because of a phenomenon known as the conflict trap. I question why we see an increase in civil wars and what role unstable economic development plays in contributing to the conflict trap. This paper offers evidence to support the hypothesis that uneven economic development increases the risk of multiple civil wars occurring in a short amount of time. Based on the results of testing …

Education: A More Powerful Weapon Than War?, Maja K. Thomas

Student Publications

In this paper, I analyze the impact of education on civil war onset, utilizing variables measuring length of compulsory education and number of internal armed conflicts in a given country per year. Using data from the Quality of Government Institute’s Quality of Government Standard Time Series data set, I test this hypothesis and find that an increase in compulsory education length decreases the expected number of internal armed conflicts. The results suggest further importance of education as a great equalizer among individuals as well as nations.

Czech Bluegrass In Play, Lee Bidgood Oct 2015

Czech Bluegrass In Play, Lee Bidgood

ETSU Faculty Works

Drawing from scholarship on play, ritual, and performance, I propose that Czech bluegrass thrives – as does my fieldwork – in a state of in-betweenness, in a territory that is between work, play, here and there, self and other. Being comfortable with this kind of in-between state is important for fieldwork, and for music-making – play, I find, is both a central activity and metaphor in both. The bluegrass play I discuss in this essay can become a response to the encroachment of Americanization in economic and cultural globalization, but also a way of being “Americanist” – and entirely Czech.

Soziale Kompetenz: A Comparative Examination Of The Social-Cognitive Processes That Underlie Legal Definitions Of Mental Competency In The United States, Germany, And Japan, Joseph Alan Wszalek Oct 2015

Soziale Kompetenz: A Comparative Examination Of The Social-Cognitive Processes That Underlie Legal Definitions Of Mental Competency In The United States, Germany, And Japan, Joseph Alan Wszalek

Fordham International Law Journal

Part I of this Article will examine plain-text selections of legal language concerning mental competency from the constitutions, codes, or relevant decisions by the highest national courts, of three countries: the United States, Germany, and Japan. As three of the biggest economic powers on the planet, these countries merit consideration not just for their contrasting cultural and legal frameworks but also for their relative influence within the international arena during the latter half of the twentieth century. Part I’s examination will focus on constitutional and code language for two important reasons: (1) these sources of law form the basis of …

A Program Evaluation Of A Literacy Intervention For Reluctant Middle School Readers, James Allison Oct 2015

A Program Evaluation Of A Literacy Intervention For Reluctant Middle School Readers, James Allison

Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine if the literacy intervention program for reluctant readers in one middle school was effective as measured by an increase in student reading scores measured by the Student Reading Inventory Assessment. I investigated perceptions of 100 students and 28 teachers regarding the literacy intervention program through the use of district-administered surveys. I also interviewed eight teachers regarding their delivery of the literacy interventions in the classroom setting. The literacy intervention program targeted the population of students identified as reluctant readers who were not already receiving any reading intervention, but were reading below …
