Spelling Instruction In The Primary Grades: Teachers’ Beliefs, Practices, And Concerns, Antoinette Doyle, Jing Zhang, Chris Mattatall Oct 2015

Spelling Instruction In The Primary Grades: Teachers’ Beliefs, Practices, And Concerns, Antoinette Doyle, Jing Zhang, Chris Mattatall

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined Canadian teachers’ beliefs, practices and concerns about spelling instruction in the primary grades. Data from surveys (n = 56) indicated that most teachers believe that spelling is important and plan for spelling instruction. For most teachers, the spelling words and activities used, and the instructional resources they chose, reflected an attempt to incorporate both holistic and traditional approaches to instruction. Teachers reported that substantial numbers of children experience difficulty with spelling. They suggested that greater emphasis be placed on defining spelling outcomes in the curriculum, as well as on teacher education and resources for teaching spelling to …

From Isolation To Collaboration: An Autoethnographic Account, Andrew Sutherland Oct 2015

From Isolation To Collaboration: An Autoethnographic Account, Andrew Sutherland

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I explore my personal experiences with collaborative music performance projects. Collaborations between different groups of musicians can be a transformative moment in the lives of students and music educators. The process of collaboration provides opportunities that cannot always be achieved when an ensemble performs alone. Many of these projects were undertaken in my role as a music educator responsible for school music ensembles but in one case, as a conductor of a community band. This idiographic auto-ethnographical study is based on my own reflective journal, which was analysed using Autoethnography and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. The themes identified …

The Self-Perceived College Persistence Factors Of Successful Latino Males, Carolina E. Gonzalez Oct 2015

The Self-Perceived College Persistence Factors Of Successful Latino Males, Carolina E. Gonzalez

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The experiences of Latino male students are oftentimes consolidated with those of other student populations from similar backgrounds. While the research on Latino males has been slowly expanding to include their varied experiences, it has been mostly characterized by a deficit-oriented narrative focusing on their challenges rather than their successes. Concentrating on the difficulties experienced by Latinos socializes administrators and researchers to focus on students from underserved backgrounds as problems, instead of resilient beings (Harper, 2015).

This qualitative study focused on the experiences of 20 successful Latino male students at a four-year public institution. Through semi-structured interviews, participants discussed how …

Resilience To Ostracism: A Qualitative Inquiry, Daniel Waldeck, Ian Tyndall, Nik Chmiel Oct 2015

Resilience To Ostracism: A Qualitative Inquiry, Daniel Waldeck, Ian Tyndall, Nik Chmiel

The Qualitative Report

Ostracism is a painful event, which may lead to prolonged psychological distress. However, little is known about the mechanisms which may help people recover from such events. This study explored how people who are not chronically ostracised describe processing and coping with ostracism. Using a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 participants (age group: 18-59; 12 female) from different occupational status groups. Thematic analyses revealed four major themes within the data: participants' immediate reaction to ostracism (“reflex”), subsequent reflections (“reflection”), efforts to manage their behaviour (“regulation”), and capacities to cope following ostracism (“adjustment”). Intensity emerged as a superordinate …

Epistemic Violence In The Process Of Othering: Real-World Applications And Moving Forward, Allie J. Bunch Oct 2015

Epistemic Violence In The Process Of Othering: Real-World Applications And Moving Forward, Allie J. Bunch

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

From the work of Pierre Bourdieu on symbolic violence came the study of epistemic violence, which is at the core of the process of othering marginalized groups. Epistemological scholars including Kristie Dotson, Miranda Fricker, Cynthia Townley, and Gayatri Spivak have done extensive work on the theory of the phenomenon; it is necessary to analyze the classifications of epistemic violence through their application in empirical settings. Addressing three case studies of “othering” highlights the importance of greater integration of marginalized groups into the education system as the necessary first step towards eliminating othering by targeting epistemic violence at a base level.

Exploración De Las Narrativas BilingüEs Orales Y Escritas En Español E Inglés, Maria Luisa Spicer-Ecalante Oct 2015

Exploración De Las Narrativas BilingüEs Orales Y Escritas En Español E Inglés, Maria Luisa Spicer-Ecalante

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Discourse Analysis Of Dr. Mahathir’S Business Speech, Aliakbar Imani, Hadina Habil Oct 2015

Discourse Analysis Of Dr. Mahathir’S Business Speech, Aliakbar Imani, Hadina Habil

Global Advances in Business Communication

Discourse analysis is one of the methods of identifying ideologies reflected in text as well as the communication strategies used to convey those ideologies effectively to the addressed audience. Political business speeches defined as ‘a relatively autonomous discourse produced orally by a politician in front of an audience with the main purpose of persuading the audience into accepting a business proposition’ can be a good source to understand (a) the dominant business ideologies in a country, and (b) the reasons of success or failure of a political leader in conveying his/her business ideologies and/or justifying his/her business proposition. Hence, this …

Yappari, As I Thought: Listener Talk In Japanese Communication, Haru Yamada Oct 2015

Yappari, As I Thought: Listener Talk In Japanese Communication, Haru Yamada

Global Advances in Business Communication

Listener Talk, typical of Japanese communication, places the listener at the center of interaction. Listener Talk differs from many western styles of communication where the onus of the explicit form of communication Victor (1992) calls the Direct Plan is on the speaker. Listener Talk finds its roots in the others-centered focus of Buddhist and Taoist traditions and the values the communicators place on silence and implicit talk.

Drawing on data from both intracultural and cross-cultural bank meetings, I bring to fore a strategy I examined in my book, Different Games, Different Rules (1997), and two additional strategies for Listener Talk …

Development Of A Scale To Assess Communication Effectiveness Of Managers Working In Multicultural Environments, Shoma Mukherji Dr., Dr. Neera Jain Oct 2015

Development Of A Scale To Assess Communication Effectiveness Of Managers Working In Multicultural Environments, Shoma Mukherji Dr., Dr. Neera Jain

Global Advances in Business Communication

Multicultural workplaces are the norm in the globalized business environment of the 21st century. With employees from diverse cultural backgrounds, global managers need to be sensitive to cultural differences and interact appropriately, avoiding miscommunication and misunderstanding and ensure business success. Communication effectiveness in interpersonal and intergroup encounters is influenced largely by a person’s ability to manage anxiety and uncertainty rising from a fear of the unknown. Though past research has addressed various aspects of intercultural communication, no single instrument addresses every aspect of intercultural complexities. This paper reports on the development and validation of a scale for measuring communication …

The Impact Of Dose On Naming Accuracy With Persons With Aphasia, Catherine A. Off, Kristie A. Spencer, Margaret Rogers Oct 2015

The Impact Of Dose On Naming Accuracy With Persons With Aphasia, Catherine A. Off, Kristie A. Spencer, Margaret Rogers

Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Although aphasia rehabilitation has been shown to be efficacious, many questions remain regarding how best to deliver treatment to maximise functional gains for persons with aphasia. Treatment-delivery variables, such as intensity and dosage, are likely to influence both behavioural and structural changes during anomia treatment. While numerous protocols have concluded that treatment intensity positively impacts functional outcomes, few studies to date have examined the role that dose plays in patient outcomes for anomia treatment. Aims: This study sought to investigate how manipulating dose of repeated confrontation naming within sessions influences naming in persons with aphasia. Repeated practice of confrontation …

The Role Of Self-Awareness In Developing Global Competence: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stacy D. Shipman Oct 2015

The Role Of Self-Awareness In Developing Global Competence: A Qualitative Multi-Case Study, Stacy D. Shipman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The current era of globalization and unprecedented global migration is creating the need for schools to educate students for global competence (GC). Multiple researchers (Boix Mansilla & Jackson, 2011; Hunter, 2004; Hunter et al., 2006; Morales & Ogden, 2013) suggest that self-awareness is the core dimension of GC, but about which very little is known. This paper considers the demonstrations of self-awareness in the development of GC. Using Kim's (2008) Intercultural Personhood Theory and the specific components of personal and social communication processes, self-awareness was investigated in East African immigrants. Findings suggest that the construct of self-awareness dimensionalizes differently for …

Peninsula Medical School

Pain is a key unmet need and a major aspect of non‐motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). No specific validated scales exist to identify and grade the various types of pain in PD. We report an international, cross‐sectional, open, multicenter, one‐point‐in‐time evaluation with retest study of the first PD‐specific pain scale, the King's PD Pain Scale. Its seven domains include 14 items, each item scored by severity (0‐3) multiplied by frequency (0‐4), resulting in a subscore of 0 to 12, with a total possible score range from 0 to 168. One hundred seventy‐eight PD patients with otherwise unexplained pain (age …

Analysis Of Grounding Accidents Caused By Human Error, Özkan Uğurlu, Umut Yıldırım, Ersan Başar

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Despite modern bridge equipment, new technologies, and improved safety measures, maritime accidents still occur, and an analysis of their causes is essential in preventing future accidents. Ship groundings are one of the more frequent types of accidents encountered, and this study examines the maritime accident reports issued for grounded ships between 1993 and 2011. These were sourced using the International Maritime Organization's Global Integrated Shipping Information System and the reports published by the countries and relevant institutions that investigated the accidents. The grounding accidents are analysed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the objective of this study is to act …

School Leadership Along The Trajectory From Monolingual To Multilingual, Laura Ascenzi-Moreno, Sarah Hesson, Kate Menken

Publications and Research

This article explores the critical role of school leaders in language policy change, and specifically in shifting their language education policies and practices from monolingual to multilingual. We examine the process of language policy change in three schools that were involved in a project aimed at increasing the knowledge base of school leaders about bilingualism and language learning, and which required that participating schools use bilingualism as a resource in instruction and cultivate a school-wide ecology of multilingualism. The project encouraged translanguaging pedagogical strategies that engage the entire linguistic repertoire of emergent bilinguals flexibly. Our findings demonstrate that the school …

"Shouting 'Fire' In A Theater": The Life And Times Of Constitutional Law's Most Enduring Analogy, Carlton F.W. Larson Oct 2015

"Shouting 'Fire' In A Theater": The Life And Times Of Constitutional Law's Most Enduring Analogy, Carlton F.W. Larson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In 1919, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes introduced the specter of a man falsely shouting “fire” in a theater into First Amendment law. Nearly one hundred years later, this remains the most enduring analogy in constitutional law. It has been relied on in hundreds of constitutional cases, and it has permeated popular discourse on the scope of individual rights.

This Article examines both the origins and the later life of Holmes’s theater analogy. Part I is a detective story, seeking to solve the mystery of how Holmes came up with this particular example. This story takes us to the forgotten world …

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This capstone analyzes 25 texts written by female university students in Saudi Arabia using the paradigm of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and genre-based writing focusing on the textual metafunction. The research methodology used was a description of the patterns that emerged in the students’ writing related to features of coherence and cohesion with basic frequency tables to support the qualitative data. The findings illustrate that while the texts showed some clear elements of coherence and cohesion and a partial understanding of the genre used in instruction, similar to international and regional studies, features of academic writing related to the textual …

Hearkening To The Other: A Certeauvian Reading Of The Ainulindale, Cami Agan

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Applying literary theory to authors whose works interest us is “a kind of play that attunes us to the interior movements, voices, and processes” of their work. Analyzes the Ainulindalë using the literary-historical theoretical framework of Michel de Certeau as a way of understanding how the inhabitants of Arda, not just the readers outside the world, comprehend how they are situated in their history, and what this says about Tolkien’s understanding of history.

"All The Lovely Ladies" And "Celestarium", Danika Paige Myers Oct 2015

"All The Lovely Ladies" And "Celestarium", Danika Paige Myers

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

These poems are part of a larger manuscript that explores the poet's lifelong engagement with knitting and sewing—and with the usually woman-centered communities that form around these crafts. The poems also respond to the cultural treatment of craft knowledge as frivolous or simple, highlighting the highly technical nature of such work and the mathematical, structural, and geometric knowledge required to successfully execute textile crafts. Densely referential, these poems invite the reader to play within their sounds and associations, making her own leaps and connections as she reads.
