Teaching Abroad: Culture Impact On Nests' Teaching, Hui-Chun Kung
Teaching Abroad: Culture Impact On Nests' Teaching, Hui-Chun Kung
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was built on Neilsen's (2009) investigation of how cultural factors influenced native English speaking teachers' (NESTs) teaching strategies as these decisions are influenced by cultural viewpoints, perception of the role of Education, teaching materials decisions and selection, and how NESTs perceive the main motives of students' for acquiring English. The research utilized semi-structured, in-depth and open-ended interviews to elicit qualitative data. Ten NESTs participants were purposefully selected and interviewed. They shared their teaching overseas experiences, contributing important insights to this study. The findings of the study highlighted that NESTs experienced cultural differences between host countries and their home …

The Relationship Between Episodes Of Dissociative Amnesia, Symptomology Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, And Childhood Sexual Abuse, Jennifer E. Perkins
Dissertations
Problem. Identifying the possibility of a significant relationship between childhood sexual abuse, symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and episodes of dissociative amnesia is both relevant and useful in the therapeutic setting. Identifying indicative factors for a history of childhood sexual abuse and including them in a standardized therapeutic assessment will assist therapists in planning future treatment. This study used secondary data to examine the relationship between childhood sexual abuse, symptomology of PTSD, episodes of dissociative amnesia, and selected demographic characteristics.
Method. This quantitative study used a therapist-completed data collection tool which compiled brief client demographics, episodes of dissociative amnesia, …
Curriculum Design And Language Learning: An Analysis Of English Textbooks In Brazil, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues
Curriculum Design And Language Learning: An Analysis Of English Textbooks In Brazil, Ellen Nogueira Rodrigues
Dissertations
Problem
The textbook is the most important resource for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms in Brazil, defining the course to be followed and the teaching and learning processes for language learning. Therefore, it is necessary to understand through an educational perspective the curriculum design employed in the textbook, and the language learning processes used based on the communicative approach, the current favorable approach to English teaching in Brazil. Textbooks writers typically indicate their alignment to the communicative framework. So the problem that exists is the lack of studies on the approaches and processes used in the construction of …
Originalism As A Theory Of Legal Change, Stephen E. Sachs
Originalism As A Theory Of Legal Change, Stephen E. Sachs
Faculty Scholarship
Originalism is usually defended as a theory of interpretation. This Article presents a different view. Originalism ought to be defended, if at all, not based on normative goals or abstract philosophy, but as a positive theory of American legal practice, and particularly of our rules for legal change.
One basic assumption of legal systems is that the law, whatever it is, stays the same until it's lawfully changed. Originalism begins this process with an origin, a Founding. Whatever rules we had when the Constitution was adopted, we still have today -- unless something happened that was authorized to change …
Relations Between On-Line Speech Processing Measures And Index Of Productive Syntax Scores In Preschool Children, Delaney M. Anderson
Relations Between On-Line Speech Processing Measures And Index Of Productive Syntax Scores In Preschool Children, Delaney M. Anderson
Honors Capstones
This paper explores the possible relations between Reaction Times (RT) and Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) scores in preschool children. Nineteen children participated and were categorized into two groups; low and high Mean Length of Utterance (MLU). An auditory plus visual looking-while-listening task was conducted and eye gaze was tracked. Language samples from a previous study collected as children played with their mothers and a standard toy set were used to obtain IPSyn scores. Three hypothesis were tested; children with shorter RT will have higher IPSyn scores regardless of MLU; the noun phrase subscale of IPSyn will be related to …

Searching For Proportionality In U.S. Administrative Law, Jud Mathews
Searching For Proportionality In U.S. Administrative Law, Jud Mathews
Contributions to Books
There is no such thing as “proportionality review” in American administrative law, but instead, a number of doctrines that courts deploy to evaluate agency exercises of discretion. In some respects, these frameworks for review resemble proportionality in operation, but there are also notable differences. This essay surveys the doctrines governing judicial review of administrative discretion in the United States, highlighting three distinguishing features of the American approach. First, American judicial review is characterized by a high degree of unpredictability, not only with respect to outcomes, but often with respect to what framework of review is applicable. Second, while classical proportionality …
Sentencing And Interbranch Dialogue, Eric S. Fish
Sentencing And Interbranch Dialogue, Eric S. Fish
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
American legislatures generally delegate primary control over sentencing policy to one of two actors: trial judges or a sentencing commission. In choosing between these actors, a legislature decides between two values: individualization or uniformity. If it empowers trial judges, sentences will be individually tailored to each defendant, but there will be unjust disparities because different judges have different sentencing practices. If it empowers a sentencing commission, sentences will be uniform across cases, but they will not be tailored to each defendant. This Article proposes a different architecture for American sentencing systems, one that relies on interbranch dialogue to transcend this …

Being Japanese In English: The Social And Functional Role Of English Loanwords In Japanese, Shalina Omar
Being Japanese In English: The Social And Functional Role Of English Loanwords In Japanese, Shalina Omar
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis investigates native speaker attitudes towards English loanwords in Japanese and the ways in which these loanwords are used. The imperialism and hegemony of English can often cause anger or worry for the preservation of the cultural identity of the borrowing language. However, the results from a 9-page sociolinguistic questionnaire suggest that English loanwords are overwhelmingly seen as useful and necessary and are generally associated with positive attitudes. Additionally, many native Japanese speakers feel that loanwords provide more options for expression, both functionally and as a possible pragmatic tool for performing Japaneseness. On the other hand, overuse of loanwords—especially …
Organic Angels: Innocence, Conversion, And Consumption In The Antebellum American Novel, Laura Jean Schrock
Organic Angels: Innocence, Conversion, And Consumption In The Antebellum American Novel, Laura Jean Schrock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Midcentury American novelists variously reworked the traditional conversion narrative to reflect a marked cultural shift in attitude towards human "nature," newly conceived as innocent and inclined to salvation. This liberalized aesthetic of conversion takes shape through the trope of the "organic angel," a developmental female figure whose journey from childhood innocence to saintly womanhood merges the processes of sexual maturation and Protestant conversion. Because she purifies self-interested desire by redirecting it towards spiritual ends, the organic angel provides a symbolic reconciliation of the young nation's budding imperial capitalism with its millennial expectations. While traditional emphasis on a maternal ethos at …
How Does Executive Function Skills Instruction Impact Student Executive Function Levels And Academic Achievement On Comcore State Standards Assessments?, Donna Akers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Executive function skills are vitally important to student success in school and later in life. Executive function skills can and are improved with specific skills instruction. The literature reveals a correlation between executive function and academic achievement. So, the theory proposed is that raising executive function levels will raise achievement levels. The role of executive function in student achievement in the ComCore State Standards was studied with a fourth grade class. It was conducted over a nine-week period, and used an experimental and control group. Both groups were given an executive function pretest and academic achievement (ComCore) pretest. During the …

Speaking In Wild Tongues: The Borderlands Of Eudora Welty And Alice Walker, Sara Gabler Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Borderlands/La Frontera Gloria Anzaldúa describes her experience undergoing a dental procedure as a battle between her wild tongue and the dentist. Beginning with a discussion of Anzaldúa’s concept of the wild tongue, this project asks how writers across the US South depict unruly tongues and infelicitous speech. Methodologically, this thesis inverts the comreading model in literary studies of reading Third World writers through First World theorists. Instead, beginning with Anzaldúa, I propose to reverse this process and assert a new reading methodology of reading First World writers through Third World theorists. The trope of the wild tongue will mobilize …

The Systemic Integration Of Kenyan Immigrants Into The American Culture, Yabesh Nyakang'o Maroko
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Important social transformation has occurred for many Kenyans migrating from Africa to the Twin Cities, Minnesota in the last two decades of the 1900s. This influx of immigrant singles and families migrated to the West in hope of transforming their lives. However, little is known about how these immigrants can integrate into the American culture. This project is an attempt to find strategies on how these groups can smoothly integrate and help their children retain good Kenyan traditional values. The researcher studied the Kenyan and American cultures and drew conclusions based on the findings. The project analyzed the relationship between …

Preaching As A Cultural Formation Tool, Jason P. Esposito
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem addressed by this project is a lack of awareness some pastors have of the power their preaching has to shape their church culture. In response to this problem the researcher explored the biblical foundations of preaching with a special interest in the Hebrew understanding of learning and its role as a culture creator. He reviewed literature related to homiletics and communication theory with special attention to cultural formation in organizations and churches. He conducted case studies by way of interviews to determine whether members of his church, Crossway, perceived this connection between preaching and cultural formation. He interviewed …

This thesis project explored the root causes of the ethnic conflicts in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. It examined the issues of ethnic, social, political, and historical conflict occurring at the regional level, which are vital to comprehensively understanding the nature and outcome of the local conflicts. These are embedded in geopolitics, the politics of established administrative agencies established in Gambella by different empires and governments, militarization, ethnicity, socio-economics, deprivation, inequality, marginalization, discrimination, racism, and the undemocratic institutions of the region, as well as the absence of effective mechanisms for national and sub-regional dispute resolution. The lack of implementation and …

Helping Mothers Defend Their Decision To Breastfeed, Kandis Natoli
Helping Mothers Defend Their Decision To Breastfeed, Kandis Natoli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States has established breastfeeding as an important health indicator within the Healthy People agenda. Healthy People target goals for breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity remain unmet. The US Surgeon General's Office reports that lack of knowledge and widespread misinformation about breastfeeding are barriers to meeting Healthy People goals. Breastfeeding mothers are vulnerable to messages that cast doubt on their ability to breastfeed. Very little research has examined specific approaches to help people resist negative messages about health beliefs and behaviors. The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to test an intervention designed to help mothers defend their breastfeeding …
A Personal Report On Methodological Developments In Us Law, Stephen Utz
A Personal Report On Methodological Developments In Us Law, Stephen Utz
Faculty Articles and Papers
A survey of contemporary legal research in the United States must to some extent be personal and impressionistic. No one can see the entire landscape or has the expertise to evaluate everything in it. The pitfall of myopia is heightened by the enormous variety of current methods and results, the need to mention and evaluate areas of specialty in which things are going well or poorly, and publication biases that should not influence content but inevitably do. The already huge variety of books, journals, and commercial guides to particular legal subjects has been overshadowed by an uncountable array of electronically …

Symbolic (or Literal) Neutrosophic Theory is referring to the use of abstract symbols (i.e. the letters T, I, F, or their refined indexed letters Tj, Ik, Fl) in neutrosophics.
In the first chapter we extend the dialectical triad thesis-antithesis-synthesis (dynamics of A and antiA, to get a synthesis) to the neutrosophic tetrad thesis-antithesis-neutrothesis-neutrosynthesis (dynamics of A, antiA, and neutA, in order to get a neutrosynthesis).
In the second chapter we introduce the neutrosophic system and neutrosophic dynamic system. A neutrosophic system is a quasi- or –classical system, in the sense that the neutrosophic …

In this paper a new concept is called n-valued interval neutrosophic sets is given. The basic operations are introduced on n-valued interval neutrosophic sets such as; union, intersection, addition, multiplication, scalar multiplication, scalar division, truthfavorite and false-favorite. Then, some distances between n-valued interval neutrosophic sets (NVINS) are proposed. Also, we propose an efficient approach for group multi-criteria decision making based on n-valued interval neutrosophic sets. An application of n-valued interval neutrosophic sets in medical diagnosis problem is given.
Overcoming Gender: The Impact Of The Persian Language On Iranian Women’S Confessional Literature, Farideh Dayanim Goldin
Overcoming Gender: The Impact Of The Persian Language On Iranian Women’S Confessional Literature, Farideh Dayanim Goldin
English Faculty Publications
[From the Introduction] The idea that language embodies patriarchal thought processes, severing women writers from the written language and from their own words, was first elaborated by the French feminist theorists Luce Irigaray and Hélène Cixous. Irigaray argues, for example, that language generally denies women a distinct subjectivity, with the result that the voice of women has largely been excluded from mainstream cultural discourse (Donovan). In this chapter, I juxtapose this theory to the obstacles faced by Iranian women writers of life narratives. Is it possible that Persian could have impeded Iranian women’s literary aspirations, especially in the genre of …
