Presenting Precious Knowledge: Using Film To Model Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Youth Civic Activism For Social Studies Teachers, Hillary Parkhouse
Presenting Precious Knowledge: Using Film To Model Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Youth Civic Activism For Social Studies Teachers, Hillary Parkhouse
Teaching and Learning Publications
In this paper, I examine the potential for developing preservice social studies teachers’ understanding of transformational resistance, Latin@ civil rights movements, and culturally sustaining pedagogy through a project using the film Precious Knowledge. This documentary depicts high school students in a Mexican American Studies (MAS) program using civil disobedience to protest Arizona’s ban of the program. The teachers prepared for the screening by reading and responding to scholarly articles on Latin@ school engagement and Chican@ student activism. After viewing the film and engaging in small group and whole class discussions, participants reported that they learned about current and past Chican@ …

Just Because It's Legal Doesn't Mean You Can Do It: The Legality Of Employee Eavesdropping And Illinois Workplace Recording Policies, Michael J. Gibson
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
In March 2014, in People v. Clark and People v. Melongo the Illinois Supreme Court held unconstitutional a large portion of the Illinois Eavesdropping Act (“IEA”), one of the nation’s strictest criminal eavesdropping statutes. However, on December 30, 2014, outgoing Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a new eavesdropping statute remedying what Clark and Melongo deemed unconstitutional. Prior to 2014, under the IEA, if employers caught employees recording conversations at work, the employer hardly needed a justification for employee discipline or discharge: the employee was violating the law. Thus, Clark, Melongo, and the December changes to the IEA raise questions …
Abandoning The Shadows And Seizing The Stage: A Perspective On A Feminine Discourse Of Resistance Theatre As Informed By The Work Of Susanna Centlivre, Eliza Haywood, Frances Sheridan, Hannah Cowley, And The Sistren Theatre Collective, Brianna A. Bleymaier
MA in English Theses
This thesis considers the development of a unique form of theatre - feminine resistance theatre. Through the process, this work will consider the true nature and power of theatre as an artform, the placement of the problematized female voice within society, literature, and theatre, and how the theatrical form can create a unique catalyst for the female voice to be considered and implemented. In order to fully comprehend the nature of this exploration, this thesis discusses the placement and relevancy of the foundation eighteenth century theatre provides, by examining four of the women who fought for the validity of the …
Mexican Immigrants As "Other": An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of U.S. Immigration Legislation And Political Cartoons, Olivia Teague Morgan
Mexican Immigrants As "Other": An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of U.S. Immigration Legislation And Political Cartoons, Olivia Teague Morgan
MA in English Theses
This paper uses postcolonial theory to analyze United States immigration legislation as it applies to the marginalized group of Mexican immigrants, beginning with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 and ending with Obama’s proposed immigration plan in 2014. It also couples postcolonial theory with visual rhetoric concepts to analyze political cartoons and images relating to Mexican immigration, uncovering the attitudes and messages they represent.

Living By The Code: Authority In Gerard Stembridge's The Gay Detective, Kathleen A. Heininge
Living By The Code: Authority In Gerard Stembridge's The Gay Detective, Kathleen A. Heininge
Faculty Publications - Department of English
Irish drama has few representations of police officers as anything but a trope for authority, tending to avoid any substantive character development. Likewise, it has few representations of homosexual characters, and when such representations do exist they are often caricatures. Reductive portrayals of police often arise from the complex relationship the Irish have with authority and with the legal system. But one of the few exceptions to this trend, and the only play to tackle the representation of a police officer and a homosexual at once, is Gerard Stembridge’s play The Gay Detective (1996). The play offers up the character …

Order Of Entry Into Foreign Countries By Us Multinationals Since 1965: Role Of Psychic Distance Over Time And Across Sectors, Suresh Singh
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
Observations of internationalizing manufacturing firms, in the late seventies, revealed that the order in which firms enter foreign countries is influenced by psychic distance (perceived closeness based on factors such as culture, language and development level). Since then, the world has undergone rapid globalization and services have replaced manufacturing as the dominant sector of the world economy. To ascertain whether (a) psychic distance is still relevant and (b) industry sector impacts the relationship between psychic distance and order of entry, this paper analyzed the order of entry into foreign countries by US multinationals in manufacturing and services sectors since 1965. …

Tourist-Tourist Gaze In Cruise Travel: The Case Of Chinese Travelers, Yuan Si
Tourist-Tourist Gaze In Cruise Travel: The Case Of Chinese Travelers, Yuan Si
Open Access Theses
By applying in-depth interviews with recent Chinese cruise tourists, this study investigates the slightly examined topic in tourism research—tourist-tourist gaze. This study examines tourist-tourist gaze as a form of non-verbal interaction and the focus is put on the emotional and behavioral changes of Chinese tourists in their gazing interaction process, the functions tourist-tourist gaze possesses and the impact of such interaction on tourism experience in the context of a cruise experience. The results based on analysis of interviews show that Chinese tourists have intense gaze interactions with other tourists in a cruise trip, during which tourists have a series of …

Beyond Homoiousios And Homoousios: Exploring North American Indigenous Concepts Of The Shalom Community Of God (Chapter 2 Of The Trinity Among The Nations), Randy S. Woodley
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
The fourth-century battle over the interpretation of a single developed trinitarian theology laid the groundwork for numerous binary trajectories, with some resulting in Christian imperialism. Western Christianity's early preoccupation with divine ontology, coupled with the military might of the Christian empire and the West's inability to hold the mystery of God in tension, has beleaguered Christians and other monotheists for centuries. An Indigenous understanding of the divine shalom community may offer different choices that are perhaps closer to the constructed understandings of Trinity held by early followers of the Christ. In their various perceptions, early Jewish Christians recognized and acknowledged …

Creating An Effective Model For Digital Storytelling In The Esl Writing Class, Mary Sepp, Shoba Bandi-Rao
Publications and Research
Using technology in the classroom is no longer the exception but the rule in most college classrooms. Now the question is not whether to use technology, but which technology to use. Among recent innovations is digital storytelling, a multimodal tool that can be used across disciplines. This paper reports on a pilot study designed to determine the feasibility and pedagogical value of using digital storytelling in an ESL writing course at an urban community college. The report documents a detailed plan for implementation and some of the challenges this process presents.

Integrating Hip-Hop And Cultural Relevant Lessons Into The Public School Curriculum, Sunni Ali
Integrating Hip-Hop And Cultural Relevant Lessons Into The Public School Curriculum, Sunni Ali
Educational Inquiry and Curriculum Studies Faculty Publications
The infusion of hip-hop into the school’s curriculum adds value and meaning for students and teachers (Haaken, Wallin-Ruschman, & Patange, 2012). Despite the cultural shift that altered the organic framework of hip-hop, referencing this art form from its most basic construct spurs student achievement, especially females (Henry, West, & Jackson, 2010). Most importantly, it serves as a cultural-relevant paradigm empowering students’ radical engagement with instruction. In addition, it enables teachers to construct lessons that connect students to their community along with social and political aspects influencing society. Students who immerse themselves studying hip-hop lessons have shown literacy improvement and increase …

On Free, Harmful, And Hateful Speech, Ronald Turner
On Free, Harmful, And Hateful Speech, Ronald Turner
Tennessee Law Review
Judicially recognized and relatively unobjectionable and uncontroversial exceptions to the coverage and protection of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution are grounded, in part, on affirmative answers to the question whether certain speech creates or could create actual or potential harms to, and result in negative consequences for, individuals and societal interests. This article, focusing on speech-related harm and, more specifically, the speech-related harms of hate speech, makes a descriptive claim and poses a normative question. The descriptive claim: Assessment of harm has long been a feature of the United States Supreme Court's free speech jurisprudence and decisions …

How Design Quality Improves With Increasing Computational Abilities: General Formulas And Case Study Of Aircraft Fuel Efficiency, Joe Lorkowski, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Sergei Soloviev
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
It is known that the problems of optimal design are NP-hard -- meaning that, in general, a feasible algorithm can only produce close-to-optimal designs. The more computations we perform, the better design we can produce. In this paper, we theoretically derive quantitative formulas describing how the design qualities improves with the increasing computational abilities. We then empirically confirm the resulting theoretical formula by applying it to the problem of aircraft fuel efficiency.

Introduction To Innovative Approaches To Teaching Chaucer, Alison (Ganze) Langdon, David Sprunger
Introduction To Innovative Approaches To Teaching Chaucer, Alison (Ganze) Langdon, David Sprunger
English Faculty Publications
Many a medievalist has been seduced by Chaucer. Perhaps it’s the totality of Chaucer’s enduring characters, memorable tales, elusive narrator, and fragmented whole that keeps us coming back. We are fascinated and delighted, too, by his linguistic play and the lyrical cadence of Middle English. Chaucer may have led us to graduate study in the first place and remains a treat that organizes our pedagogical lives. For some who teach in smaller programs or two-year colleges, Chaucer’s canonical status may provide the only guaranteed place for medieval texts in the curriculum and thus represents one small chance to share our …

Assessing Students’ Volition And Performance Through Integrated Metacognitive Instruction, Rey G. Tantiado, Ricardo T. Bagarinao
CNU Journal of Higher Education
Each student has a unique way of learning things. But whether or not it is influenced by a teaching strategy is something that needs to be determined. The study analyzed if teaching methods could affect students’ volition and choice of a learning strategy. Using the adaptation concept as a framework, the study designed a quasi-experiment that involved two intact classes of 36 freshmen students taught with integrated metacognitive instruction (IMI) and traditional lecture method (TLM). A prior consent was sought from these students and the university at which the study was conducted. The students were enrolled in a general biology …
Suprasegmental Features Of The Philipine English Variety As Spoken In Southern Cebu, Janice C. Gabayan
Suprasegmental Features Of The Philipine English Variety As Spoken In Southern Cebu, Janice C. Gabayan
CNU Journal of Higher Education
This study aims to heed the call of giving importance to the creative aspects of first language interference in oral English communication. It contends that languages have their own distinct features but this does not mean inferiority or superiority to another. The suprasegmental features of the Philippine English Variety as spoken in the southern towns of Cebu are identified to examine the aspects of first language interference in speaking English. An investigation on the distinct suprasegmental features of the southern Cebuano Variation was first identified and compared to the standard. Results indicated that the Southern Cebuano Variation was spoken with …

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students' Standardized English Literacy Achievement And Language Redesignation Status: A Multiple Regression Analysis, Matthew R. Weyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The initial No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation stated that by 2014 all students would reach proficiency in all subjects. However, this has not been the case as NCLB has had mixed effects for culturally and linguistically diverse students (CLDs) (Hopkins, Thompson, Linquanti, Hakuta, & August, 2013). Language redesignation policies, often termed reclassification, can be considered a significant contributor as the variation in policies and practices alone has led to significantly different achievement for CLDs across the country (Hill, Weston, & Hayes, 2014; Mahoney & MacSwan, 2005) and has created an expansive achievement gap with their non-CLD White counterparts (Reardon, …
