The Preservation Of Afro-Cuban Culture In The Writings Of Lydia Cabrera, Alex Bravo
The Preservation Of Afro-Cuban Culture In The Writings Of Lydia Cabrera, Alex Bravo
Revista Surco Sur
Lydia Cabrera wrote the stories of Cuba and its African descendant slaves, and each story became a piece of culture, a piece of religion, and a piece of history. She saved what would have been many lost traditions. Lydia Cabrera published over one hundred books in her life; she was an ethnographer, a historian, and a writer. Her writings painted the pictures that preserved the heart of Afro-Cuban culture, Santería.

Surveying Appalachia: Language Change And Perception, James Daniel Hasty, Becky Childs
Surveying Appalachia: Language Change And Perception, James Daniel Hasty, Becky Childs
ASA Annual Conference
This study investigates language change in Appalachia through preliminary results of a web-based survey of university students in southern Appalachia. The survey presents traditional phonetic, lexical, and morpho-syntactic Appalachian English features and asks respondents to report their use of these features and their observation of other speakers in their area including the discourse situation. Appalachian English is often thought of as a traditional form of speech associated with the older generation (Dial 1972, Montgomery 1979, Wolfram & Christian 1976). However, within the past two generations the social and linguistic landscape of Appalachia has greatly changed. Communities that lived mainly in …

J. Edwin Campbell: African American Poet, Educator And Activist, Michelle Haugh O'Malley, Christina Veladota, Elizabeth Smathers Shaw, Jack Wright
ASA Annual Conference
This session will introduce participants to James Edwin Campbell of Pomeroy, Ohio - a teacher, a poet, and an early advocate for the advancement of African-Americans in the late 19th century – through several of his selected literary works. Campbell’s life, though tragically short, was immensely productive and will be considered from an historical as well as an academic perspective.
Campbell was an Appalachian African-American poet who celebrated an experience that was particular to the blacks of the river towns of Pomeroy, Ohio, Gallipolis, Ohio and Point Pleasant, WV. Campbell’s work stands in unique contrast to his contemporaries’ plaintive …

"The Markets Have Decided”: Markets As (Perceived) Deity And Ethical Implications Of Delegated Responsibility, Peter Seele, Lucas Zapf
"The Markets Have Decided”: Markets As (Perceived) Deity And Ethical Implications Of Delegated Responsibility, Peter Seele, Lucas Zapf
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
The term ‘the markets’ appears as if the markets were divine authorities with their own dignity that decide, sanction and threaten like a godlike power. This extends the standard-economic definition of the market as an egalitarian transaction mechanism under the circumstances of scarcity and competition. We explore and review the historical and theoretical base of this observation. We then analyze quotations on ‘the markets’ from selected media outlets during the economic crisis in 2008. We suggest that referring to “the markets” represents a rhetorically deified, metaphysical entity implying severe moral implications, as certain agents claim to act on behalf of …
Faculty Expectations And Perceptions Of Writing At A Community College, Lynn Kraemer-Siracusa
Faculty Expectations And Perceptions Of Writing At A Community College, Lynn Kraemer-Siracusa
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this multi-method qualitative study was to determine the nature and extent of any gaps that exist between the writing skills faculty members across disciplines at a community college expect their students to utilize in intermediate-level writing intensive courses, their perceptions of the students' general ability to demonstrate those skills, and the importance of the learning outcomes of the two semesters of FYC courses. The faculty members identified a majority of the FYC learning outcomes as having some level of importance to their courses across disciplines. In addition, the directions for the writing assignments used by these faculty …

The Political Pilgrim: William Lithgow Of Lanark On God And Country, Philip Anthony Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Travel literature has been understood to comment on the expectations and impressions of the traveler as they encountered foreign spaces, customs, and people. There has been an unspoken understanding, at best, that travelers who wrote their tales used these foreign spaces to engage in debates that were meaningful to their domestic audience. However, the author has been central to much of the analysis, disconnecting travel literature from other linguistic exercises that more directly offered observations that were directly rooted in domestic culture. Author-centered analysis isolates the traveler from the wider world in which they engaged. It also ignores the other …

“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon
“Amidst The Chime Of The Razor Wire”: Narrating Poetic Justice In Guantanamo Bay, Kristina H. Reardon
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
The quest of poetic justice carries Marc Falkoff’s 2007 anthology Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak into the court of public (literary) opinion. While the Pentagon asserts that poetry poses special security risks, and related translation issues may obscure the artistry or message of some of the 17 poets’ verse, Falkoff’s volume nevertheless gives prisoners’ voices a forum in which they might be heard. At the nexus of legal and literary scholarship, poetic voice and its expression become a site of deconstructing identity. The Guantanamo poets invite readers to explore the ways that aesthetics form perceptions of their identity as …

Indicators Of Terrorism Vulnerability In Africa, Raymond J. Hill
Indicators Of Terrorism Vulnerability In Africa, Raymond J. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Terrorism in Africa has increased more than six-fold since 1997, with an increase in lethality as well. The U.S. government has spent billions of dollars to counter this increase in terrorism; however, terrorism in Africa has increased seemingly unabated. Furthermore, these methods used to counter-terrorism have been reactionary as opposed to preventative. To address the terrorism threat to a country, we must first understand which characteristics make a country vulnerable to such a threat. A confirmatory analysis bridges the inter-discipline gap between quantitative and qualitative fields through as assessment of observational findings about the causes of terrorism. An exploratory analysis …

The Ethical Responsibility Of Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenological Theory Of Literature: On The Promoting Agency Of Literary Language To The Formation Of The Individual, Wei Jia
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Merleau-Ponty had revised Husserl's phenomenology of speech and Saussure's structuralist linguistics and developed his own phenomenology of speech, gaining insight into the intersubjectivity between speech and individual. His phenomenological research also shows that literary speech as a deviant form of everyday speech can not only boost the historical formation of the individual but also inherit something profound from the history.

Contemporary Chinese Art And Western Theory: The Question Of Hospitality, Kenaan Hagi
