Is Psychiatry Only Neurology? Or Only Abnormal Psychology? Déjà Vu After 100 Years, Jose De Leon
Is Psychiatry Only Neurology? Or Only Abnormal Psychology? Déjà Vu After 100 Years, Jose De Leon
Psychiatry Faculty Publications
Forgetting history, which frequently repeats itself, is a mistake. In General Psychopathology, Jaspers criticised early 20th century psychiatrists, including those who thought psychiatry was only neurology (Wernicke) or only abnormal psychology (Freud), or who did not see the limitations of the medical model in psychiatry (Kraepelin). Jaspers proposed that some psychiatric disorders follow the medical model (Group I), while others are variations of normality (Group III), or comprise schizophrenia and severe mood disorders (Group II). In the early 21st century, the players' names have changed but the game remains the same. The US NIMH is reprising both Wernicke's brain mythology …

Michelangelo's Message, Raymond L. Forbes
Michelangelo's Message, Raymond L. Forbes
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
What keeps us from becoming what we can be? Renaissance genius Michelangelo’s ideas about crafting sculpture are a powerful metaphor for the release of our hidden performance potential. The actualizations of inherent potential can be viewed as a creative work performance that synergizes head, heart, and body. Potential is seen as being closely related to the psychological concepts of talents and multiple intelligences. For the global economy, the effective employment of talent, intelligence, and knowledge is projected to be a primary driving force for years to come. For business organizations, investment in the realization of human potential is seen to …
Back To The Future: Reflections On The Advent Of Autonomous Weapons Systems, Michael A. Newton
Back To The Future: Reflections On The Advent Of Autonomous Weapons Systems, Michael A. Newton
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This essay refocuses the debate over autonomous weapons systems to consider the potentially salutary effects of the evolving technology. Law does not exist in a vacuum and cannot evolve in the abstract. Jus in bello norms should be developed in light of the overarching humanitarian goals, particularly since such weapons are not inherently unlawful or unethical in all circumstances. This essay considers whether a preemptive ban on autonomous weapons systems is likely to be effective and enforceable. It examines the grounds potentially justifying a preemptive ban, concluding that there is little evidence that such a ban would advance humanitarian goals …

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The symposium examines the challenges Chinese companies face when navigating U.S. class actions and corporate governance rules, emphasizing the importance of understanding jurisdictional complexities, cultural differences, and legal strategies to mitigate risks. It highlights how Chinese companies must adapt to U.S. legal standards to compete globally while addressing enforcement difficulties and settlement dynamics. The analysis underscores the need for transparency, internal controls, and strategic legal counsel to manage these challenges effectively.

Language As The Foundation Of Identity Among Sherpa Youth In Nepal, Joshua H. Ginder
Language As The Foundation Of Identity Among Sherpa Youth In Nepal, Joshua H. Ginder
Student Publications
This paper explores how young Sherpas in Nepal use their language as a tool for identifying themselves as uniquely Sherpa in a mutlicultural Nepal. By analyzing the way Sherpas use their language in social settings and at a radio station, the author suggests the Sherpa language is perhaps the only truly unique quality that delineates Sherpas from other Nepalis.
The Semantics Of Repression: Understanding The Continued Brutality Towards Lgbtqa Individuals In The Russian Federation, Joseph C. Recupero
The Semantics Of Repression: Understanding The Continued Brutality Towards Lgbtqa Individuals In The Russian Federation, Joseph C. Recupero
Student Publications
This work serves to examine the linguistic style and choices used by Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin as it pertains to issues of the LGBTQA community in the country and the Anti-Propaganda Law. Using the methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis, the author compares the speeches of Vladimir Putin to those of Western leaders Barack Obama and Ban Ki-moon, drawing conclusions as to why brutality towards LGBTQA individuals in Russia has been allowed to continue relatively unopposed. The author suggests that it may be Vladimir Putin's careful choice in words and speaking styles that allows the issue to persist.

"Biophily: Five Musical Episodes for the Revolutionary Educator" is a composition meant to reflect, through music, some of the key concepts and ideas of authors like Paulo Freire, William Ayers, Neil Postman, and Charles Weingartner in their works that we covered in Social Foundations. Each piece aims to deconstruct poor teaching habits and practices, and musically express a better way to go about education.
Women's Social Rights: Untapped Economic Potential, Monae S. Evans
Women's Social Rights: Untapped Economic Potential, Monae S. Evans
Student Publications
This paper analyzes whether women’s social rights play a role in fostering higher levels of economic development. Prior development initiatives and economic policies failed to account for the productive capacities of women by discriminating against their basic rights to things such as an equitable education, equal inheritance, and marital rights. Applying the CIRI (Cingranelli-Richards Human Rights) dataset for women’s social rights, I found that improvements in these areas of human rights leads to significant increases in real GDP per capita, which highlights the need for development analysts and economists to focus their attention on countries’ most viable productive resource, women.
Let Them Learn English: Reader Response To Media Discourse About Dual Language Education, Jia Lu, Theresa Catalano
Let Them Learn English: Reader Response To Media Discourse About Dual Language Education, Jia Lu, Theresa Catalano
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Despite the multilingual reality and the effectiveness of dual language education (DLE) being adequately documented by language and literacy researchers, the US is progressing at a slower rate in embracing and implementing DLE compared with other countries. The purpose of this study is to understand why progress in this area has been so slow by examining the public discourse that frequently shapes policy decisions about DL programs. To do this, the authors analyzed reader comments of 16 online news articles that centered on DLE. Findings revealed the intersection of language, national identity, race, and power relationships, which could be categorized …

Stopping At Stoppard: Decompositional Linguistic Models And Deconstructionism In Stoppard’S The Real Inspector Hound And Arcadia, Erin Gough
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This thesis will develop connections between the decomposition of binaries in the cognitive linguistic model of prototype theory and the deconstructionism of binaries in the literary critical theory of deconstructionism, focusing on Tom Stoppard’s The Real Inspector Hound to show the operation of the theory in literature and using on Stoppard’s Arcadia as an example of an application of prototype theory as a critical lens. Prototype theory is a linguistically and psychologically-based theory of categorization which rejects the definition of categorization found in classical theory. Deconstructionism is a reaction to and a partial rejection of structuralism, and teaches that language …

The challenges of building research partnerships around community mapping are critically reviewed in reference to the politics of heritage and identity among Indigenous Maya communities in highland Guatemala. This paper discusses how the goals and interests of archaeologists meshed with those of indigenous mappers in five communities that chose to participate in the mapping program. Based on responses to a survey about the mapping project, participants report joining in order to enhance self-determination, gain cartographic literacy, and improve life opportunities. Community authority over the project and a broad base of participation (including young and old, male and female) proved essential …

Problematizing Second Language (L2) Learning Using Emerging Vr Systems, Linda Butler, Flaithri Neff
Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design
There is little doubt that there is nothing like being immersed in the country of the language you are trying to learn. Not only do students who wish to learn English as a Second Language (ESL) enjoy the experience of inter-cultural learning contexts from a sensory and affective sense, it is often the case that they gain emotional and intellectual maturity while living abroad. The reality of travelling abroad to learn English however for many International students is often a difficult transitional one especially at pre-sessional or beginner/foundation levels in terms of language acquisition, expense, feelings of isolation while in …

Making Free Online Learning Sustainable Through Reduction Of Production Costs, Rita Day, Brian Mulligan
Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design
A major reservation about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is that they are extremely expensive to develop and deliver and for most institutions this cannot be justified on a sustainable financial basis. As part of the MOOC technological revolution, costs and funding opportunities have been cited as reasons not to proceed (Gaebel, Kupriyanova, Morais, and Colucci, 2014). Whereas, the findings to date show that this may not be the case for all, educational institutions are often eager to engage technology and embed it into programmes (Hollands, and Devayani, 2014). There are many examples of excellent learning materials being created and …
Towards An Integrated Model Of The Mental Lexicon, Natawut Monaikul
Towards An Integrated Model Of The Mental Lexicon, Natawut Monaikul
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Several models have been proposed attempting to describe the mental lexicon-the abstract organization of words in the human mind. Numerous studies have shown that by representing the mental lexicon as a network, where nodes represent words and edges connect similar words using a metric based on some word feature, a small-world structure is formed. This property, pervasive in many real-world networks, implies processing efficiency and resiliency to node deletion within the system, explaining the need for such a robust network as the mental lexicon. However, each model considered a single word feature at a time, such as semantic or phonological …

Access, Gender, And Agency On Study Abroad: Four Case Studies Of Female Students In Jordan, Jordan Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study follows the experiences of four female students as they sought to gain access to native speakers and the L2, engage with the culture, and fulfill program speaking requirements (two hours of speaking the second language outside of class per weekday) in Amman, Jordan. The research explores the following questions: what challenges did female participants on BYU's intensive Arabic study abroad (SA) program face as they accessed native speakers and the L2 outside of the classroom, how were participants able to persevere through and overcome these challenges, and how were program interventions set up to help participants persevere …

The Age Of ‘Depoliticisation’ And ‘Dejuridification’ And Its ‘Logic Of Assembling’: An Essay Against The Instrumentalist Use Of Comparative Law’S Geopolitics, Luca Siliquini-Cinelli
Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review
While comparative law has become a key discipline, its instrumentalist use has turned out to be a powerful weapon: it is the ‘pen’ by which the identity of and differences in law’s geopolitics are continually written and rewritten. Given its attractive functionalist essence, comparative law is gaining increasing international credit as a way of developing newer theories of sovereignty and governance in a framework in which law is conceived of less as a set of rules and more as a symbolic vestimentum of global soft power. The present contribution critically investigates the relationship between distortive views of comparative law’s geopolitics …
Fhsd: An Improved Ip Spoof Detection Method For Web Ddos Attacks, Sn Shiaeles, M Papadaki
Fhsd: An Improved Ip Spoof Detection Method For Web Ddos Attacks, Sn Shiaeles, M Papadaki
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks represent a significant threat for companies, affecting them on a regular basis, as reported in the 2013 Information Security Breaches Survey (Technical Report. http://www.pwc.co.uk/assets/pdf/cyber-security-2013-technical-report.pdf.). The most common target is web services, the downtime of which could lead to significant monetary costs and loss of reputation. IP spoofing is often used in DDoS attacks not only to protect the identity of offending bots but also to overcome IP-based filtering controls. This paper aims to propose a new multi-layer IP Spoofing detection mechanism, called fuzzy hybrid spoofing detector (FHSD), which is based on source MAC address, …

An Insurmountable Gap: Can We Balance Incoming And Outgoing Erasmus Exchanges Among Engineering Students?, Susan O'Shaughnessy
Stream 2: Curriculum
Because of the global power of English and being situated in an English-speaking country, Irish higher education institutions do not have to try very hard to attract Erasmus students from across Europe. However, persuading Irish students, particularly students of engineering, to undertake an Erasmus exchange in another European country is a much more difficult process. This paper outlines the recent history of Erasmus exchanges of engineering students to and from the Technological University Dublin and examines the push and pulls factors that affect these exchanges. It presents the results of a small-scale research project into the factors that encourage or …

In this paper/presentation, faculty members from the Faculty of Education at UOIT share their experiences and challenges of redesigning a teacher education program, against the backdrop of provincial funding cuts and a mandatory reduction of student enrolment in all Faculties of Education, as Ontario moves from a 10-month consecutive Education program to a required 2-year BEd program. In June, 2013, the Ministry of Education, Ontario announced that effective September, 2015, universities offering teacher certification would be required to double the length of their programs, moving from two semesters to four semesters, and the length of the practicum will change to …

Capturing And Sharing Professional Practice On Mediating Live Online Tutorial Sessions: A Case Study From Hibernia College, Michael Hallissy
Capturing And Sharing Professional Practice On Mediating Live Online Tutorial Sessions: A Case Study From Hibernia College, Michael Hallissy
Stream 3: Digital Campus and Universal Design
This case-study is set within the context of a new online Masters Programme for teachers within Hibernia College, the Masters of Arts in Teaching and Learning (MATL). It explores how tutors and students interact using synchronous computer mediated conferencing (SCMC) technologies during live tutorial sessions. The study found that students and tutors did not have an agreed set of ground rules for these online events and thus there was a need for a signature pedagogy to clarify this. It was observed, using the Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC) and tutor interviews, that the level of interaction during these tutorials was …
