Interests, Identity, And The Geopolitical Causes For Military Rule In Egypt., William Lamon Jun 2015

Interests, Identity, And The Geopolitical Causes For Military Rule In Egypt., William Lamon

Theses and Dissertations

"Interests, Identity, and the Geopolitical Causes for Military Rule in Egypt." The thesis is an examination of the geopolitics of Egypt, from the Free Officers revolution in 1952, up to the present. The work analyzes the evolution of Egypt's political and economic infrastructure as subsequent military regimes simultaneously pursued state interests and managed internal discontent associated with regional identities. In the work, "identity" refers to ethnic, tribal, and religious affiliations present within populations throughout the Middle East. A population’s loyalty and identification with an alternative community complicates security dynamics in the region, as they undermine the legitimacy of governments and …

Grammatical Versus Pragmatic Awareness: The Case Of Egyptian Students In An English-Medium University, Nourhan Sorour Jun 2015

Grammatical Versus Pragmatic Awareness: The Case Of Egyptian Students In An English-Medium University, Nourhan Sorour

Theses and Dissertations

Proficiency in a second language (L2) has traditionally been linked to grammatical competence. It has been widely believed that grammaticality is the main indicator of proficiency in a second language. This limited view of L2 proficiency, however, disregards the fact that communicative competence constitutes an integral part of linguistic competence. According to Bardovi-Harlig and Hartford (1991), the development of grammatical competence in L2 usually takes place without the development of the necessary pragmatic competence. This absence of pragmatic competence is one of the major causes of communication breakdowns that may take place between proficient speakers and learners of a language. …

Tab Asta'zen Ana Ba'a: A Corpus-Based Study Of Three Discourse Markers In Egyptian Film Language, Ahmad Ismail Jun 2015

Tab Asta'zen Ana Ba'a: A Corpus-Based Study Of Three Discourse Markers In Egyptian Film Language, Ahmad Ismail

Theses and Dissertations

This is a corpus-based study focusing on the analysis of three highly frequent discourse markers (DMs) in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, namely ba'a, ṭayyeb, and ṭab. Based on a purposeful sample of seven Egyptian films, ba'a, ṭayyeb, and ṭab have been analyzed qualitatively using the corpus software WordSmith Tools. The analysis shows that these markers fulfill a multitude of functions and can operate (sometimes simultaneously) on discourse and interpersonal levels. Since DMs enhance discourse coherence and signal speakers’ attitudes, thus facilitating interaction, it is reasonable to expect that insufficient or incorrect use of DMs by learners of Arabic as a foreign …

Responding To Non-Stereotypical Material: A Case Study In Egypt, Amira Rashad Jun 2015

Responding To Non-Stereotypical Material: A Case Study In Egypt, Amira Rashad

Theses and Dissertations

Examining the effect of exposing young children to non-stereotypical material has received an increasing amount of attention. Researchers investigated how the different sources of media that young children are exposed to affect their perceptions of gender roles and gender-related characteristics. Researchers in the Arab countries have started calling for enhancing females’ representation in children’s fiction. However, little research has been conducted with the aim of investigating how young children in the Arab countries would respond to non-stereotypical material The study examines how eight-year-old Egyptian children perceive gender roles and what kind of characteristics they employ when describing males and females. …

Paradigms Of Communication In Performance And Dance Studies, Nicoleta Popa Blanariu Jun 2015

Paradigms Of Communication In Performance And Dance Studies, Nicoleta Popa Blanariu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Paradigms of Communication in Performance and Dance Studies" Nicoleta Popa Blanariu approaches from an interdisciplinary perspective the measure in which performing arts (theater, music, ballet, Indian classical dance, folk dance, etc.), as well as ritual performance constitute a corpus that may be analysed by means of theoretical and conceptual tools in communication studies and semiotics. Popa Blanariu analyses the relation between signification and communication in performing arts, between different codes and artistic expressions through which these are realized, between verbal and the other artistic "languages," and takes into consideration how "linguistic" functions manifest themselves within "languages" specific …

Radnóti, Blanchot, And The (Un)Writing Of Disaster, Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei Jun 2015

Radnóti, Blanchot, And The (Un)Writing Of Disaster, Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Radnóti, Blanchot, and the (Un)writing of Disaster" Jennifer Anna Gosetti- Ferencei applies Maurice Blanchot's notion of disaster to the Holocaust poetry of Miklós Radnóti (1909-1944). Radnóti's work contemplates a catastrophic present and brings authorial experience and the writing self to the fore. Blanchot's thought may help us to understand Radnóti's poetry, yet paradoxically so, since the poems repel Blanchot's central formulations about the passivity and sacrifice of the author and, in his reflections on Kafka, about the uncertainty of death. Gosetti-Ferencei's study shows that despite divergences Blanchot's treatment of writing and authorship illuminates these themes in Radnóti's …

Introduction To The Work Of Uygur Poet Bakhtiya, Dilfuza Rozieva, Anna Oldfield Jun 2015

Introduction To The Work Of Uygur Poet Bakhtiya, Dilfuza Rozieva, Anna Oldfield

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Introduction to the Work of Uygur Poet Bakhtiya" Dilfuza Rozieva and Anna Oldfield introduce Ilya Bakhtiya's (1932-1987) work. For writers like Bakhtiya, the task was to create a Kazakh Uygur print culture that combined their ethnic heritage with their new reality in the Soviet Union. Bakhtiya published in a variety of genres including lyric, satire, and children's literature in vernacular Uygur. Importantly, Bakhtiya's texts merge and bridge identities in both graceful and appealing ways overcoming the required Soviet context and continuing to inspire Uygurs today.

An Approach To Evaluating The Pedagogical Value Of Concordances In Arabic Foreign Language Classrooms: Perspectives From The Users, Ola Hashad Jun 2015

An Approach To Evaluating The Pedagogical Value Of Concordances In Arabic Foreign Language Classrooms: Perspectives From The Users, Ola Hashad

Theses and Dissertations

The use of electronic corpora in recent years has been widely spreading among language educators, yet they are still at their initial stages of exploring key issues relating to this approach. One way to integrate corpora in language courses is through concordances, which Baker, Hardie, and McEnery (2006) define as “a list of all the occurrences of a particular search term in a corpus, presented within the context in which they occur, usually a few words to the left and right of search term” (p.42). Despite opposing and supporting arguments on the adaptation, there is a lack of evaluative research …

Foreign Language Anxiety: Perceptions And Attitudes In The Egyptian Esl Classroom, Shaden Samir Attia Jun 2015

Foreign Language Anxiety: Perceptions And Attitudes In The Egyptian Esl Classroom, Shaden Samir Attia

Theses and Dissertations

Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) has been extensively researched and different variables have been investigated to determine the relationship that ties FLA with these variables. Foreign Language Anxiety affects both the learning and teaching environments and some teachers are unaware of this phenomenon and the effects it has on the learning environment and more specifically on the students learning English. The literature has shown a lack of information on Egyptian teachers' and students' perceptions of FLA. For this reason, the present study investigated FLA and teachers' perceptions and awareness of its presence in the classrooms. The relationship between students' sex and …

Factors Affecting Code Switching Between Arabic And English, Rana Medhat Hafez

Theses and Dissertations

Code switching in the Arab world has been discussed extensively. This study explores different factors that affect the process of code switching between English, Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, and Modern Standard Arabic among a specific cohort. It examines how speakers position themselves and reflect their identities by using different associations of different codes in formal and informal settings. Data were collected through observations, a demographic questionnaire and interviews from eight board members at the Leo Club of Alexandria, Egypt, a charity and community service club. Five general and board meetings were recorded and transcribed in order to investigate the occurrence of …

Investor Trading Behavior: Empirical Evidence From The Egyptian Stock Exchange, Heba Mohamed Khalil Jun 2015

Investor Trading Behavior: Empirical Evidence From The Egyptian Stock Exchange, Heba Mohamed Khalil

Theses and Dissertations

Using unique, intraday transactions data from Egypt, this study examines the extent to which past returns, over several intervals going back to up to six months of past returns, and the level of sophistication of the different investor types, determine the propensity of different investor groups to buy and sell. I adopted the buy ratio differences method to determine which investors adopt a momentum behavior and which investors adopt a contrarian behavior. I find that non-Arab foreign investors tend to be momentum investors, buying past winning stocks and selling past losers while domestic investors, especially individual investors, tend to exhibit …

Impact Of Stranger Violence And Intimate Partner Violence On The Grades Of American Indian/Alaska Native Undergraduate College Students, David A. Patterson-Silver Wolf, Jacob Perkins, Carol Van Zile-Tamsen Jun 2015

Impact Of Stranger Violence And Intimate Partner Violence On The Grades Of American Indian/Alaska Native Undergraduate College Students, David A. Patterson-Silver Wolf, Jacob Perkins, Carol Van Zile-Tamsen

Center for Social Development Research

Stranger and intimate partner violence are pervasive public health problems that have a range of negative effects, with exceptionally high prevalence among ethno–racial minority youth. This study assesses the prevalence of these types of violence among American Indian/Alaska (AI/AN) students and examines the impact of victimization on academic performance AI/AN and non-AI/AN student populations using self-reported college health survey data. Results found that students who identified fully or partially as AI/AN reported markedly higher rates of all types of violence/abuse than did other students, and students who had experienced violence/abuse had lower GPAs those who had not. The interaction effect …

Information, Attention, And Decision Making: From The Editors, Daan Van Knippenberg, Linus Dahlander, Martine R. Haas, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

More than five decades after the seminal works on how individuals process information and make decisions within organizations were published (Cyert & March, 1963; Simon, 1957), the thesis that individuals, groups, and organizations are bounded in their rationality and ability to attend to information continues to remain salient. Individuals and organizations display cognitive and motivational biases, both in their attention to information and in their decisions based on that information (De Dreu, Nijstad, & van Knippenberg, 2008; Ocasio, 2011; Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). The nature and volume of information, and managers’ behaviors in seeking and using information, have undergone massive …

Novel Hybrid Adaptive Controller For Manipulation In Complex Perturbation Environments, Amc Smith, C Yang, H Ma, Et Al Jun 2015

Novel Hybrid Adaptive Controller For Manipulation In Complex Perturbation Environments, Amc Smith, C Yang, H Ma, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper we present a hybrid control scheme, combining the advantages of task-space and joint-space control. The controller is based on a human-like adaptive design, which minimises both control effort and tracking error. Our novel hybrid adaptive controller has been tested in extensive simulations, in a scenario where a Baxter robot manipulator is affected by external disturbances in the form of interaction with the environment and tool-like end-effector perturbations. The results demonstrated improved performance in the hybrid controller over both of its component parts. In addition, we introduce a novel method for online adaptation of learning parameters, using the …

Information Filtering By Multiple Examples, Mingzhu Zhu May 2015

Information Filtering By Multiple Examples, Mingzhu Zhu

Dissertations

A key to successfully satisfy an information need lies in how users express it using keywords as queries. However, for many users, expressing their information needs using keywords is difficult, especially when the information need is complex. Search By Multiple Examples (SBME), a promising method for overcoming this problem, allows users to specify their information needs as a set of relevant documents rather than as a set of keywords.

Most of the studies on SBME adopt the Positive Unlabeled learning (PU learning) techniques by treating the user's provided examples (denoted as query examples) as positive set and the entire data …

Developing A Student-Centered Curriculum For High Intermediate And Advanced Writing Community College Esl Students To Promote Their Discovery Of Campus Resources, Sandra S. Fonseca Gardiner

Master's Projects and Capstones

Non-native speaker students in California community colleges face several challenges beyond the linguistic objectives they must achieve in their ESL courses. Many students come to the classroom with previous experiences of discrimination within the educational system. This is especially true of undocumented students. Income level is also often an obstacle to gaining access to an education, as is the previous educational experiences students have had in their own countries. While overcoming language barriers should be one of the main goal of ESL classes, attitudes toward non-native speakers can affect students’ learning because of perceived limitations in communication outside of the …

The Self Reconfigured, Soe Yu Nwe May 2015

The Self Reconfigured, Soe Yu Nwe

Masters Theses

In my work, I explore different ways of narrating my experience of alienation, confusion, pain, and psychological confinement as a cultural outsider. I seek to create narrative spaces that explore the spatial relationships between the fragmented and dislocated self with the surrounding environment along with a yearning for connection. I convey these experiences through the use of symbols (house, shrine, vessel, and snake) as metaphors for the self. As a third generation Chinese immigrant in Myanmar, I look back to Buddhist and Animistic practices in my native country, in addition to Chinese cultural practices, for inspiration in my work. The …

Multiple Influences: From Witnessing Language To Performing It, Viviane Jalil May 2015

Multiple Influences: From Witnessing Language To Performing It, Viviane Jalil

Masters Theses

5The relationship between language and tools has always been one of influence. Our devices—pens, keyboards, smartphones—make language visible and affect its form and structure. But this exchange goes both ways: all acts of reading and writing are mediated by our expectations of content, and the instruments used to access it.

As modes of communication evolve, so too do the ways in which we think through language, creating a dynamic of perpetual adaptation. With the growing impact of technology upon our behaviors, this dialogue is becoming imbalanced, affecting how we engage with others, how we approach our machines, and how we …

Placing Ourselves In The Story, David J. Mulder

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Developing an understanding of the Civil War is an essential part of the curriculum in American schools today. And little wonder: unlike other conflicts in American history, the whole story happens here, at home. The story of the Civil War is the story of us fighting with us, and the conflict shaped not only the immediate situation, but also successive generations of Americans right up to the present day. How can parents and teachers help children and young adolescents understand this pivotal time period in American history?"

Empathy's Significance For The Moral Status Of Nonhuman Animals, Sarah Katherine Vincent May 2015

Empathy's Significance For The Moral Status Of Nonhuman Animals, Sarah Katherine Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The familiar divide between moral agents and patients in philosophical ethics seems unable to accommodate a growing body of empirical evidence that indicates the presence of moral behavior in nonhuman animals. This dissertation develops the idea that nonhuman animals might be moral subjects without necessarily being agents. Broadly, moral subjects are beings who can act for moral reasons, while moral agents can additionally scrutinize their motivations to act. A three-way distinction between moral patients, moral subjects, and moral subjects who are also agents provides the conceptual space needed to analyize and explain the pro-social, altruistic, and other-regarding behaviors evident in …

The Transformation Of Tibetan Identity, Mang Jia May 2015

The Transformation Of Tibetan Identity, Mang Jia

Senior Theses

After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1951, Tibetan identity began to secularize, shifting from a more traditional religious to a more explicitly political identity. The few studies that focus on the secularization of Tibetan identity, even if only secondarily, claim that it is either a compulsory product imposed by the reinforcement of modernization by the Chinese authority or a voluntary product through younger generations of Tibetans’ internalization, primarily through schooling, of the Chinese colonization ideology. Either way, those scholars of Tibetan studies treat the secularization of Tibetan identity as a form of cultural assimilation or deterioration of Tibetan identity. …
