Image Processing For The Extraction Of Nutritional Information From Food Labels, Nate Matsunaga, Rick Sullivan Jun 2015

Image Processing For The Extraction Of Nutritional Information From Food Labels, Nate Matsunaga, Rick Sullivan

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Current techniques for tracking nutritional data require undesirable amounts of either time or man-power. People must choose between tediously recording and updating dietary information or depending on unreliable crowd-sourced or costly maintained databases. Our project looks to overcome these pitfalls by providing a programming interface for image analysis that will read and report the information present on a nutrition label directly. Our solution involves a C++ library that combines image pre-processing, optical character recognition, and post-processing techniques to pull the relevant information from an image of a nutrition label. We apply an understanding of a nutrition label's content and data …

Empowering All Who Teach: A Portrait Of Two Non-Native English Speaking Teachers In A Globalized 21st Century, Rosa Dene David Jun 2015

Empowering All Who Teach: A Portrait Of Two Non-Native English Speaking Teachers In A Globalized 21st Century, Rosa Dene David

Dissertations and Theses

One of most prevalent issues surrounding English education internationally is the differentiation between Native English-Speaking Teachers (NESTs) and Non-native English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs). What is sometimes termed the "Native speaker fallacy" is the notion that in order to be a proficient teacher of the English language one must either be a native speaker or possess native like fluency (Phillipson, 1992). This position is furthered by Hollidays Native Speakerism (Holliday, 2006) which suggests that within the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) there is an assumption that NESTs are better equipped to teach English language learners due to language proficiency and Western …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of The Boys And Girls Club Program On Sixth Grade African American Male Students' Achievement And Parental Perception, Elizabeth D. Woodard

Student Theses and Dissertations

Afterschool programs could play a critical role in helping students engage in the academic process. In addition, afterschool programs may be one way to supplement the achievement of urban and at risk students' academic and social achievement. The purpose of this study was to identify the parents' perceptions of the impact of the Boys and Girls Club Program on the academic and social skills of sixth grade African American males attending schools in Shelby County, Tennessee. For the purpose of this study, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis was used as an exemplar of a non-profit and non-school …

Marketing In Ethnically Diverse Markets, Candice B. Ward-Ferris Jun 2015

Marketing In Ethnically Diverse Markets, Candice B. Ward-Ferris

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

As illustrated by the 2010 U.S. Census data, the demographics of the United States have changed. If companies concentrate their marketing solely on the majority demographic, they could lose an opportunity to capitalize on the spending power of other non-majority consumers or create brand identification with other cultural or ethnic groups. As companies appeal to various demographics, they also have an obligation to avoid harm and produce a benefit – what William David Ross refers to as one’s prima facie duty (Ross, 2002). Appealing to various co-cultures or ethnic groups has been a focus for both advertisers and researchers for …

Giving A Face To Immigration And Integration Processes: The Use Of Photovoice With Italian Young Adults, Nadia Rania, Laura Migliorini, Paola Cardinali, Stefania Rebora Jun 2015

Giving A Face To Immigration And Integration Processes: The Use Of Photovoice With Italian Young Adults, Nadia Rania, Laura Migliorini, Paola Cardinali, Stefania Rebora

The Qualitative Report

This study used Photovoice to investigate the perspectives of majority youth in Italy about the immigration and integration processes. The participants were 99 Italian young adults living in two northwestern regions of Italy. Images produced by young adults and subsequent discussion focused on the benefits, challenges and possible solutions to foster intergroup integration. The proposed solutions involved intergroup contact, deepening knowledge of other cultures, and recognition of immigrants’ rights. These solutions demonstrate young adults’ openness toward immigrants and their attitude regarding intercultural integration.

Collectivistic Coping Strategies For Distress Among Polynesian Americans, G. E. Kawika Allen, Timothy B. Smith Jun 2015

Collectivistic Coping Strategies For Distress Among Polynesian Americans, G. E. Kawika Allen, Timothy B. Smith

Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown that psychological services designed to assist clients in coping with stressful or traumatic events are more effective when aligned with clients’ cultural values, practices, and worldviews. However, limited research is available regarding the preferred coping strategies of Polynesian Americans. In examining collectivistic coping styles and their association with previous distress among 94 Polynesian Americans, we found that participants were highly likely to use family support and religion/spirituality to buffer the initial and residual effects of impairment attributable to distressing events, and private emotional outlets, such as psychotherapy, very infrequently. The use of private emotional outlets was …

Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold Jun 2015

Stakes At The Edge Of Participation: Where Words And Things Are The Entirely Serious Title Of A Problem, Li Jönsson, Tau Ulv Lensskjold

Nordes Conference Series

This paper examines how the material performativity of experimental prototypes can provide us with new insights into what it means to “have a stake” when engaged in co-design. For participants like birds and frail elderly people, a participatory interest cannot necessarily be articulated through language and discourse. Drawing on examples from the recent research project Urban Animals and Us (UA&Us), we suggest that experimental prototypes hold the promise of material enactments of relations that enable a re-articulation of what it means to have a stake in a socio-material event. In the specific context of this project, a stake might be …

Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz Jun 2015

Design-Politics Nexus: Material Articulations And Modes Of Acting, Mahmoud Keshavarz

Nordes Conference Series

This paper is a theoretical attempt to formulate an ontological understanding of design as a set of articulations and modes of acting that manipulate the materiality of the world in order to re-direct and re-orient the possible ways of inhabiting, accessing and shaping the world. Such an understanding puts forward a way of approaching the question of politics in, of and for design that design and politics should be understood as a twofold embedded in one environment. This then has consequences both for design and for politics. I argue that these consequences can be understood better through unfolding the political …

Towards A Post-Anthropocene Perspective On The Welfare City: Public Landscapes As Green Heritage, Ellen Braae, Signe Sophie Bøggild Jun 2015

Towards A Post-Anthropocene Perspective On The Welfare City: Public Landscapes As Green Heritage, Ellen Braae, Signe Sophie Bøggild

Nordes Conference Series

The welfare city with its humanistic, anthropocentric and progressive design ideals of the good life and egalitarianism usually signifies the post-war welfare state’s tabula rasa suburbs with evergreen public landscapes as common ground for public happiness. Inspired by the recent discourse of the anthropocene, we examine the welfare city’s materialisation in a wider perspective, as a relational assemblage of culturally significant landscapes, organised and administered by various institutions, legislations and vocabularies, to structure and stage a national vision of the good life. We coin this as ‘the green heritage’; an umbrella term bridging the gap between perspectives of the anthropocentric, …

Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie Jun 2015

Re/Framing Design Trends: A Burkean Meta-Rhetorical Approach, Anneli Bowie

Nordes Conference Series

In this PhD research project I aim to investigate the rhetorical framing of communication design trends, by employing the theory of American rhetorician, Kenneth Burke. Although Burke is relatively unknown in design research circles, this study argues that he may provide valuable new perspectives on the rhetorical nature of design products, processes and discourses. Visual rhetoric is considered an important yet underdeveloped area of design inquiry, and an application of Burke’s rhetorical theories may prove valuable in addressing this need. Furthermore, I intend to show how Burke’s dialectical approach, as seen in his interrogations of historical transitions, may prove particularly …

Designing For Social Integration: An Ecological Approach To Language Learning, Young-Ae Hahn, Tania Jimena Rodriguez-Kaarto Jun 2015

Designing For Social Integration: An Ecological Approach To Language Learning, Young-Ae Hahn, Tania Jimena Rodriguez-Kaarto

Nordes Conference Series

Cultural knowledge and professional language are key for mid-level second language (L2) learners’ progress and job competency, but in Finland, their needs are not fully met. This paper draws from cognitive and ecological theories for a new approach to L2 learning: activity-based curricula with personalized, multi-sensory materials and dialogical, collaborative tasks. A system with four learning modules (observation, writing, interaction, and speech) that holistically tackles different areas of language competency, while absorbing cultural knowledge, is suggested. The modules, combined with an online space for students, teachers, and participating Finnish citizens to collect and share multi-modal materials, will assist lessons customized …

Consciousness-Raising, Error Correction And Proofreading., Josephine O'Brien Jun 2015

Consciousness-Raising, Error Correction And Proofreading., Josephine O'Brien

All Works

The paper discusses the impact of developing a consciousness-raising approach in error correction at the sentence level to improve students' proofreading ability. Learners of English in a foreign language environment often rely on translation as a composing tool and while this may act as a scaffold and provide some support, it frequently leads to predictable and persistent errors. Such fossilization can cause inaccuracies that detract from student composition and that require instruction and repeated practice in order to eradicate the errors. The current paper reports on an experiment in consciousness-raising about specific categories of errors with a group of 30 …

Identity And Investment In The Community Esl Classroom, Jennifer Marie Sacklin Jun 2015

Identity And Investment In The Community Esl Classroom, Jennifer Marie Sacklin

Dissertations and Theses

After Norton Peirce's (1995, Norton, 2000) groundbreaking work in conceptualizing identity as "multiple, changing, and contradictory," many researchers have explored language learners' identities. However, few studies of identity have been conducted within the "overlooked and understudied" (Mathews-Aydinli, 2008) context of adult community ESL (English as a Second Language), and even fewer studies have focused on LESLLA (low-educated second language and literacy acquisition) learners in mainstream community ESL programs.

This thesis, based on a case study of an adult LESLLA learner in a community ESL class, analyzes how this student's identity, the social context of her life, and the classroom space …

The Cognitive Development Of Expertise In An Esl Teacher: A Case Study, Lyndsey Roos Jun 2015

The Cognitive Development Of Expertise In An Esl Teacher: A Case Study, Lyndsey Roos

Dissertations and Theses

This case study investigated how an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher's cognition has both changed and stayed constant over a period of eight years and the factors to which the teacher attributes changes or lack of changes. The study followed the teacher over the course of a 10-week period and compared videos of the participant's teaching from eight years ago to her current teaching. Interviews, observations, and stimulated recall were used to investigate development over the eight year span. It was found that the teacher did indicate several areas in which she demonstrated change: Teaching with fluidity, automaticity, …

Training And Application Of Correct Information Unit Analysis To Structured And Unstructured Discourse, Audrey Bretthauer Cohen Jun 2015

Training And Application Of Correct Information Unit Analysis To Structured And Unstructured Discourse, Audrey Bretthauer Cohen

Dissertations and Theses

Correct Information Units (CIU) analysis is one of the few measures of discourse that attempts to quantify discourse as a function of communicating information efficiently. Though this analysis is used reliably as a research tool, most studies' apply CIUs to structured discourse tasks and do not specifically describe how raters are trained. If certified clinical speech-language pathologists can likewise reliably apply CIU analysis within clinical settings to unstructured discourse, such as the discourse of people with aphasia (PWA), it may allow clinicians to quantify the information communicated efficiently in clinical populations with discourse deficits. Purpose: The purpose of this study …

The Art Of French Melodie: A Manual For Recital Preparation, Kristen Abraham Jun 2015

The Art Of French Melodie: A Manual For Recital Preparation, Kristen Abraham

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

I document my journey through the research, development and execution of a recital, resulting in guidelines for how one would achieve a future recital. This recital is focused on French mélodie, a genre of art song classified by its intense lyricism and precision. Moving through three phases: thinking, doing and reflecting, I highlight the important processes required to transition seamlessly through each. While going through the project, each step is documented in a journal to maintain the integrity of the process. My end goal is to present a “How To” manual with information on planning, preparing and ultimately presenting a …

Climate Change Discourse And Gendered Communication, Meagan Newsom Pierluissi Jun 2015

Climate Change Discourse And Gendered Communication, Meagan Newsom Pierluissi

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Climate change is one of the most critical threats facing the 21st century. The effects on the planet, humankind, jobs, food supply, and other vital resources increase every year. Those communicating these details to the American public through mass media are doing so with gendered discourse. This study analyzes three speeches from predominant climate change communicators representing three different platforms: politician Al Gore, cultural figure Leonardo DiCaprio, and climate scientist James Hansen. Using discourse analysis informed by feminist standpoint theory, this study suggests that frames, words, phrases, and communication styles embedded in discussions of climate change continue to use gendered …
